Good video, but a couple of tips I can give:
    - layer the paint fill. Multiple thin coats until it sits proud of the original paint will allow you to get a perfect finish.
    - never sand in circles, only straight lines. It's easier to remove the scratches
    - never sand with your hand. Wrap your paper around something flat that is just slightly bigger than the painted area.
    - rubbing compound is basically cutting compound. What you are doing is cutting into the clear coat to level out the scratches. Drying itself isn't the issue, it's overworking the compound
    - when doing a final polish, make sure you use a polishing compound that doesn't contain any glazes or fillers. Otherwise you are only masking the scratches and haze and it'll come right back once its washed off.
I hope those few tips help.

When you polish you also add wax on top to seal it. This will prolong the life of the polish 💪

@@gangstashots3298 This is true, but it is still only masking the damage itself.
Far better to correct the damage out of the clear coat and THEN use an LSP. In my opinion.

I've watched a bunch of "touchup" videos on UA-cam "University", hahah. Many of them are unhelpful, even inimical. Some are fraudulent - the genuine definition of "mis/disinformation". But most of them have something to take away that is useful. Here is a list of useful tips that I know work:
      1. Feel the scratch. If you can't feel it with your fingernail then you are in for an easy one. Try rubbing compound first to see if you can lose it. Rub across the direction of the scratch, or along with/parallel to it. Circular motions are okay with rubbing compound. But predominating parallel and perpendicular motions are better.
      2. If that doesn't work, then tape off the scratch and wet sand lightly across the scratch, or along with/parallel to it. The tape will stop you from using circular motions which are not recommended. Circular motions produce widespread hazing and light scratching that is much harder to get out.
      3. Use the lightest wet sandpaper grit that will cut with a minimum of pressure and expenditure of time. I use 2000 grit. Double the paper by taking the two halves of the piece of sandpaper between your thumb and first two fingers so that the extended work surface forms a rounded contact patch. Hold the paper close to that curve. You can push down and the paper flexes but does not crease. This works for following the direction of the scratch between the two rows of masking tape. For light scratches that you can't feel with a fingernail this will be enough pressure to get rid of the scratch.
      4. When you see milky residue in the water, you are cutting clear coat. Wipe the area clean and check your progress. If it looks like the scratch may be gone, then remove the tape and try a bit of rubbing compound again to remove all the sanding haze. If the scratch appears to be gone, proceed to polishing compound. If you see evidence of the scratch still, replace the tape and lightly sand some more, checking your work again as soon as you see milky residue in the water. Doing the repair in short sanding and inspection steps, with rubbing compound to get rid of the hazing, you should come nowhere near cutting through your clear coat, which is TOP PRIORITY.
      5. If the scratch is deep enough to feel with your fingernail, you will sand parallel or with the direction of the scratch. Only sand until you have reduced the highest edges of the scratch. A scratch that you can feel is either almost through the clear coat or actually is into the base coat. Do not keep sanding! Check when you see the milky residue in your water. Remove the tape if you need to inspect more carefully. Reapply the masking tape close to your touchup and sand a little more. Make sure that you keep seeing milky residue. If it isn't there then you have sanded off all of your clear coat. STOP SANDING NOW! You will likely still see some of the scratch. You are NOT going to get to the bottom of this deep scratch without cutting into the base coat, the primer coat or even reaching bare metal! Ask me how I know!
      6. Leave the tape in place, or refresh it. Once you have stopped sanding, clean everything thoroughly, making sure that you have gotten all residue out of the scratch. Wiping down with isopropyl alcohol is essential to final clean up. Then carefully apply the base coat color with the tip of the applicator or correct sized brush. Avoid blobs and globs. Put enough light layers on to completely fill in the scratch and area between the tape.
      7. When the base coat - touchup color - is dry then remove the tape and apply it just further out enough to work on the raised touchup. Return to the wet sandpaper and again follow the direction of the scratch or laterally to it, do not use circular motions. Wrapping the sandpaper around a pad or squeegee will provide a stiffer edge for cutting down the touchup more quickly. But don't just sand away. Wipe off and check your progress and sand in short spells. Check with your fingertips and nails to make sure that you have made the touchup smooth with the immediately surrounding paint. You should not need to sand any further as soon as you start to see the milky cleat coat residue appear. The touchup is now down to the level of the surrounding cleat coat. Sanding is done!
      8. Remove the masking tape now. Use rubbing compound until you see the base coat color starting to get into your towel or pad. Don't overdo the rubbing compound on the touchup, in fact avoid it after the first few passes. Rubbing compound is mainly to take out any serious hazing that your wet sanding may have caused. Use a circular as well as horizontal and vertical motion with the rubbing compound. Use the lightest compound to get the job done. If you overdo this, you will wind up taking down your touchup paint too far and have to start over!
      9. Do most of your restoration of the high gloss of your clear coat with polishing compound. This will also polish the touchup that you have just done. Use the lightest compound that will work to restore the shine. Elbow grease and a light compound is better than a stiffer compound. There is little to no risk of overdoing this step.
      10. Once your shine is restored, apply your preferred protective layer of wax or ceramic.
      11. Do "10" again and again, and do it again. Wax layers fill in tiny low spots with repeated applications. This is only practical when you have a fairly new car with very few touched up spots. If you have a bunch of touchups already, of course, regular full-car waxing/ceramic renewal is how your touchups will last for the life of the paint.
      12. Any little imperfections that you might notice at this point should be ignored if they don't attract your eye from five or six feet away. You can tell if you have done it right, if you can walk past or up to the car and not have the area you just fixed attract your attention.

Best video HANDS DOWN ON THIS TOPIC! Nothing is as simple and TO THE POINT and literally perfect as this. Every other video I've been watching has some guy first doing some rain dance then karaoke then they use a knife to scratch even more paint from it and followed by a butter knife to gouge out more and then they say wait 72 hours or some more bs, then they do step 8, 9, 10... 114 and next bust out the buffer and it comes out looking obvious and this is so much better. I also see people in the comments saying the same thing cause its true, no one wants to bust out a grinder and buffer if they're someone to have bought "touch up paint". Great vid!!

I wet sanded the touch up and almost had a heart attack when I saw the large matte spot which looked way worse than the chip. I found this video and followed the instructions and it went back to its former shine. After reading some of the comments on here I though that I would have to polish the spot after every car wash but I just rigorously washed my car and the fix is still in place. This seems to be a permanent fix. I used the exact same products OP used. Thanks a lot man - I just touched up all the other chips on my BMW and waiting until tomorrow to finish the job.

    1) dab scratch with primer pen, 2 light coats. 10 minutes between coats.
    2) Wait 30 minutes.
    3) dab with base coat pen, 3 light coast, 10 minutes between coats.

    5) wet sand with 2000 grit...I am pretty good sander in general...no circles...make level...right not it isn't level and somewhat rough.
    6) dab with clear coat pen, 2 coats, 10 minutes between coats.
    7) Let dry overnight (that will be 2 days from now).
    8) Review and possibly wet sand, should be smooth and only micro-scratches remain.
    9) Use turtle wax with microfiber towel. As in this video.
    10) Use some kind of polish, as in this video.

@@MrElPoderozo1 I know you meant well, and Tara probably appreciated the compliment. But let's pretend that you are a guy that really loves to sew. You participate in forums about sewing to learn more about the thing you really love, meet people that share your enthusiasm, and to be able to improve your skills.
If you really try to think about what it feels like to be really into sewing and trying to be really good at it, and maybe you give others advice too, and you keep getting comments like "I think it's so cute when men sew" and stuff like that. After a while it might make you feel irritated to keep hearing comments that are irrelevant to what you are trying to say. These comments are demeaning because they ignore and trivialize your knowledge and participation in the forum.
And then think about what it would be like if at every sewing activity you participate in the women just think you're cute. While Tara may well be thrilled to have someone say she is beautiful in response to her comment about her car, it can start to seem like a put down rather than a compliment quite quickly. It really does trivialize a woman's interest in cars.
I love cars myself, and it really bugs me for a guy to say he joined the female car enthusiast group because it's so great to see some women who are interested in cars. I mean, I know he means well too, but why shouldn't I be interested in cars? What is so damn cute about it? 😋 You know?
So I really wasn't wanting to hurt your feelings, and I'm sorry if I did. I realize you meant well, but comments like "you're beautiful" in response to her comment about her car are demeaning, if not to her, at least to women (and men who like sewing 😏) in a general way in our society.
Sorry for the sermon, and if I hurt your feelings. Peace? ✌️

Great DIY video about touch up paint finishing. I am going to try this out now. I have 2000 & 3000 & 5000 grit sandpaper. This video gives me some great ideas. I think I’m going to try your sanding method on a fully dried touch up paint blob. After sanding to smooth, then use polishing compound, then clay the whole car, then polish, then DIY ceramic coating after all is shined and prepped. Gives me motivation! Awesome video and thanks for sharing.

This was the best 7 minutes of my life watching this, I did a horrible touch up paint job on my hood of my 2019 Honda Accord and it looked terrible, last night I tried doing this in one spot just to verify that it worked and it did, i wound up using 2000 grit sandpaper and removed all the bad spots on the hood, it took a few hours but got it done. PS it is easier to use a DA polisher than by hand if you have multiple spots like I did. Thank you for the useful information and tips. !!!!

Man, you made my day! 6 weeks ago I bought a 2019 Scat Pack Challenger. Cruising down the highway, I heard a big, BONK!, on the roof. I thought, crap! That's a chip. I was too, about 12" over the windshield in the middle of the roof. You saw it at every angle. I had a couple chips on the door jamb from letting the seat belt go and whip around, tried it there first and was very happy with the results. I used 3G grit, and waxed right after also. Only thing I'd recommend is to be very careful with the sandpaper and try to apply even pressure with circular strokes. Don't use too much pressure. In prominent spots you might see a little wave in the finished product, but overall, anything is better than a big ole' chip and you can always go over it again with the pen. Thanks a lot for this vid, it did wonders for me and now I don't get sick so my stomach about those nasty paint chips anymore.

you can wet sand it lightly, then make sure it bends to surrounding paint. Then, instead of using heavy duty compound, use something like Maquires Ultimate Compound, or another light compound. This way, it only takes off the paint in small amounts, and pressing harder can take more off too. But, it may take a few more passes, but you are safer than heavier compounds that carry a higher risk of damage. Also, once it is buffed out with compound, you can use polishing compound or just polish. Then, wax it. then buff.
Key is to use proper equipment. Wet/dry sandpaper, and use a compound pad in a drill. The compounds are meant to be used at certain RPM range. Too fast, and burn the paint, too slow, just not enough done.

Good job. Thanks I’m trying this tomorrow. I recall my uncle did this ages ago and it works well.

How did it come out?! I always painted and clear coated mine before this vid and it’s kinda bumpy and not flush. Smh. But can I just use compound & Polish and get the same results? I would rather not sand. Thanks for the help

Thanks so much! I didn't know you shouldn't let the compound dry.

Hi Alex, thank you for the video. quick question - before you started sanding with 2000 grit sandpaper, did you apply the clear coat as well or only the touch up paint ? I have a similar problem and trying to get this done myself but i have no background.
