I've heard nothing but good things said about Still Life from basically everyone, and that it's an all-timer of a concept album.
BUT, the one most people talk about as one of the greatest metal albums ever, at least from things I've heard and read, is Blackwater Park. That's the one that got me into the band, and I have never looked back. Before they went into the all-out prog realm from Heritage on, I do think BP is their masterpiece for that first era. (I love all their stuff, new and old. Complete Opethian here.)

I actually think for your next reaction you should do the previous song on this album, Moonlapse Vertigo, it has my favorite Opeth opening and is just overall a great song, it does have some demon but also has just as many clean vocals, if not more.
For a Newpeth recommendation, I really like “I Feel the Dark” which has some Oldpeth vibes but is completely Newpeth.

Funny you say that because I was a huge tool fan (still a fan) 10 years ago. I was first introduced to them with sober in the mid 90's, but didnt really pay attention until schism came out. After that I took another break until around 2010 when I became fanatical. That said, I burned out pretty quick and was hugely disappointed with their Lateralus (without the originality and passion that made Lateralus so good) clone of their last album. Tool is great dont get me wrong but at this point it's already getting overrated for me. That being said they are still in my top 10 bands of all time. Interestingly enough if it weren't for Tool I probably would have never given Opeth a try. Opeth to me is on another level and I think Tool fans and Opeth fans tend to overlap (I would put Mastodon and maybe Dream theatre in that group as well).

The Opeth album you were referencing that's considered to be one of the best metal albums of all time is Blackwater Park. "Bleak" and "The Drapery Falls", which you've already heard, are from that album. The title track needs to be on your upcoming playlist. The whole album is a masterpiece and listening to it start-to-finish, uninterrupted is one of those things you must treat yourself to if you're a fan of metal or even just a music lover generally. Blackwater Park is metal's answer to Dark Side of the Moon.

13:15 - If you keep listening, over time, you will like it more because of the demon. That's how it goes for most people who don't necessarily like growl vocals, myself included. I started on "Bleak", "Harvest", and "The Drapery Falls", listening for the non growl moments - eventually, I began to hear how the song needed them (aside from Harvest). It's interesting to watch you go through this process in real time lol

  • @netragtulb

Okay, since you're kinda asking; here's a overview of their albums:
Their first albums Orchid, Morningrise and My Arms, Your Hearse are what I would consider their early work. In style they are similar to the genre defining progressive death metal masterpieces that would come later. But there is a very clear difference in terms of quality. Mikaels vocals aren't that well tuned yet and the instrumental parts are a bit amateurish at times. There definately are some good things buried in there and some people really like these albums, but I honestly can't stand to listen to them for their full length. I think you haven't done anything from that time period yet, but I have a feeling you would not like them very much either.
What comes after is Still Life and Blackwater Park. Honestly, the leap in quality of these two albums to what came before them is still mind boggling to me. A lot of people consider Blackwater Park to be THE death metal album and at least in my circles Still Life is held in almost the same regard. Still Life to me feels a bit more epic, whereas Blackwater Park is a bit more grimey and bleak. Both play with the mixture of melodic acoustic sections and ultra heavy distorted death metal that made tons of people fall in love with them. Since you have a hard time with the demon sometimes you will probably not like all the songs on there (in fact, I think you disliked the Blackwater Park title track if I remember correctly), but there's always some gorgeous mellow sections to keep you coming back.
Deliverance and Damnation are the two albums that came next. They were originally planned as a double album, but were then released individually in short succession. Deliverance is heavy and agressive and Damnation is mellow and depressing. I personally think that the Deliverance album is a bit forgettable and has some weaker songs on it. But since you came to like the title track maybe you would like some of the other songs. Damnation, however, is almost universally loved and many people consider it one of their strongest albums. You have heard Death Whispered A Lullaby and Windowpane from it and I would say the rest of the album is very much in line with those songs. It's not very varied in style, all the songs kind of sound the same. But they are all very beatiful and stylistically pretty unusual compared to the whole rest of their catalouge.
Next in line is Ghost Reveries. It has the fan favorites Ghost of Perdition, The Baying of the Hounds, Harlequin Forest and The Grand Conjuration. I believe it was first planned as a concept album about some ghost story, but later they gave up the concept. You can still hear the remnants of that origin story though. To me the album kinda feels like a mix of an Edgar Allen Poe poem and a Sherloc Holmes story put to music, if that makes any sense.
Watershed is their last true metal album and it is a heavy one. You have heard Burden and The Peel from it, which I think you both liked. The rest of the album is quite true to the sound of those songs and my third favorite after Still Life and Blackwater Park (maybe together with Damnation). I would recommend you to listen to Coil and Heir Apparent at some point. They kind of go together. Not in the seamless Tool Parabol/Parabola kind of way, but they do fit together nicely and I think it just makes a lot of sense to do them like that. Make yourself ready to get assaulted though.
With Heritage Mikael retired the demon and the band started a more classic prog sound. I believe it was also around that time that Keyboard Guy joined the band. I'm not gonna write much about these albums because I'm honestly not a big fan of them. I don't dislike them, in fact I prefer them to their first three albums. They just haven't left much of an impression on me personally. But it seems like you like them and I'm sure there are some other people here that can tell you interesting stuff about them. They are certainly not bad, just not really my cup of tea.
I thought you read these things way too often by now and wouldn't like these long winded posts, but since you said you'd like to learn more about the band and the albums I figured I'll just go ahead and give you my thoughts.

The only thing that i disagree with you is that i consider their second album, Morningrise, as a masterpiece. As a matter of fact, it was their first album i listened and to this day it is still my favourite. I agree that a good choice for her to listen is the combo Coil/Heir Apparent, it would be interesting to see her reaction to those two played one after the other. And from the no demon era, i think the last record is the best of the bunch.

I don't agree with the part about My Arms, Your Hearse. I feel this album is closer in style and quality to Still Life than it is to Morningrise and Orchid. It feels like a midway point to me, a transition album. And I think it's one of their best even tho there are some flaws here and there. April Ethereal, When, Demon of the Fall ? These songs are all banger and the rest of the album is really great too.

Well, I'll tell you there has been several keyboard guys in Opeth (at least two that I remember)... You know the last one... But in their live shows of 2003 (around that time) you can see the other...
If you wanna hear, I'll keep suggesting this song... A Live Judgement at Shepherds Bush Empire 2003.
You can also check by yourself the Deliverance song performed there (it has a heavier and raw feeling, also featuring drummer Martin López, not in the band since 2005 I think, he was replaced with Axenrot who leaved Opeth some weeks ago).
As you can tell a lot of stuff happened in Opeth.

This song could be easily on radio stations...without growls... but in my country even in rock music stations no one plays Opeth , because it is categorised as "death metal" , meanwhile they have so much calm and groovy songs and they visit Poland 3 or 4 times a year... they deserve to be recognised worldwide... If Metallica and Korn can be played on radio then why not Opeth ??
