It's interesting to hear Mikael's voice almost "breaking" into the way he used to scream back in the day, specifically at around the 14:11 to 14:19 mark - you can tell he wants to go there, but doesn't. Good for him, absolutely the correct move, but for die hard fans it's like the Roundhouse Tapes is right around the corner, it's right there. Great video Lauren! Bit late to the party myself, but always lovely to see Opeth being covered, especially live.
The live performance of "Sorceress" from Redrocks is awesome, and the keyboard guy is doing a great job. Also, he appears on the live in Sydney concert. You can try the song "A Fair Judgement", it's an epic one.
I laughed out loud at the first shot of Keyboard Guy. Also laughed toward the end when he was dramatically draped over the keyboard. I have to admit this sounded great.
If keyboard guy is your guilty pleasure, check out Opeth - Sorceress live at the Red Rock, it’s his song so to say 😊 He’s playing his ass off during that one
Sorceress is one of their songs that somehow sounds heavier in their live version, which I of course appreciate. At least the one from the Red Rocks concert.
Hi Lauren. Happy New Year. Thank you so much for doing more reactions of my favourite band Opeth. You are right about this live version being even better than the studio ...which was brilliant in itself. Looking forward to your next reaction of all the bands you do. I really love your channel and how you describe the tracks. Take care, stay safe. Peace and love from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
@@MusicCatsandCoffee Thank you so much for your reply Lauren. Oh by the way I can well understand why you like keyboard guy so much. He really slams those keys and adds a lot to the band. Also he has got a cracking voice which supplements Mikaels perfectly. Take care, stay safe. Peace and love from Alan Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
Yesssssaaaaa!!! I finally made it home after work. Immediatly took my earplugs. What a band, what a reaction ( just love your genuine style, but you knew that already 😀). I'm glad for you that you see and feel that they are live on stage just as good as they sound on album. One suggestion: from the same concert Sorceress. It was the opening song of this evening. You will see keyboardguy much more because of the intro. There will be no growls (unfortunately as far as I'm concerned 😄) But believe me it's a killer song. It's like a caterpillar easily crushes everything on its way (you'll understand this when you hear the song). A killer riff. All the good 🤘🤘🍺
If you can find it somewhere, you have to check out the "making of" part of the live DVD (as it were) "Lamentations"... That documentary details the recording of both Damnation and Deliverance, and is a fantastic insight into how these guys just made it happen. Freaking laid back and awesome musicianship. And yeah, Åkerfeldt used to have a fantastically deep and powerful "growl", no dub or effects. I think it kinda took its toll on his voice eventually, so he tries to keep it at a minimum nowadays (the last 4 albums had no growling vocals whatsoever, and songs from these albums make up an increasingly larger part of any given live setlist of theirs).
Lady L, if you've never seen them Live, it is a must. Mikael is sooo funny talking with the audience. They always sound great. I've seen them play using Death vocals and I've seen them play not using Death vocals. Both shows... AWESOME!! Keep up the good work and we will always be here for you. 🤘👍🤘😎🎵🎶🎵 BTW, the Death vocal thing; it's not hard to learn or do if you use the proper technique. You use what's know as false vocal chords. I've learned how to do it. It's fun. I sometimes use it as a speaking voice; especially if somebody honks me off. It totally FREAKS people out; which, I have to say, is the fun bit. The look on their face when they first hear it, Priceless.😂😂😂😂
I prefer this live version over the studio version sometimes as well. I think it’s because the keyboard sounds in general are way more prominent. Also a lot of the groovier sections are played slightly slower than on the record, at least slower than they used to do it live.
I can do "the demon" as well. It took over a year of practice to "get it" and now I'm 2 years into it and am still improving. Some people find it easier but it did not come natural for me at all and I had to learn Mongolian throat singing first in order to work into it. It's very common in death metal and black metal genres so what he is doing is nothing unique. It uses false vocal folds and/or fry and you basically engage those to get the sound and then sing through it. I"m pretty good at imitating "Mikael Åkerfeldt" style growls. I also like immitating modern "Satyricon" style and "Dark Tranquillity" style and even "Obituary" for fun. It's fun to sound like different artists once you learn the technique and get better at it.
Correct. The only backing track they use is for their intro when they are coming onto the stage at the start of the show. Everything after that is being created live on stage :)
Shoot, I should also add a recommendation to you Lauren. A band called Fates Warning, song, The Light And Shade Of Things. The “official video” of this song is a live version. Excellent musicianship and great vocals.
Mikael has told they were shocked to experience the butt-freezing cold at Red Rocks once the sun had settled. They were quite sure the whole recording would turn out a disaster and really surprised it didn't...
I have no idea how he does it either! But I DO know that healthy (i.e. don't damage your vocal cords) "demon guy" vocals are much more about technique than physical exertion. That's why you don't see him physically looking like he's trying really hard.
Opeth & Porcupine Tree sound better live than the studio/album versions. Musically, Dream Theater also sound better live but James Labrie’s vocals can be hit or miss at times.
Exactly! I've been to Opeth's concert once and I was blown away by their sound quality. And I'm a bit a musician myself. I understand how difficult it can be to make a clean sound in live even if you technically know how to play ))
His vocal technic deffinietely evolved . He used to have much deeper grunt , like here : ua-cam.com/video/WYa6iWeiq68/v-deo.html Now it is a typical growl . You are right about that his vocal could be rerecorded . This video sounds too good to be true . Today it is much easier to make the "ideal video" where everything is leveled as good as possible. All of that is the reason why many people like the older videos, which are less ideal but show truer performance.
If you like keyboard guys check out Epica....they put a lot of effort into making their keys guy be able to rock out and be cool like everyone else in the band.
Katatonia, The Smiths, Opeth? Sold. Maybe you should try some old Soft Cell (Marc Almond), then? Depressing, ironic and pervert in all the right ways... Where the Heart Is would make a nice first forray into their songs ^^
I know it might be an unpopular opinion, but I like Bass Guy more with the short(er) hair. He's not really the type for the long metal headbanging hairstyle and I kinda like it when there's the one guy in the band that stands out because he's not following The Look. Also from everything I learned watching voice teacher reactions on UA-cam, that death metal growling apparently isn't physically very taxing. It's totally normal to just stand there like a normal person and make these sounds. If you see someone doing it in a power stance with very strong facial expressions it's probably just done for the show.
69th like 😏 also he's able to look the same while talking and doing harsh vocals because for ME ....you got more leeway with harsh vocals over singing normally. guessing it's the same with him and thousands of others that feel the same lol
I know Axe is so tight with tempos, but always his live versions are a little slower than original, I prefer Lopez live versions, even if they are a little faster than studio verisons. Lopez gave Opeth their best sound ever and never again has been matched. Sorry for my bad english.
The fandom is real. Keyboard Guy design now available. :D

Your appreciation and enthusiasm for Keyboard Guy alone makes this worth watching!
But really, how can you watch this and NOT absolutely love Keyboard Guy? It's just not possible. Unless you're dead inside.
It's interesting to hear Mikael's voice almost "breaking" into the way he used to scream back in the day, specifically at around the 14:11 to 14:19 mark - you can tell he wants to go there, but doesn't. I'm curious why do you think this is the correct move?

Always love the Opeth reaction 👍

Damn right
Their older live shows from the 2000’s they sounded even better in person. Like better than their records.
Perfect timing for when you're day isn't off to a good start. Thanks so much for this cool as hell reaction.
🔥🔥❤Opeth❤🔥🔥
Woo!

Loving these Opeth reactions! Red Rocks is an amazing show and it doesn’t get any better than the Cusp of Eternity / Heir Apparent double up. Please!!
Yes sir. That's the truth and Nothing but the truth.
Great reaction to a great song. Their Royal Albert Hall live show is really good.
Hi Lauren. Happy New Year. Thank you so much for doing more reactions of my favourite band Opeth.

If someone asked me what that kind of outro is called I'd just answer "EPIC!".
Agreed.

Had to subscribe after seeing you reacted to mudvayne and now opeth!

This show was so much fun. Gojira and Devin Townsend were the openers.
I reccomend you watch this whole Opeth show live at Red Rocks

The bass player is Martin Mendez. He is a Uruguayan/Swedish descent and he weara his hair in a Hispanic style. He is a monster bass player

Don't think opeth uses any over dubs in their live shows, pretty old-schools! Just makes their live shows that much more impressive!

this version to slow ,(Live at Shepherd's Bush Empire, London) is the best
I also think that the drummers that they've had are very underrated
Mikael has told they were shocked to experience the butt-freezing cold at Red Rocks once the sun had settled. They were quite sure the whole recording would turn out a disaster and really surprised it didn't...
At work now, but can't wait to get home and watch the vid 👻👻👻
No, keyboard guy cannot be any cooler.
I cracked up at "was that a disco ball ?" :D You'll see Taylor Swift warming up Opeth before you'll see a freaking disco ball at Opeth live concert :D
Why I can't give you a second like? :D

Please do Sorceress next. I just have a feeling that you would love it
Check out a Gojira concert, Lauren. Bass player guy clearly loves his job! (Opeth and Gojira are my favourite bands).
garden of the titans live at red rocks amphitheatre I have it on vinyl
Check him out in bloodbath when he used to do that

Cause of his accent and his humor also I'm always thinking how he could be one of Sacha Baron Cohen's characters
Lol

good to see keyboard guy and just keyboard players getting some love
I think bands should stick the guitarist in the back on a little riser and move the keyboardist up front where he belongs! :)
