The fact that with just a few closing words Johnny topped two famous comedians and Campbell and got the biggest laugh is all the proof we need that Carson was a consummate, multi talented performer. "Well, she certainly knows your staying power." That is simply brilliant timing and putting everything together.
This is one of the greatest Tonight Shows ever. Who would have thought that Glen Campbell and Don Rickles would have fit together so well and Dom DeLuise was in top form.
Just finally realized: Johnny knew the Show was more about making his guests shine ! Where as today's hosts Worship At The Church Of Their Own Narscicism .
Nailed it 🎯 ! Johnny Carson one of the greatest 'straight men' ever and best show host of all time because of that... (in comedy Bud Abbott was the very best and Jack Benny, Oliver Hardy, Mo Howard & even Milton Berle (with Henny Youngman) were exceptional. Jack Benny was Carson's idle & Milton Berle was Rickles' idol .
Yes, indeed, Nomad! 🙂 I'd like to see some of today's talk show hosts view some of these clips and witness their reactions. If only to see whether or not they learned anything.
Wow! I've been catching up with all of the Don Rickles stuff and holy smokes!! that dude was a riot! I didn't really get him at first because I was too young. then i lost touch with him. Antonio, it would be worth your time to find the documentary "Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project" from 2007 and give it a view. Shows what a kind, generous and yes warm person he was. Oddly a few weeks ago I watched several hours of Don's work on here and he was one of a kind. I'm genuinely sorry to see him go.

Don Rickles is just so wonderful and supportive of everyone. Like when Dom says "we got lucky" and Don chimes in with "stop saying you're lucky...you're talented!". Such warmth.
Carson was the best. He let the segment play out, talking only when needed. Carson always knew it was about the guests, not him. Today’s fools look like children in comparison.
@@Miatacrosser Carson was a maestro because not only did he let his guests shine, like this example here, but when he DID get in a joke of his own it had that much more impact. That 'staying power' joke was so hilarious because Carson had 2+ minutes of setup beforehand that was just as funny from Dom, Don, and Glen. And they knew it too hence the standing ovation.

MSN just conducted another of their surveys on msn.com or the msn news site. Either way, 70%+ of respondents (200K+ when I saw it) picked Carson as their favorite night talk show host of all time. So who is using the msn news site? Not young people apparently; but it still says something about how beloved Carson was.
This is what a late night show should be!!! This interview alone is better than the last 5 years combined of modern late night programs. This is just amazing!!
What a funny combination of guests! I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. It was great to see Glenn jump in and have some fun with Don and Dom. And one of the funniest parts of the whole show was Johnny's last line.
Mo Money 73 was hard... but the best part that I remember is having two channels to chose from and leaving a 40 acre farm to go into the service ( flush toilets and hot showers were great!!) The best part? I was young... Your best part is right now...
I think they should bring these back in reruns. They would rank better than any of the contemporary talk shows out there. This is classic. I lot of us grew up with the original Tonight Show and it has certainly weathered the times. Johnny was the King and he surrounded himself with the great artists of the time.
Unbelievable how fast he could react with an absolutely brilliant ad lib. His reference to Eichmann sitting in a glass box being voted on by two Israelis was comedic genius.
caddidon...... No Truer words spoken, and how starved we are for Real true People all the way around these days... meaning "solid" people with integrity, real intelligence, and common sense... sadly and seemingly, a thing of our past. I find it interesting that all this generation (Rickles, Carson, John Wayne, Michael Landon.. etc, etc, etc..) that has now pretty well passed on, seems to coincide with the "passing of America" as well... the greatness of what was Once the USofA.... is No Longer, we now live in a country that has truly lost its way.... as has, most of the world in general. Very Sad, indeed.
Chuck D well Mr moron, have you ever worked on a set? Off Broadway? Okay I didn't think so because if you had an IQ before you said anything you would know that a common term among actors is actor alchemy. Don't you look stupid now.
Truly, one of the best clips of the old generation of the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. All three guests, and even dear Ed, and Johnny have all left us now. But they've left a legacy of laughter for generations to come. I didn't see this episode, but I was watching the show all of my youth. This clip brought a laugh, a smile, and a tear of joy for having known such talent. There will never be another moment like this. There will never be talent quite like this again either. Thank you for a wonderful walk down memory lane.
Johnny casually blowing smoke in his guests’ faces and no one thinks anything of it. That’s not saying we should still be doing that (although vapers these days are downright annoying).
The Johnny Carson Tonight Show was the pinnacle of TV talk shows for all time! There was nowhere for it to go but down. No one has ever, nor ever will be as good as Johnny Carson. But the best shows always featured Don Rickles!
I look at these clips, at this one, with these guys, and laugh as I always do, and for a moment I forget they're all gone now. Every one of them. And I miss them. They set the bar high, and no one since has reached it.
You can see Johnny's face after rickles says have you got a minute... he knows what he's going to say straight away... he's lining it up.... brilliant 👏
Lorraine Pec I remember when George was with the pack rates on Carson and he said “ Have you ever felt you were in a room of Tuxedos and you were the brown shoes ?” “ THAT endured him to the Rat Pack ....
These men were true artists when it comes to comedy! They have us laughing so hard, even 44 years later, and through it all, you never heard any foul language. We have too few comedians like this today, that's for sure.
Tonight Show 1973: Johnny, Don, Dom and Ed sits around smoking and busting each other's balls. Tonight Show 2017: Jimmy Fallon plays Pictionary with Kendall Jenner, Megan Fox and Sheilene Woodley.
Really most entertainment today is tepid, sanitized garbage lacking any soul to it. The perpetually aggrieved social media of today would never allow another Rickles in his prime, that's for damn sure.
Wow Comedy when it was Comedy. They don't write stuff like this anymore! Where can you find 4 greats like Glen Campbell,Don Rickles ,Dom DeLuise and Johnny Carson all in one room?? End of an Era for each of them and may they all RIP!
Now days they don't have 3 known stars on the couch and have them on stage after they do their interviews. Today it's one known guest first, the second guest gets maybe 5 or so minuets of chat then the music act gets 5 minuets and then they say goodnight. Pathetic
They were friends. Campbell may have been a little tipsy because they always had booze in the green room for the guests. But in no way was Rickles bothered by Glen Campbell giving him a ton of in's to crack jokes at Glens expense. :-I
OMG--- THIS SHOULD AND IS A CLASSIC--- great timing -- chemistry and rhythm... oh to have this still here-- what great entertainment -- and super comics we had.... thank you for this video---- first time seeing this... luv it...
Well Glen's timing wasn't so great, but that just made it funnier, God bless his soul. My mother in law is from Arkansas and they are great people, especially for her to accept a Yankee from NY like me into their family. They made me an honorary southerner.
i've never seen Glen Campbell so loose and relax and so darn frank. How many know he's helluva guitar player. Im just happy to see him have lots of fun with Rickles..the odd couple. And delouise you can tell how much he admires Rickles. Just some buddies over at Johnny's house
My god...what has happended to comedy on TV... This was the ultimate in its day.... I can recall when the tonight show was 90 minutes.... Johnny would do at least a 15 minute monologue if not longer.... Then after a break would come back with 15 minutes or so of shtick.... And if he only had 2 guests he and a good 30 minutes with each.... I got to see the famous Burt reynolds shaving cream show... And then from 1980 to 1984 saw every show.... It was nirvana.... Then Letterman came on the screen on NBC.... Brilliant... Never missed a show... When he switched to. CBS it tanked.... Not as intimate as the NBC set... Was lost for a long time till Craig Ferguson came on.... Absolutely brilliant... Nothing came close to his show.... And since he's left all that's left is a void.... These so called comedic late night hosts have no talent... And the talent they bring on have no talent.... Hollywood has become nothing but a vehicle to promote violence drugs and sex.... No class anymore...... Just vacuous empty headed animal food trough wipers... There's only been a few movies made since the 1960s that are worth watching.... And very few television shows worth watching since 1980...its all violence drugs and sex.... Comedy has vanished... Real comedy... Not this drivel with canned laughter... Most of the good comedians have passed.... RIP.... I have to end this as the tears are coming....

I've watched this clip several times. Johnny bringing it home getting a standing ovation from Don and Dom is great. Love that they appreciated the talent.
LMAO... this was out of control from the start.. I blame most of the laughter on Don.. When Dom DeLuise died Mel Brooks also made a statement to the same paper, telling them that DeLuise "created so much joy and laughter on the set that you couldn’t get your work done. So every time I made a movie with Dom, I would plan another two days on the schedule just for laughter. It's a sad day. It's hard to think of this life and this world without him.

You see some great people defenseless, frustrated, and sadly even act out radically as one would do when pushed to their limit the loudmouth school bully....there's so much more wrong wit this dude BUT I think he might be dead now, so, Thank God...

@@nickdamagio ...I am assuming you're talking about Rickles...? He is a sarcastic comedian. People say they feel left out if he doesn't 'insult' them. He is like Joan Rivers. I remember she used to make sarcastic comments about Liz Taylor then she just stopped. Someone asked her why and said she stopped the Liz Taylor jokes when Liz went into rehab to get help.
Some people hate sarcastic joking for some reason, then, don't watch it. I like it as long as it's funny and not mean. 😂

I miss those days when celebrities were cool, TV was better. And they didn't have to swear to be funny. RIP Don Rickles.
Amen.
Yet people watch them. Why????? @TSC TSC
When late night television was for entertaining and not politicizing.

The fact that with just a few closing words Johnny topped two famous comedians and Campbell and got the biggest laugh is all the proof we need that Carson was a consummate, multi talented performer. "Well, she certainly knows your staying power." That is simply brilliant timing and putting everything together.
LOL Rickles walked right into that one.
Ronald McReynolds could you explain the joke please ?
Is it because he never stayed on the air for more than a couple of episodes ?
Pussy With teeth Yeah, basically. Rickles was a successful comedian, except for his tv shows.
Yeah i just wanted to make sure ... Thanks

PRESSUREWORKS you are so right....that was Johnny's genius.
True. They all do - they're nobodies.
good point
Nailed it 🎯 ! Johnny Carson one of the greatest 'straight men' ever and best show host of all time because of that... (in comedy Bud Abbott was the very best and Jack Benny, Oliver Hardy, Mo Howard & even Milton Berle (with Henny Youngman) were exceptional. Jack Benny was Carson's idle & Milton Berle was Rickles' idol .

2020 and still best 21 minutes of talk show genuine comedy
This is the funniest Tonight Show episode of all time.

Yes, indeed, Nomad! 🙂 I'd like to see some of today's talk show hosts view some of these clips and witness their reactions. If only to see whether or not they learned anything.

The laughs that Dom and Don shared must've been a riot. What a friendship, you can see the admiration on Don's face.
Wow! I've been catching up with all of the Don Rickles stuff and holy smokes!! that dude was a riot! I didn't really get him at first because I was too young. then i lost touch with him. Now watching all these videos has opened up my eyes to the talent that he truly was. Rest in peace Don, they don't make like you anymore.....
Those were the days, Rickles will be missed.
An era has ended
I remember Burns, Dangerfield, Winters, Hope etc.
Real comedy that was really funny and clean jokes.
One of my favorites is Rickles at Reagan's Inaugaral.
Guy Fawkes , I will definitely look up that documentary. Thank you much for the info.... Man if a person needed to know meaning spontaneous i would tell them to look up Mr. warmth! AKA Rickles!! :)
You are very welcome. I envy you being able to discover Rickles anew.
Guy Fawkes ,I know what you mean. The discovery of something new, even if a little bit late is the best! thanks again....
In '73, I was in the 9th grade, stayed up to watch every Tonight Show. I remember this show.
I also was in 9th grade and was also up to watch the Tonight Show every night.
James Miles The Tonight Show produced a double lp back in 1973 and parts of this segment was to showcase Don Rickles.
Me too!! 15 years young.

I've watched alot of Don Rickles on Johnny Carson and I have to say so far this is one of my favorites. It's one of the most naturally hilarious and cute because you can tell the whole panel is enjoying themselves with each other. Sometimes it can be awkward or one person's really odd or uncomfortable but this one I love ALL the way through.
I genuinely feel like I'm right there and they're telling me the story...good stuff
Watching this in 2020. Still pure gold. Why can’t the late night scene be like this. Unbelievable
Because Leftards have taken over Hollywood, TV, and virtually all entertainment institutions. And the Left IS NOT FUNNY. They are fundamentally unhappy, bitter people, and they simply HAVE to make everything about politics.
Woke activism neuters and destroys everything...
A 20 minute clip of the Tonight Show 1973 produces more laughs than a year's worth of shows today. Man these guys were funny!!
My dad used to sit and be entertained by the legends.
My dad is gone and so as the legends.
American entertainment hasn't been the same.
I am watching this and remembering how funny entertainment was compare to todays shows.
2020 and a new world of entertainment has been lost.
yes, I remember my dad sitting on the couch and laughing so hard that’s a great memory. Thanks for thanks for bringing that up.
Don Rickles is just so wonderful and supportive of everyone. Like when Dom says "we got lucky" and Don chimes in with "stop saying you're lucky...you're talented!". Such warmth.
That's WHY he's known as, Mr. Warmth!!!!!

Frankie the dems want everybody to hate anybody whi dosen't believe in there bullshit .
I was just thinking this. The hosts after him try to keep the spotlight on themselves. I just love how Carson has a way of prompting his guests and let’s them run with it.
Well said. And it was that and that alone that made Carson a star. Sadly these greats are no longer with us.

Watching this just makes me realise that todays talkshow are just crap.
Every generation thinks they are the shit

I was crying 🤣
As a 24 year old man I wish I lived in these times
Mo Money 73 was hard... but the best part that I remember is having two channels to chose from and leaving a 40 acre farm to go into the service ( flush toilets and hot showers were great!!)
The best part? I was young...
Your best part is right now...
Thats the nice thing about you tube.i am 49 and it brings.back old memories.glad to hear you like the old shows.
Good for you, Mo. I’m 54 and grew up watching these and my grandparents reactions were priceless. This was ALL we had so they had to be good.
Morgan Freeman, Joan Rivers, Rita Moreno and Mel Brooks taught me how to read :))
I think they should bring these back in reruns. They would rank better than any of the contemporary talk shows out there. This is classic. I lot of us grew up with the original Tonight Show and it has certainly weathered the times. Johnny was the King and he surrounded himself with the great artists of the time.
Columbia Studios/Screen Gems has a syndicated channel called "Antenna TV" that currently runs these classics (among many others).
Plex TV has a Johnny Carson channel.
Rickles was an absolute genius.
Unbelievable how fast he could react with an absolutely brilliant ad lib. His reference to Eichmann sitting in a glass box being voted on by two Israelis was comedic genius.
I believe this is one of the best shows ever :))
They are having such a good time especially Glenn.
Breaking out of his shell!!!!! Lol
Thinking perhaps Glenn was on Bolivian Marching Powder.
Look at that alchemy between them, Rickles is awesome. Amazing how starved we are for real true talent these days.
caddidon......

And a FEW other CLASSIC guests!!!!!!!
I look at these clips, at this one, with these guys, and laugh as I always do, and for a moment I forget they're all gone now. Every one of them. And I miss them. They set the bar high, and no one since has reached it.
