Opeth is one of the bands I absolutely must see every time they roll through the USA. I think I've seen them 4 or 5 times over the past 18 years, and it's never enough! Last time I saw them was on the last leap day, Feb 29, 2020! Got another Feb 29 coming up! Can't believe it's been 4 years already. Where are you, Opeth!!
Right there with ya! I'm at five times. First time was the Damnation/Deliverance tour if I remember right. I almost missed a show a few years ago. Right after I got their logo tattooed on me. A friend informed me that if I ever miss a show in my area again of theirs he's gonna get the money together to knock me out and laser the ink off.... guess I gotta keep going.... oh darn
@@jeremyzier8706 I had a similar experience with Tame Impala. I saw them in Dallas in 2013, and it was the same tour as the Chicago show, which got recorded for their "Live Versions" album. My friends & I always thought of that RSD release as a keepsake for our show. Lol. During that tour, they played an extended version of "Half Glass Full of Wine," with a lengthy jam in the middle that's not a part of the original EP version.
I'm waiting for the heavy part to see the look on Geebz' face!!! Love this track, one of my favorite from Opeth. Timeless album. Geebz, we gotta get you to do "Moonlapse Vertigo" from this same album.
When you put the story in context the music hits harder. If I'm not wrong the protagonist of the story comes back from exile (the village marked him as a monster for being a non believer), looking for his lost love Melinda, only to find her become a nun of sorts. He says to her "I've come for you in great dismay / all faith forever has been washed away". And at the end Melinda says to him "My promise is made / but my heart is thine". Truly a remarkable story inside a phenomenal album!.
Listening to this album as a whole is all the more powerful as it is a concept. Face of Melinda in particular is devastatingly emotional when allowed to lead directly into the next track, Serenity Painted Death. Absolute masterclass. So happy you got to rinse on this, Geebz!❤
Opeth from this period where lights out with every track. Still Life - Blackwater Park - Damnation/Deliverance one of the best four album runs of all time.
Still Life is my personal favorite Opeth album, every single song is a masterpiece. Exceptional story telling both musical and lyrical. It really captures all the emotions for what romance means in an occult, zealot village.
Right when he’s singing “All faith forever has been waaaaaaaashed awaaaaay” that’s pretty much when my eyes roll back and I float away. It’s so beautiful and heartfelt
This is a short list of songs from VERY VERY skilled bands with different genre Unexpect - Desert Urbania Unexpect - Megalomaniac tree Animals as leaders - CAFO Animals as leaders - Ka$cade Planet X - Quantum factor Planet X - Desert girl Pomegranate Tiger - Cyclic Jason Richardson & Luke Holland - Tendinitis Pomegranate Tiger - Entities (album) Snarky puppy - Outlier Cloudkicker - Beacons (album) Planet X - Ataraxia (just put it at 5:47 lol, its 3 times 15/16 followed by some wizard stuff lol)
Would be awesome if you could run the whole album through on a mega episode, since it's a concept album... Other albums you could that with are My Arms your Hearse (also opeth which IMO is even better) .. but dream theatre Awake or Metropolis pt 2... I'd sign up to your patreon to see that
Lovely song by one of my favourite bands. I must say, I prefer the live versions (and that goes for many of their songs, especially the older ones): the vocals are more natural and intimate, and without the overdubs, the guitar melodies are cleaner and punchier.
This was the song that got me into the band. It's very accessible compared with some of their stuff, to me. Very beautiful sounding. Makes the harshness feel more deliberate when they juxtapose it like this. Got me curious.
Yo dude! Since you have pulled back from just reacting to songs, I hope you aren't depriving yourself of listening to bands like Opeth in your spare time! You might want to save some songs for UA-cam in case someone requests them, but at this point I'd rather you enjoy yourself. I mean, Opeth has so many amazing songs, if you only listened to half of their discography you'd still have plenty to make videos about.
I would love it if you did a song from Down. This is Phil Anselmo’s (Pantera) side project/ supergroup. Hail The Leaf from their 1995 debut album. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Hey! So I have suggested this before, but since you put Opeth it connects well: Do some Orphaned Land, middle-eastern/oriental metal. Sometimes with orchestra. Sometimes with belly dancers. There are two connection here: One is Steven Wilson, who not only produced some of their albums, but also performed songs for them (in live shows). Another is that Opeth had influence over them, and one of their songs ( Chains Fall To Gravity ) really has a strong Opeth vibe (but honestly not my favorite). I think it was produced by Wilson to, but not sure. Either way, they are really great and you will enjoy it!
Can't believe I'm seeing someone else recommend Orphaned Land. Honestly feels like Noone knows them. Unsung Propehts and Dead Messiahs is an amazing album
Great album, but not their best album. That would be their next album. I like this album a lot, but the one complaint I have about this album is the production. Mike's voice is too echoey and the mix was flat. Not taking anything away from this album because it is great. 8 out of 10
Ah, Opeth... One of the very best non-Japanese bands of all time! The best live music function I ever saw/heard was Opeth and Pain of Salvation (PoS being the supporting band) at HIFK's building in Helsinki, Finland in December 2011.
spot on commentary... I would add that they get a little lost in prettentious chords that don`t make sense musically... interesting band that would have been so much bigger if they would`ve kept it simpler and cleaner, giving us beautiful music... it`s like music made by engineers or math teachers
PREVIOUSLY released on Patreaon last year - OMG I miss that old opening Hahahaha
The old opening was brilliant!
Thinking of bringing it back :)
Agreed! Love this opening so much!
@@KeyOfGeebz I would 100% support that. It's iconic!
This album is unreal. The Moor is a musical phenomenon, strongly recommend to react to that!!!

Classic! Every song on Still Life is 10/10
Definitely
Right
Yes, specially Serenity Painted Death
It's a perfect album
It's a glorious day when I see a Geebz Opeth reaction on youtube. ❤
Thank you!

Seconded !
Yes please! Best track on a perfect album!
"Godhead's Lament" from the same album has one of if not THE best acoustic section in an Opeth's song.
I'd be inclined to agree if Bleak didn't exist
I think I’m going to agree with you on this one. That section is magic, especially with those wonderful harmonies floating over the top.

Love this album so much. Masterpiece!❤🖤🙌
This is one of my favorite albums ever. Happy album for bass freaks.
This was a great review, thanks Geebz!
Mikael's vocals are stunningly beautiful. This song is one of my all time faves of any band.
Right when he’s singing “All faith forever has been waaaaaaaashed awaaaaay” that’s pretty much when my eyes roll back and I float away. It’s so beautiful and heartfelt
7:53 "Modulation Resets" thats what that's called? Ooopoweee makes the song so dynamic and adds drama.
Thank you Geebz
Aaaw, yesssss!
My first and favourite Opeth album!
Oh man, incredible song
Sir you always make my day. It’s been a while but it’s so good to see you around and well ❤ Love you man
PS: Love your take on it :)
Opeth 🔥 always love Opeth. I would to see more Between the Buried and me on here! Your reactions to them were amazing
Beautiful music 🎶
My personal favorite Opeth album!
one of the best melodic opeth songs ever

@@planetcaravan2925how the hell is it boring? it has more going on than most acoustic songs from any other artist lol

Great video. I haven’t listened to Opeth in a while and I need to remedy that.
Such a good song
Opeth!! 🖤

Awwwright!!
Great choice!
Den ständiga resan by Opeth. It's in their native language, no words will dilute the music. :P
Oooo, any opeth react by the D'composer is always a delight. H'all'riiight
Hell yeah!
Sup Geebz. I'm so looking forward to seeing solstafir nattmal on the channel soon
This is still in my top 10 albums ever. I was 16ish when I bought this. I'm 41 now.
The greatest band on the planet
Ahhh, I do miss the days of Geebz & Opeth....

There a few people who got familiar with them so far, and they all enjoyed!
It's time for Geebz here to find out too!
instant click
do you only take suggestions from Patreons?
Im not familiar with Opeth... but I just got a "metal Moody Blues" feel from this 😂
Listen to the Damnation album…it’s all mellow Opeth like this…
Not too far off. Mikael (vocalist/guitarist/songwriter) does say his roots are in Deep Purple and '70s prog rock
Personally, i like Benighted alot more than this track but its still really good!
The bass is played on a fretless instrument, learned that a bit ago
And now you've brought it up lol
Hear Lamentari From Denmark. they are amazing!!
Still Life is their best imo so so good but they have a lot of good ones
The moor would be a better choice than this
agreed
everything from still life is amazing.

The roundhouse tapes version is way way way way way way way better
