Do a show only speaking gibberish for the whole show (crowd build up, show, money collecting). And remember to keep straight face, act like it's a real language and everyone should understand you perfectly.

I used to dabble in magic and my friend was a street performer in Covent Garden. I spent one summer there, tagging along with him and his other performer friends.. It was a great time. After one of his shows an American came over to give him some money and asked me to show him a trick. I showed him a relatively amateur card trick and he gave me 20 quid.. He told me he was a stock broker and it was fine.. so I graciously accepted.. Magic is awesome, so are some people :)

I'm a balloon twister. Your story reminded me of one crappy event I was at years ago. Small festival, on the road and "not making the nut" that weekend. And two guys came along who wanted silly hats and the whole shtick. Hung around for half an hour. Paid me...oh...80 bucks over all (bits at a time). Turned the day around for me.
Then there was the time I'm doing the "Reverse Puppy Dog Magic Show" for a guy and his date. And a drunk comes up as I'm doing the big finale. (A pom pom appearing "by magic" on the tail.) "If you can make that balloon do anything my dick can't do, I'll give you ten bucks" he slurs, loudly.
That awkward moment? Show (and tip) ruined? Nope. I count down from 3, blow (like a birthday candle) and Voila! Pom pom at the end of the long skinny tail.
"Fair enough" he said. Pays me. The guy pays for the show (a pretty good one, all in all) & the puppy for his date. And I strolled on.

So glad to see these back! They were what brought me over hear in the first place. For a challenge, might be a bit hard, but how about a whole show without talking? If you can build a crowd and hold a good show without saying a word you'll clearly have an exceptional one when you start chatting again

  • @seanthebluesheep
    @seanthebluesheep 6 років тому +6

I think it would be an interesting challenge to perform using as few words as possible.
You have phenomenal charisma, and it's one of the reasons you've managed to build a good size youtube channel, but aside from that, some of your most compelling videos are your "keep your eye on the..." videos, which are largely dialogue (monologue?) free. I'm not sure how well it would pair with building the audience and performing, and if it's simply too big of a change-up to your routine to be a fair challenge, but it would maybe help you become a better performer in some ways.
    Other challenge ideas:
Do a performance somewhere you've never been. Hard mode, in another country, extra hard mode, a country that doesn't speak English.
Do a backflip in your performance but don't mention it at all, or make any reference to it.
Do a performance with someone else.

  • @LiamODellUK

Good to see you back street performing, Steven! And to see the return of the ‘Day in the Life’ videos!
As for a street performer challenge, perhaps, in addition to building an audience without saying anything, you could try a trick with an audience member without saying something? It may help when an individual may not know that much English, or is hard of hearing like myself! It may also be interesting on the grounds of making sure that everyone is included in the act, in addition to that one person to whom you’re doing the trick.
Also, that ‘artistic salad shot’ was glorious, hahaha!

Also, I think you need a trick with something big to draw a big crowd. Like a big inflatable object. In the states we have all of the inflatable pool floats that are food items like slices of pizza or a donut. I think those would be cool to do a trick with in the summer time.

I used to do kind of loosely scripted plays, and one of the games we played was if we noticed someone wearing a band or musician shirt we'd work their lyrics into the show. Sometimes the person notices, or other audience members notice and it's like an inside joke. And sometimes they remain clueless and it's just super funny for you. This probably doesn't translate into the challenges you were looking for, but it's still a fun game to play!

However, my challenge for you would be... to do a show where you make a magic trick with only your feet! (do put a tarp under your bum if you do something like this on the street, though :P)...

From what I've seen a lot of magic requires a certain measure of preparation. Can you provide enough diverse preparation to only do a show where you react to different audience members' input?
That is, every spec of magic performed is in reaction to something someone in the audience says or does.

Challenge: Do an entire show one handed, or do a show entirely without walking (you can jump, skip, crawl, hop, but not walk or run to move yourself around).

I would suggest doing trying to do a new street performance in a new location every time, that way you end up with a fresh set faces every single time. Might be interesting. Maybe even add a new concept to your show each and every time, until you have this insanely long chain of tricks that eventually turn into this one huge amalgamation magic trick that was made up by various smaller tricks that can only be completed by performing each show. Granted....I feel like the logistics of it may be a bit...uh...much? But, it'd be freaking cool.

These crowds you guys get are MASSIVE I never see stuff like this in America...but maybe I just don’t visit the right cities 😂
Also, to your challenge thing: what if you did an entire magic show silently?
