Chipex Car Scratch Repair - Review from a first time user!

  • Today I'm trying out the Chipex paint repair system on a scratch on my car. Overall, I'm very impressed! I didn't think it would come out this well - this looks a lot better than any repair I've attempted using an OEM paint touch-up kit.
Sorry for the poor sound quality in the video, guys. I'm going to get some new gear so I can record better videos with clearer sound and less background noise. If anyone can recommend any good audio kit and recording techniques it would be much appreciated!

Well done. Building up layers of paint will help fill the scratch as the solvents evaporate. If you can't see where the scratch is from about a metre away, then you've done well.

Good video. Ive used these kits on 3 previous cars with good results. As you say - not perfect, but once repaired you kind of have to know where the damage was in order to spot it.

The edges are caused by the paint lifting around the edges of the damaged area, so it's best to give it a rub down with very fine sandpaper first. 2500 grit or something.
Don't worry about scratching it, once it's polished, it will be like new.

Hi Jack, did you try layering the paint after the first application of paint?
I bought the kit as a friend (who is no longer with us 😁) keyed the car on the way out of the passenger side, leaving a 15mm scratch down to the primer.
I was getting good results initially but I found that the blending solution was taking the paint back out of the scratch, after 4 attempts I managed to work around it by only applying one coat of paint, while the primer is now completely covered, you can still see the surface difference in the light and is painfully obvious still.
I suspect that this may have been to down to technique as I was swiping the blending solution across the scratch, not lengthways. So I wondered if you ever gave yours a second attempt as your repair seems to be slightly under the surface?
It's a real shame, the car is only 4000 miles old and was pretty much mint until this scratch appeared, I'll give it another go Sunday.
EDIT: I gave this another go as mentioned and I got much much better results using the kit with particular methods.
    1. I'd pull the hairs off the touch up sticks and just use the plastic to dab/push the paint in, you will get far better adhesion this way as the excess paint won't stick to the good paint too much. It is VITAL that you get as little touch up onto the undamaged paint as humanly possible, as this will either prove difficult to remove when leveling, or cause you to take too much touch up out of the repair, thus it will affect the end result. You can re-use the same stick again later if you wish.
    2. I wiped the blending solution lengthways along the scratch, so it always stays level to the panel, therefore it doesn't pull the paint out.
Patience is key, the sooner you use the blending solution once applied to the cloth, the faster it will level, but remember, you can wait for it to dry a little bit if you want to take it down bit by bit when finishing.
    3. I ignored using the bog standard Chipex polish and used a DA + Autoglym Rapid Renovator, the colour match is far far better.
I then used Super Resin Polish to finish, as this contains loads of filler agents, it helps disguise the touch up quite well.
Like your repair, there is an edge of paint that is still present, the MOP reduced this with each pass, but ultimately, 3000 grit is the only proper solution to this, but as I'm working with sub 25 microns of lacquer (Mazda paint is VERY thin and fragile) I don't want to run the risk of losing too much lacquer that the finish looks dull, so it's best left alone for the time being.
Either way, this was far better than ignoring the damage and losing sleep over it/going nuts and getting it filled and resprayed over a 15mm scratch, in turn may make things worse... it's by no means perfect, in offset light, you will never see it, but overhead you will only see it catch the light which only the perfectionist will spot from no more than 2m away.

How could anyone be happy with chip repair system that has a completely different shade to the colour of the car? I purchased Chipex recently and it's absolute garbage. The colour doesn't match, it changes colour when polished and always has a clear halo around the touch-up paint. I complained and got a refund and I would suggest people stay away from it.

    • @Jackster
      @Jackster  3 роки тому +1

Thanks for your comment. I was really happy with how Chipex performed on my Mini Cooper S - the colour match was just about right and the final finish was much better than what I achieved using the OEM touch up paint.
I found it to perform less well on my new BMW Z4. My Mini had solid red paint whereas the BMW paint has a little bit of metallic flake in it and I think it's harder to get that right in a touch-up paint system. I'm still happy with the results, but it's not as good.
That's interesting you mention a clear halo - I never experienced that at all when I used this on my Mini but I've found something similar a few times when using Chipex on my BMW. I wonder if it's something you only get with certain paint codes.
