- If you love your car like I do, but have little to no experience on fixing paint chips then you’ll want to watch this video. I show how I did it and things I messed up while doing it so hopefully you don’t make the same mistakes! Enjoy!
Thanks so much for doing this video! I got a big chip on a red truck I owned a day and the body shop wanted $1,600 to fix. I appreciate you volunteering your Corvette for this tutorial.
Thanks Man, for taking the anxiety completely out of this job for me.
Thanks for sharing your experience applying the ac-delco touch up paint kit. You most likely prevented others from doing it incorrectly. Your Corvette is awesome ! understand your desire to keep it looking great. again much appreciated !
It can be scary, but smoothing out the area with some high grit sandpaper, then using multiple layers, and finally compounding the area will result in something that looks almost perfect.
It's kind of like fixing a hole in drywall, where you might have to cut away more before you can patch it perfectly.
This video was perfect. I got a stone chip and bought the same touch up pen but wasn't exactly sure of all the details. You nailed it with this video and I feel much better about using it on my GMC Denali. Thank you!
Glad I could help! Hope it works out for you
Great job Deron! I just had the same issue on my 2012 Grand Sport as you did, except, thank God, the scratch on my hood was a little smaller and thinner. I just got the A/C Delco pen and your video helped me figure it out as well. I had to laugh, as everything that you went through in the process, I could see happening to me! 😁
Haha I’m glad I could help!
Thank you for sharing your experience with this product. It was a great job and an excellent result... You have a great car that deserves your attention. Have a nice day
That’s a really cool car and I feel your pain I just fixed my paint chip after watching your video and I never fixed one either mine turned out the same thanks for the helpful video
You did a good job and I'm sure buffing it out a little before using the clear coat would help. As you said, you're not a pro and I'm neither am I. Looks much better.
Thanks!
Your methods are good, the only thing I seen a problem with is you keep brushing. Once you apply a coat just spread the thickest part of the "drop" of paint out and then let it dry. It should mostly self level. This paint dries fast so going back over previous areas will tear the surface skin of paint because that's what dries first. Just something to keep in mind. Great video
That helped allot. Thanks for filming this. I'm gonna be giving this a try to. Beautiful Car. 🔥
Thanks for sharing your experience!
Just bought same pen for my camaro and tried and didnt do well at all and hunted and found your video and am now ready for round 2. Thanks for video
Awesome, good luck!
I feel your pain! I got a rick chip on the lower front ground effects right were it peaks on my drive home from the delearship. Also a 2019 Vette.
Nice job! One thing you can do buy some compound polisher rub into it after you apply the clear coat to smooth it out.
I was struggling to determine exactly WHERE to open the clear coat portion.....thank you!!
Haha you’re welcome!
Thank you. Great video!
Great video. Thanks! 😁👍🏽
Thank you!
Thank You for this video very helpful
Awesome job thanks for the video
Thank you. Helped alot
Actually looks better than I expected it too.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Good video liked your tips.
Thanks for doing this video it was true life example 👍
Saw a video with a rubbing compound after final paint coat and after the clear coat will get that smooth look ? I’ll let you know . Video was very helpful specially seeing I didn’t even realize a clear coat was included in the pen . Great video . Thanks again
Complete your touch up with a small 1 inch block (i suggest a small sponge kept wet and wrap sand paper around it) and 2k grit wet sand paper to level it out. Be sure to lightly sand just to level then compound it using a da buffer
A decent wetsand, compound and polish will make it like new. Nice work though. Looks great. My dark blue Silverado shows all chips and touch up paint has been a big go to
Not for nothing, but i truly enjoyed the video, usually i just go to the parts i wanna see. I also figured it your gonna try this on your baby, then I'll try it on mine,. And mines not a vette. Good video thanks for taking the time.
Thanks! I was hoping it wasn’t too long, but as you can see, it hard to cut parts out
Great vid thanks!
Thank you very helpful.
Awesome job! I needed to see this vid. I have a chip in almost precisely the same location that I'm trying to educate myself enough to have the skill and confidence to tackle it. How do you like the ceramic? Any advice for someone who's considering it?
You can use a toothpick and get small amounts from the brush gives you more control.
Nice Vid on your beautiful ride Deron,
You might have been better off doing it out of the sun, in a shady spot or in the garage with good lighting. If your alcohol prep is drying too fast, it's too hot... When you get to the clearcoat, you might consider doing that in a couple stages as well. I started to cringe a bit when you put the clear on and kept brushing it to even it out, seeing as the clear dries up very quickly. When it starts to harden you'll start to see brush strokes because the solvent in the clear on the applicator is smudging the hardening clearcoat on the surface.Otherwise, nice touch, lots of folks just blob it on and call it a day. ;;
Thanks for the advice and yeah I’d dried really quick! I’ll definitely keep that in mind next time (even though I hope there isn’t a next time) when I put the clear coat on. But she’s definitely a garage queen! Haha!
i'm holding this touchup pen that I just purchased from Chevrolet and was quaking in my boots about applying it to my Camaro. You're doing gods work man. Made total sense once I could see it, especially the lessons you learned along the way. i'm wondering if the final coat of paint (was it the third or maybe the fifth coat on your vehicle?) should instead be the clearcoat pen, to bring it to flush. I'm reticent to share that question though because frankly you nailed it.
going to head into my garage now and do it. I'll follow up with an edit/outcome.
keep the paper towel out of the touch up paint or clear coat. you can build it high with clear and polish it down with some ultra fine compound.
Thank you so much for this video. I am going to try it on my dodge caravan😀 did you do anything else to it after this video?
Don’t know what you was worried about you did a good job man 👍🏾
Thanks man! I too was wondering which direction was up with the clear-coat.
Nice C8, I ♥ them in any color but orange is clearly the best...LOL..
Haha yeah the pen is definitely not intuitive. And thanks!
Just look at the plastic container that the paint pen comes in there's a picture that shows you exactly how it goes together.
Great video brother. Thanks. I have a yellow C-7 Z0-6.
Good job bro. That sucks for sure though. Especially knowing it’s there. Valiant effort nonetheless.
Good job, for you, I am sure that little ding looks as huge as a crater on the moon, even painted.
Thanks, I have a 2019 elkhart blue that I just bought the pen for. I have a chip at the botton of my door. hopefully I can do it right. We love our vettes
Deron, I am just watching your video which says it was four years ago. My question for you is if you had to do it today Would you do anything different? just curious. by the way, I think you did a great job!
By the dent being a little deep, using a filler and car sandpaper with the color pen would have been even. Thanks for the video
Thank you.
Thank you!
Having to do same on my new Chevy Silverado :(
Good luck! Make sure you take your time! It drys super quick!
I'm having trouble with all kinds of rock chips on my 16 silverado to
Nathen Smith GM paint isn’t the greatest. Front bumper on my 16’ Silverado is chipped to hell
I used the same pen on my mosaic black 17 2ss camaro, the spots that are touched up are still noticeable bc theyre raised, i think this time im gonna try sanding it a tiny bit too to flatten it
Yeah, I mentioned in another comment that I didn’t attempt to do any sanding because 1 this was my first time doing it, and two, it was such a small spot. BUT I’m releasing a NEW video covering buffing/polishing. My baby got a scratch on the bumper, so I’m going to do a video on that and the spot I touched up. It’ll be my first time so, again, these videos are for the common man 😂
What gauge buffer thing should I use to sand it after applying paint?
I was driving and a wrench left a 3inch deep gash in my driver side door. I'm going to buy the AC Delco primer pen and the paint pent. I'm also going to buy some compound to leave a nice smooth finish. I hope it works
I don’t know how handy you are but the way mine turned out I’m confident (if I knew what I was doing) it could be wet sanded/buffed to pretty much match. Good luck!
Good video. I never could get my pen to work unfortunately.
Really? I hope you returned it!
Great video! One question is(unless I missed it)what's the white tip used for? Tried a very little spot on a chip and it's very abrasive.
It's to remove rust if you let a chip remain for too long, paint won't adhere to rust so you'll need to scratch off the rust to show bare metal. If you catch a chip within weeks of it happening you'll have no use for it really.
Thanks
I have a black pen on order to touch up a scratch on the headlight of my 94 vette. It was touched up once but still looks bad. I’m hoping to make it disappear. I have quite a bit of experience fixing scratches on airplane furniture so we’ll see if it will be helpful for automotive purposes. 🤞
For this reason I think it's worth installing a "clear bra" (i.e., clear rock chip film) as it's nearly impossible to keep the front of a vehicle rock chip free unless you don't drive it.
Thank upo
Thank You ! 6/17/2024
Thank you. A Question. Shouldn't you apply the base coat til it is a bit above the level of the surrounding paint and then take it down with very fine sandpaper or rubbing compound to smooth it out before applying the clear coat?
Short answer, yes, but with it being such a small chip, I didn’t want to risk damage to the surrounding paint. Again, I’m not a professional haha
When the clear coat came off with the rubbing alcohol. I felt that relief in my stomach. LoL.
😂😂😂
That touch-up job isn't perfect but it gets the job done. A couple hundred bucks to repaint the whole hood? The tax alone would cost a couple hundred bucks. Then after repainting the hood, you could end up getting another paint chip on it. I just got a paint pen for my 2007 Impala and it will be good enough for the 4-inch long scratch on the trunk. It will be good enough compared to what it looks like now.
👍
Did the ceramic coating make it look better?
We’ll have to wait and see! Corvette stuff is on hold for now (wedding and life stuff at the moment)
Calm down Bro. I know the feeling.... I stopped the video to say this. ha
Sorry, what liquid did you put before using the product?
I just used rubbing alcohol
Not the paper towel on paint, holy swirl marks
😂
Vin diesels little brother?
Did anyone ever tell him about that other spot?
Man i would have been so pissed about that
Best way to remove this? The clear coat globbed up way more than I wanted
The paint in my pen was coming out at a weird angle. Not from the point at all. I was having to aim high off the scratch lol
Might have some dried paint on the tip?
Can you send me a link of this paint item? Can’t find it it Amazon or Walmart
By the way I have the same color and model of corvette :)
Awesome! I love the color! I got it from an actual Chevy dealership. They color match with the vin
Neeevver use paper towel on paint
Hi, I will be attempting to use one of these touchup paint pen kits in the near future. What should I use to wipe the paint if I need to do so? Thanks!
try waxing it
do you not understand where shadow's come from ? WTF
Why in the world wouldn't you have positioned the camera so the viewer can see the paint pen doing the job? Your hand was in the way. No offence but the video was waaaaaaaaaaay to long for what your demonstrating. I just don't have that much patience. 10 minutes would have worked better. But thanks for posting still helpful.
The subsequent coats he moved the camera to the other angle so you can see. Watch again a little further in.
@@safesax2002 Thanks for letting me know. I have already used this on my car and I am satisfied. I had a chip a tiny bit larger than a quarter, and filled it in with this stuff. Its not perfect of course, being that large, you can still tell what was done when standing next to the car, but its an older car anyway and I am not looking for perfection. It still looks much better than it did. And it seems to be holding up as it has been many months ago I used it. Thanks
You could've bought it cheaper on Amazon
