Hi Suzanne. What a treasure you are. You have managed to make Double knitting look less scarey. It is something, along with stranded colourwork,I have always wanted to try, but never really have had the confidence. With you beside me I am going to give it a try. Once again Thank you so much for devoting so much of your time to helping us lesser mortals improve our techniques. Michelle UK . P.S. The new camera looks fine, great work.
You are very welcome, Laura! And good for you to pull out your needles to learn again; I have a Facebook page (same name) that's filled with supportive knitters at every level, please join us if you're interested. ❤️
I think your lighting is perfect many knitter have light background while knitting a light color yarn . Your are very much aware of that so I always enjoy watching your tutorial without straining my eyes. Incidentally the pattern now is $15, Thanks Suzanne you are an excellent teacher
The light works well -- though you've undoubtedly already heard this from others, as I'm seeing this 3.5 years after it was posted! Lucky you taking care of your granddaughter every day!
Suzanne, you are a life-saver! I just started my first double knitting + stranded knitting project (done stranded before, just not WITH double knitting), and I really thought I had to have a ball for each color on each side - I was trying to hold FOUR strands of yarn! Thank you for showing me that it's much simpler than that. Great video.
Suzanne, The lighting is great. This video is a sanity saver - I've been double knitting a pot holder - but have stumble with the changing colors. I think I understand now. Thank you. I'm joining you on Ravelry.
Hi, Suzanne! I have never done double-knitting, and now that I have watched your video, I'm ready to try! My goal for 2018 is to learn more colorwork techniques. The light is perfect, and your teaching is awesome! Thank you!
You are the best! Thank you! I taught myself to knit a year and a half ago with your help. To me, it's a never ending learning process. Now if I could just get my fiancé to understand!
You are remarkable! Thank you so very much for making this! I am so thrilled to have found it. I made double knit earflaps for a hat but I wanted to transition to single layer for the body of hat and couldn’t figure out how to do it without back color coming to front where I attached the ear flaps. Ssk thru back!!! That’s it! Thank you very very much!
I’m so very happy I found you on UA-cam!! I’m just now getting into double knitting, and you explain it beautifully, and in a way that makes sense! I love how you explain the WHY we’re doing certain stitches! And the way you show both continental and English... amazing! I’m more comfortable with continental, so it is a relief to see an excellent tutorial in this way ☺️ Thank you so very much! I have subscribed, and will learn so much from you!!
I have wanted to learn to do this for years! Being a self taught knitter I was having a hard time with reading directions to learn how. Videos are SOlo much easier to learn with !!! Thank you for sharing! I like the liight! Suzanne Cox
I've only just begun knitting and I am far from your skill level, but it is amazing to see all of the things that can be done. Thank you for sharing your talent ❤
Thank you for this video. I have never done double knitting. I found a beautiful blanket pattern but it is WAY to scary for a first project. I think I will try something like a potholder first. Your lighting is great! Very easy to see the video. 👍🏼
I'm so glad it was helpful, Leslie! Starting with a potholder sounds like a great idea, it's really just one be swatch and believe me, I swatch everything. ❤️
Thank you for this tutorial! I found the lighting to be perfect for my liking. And your explanations are very clear and easy to follow. You have made this less intimidating for me and now I will try this tomorrow at my knit circle :) Thank you so much Suzanne. :)
Oh thank you for a video. I bought twigg stitch book and having trouble with her book. I like videos. She had a seed stitch with several colors giving scarf a tweed look. I gave up her instructions, not good, plus no video and no communication back. I'm still learning you make it easy. Again thank you.
I know this video is 4 years old, but if by chance you (or anyone who can help) sees this comment, I have a question. First, though, I just want to say that I'm so happy to have found this video, and really this channel in general. Everything is explained with such detail, but is still easy to follow and understand. Other channels I've found tend to go one way or the other. It's refreshing to find videos with both. Now, onto my question. Other videos I've watched on double knitting have almost always mentioned using needles that are 1 to 2 sizes smaller than you would normally for the yarn that you are using. Is this true?
This is Jaya Sarma from India. I love knitting and your video tutorials on double knitting is very interesting..would like to knit Harry Potter scarf for my grandson in Seattle
Really like your tutorial and the fact that you did not use a stark white background like others seem to think is easier for tutorials. Personally I won’t watch videos that have stark white backgrounds!
i never found difficulty with lighting on your videos.. even when you make them in the day.. and today's video lighting is great also.. love you, and your videos even if you'd do them in the dark.. 😘😘
I fooled around with double knitting in the 90s, didn’t really make anything, would draft a pattern on graph paper and doodle knit, will have a go at it again, make some cotton potholders to start. I would hold both yarns in my left hand as I’m a continental knitter.
It prevents the yarnovers from creating eyelets at the bottom of the double knitting where the two fabrics come together. If you work it as a plain purl, you will get a hole. this is for creating double knitting from a single knit fabric.
Hello Suzanne😊 thank you so much for this very helpful video! I have knit some things in double knitting (potholder? I dont know the english word for "Topflappen"), and I can say that this is nothing what you can do during looking TV😆😆😆. It is simple if you only knit straigth forward. But when you knit a rose for example or another ornament you MUST have ONLY the 1.colour in your eyes and mind!!! That is the trick!! You only must have the focus on the FRONT COLOUR, for ex. 1.side ornament in black, and on the 2. side the 1. colour in your focus is white!!! And you have to keep care very fine😞😯😆😊. I think that is the main difficility, to concentrate on only ONE colour. But you shows another way to double the stitches and also the 4 stitches at beginning/end ~~ very fine!!!! Now I will do my very best to be successful! Thank you once more, have a good time and love and peace!! Heartly GittaLloreley🍀😇😇🍀🌷🌷
Knitting with Suzanne Bryan Hello Suzanne☺ Thank you for your kindness😚 yes, I've subscribe your channel and I've got your abo!! Its wonderful to see your knittingworks and very helpful althoughn I'm knitting for "more than 300 years"😀😀😀😁 but it is already to find some other ways to do the things! Thank you very much! And have a wonderful Pentecost! Heartly greetings from GittaLloreley🍀😇😇🍀🌷🌷🌈
You're a great teacher! But I haven't understand about my tension in double face knitting: should I tighten it or it should be loose (don't know this word) like in a stranded fair isle knitting. By the way, I think the light is good. In the daytime it would be better, but if you don't have enough time, it's ok
Great question. In double knitting, the tension should be tight, especially at the color changes. Totally opposite of stranded knitting. Thank you so much, and happy knitting.
This absolutely gorgeous. Please don't take this the wrong way (I would make the whole scarf in an instant); however there's just something magical about double-knitting I find gorgeous. I would buy just the chart/pattern of the double-knit section by itself.
Hi, once again, thank you for your magnificent tutorials. I’m getting ready to embark on my first double knitting project. I don’t know if I dreamed it, or, it is wishful thinking, or, I genuinely saw a UA-cam video showing how to double knit a hat in the round using one yarn color at a time. Meaning, each row was knit twice. First with color A, then the same row with color B. Is it possible? Have you ever tried it?
Hi, Suzanne. My ribbed V-necks never turn out as precise as I would like them to. Would you please consider doing a video on that, beginning with picking up the stitches around the neck. I've looked at other videos and they haven't helped much
'''Thanks a lot for the explanation pls add more for a complicated pattern this is easy but I have many that the explanations don't work for me jeje you are very clear
No, actually most are just completely double knit. But if you want to put a border on, this is how you would do it. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey how do i do letters that are reable in double knitting for a reversable scarf. As i wanna put the word nesuko on my scarf so its readable on both sides? Can you please help.
It takes a bit of work and twisting your brain. You have your chart already, you will also need to make a mirrored version. You need to superimpose these two charts. There will be some places where you will be working the same color on both sides (knit on front and purl on back with same color). You will need to use a different symbol for these places. So you will need a symbol for your A color yarn that will be knit on front and also purl on back and you will need a symbol for your B yarn that will be a knit on the front and a purl on the back. So instead of just having 2 symbols, one for color A (knit with A, purl with B) and one for color B (knit with B,purl with A), you will now have 4 symbols. I hope this helps. Once you get it, let me know.
@SuzanneBryan well so far my scarf is solid pink of 70 lines and black white checked squares x3 at 10 rows high. And sadly donr have a chart as if I can't do it might just do it so it's reversable. And not bother about it but thanks for the help if u could do a tutorial on doing these letters that wud be great lol.
You lost me on the parts right after and before each garter panel of 4 stitches. I’m totally confused about what you’re supposed to do with the yarn that is not used for the garter panels. You stop using it there, yes, but how exactly do you cross it with the yarn that is still in use? It doesn’t make sense. I tried to follow what you did, but it isn’t clear. You also don’t show what to do in the row following the one where the dark color is used to purl. So I’m lost. I’ve watched over and over, and it still makes no sense at all.

Thank you so much for your instructions. They are so thorough. The lighting is good. I’m 75 and can see your work easily.
Thank you for the feedback. 🧶

I've just started doing double knitting after over 50 years of knitting and this is the best video I've ever seen of how to do it.
Thank you!
This is the first time I have seen anyone knitting continental and actually make it look easy. Excellent video.

Why do you purl in the back loop rather than the front? I'm trying to tech myself double knitting and this video is super helpful.
Can you tell me at which point of the video your question is related to? Then I can answer you better. Thank you.
When you start using the green yarn.

Wonderful idea for a video. I will add this to my video todo list. Thank you!
Does double knitting work with garter stitch? I want to make a mosaic color work scarf but I also want it reverse able
Yes, you can, it would be fairly thick, with a mosaic fabric on each side. With standard mosaic knitting, you can not make it reversible.
'''Thanks a lot for the explanation pls add more for a complicated pattern this is easy but I have many that the explanations don't work for me jeje you are very clear

Something like M'Lou Baber designs tsk for your attention
I have her book, if you give me a specific design, or area, I will give it a shot to make video.
'Thanks the one in the cover of her book black and white with circles , I find very difficult to guide in the pattern
I will take a look and see what I can do.
EXCELLENT!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!
You're very welcome, Norma! ❤️
Is it possible to do each row in two passes like in brioche? I imagine tensioning one yarn at a time should be easier.
Absolutely! Great question, thanks so much for asking! ❤️
Thanks 👍
No problem 👍
Ehhhh I’m gonna try to do a blanket with fair isle double knitting after only a few months of knitting 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Very awesome! Join my group on Facebook - Knitting with Suzanne Bryan to show us your progress.
Are ALL Xdouble knitted pieces bordered by garter? This was very understandable. I love your videos. 😊
No, actually most are just completely double knit. But if you want to put a border on, this is how you would do it.
