Thanks for this video Aiden. Main questions I have are....
On the monitoring side of things. Do you link to it with your phone through an app or is all info interogated from the unit?
Can you link a controller like the Victron digital multi control to limit drawn power from shore and control it manually. I see in the Clayton website there is a manual controller but just has a fairly basic functionality, showing charge level, and allowing switching between 240v/12v. It also allows you to jump start your van from the unit.
Does the unit get particularly hot, for instance while DC DC charging whilst travelling?
Are the components inside the Clayton similarly fused and protected like in the Victron system.
As far as I can work out. This does the job of the Victron Inverter, Lynx Distributor, Smart Solar MPPTs, Orion/Buckboost, Smart BMS, Victron Battery. GX GSM, Smart Shunt, GX Touch, Cerbo GX Victron Mega Fuse Holders, Battery Protect. Alot of cable and accessories.
But I think I dont think it has much remote functionality, which is not actually that big a drawback. You wont be able to do cool stuff like linking various sensors like water tank fill level info into the system and show it on something like a Colour Control.

    • @urbanarkoverland
      @urbanarkoverland  10 місяців тому

Yes. This will never have the cerbo functionality. But there is a bca I believe it’s called nun the pipeline. A digital monitoring display. Touchscreen etc. at the moment it is very utilitarian and basic.
The unit does get warm in places. But not hot. A certain amount of ventilation is always advised with all systems especially with a b2b. These get the hottest.

This is my view too. Thankfully we are seeing a change towards higher quality commercial grade plug and play units and this is why I’m trying to stop Clayton being a hidden gem in the industry but I get a lot of stick from Victron fans on the forums and groups 🤣. And rightly so it’s great debate and really good for the industry and community of trade and DIY builders. Renogy’s REGO is another interesting product but Clayton with the new additional battery add on is the winner. It’s just saves so much time and space.

I considered Clayton quite a few years ago ( i believe at the time, it had no solar ability).
Most of my builds for the past 2 years have been heavily made up of Victron components paired with 2-300 amp battery banks.
The compact size if the Clayton is very appealing, but if you need 300a....how big will it be with the add in packs?
I have built using other makes, and what appeals to me about Victron is that it is available world wide and i guess if you had a problem, then you could find someone nearby who could replace a part.
An all in one system definitely has disadvsntages when you get problems (not that i have ever heard bad things about clayton). Although the parts do take up a lot more room , a victron system can be spread around the wall space above a wheelarch.
The big plus to me, is that you can tweak and change a system to suit your requirements.
But i agree....a victron system can get very complicated and doing it as a one off diy project could be a lot of hard work and a steep leaning curve....i have probably had an autolec helping me for the past few days on a reasonable sized system.
Never say never .....but not in my current van😉.

    • @urbanarkoverland

Ye. Some fair points. The add in batteries are very well sized. The 280ah is less than the size of the Clayton itself. And the 100ah is so small.
These units have been in commercial use for 10 years. They do last in an environment where they aren’t necessarily being treated with live either.

Victron really seems to have a lot of momentum. I finally pulled my Epever 8415 to try a Victron 100/50, smartshunt, and Cerbo GX for our off-grid art-studio. I decided to test them head to head, and to be honest, the Victron hasn't fared well, both in full sun and off and on clouds. vs. the Epever I had hoped that I could compare apples to apples with the smart shunt and Cerbo, but that system has enough failings that I couldn't even really do that effectively due to the lack of some simple statistics that it really should have( I may be missing something here). We were going to buy a multiplus 2, for another off grid system to power our garage A/C, and charge our Ford Lightning, but I think we'll likely just use the Epever, since it also does 48v. I've been surprised with the pricepoint, quality and usefulness of the the epever product versus just about everything else.

I used to fit Victron and Sterling systems in narrowboats many moons ago. Victron have been doing this stuff for a long, long time and are the best in the business. I'm surprised there are not more Sterling systems in these vans as it was always the next "go to" in the boat world...
But, Victron's leisure market is a small amount what they do. They make fully, off grid systems for towns in the middle of a deserts... It's shocking what a massive Victron system can do! They don't need to make the stuff smaller because this market is irrelevant to them. These are great bits of kit and I would happily try one. But if I had an unlimited budget, I'd go Victron.
It's been a long time since I have been in the "DC" business, but Victron's customer service/dealers were always spot on.
Microsoft vs Apple is a great metaphor. Apple is user friendly no matter the skill level. Thus, everyone uses it. Microsoft run the world the modern world because it is infinitely adaptable...

Hi I think it is way overpriced and only fills the market for those that are unsure of electrics. The top of the range unit only provides 160Ah. I can build the same unit but instead of 160Ah I can get 400Ah and cheaper. My advice is to lower the price and make it more appealing to those that can build it cheaper. You will sell a lot more. Turnover instead of a large profit.

    • @urbanarkoverland

Totally disagree. It doesn’t only fill the market for those unsure if electrics. It bolsters a market where space time and money is a premium. Not sure what system you are building at 420ah for the same money. But I’m out on that. Professional van builders are installing these. So it has nothing to do with knowledge.

Not at that price it's not I have a bigger setup with much more potental to add on I put together for much less you just need to know what you're looking for and where. Renogy 200ah lithium 620w single solar panel, tr orion 12 12 30, mppt 100 50, lynx distributor 1000, renogy 3000w inverter all of that fits under my double seat along with the diesel heater around £1700 with wiring, crimps, fuses and switch panels isolter switches and trip switch.
