    THIS WORKS ! You should be on Zildjian's development Team. One of the Majors will nick your work. Thanks Jon, really helpful.

      Ha Ha yes indeed. As with many things that genuinely work, it's so simple it's pretty hard to sell. And it's actually a pleasure to give people something that helps. I have other ideas, so let's see what the future holds. Thanks for getting in touch : )

    Dude. Thank you SO MUCH for posting this! I’ve been using electronic cymbals for all my gigs, and while they work great, most of our venues are very small, and I know everyone up close is hearing “THONK THONK THONK” instead of my ride sound coming out of the PA. I ordered a set of wuhan low volumes and just planned on having a couple overheads but I still want them to sound like good cymbals. This clears up exactly how to make that happen!

    Thanks for this, Johnny. I am an audio engineer, just came from listening to a friend's band live, and the cymbals were overwhelming in the venue. Doing some research about a solution, found your video. This is a great solution to reducing volume, and restoring the tone with tape is terrific.

    I have just tossed my old electronic kit away and set up my 4 piece kit(18”BD) with the new evans DB one heads and got a cheap set of low volume cymbals. It dosnt take up much more room but I get to play my acoustic kit to practise as well. I also saw where someone added one of those Yamaha EAD microphones and plays live with them in a situation needing a lower volume. This video is great to give me some ideas if I need to go down that road as well. Thanks for taking the time to explain your cymbal set up. Cheers!

    Brilliant! I use the bronze gen16 13"hats and 20" ride only, the rest cymbal pads. I played with using some tape like this and, wow man. Really brought the cymbals to life. Many thanks for sharing.

    i honestly think low volumes cymbals should be and will become the standard. traditional cymbals are just too freaking loud for practice and small gigs which is what most of us are doing. the traditional cymbals have screaming loud frequencies that make you go deaf and cause everyone to have to crank loud as hell during practice and its really not necessary for 97% of uses. The low volumes sound great when recording me and my friends just jamming in a room and the mix in the room sounds much more balanced and tolerable.
    20:40 and good point here didnt realize how much freedom low volumes offered just another reason i believe they will become the new standard
    Thanks for these tips very interesting and knowledgeable will definitely put these concepts into practice

    I just got a Pearl Traveler kit for small venues, convenience, and storage issues and added inexpensive Resanito lo-volume cymbals. They sound 'pretty good' but I'm experimenting with various sizzler additions and now I'm definitely going to add Gash Tape to my experiments. Thanks for taking time to make and share this.

      Its fun to play with the DSP if you have the last updates before Zildjian got cold feet and cancelled it. otherwise mics give the sound engineer more confidence. There's a lot of background noise from the DSP when put through a PA.

  • @SimoAnto96

    Wow, really thank you for this video! My band's drummer has an electronic kit which works pretty well on the drum pads side, but sucks a bit on the cymbals side because of crosstalk issues, as well for the feeling reason. However he also has a Millennium low volume cymbals set, so we could try this tip. Maybe the combination of electronic drums and taped and miked low volume cymbals could be the right things for the very small venues we play around!

    • @jono540
      @jono540  7 місяців тому

      It could well be. I play these cymbals in lots of small venues, where usually you can't get away with bringing any sort of drum kit. I will post a video about this shortly.

    have you ever experimented this with triggers on low volume cymbals? Would this still dampen them enough for triggers? I live in Kansas City and I think a lot of jazz drummers i know who do wedding/dinner gigs would really get some benefit out of this.

  • @billnicholas1381
    @billnicholas1381 7 місяців тому

    I have the L80 and I find using a regular 14 hat on the bottom and one of the L80s on top gives a better sound. The tape also works on mesh heads on accustic drums.

    • @jono540
      @jono540  7 місяців тому

      Yes using a regular bottom cymbal will help a lot. The L80's are particularly dead sounding compared to other low volume cymbals, maybe try some other cheap ones and see how you find them. they will have a bit more tone.

  • @sebastiangomezmusic
    @sebastiangomezmusic 2 місяці тому

    I was experimenting with that for home lessons and student recitals cuz I hated making students learn on an electric drumset and also arrived at taping and it makes a good difference
    I wonder if different tape, or even some adhesive tin or copper foil would change the tone or resonance?

    Anyone who's tried this, did you find any difference between using the electrical tape or if Gaff works as effectively or differently?

    • @jono540
      @jono540  9 місяців тому +1

      gaff tape leaves residue on your cymbals, and is harder to play with, plus when the sticks strike gaff on the top there's no definition.
