Learn How to Paint "RACOON AND APPLE BARREL" with Acrylic - Paint & Sip - Step by Step Harvest Scene

- VIDEO DESCRIPTION - This painting tutorial will take you through easy to follow, step-by-step instructions on how to paint this seasonal animal portrait landscape image of "RACOON AND APPLE BARREL" with acrylic paint. You'll learn to draw a basic outline providing good structure and balance to the layout. Then, you'll learn simple painting techniques that will help you to develop a realistic rustic wooden harvesting container overflowing with crisp red and yellow apples with a cute woodland creature peeking from behind. The change of seasons in the country from summer to fall brings along a time of crop gathering on the farms, fun family activities and vibrant autumn colors. In this painting you will learn how to create an out of focus forest farm background, a bushel of brilliant shiny fruit and a small animal with a curious expression on his face. Using color theory to guide us through mixing various colors, we'll develop depth in the old wooden barrel, form in the shapes of the apples and texture in the racoons fur. This painting is created in an impressionistic style using loose brush strokes, simple blending techniques and a little stippling for added volume in certain areas. You could use your imagination to customize this image to represent a distinct type of apple, such as Granny Smith, Red Delicious, McIntosh, Fuji, Gala or Honey Crisp. Or you could change the animal to a squirrel, cat, pig, goat, dog, possum or even a hedgehog. It could be a sunrise, or a sunset with a blue sky or clouds floating by. You'll learn how to paint this landscape image filled with crisp notes of the Autumn season leading up to winter. Using simple painting techniques to add color contrast, as well as highlights and shadows, you'll bring the image to life with a 3-d photo realistic quality. You'll learn how to utilize a dark background for an easy way to add dimension to the form and shape of the animal. The bold vibrant colors add an excitement to the piece, but allow it to have a sense of quiet stillness allowing the viewer to let their imagination bring them to a nostalgic moment in their life. With the construction of the composition you'll have fun with the simplicity of the process, but you'll also learn some valuable lessons that you can utilize in future work! This painting is sure to impress the viewer and compliment the décor of any room. Using only 3 brushes and 7 colors we'll create this conversational masterpiece with a magnificent lively seasonal energy. So let's get painting and let's get sipping!

STEPS:
1. pencil - Draw outline of barrel, apples and racoon
2. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint background with black and green
3. #10 round brush - Paint base coat of racoon with black, brown and white
4. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint main area of barrel with black, rust, brown, yellow and white
5. #10 round brush - Paint base coat of apples with red and yellow
6. #10 round brush - Finish barrel with gray (made in step 3), black, white, brown, rust and yellow
7. #2 round brush - Paint racoon nose and eyes with black, gray and white
8. #10 round brush - Paint racoon fur with black, gray, brown and white
9. #10 round brush - Paint apple shadows with black, brown, red and yellow
10. #10 round brush - Paint highlights on apples with yellow, white, red and brown
11. #2 round brush - Paint whiskers and stems with black, brown and white
12. 1/2 inch bristle brush - Paint grass with black, green, yellow and white
13. #2 round brush - Sign with black

I feel the same way. I never learned what the different brushes are and what they are best used for or the different bristles.... NONE of that. Thats basics that should be taught in a college class. I have learned so much and doing so much better than I ever did in college.

I wish I could find the one with the three girls and the dresses made of flowers at the beginning of her shows. She is awesome and I wish I had the time to paint every single one of hers. I love her sipping coffee because I do the same while I am painting except for sometimes I stick the paint brush in the wrong glass.

Girl, how did you know honeycrisp apples 🍎 are my fav apple. The easiest way I've seen to paint an apple with such dimension. It's all so dimensional. I bought some (a lot) of your 1/2 brstle brush but have a hard time with it spraying out. How do you control it so well? Love ❤ everything you do...Be safe and keep on keeping on..
Hi Cindy, I think they should be everyone's favorite apples...lol! As for the bristle brushes, when I need the bristles to be kind of tight and together, I will load it with a lot of paint and then squish it on the side of the palette. The wet paint inside the bristles will kind of stick them together when pressed. I've been using that same brush for about 10 years now, so I've had tons of practice with it. I hope these tips help. Do you paint with straight paint kinda thick right out of the container, or do you add water to thin it up before you paint?
My paints seem to be kinda thick.
Hi Stephanie, For these tutorials I'm using a thin bodied student grade paint from Blick Materials called Blickrylics. They don't have the best pigment, but I like the consistency for layering and blending affects and I don't have to add water unless the needed. I sell small sample sizes of the colors I use on my website (link below) if you want to try them before you invest in the larger bottles.

Hello Michelle, May I ask a quick question please? I was gifted Master's Touch brand acrylics. In alot of your tutorials you use Green Oxide, Mars Black and Fire Red. I am trying to figure out which colors to use as substitutes for these colors? Can you maybe make a suggestion? I feel like if I am not using the colors you are using I will not get the same results, so I am hesitant to begin. I would love to join you in your fantastic tutorials, I have watched many and love your step by step instructions. Thank you for your time.
Hi Shelly, I'm not too familiar with the Master's Touch brand, however I can describe those specific colors that you're asking about. Green Oxide is an earthy green with quite a bit of brown in it and Fire Red is really red like a fire truck, it steers towards the side of yellow with very little magenta in it. So if you thin it out, you won't see pink. As for Mars Black, my painterly eye can't really see the difference between my black and other blacks,,, just looks black to me. I hope this info helps. This sounds to hard to believe but many moons ago... I had an offer to paint a mural at the Peabody in Memphis Tn. My art was self taught & the thing i lacked was confidence....yeah sometimes i could kick myself. And there ya go. So if any of yall get offers to paint...anywhere....just do it. They wouldn't want you to do it if they didn't like what you do...just my 2 cents.😉
