      Haha, I know this is a joke but it's more about pattern recognition than mathematics. Sure everybody can count to 5 or 7 but how many of those people know what a pulse dived equally into 5 or 7 parts FEELS like? Everybody can divide 3 by 4, but what does that FEEL (or sound) like rhythmically? You can learn all the real analysis and advanced topology in the world, but until you actually sit down and deeply learn these patterns, your brain won't recognise them in the same way that musician's brains do.

    Great analysis! And the song is great, too!
    I will say that I hear the finale as 5 5 5 5 7 bah bah instead of 5 5 5 4 8 bah bah. In each of the 5s, the snare lands on the 2nd and 5th tuplets (. S . . S), and so I think that what you interpret to be the snare on the 1st tuplet of the 8 (S . . . . . . .) is actually just the snare of the 5th tuplet of the fourth 5 (. S . . S), which is consistent with the previous three 5s.

      @@meshuggahman3225 what I’m saying is, I GUARANTEE that Mangini submitted that rhythmic pattern but did not come up with the lyrics or write the whole rest of the song. I’m not just talking out of my ass; that is how band songwriting works. It’s not just the 5+5+7 correlation on its own - of course there’s plenty of other songs with that pattern - just not ones that are ALSO about aliens AND by a guy that was EXTREMELY influential to guitarists of Petrucci’s age and background.

    I think this is where Mike can be divisive. I personally would have made the 6/8 clear with the cymbals, while following the melody like [kick, tom, snare backbeat, tom]. It does sound like Mangini is able to do a bit of his own thing here. Everything before that, it was so stiff and robotic, like the band wanted a human drum machine to hit all the notes for all the songs. This seems more like he is hitting the notes he wants, and that's a good thing. Sweet! Love the analysis and the song itself. Would love to see more of this content - perhaps do a Haken song next? Ray Hearne and the boys have some great stuff ;)

    Noob drummer question: do you actually count time in the back of your head every time while you're playing? Or is something that you do only to learn the song?

    • @diegolezano2894
      @diegolezano2894 3 роки тому +7

      It really depends, some drummers don’t but pretty much all great drummers do count while playing every time, whether is practicing or live playing. It allows you to be more precise

    • @hazardeur
      @hazardeur 3 роки тому +12

      well, the goal should be to count it consciously and internalize it to the point that you don't need to count it anymore and by then you will have the time ticking away in the back of your head. I don't think many of the pro's do really count consciously anymore once they reached a certain level of familiarity with a specific song or part. they can just freely move in the time at that point. It also depends on the part and the ability of the drummer. if it's really batshit crazy time stuff you probably find many who count consciously still. Personally, I always try to, whenever possible, avoid to count. I feel i can play way more musical if i have the counting internalized and can use those brain ressources for creativity but it's not always possible

    • @seven8time
      @seven8time 3 роки тому

      Not really. Once you know that 5 beats for example is RLRLL RLRLL or whatever you want to play, you just more focus on that sort of thing, stringing those patterns together. Your hands kinda go on autopilot when your mind knows how the song goes. Some very challenging parts can be counted while playing, but that should be rare. If you’re playing this kind of music and literally counting every single bar, that gets extremely tiring and mentally exhausting without even considering the playing part. You may have to check in here and there or in crazy parts like I mentioned above, but I don’t think many count the entire time during a song with changing time signatures. I mean, you can, but that’s not very enjoyable.

      Depends. Like when I play DT’s Panic Attack I count some parts in the instrumental but most of the song I play from memory

    Reminds me to The Mirror, a 4/4 where Portnoy just changed the way he played and changed the feeling despite Petrucci playing the exact same thing the whole time

    I don't know how people like them can count on complicated time signature like maybe they feel like time has slow down in their perspective. While I still having hard time counting 4/4 and 3/4 correctly

    I know your tom mic is closer to the camera so it looks a bit bigger, but somehow i can't naturally form that image in my mind. It just looks like a massive SM57.
