Thank you so much for sorting this all out. I'm no dummy - I have worked for over two decades as a marine electrician and I have a degree in software engineering. I love Victron products, but they need some serious help (from you perhaps?) on making their naming/marketing understandable.

    Hey Nate,
I am watching you channel for a long period of time, you are doing a great job!
You mentioned the negative watts flowing into your batteries, there is an easy solution, because you are using the shunt just as multimeter, you could swap in and out (I have made this accidentaly :D)
I am using a multiplus 2000VA (24V DC), one thing you could mention is that, for setting some of the important values (float/bulk voltage, absorption time) you need a MK3-USB adapter and the victron connect application for linux/mac/win... The default float voltage of the multiplus was to high (27.4V instead of 27V).
Keep doing what you are doing ...
greetings from austria (cows not kangaroos)
    cheers

I watched to the end, i guess i'm one of the 6 people, lol. This is an awesome video, I am still a year or two from my build and I can never learn too much prior to my build. I plan on a transit build similar to your recent build. I would like to have the electrical system be able to function as a backup power cell if I lose household power. My home has solar but no battery backup. If I lose power, and the panel doesn't see incoming power, the solar shuts down. I wasn't sure if this would be possible, however I will now do some research on the multiplus 2 split phase to see if this can achieve the goal. Once again, thanks for the video.

First off, thank you for all of the great content! I am looking to build an off grid system for my travel trailer and I feel confident doing it by myself due to the content and the products/kits you provide.
I have a question though - I noticed the multiplus II 3000va is the biggest inverter/charger you offer on your website, that works for my 50 amp travel trailer. Is that is too small to run 2 ACs (short amount of time)? Or should I step up to the 5000? In any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    - and also for remembering that some of us van people are not on 120V shore and appliances, but 230V (I am in Europe) - since the US is probably a bit more mature in van stuff, a lot of vids are 120V only. So - thanks for the 230V angle 🙂
My question - some of the charger/inverters have MPPT and GX as part of the package. But would you go for those for simplicity or can a case be made for keeping MPPT and/or GX as separate components?

    MultiplusII 2x120.
Love my system - except when plugging into a 120v 15-20amp shore.
The 50amp dogbone combines L1 and L2. This makes L1 and L2 in phase and the multi pops the shore breaker.
Ever heard of this? Any workarounds?
Currently just running a charger connected to the Lynx.
    Cut L2 in?

    • @EXPLORISTlife
      @EXPLORISTlife  Рік тому

Something else is going on. When you connect 50A shore power cord into a 15A outlet, L1 and L2 isn't 'combined' as a 15A outlet only has L1. Instead, L1 is being SPLIT into L1 and L2. I'd suspect your shore power input current limit is too high and the multiplus is trying to draw too much power from shore. Turn that down to ~10 in your cerbo or victronconnect app and that should fix the problem.

You are a godsend! Victron makes crappy videos made by electrical engineers for other electrical geeks. Not for the User of their products in vans. So frustrating to try to understand what each of their component does so I can make an informed choice about my own electrical grid upgrade. I have an older RV and very lost as to what to use from their line of products.
    Typical questions I have are:
What are the functions and constraints of the Multiplus series?
Do I need a Cerbo GX?
Does the Touch 50/ 70 Display panel work sans the Cerbo GX, directly with the Multiplus?
We need documentation from Victron on each of their products, what it does, what it does not do, what are the add ons that each product will support, what other products work with Victron (is it brand agnostic?), etc. Then we need videos to bring this information to people and potential buyers of these components. Victron, like every typical manufacturer never spends time on the marketing end. So while they make products, we don't know what they do! Frustrating.
Thank you for filling that vacuum with your excellent line of videos. Very grateful to have them!

I do have a small Inverter Generator, 1600W (2000 surge) with a NEMA L5-30R, 13.3A @ 120V capability, BUT I really don't want a gas generator. Howerver, maybe that "Power Assist" means I could combine my Battery output with the lil Generator output to meet my AC evening energy needs??? 🤔
Our couples camper is the 2023 Grand Design Imagine 22MLE. She came with a tiny 25amp/300w Charge Controller, 1@165W Solar Panel (I'm sure I need another one maybe two??? 🤔), a 12v Refer, and NO Inverter.
We'd like to run Air Conditioning, especially for ~8-10hrs at night & sleeping. It's a 15,000 BTU, 1720 Watt, 15.4 amp unit (I'll add soft start).
So far all I have updated is to a 230Ah battery, not sure if I need two??? 🤔

When I starting building my home off-grid system I wanted to get something that my multiple Victron MPPTs could efficiently utilize but I didn't think I would grow to the system I have today. I started with the small simple 1200w inverters, moved to 2400w inverter then got the Quattro. I have 900a of 24v batteries (12v300a 2s3p) and these are also on my "I wish I had decided to go 48v" list. I now have to decide to keep expanding on 24v or try to sell what I have to get up to 48v.

@@Yiveytubea higher voltage is more efficient & yes thinner cabling can reduce costs significantly, but with the higher voltages you can generally get more output for similar price of a lower voltage system also, I believe what ur paying for basically is the current ability of MOSFETS used, so going from 100A @ 12v = 1200W output, to using 100A @ 48v = 4800W output using a similar size MOSFET. If ur going to use 48v system on a camper or boat you will need to assess if you have the realestate for solar pv & may need to look at a higher VOC pv panels.
24v server rack style batteries are available & are a good option for incorporating into buses or campers with 24v systems already, as it can make some wiring & charging options easier at installation.

    • @silviuflorescu6838

If you have large roof for solar panels, go with 48v. It's cheaper and more efficient.
Still, you might have difficultues to get a dc-dc charger from your alternator.
If the roof area is small, go with 12 or 24v.
Just take in cosidetation that your mppt controller will start to charge once the voltage of the panels are +5V over the battery voltage.

My experience with Victron Multiplus II 2x 120 is incompatibility with NEC 210.8 required GFCI 15/20A, 30A, and 50A feeder outlets. The Victron forum is full of threads related to MP2 inverter chargers tripping GFCI devices. My Multiplus II regularly trips an Eaton 30A GFCI breaker, an Eaton AFCI/GFC 20A breaker, and a Leviton GFCI outlet. This occurs while in Charger-only mode. While the MP2 will work on RV parks which lack GFCI 30A at the pedestal, Victron needs to correct this. Recommend updating this video to address which Victron I/C products are fully compatible with US NEC GFCI feeder requirements. This will greatly impact owners parking RVs at home or in storage.

    • @EXPLORISTlife
      @EXPLORISTlife  Рік тому +2

That's going to be a problem with ANY inverter/charger with an built in neutral to ground relay. This is indeed something Victron is working to find a solution on. There are GFCI breakers out there, though, that have a slow enough ground fault trip speed to still be within NEC code but will not be tripped by the speed at which the neutral to ground bond relay activates.

If I were to buy a new 5th wheel I'd switch to Victron gear. My issue is I like my power and need to decide on either dual MP2 and each one can do 25A to each leg of the panel independently or do dual MP2/2x120 and wire them in parallel to get a 50A combined total but can be split in whatever amount is needed up to the combined 50A. At least that is how it was explained to me. More wiring, more j-boxes but Victron component prices are about the same.

Battery bank capacity is usually the deciding factor for most people there. dual multiplus 3ks is going to take at least 800Ah @ 12V (and would warrant a 24V battery bank) and the single multiplus can be run at 400Ah @ 12V.
