Of course when Dream and Day Unite came out it was around the same time frame so I've always liked Portnoy too. My favorite DT albums are with Mangini though. Portnoy's pocket is stellar... his dynamics and complementary drumming are better. Not that Mangini doesn't have those things at an insanely high level, but not there with MP. MM is a faster and more technical drummer... his poly-rythms are, to me anyway less feel and more metronome (very precise)... but, what do I know. I am not on their level.

I've been listening to their music since 2008, when I was 15. The way for the first time I heard Six Degrees was just mind-boggling. Totally something fresh, different and unique. I have listened to bands like Nightwish, Evergrey, Ayreon and lots of other metal/rock bands, but DT is simply level or two beyond any band or composer I have heard :)
Was so happy to see them live after 8 years in January in Poland - the show was very very good and I don't care that much about LaBrie's current voice capabilities.
But DT is like an old wine - sometimes you have to stop listening to them for a while, because you might feel sick because of it.

@@rolandverde8771 Nearly. He doesn't seem to have any dynamic range. I hear machine guns and Harley pistons at triple speed through the whole thing. He sounds like he's at the gym working out, hitting as many things as he can in each bar. It feels pointless. But to be fair, Portnoy got there way ahead of him. Incredibly skilled drummers who seem to measure musical quality by their speed and precision, and by their incredible memory of what goes where. But why? Go somewhere guys! But tbh, I think this whole song is long and tedious, with very little in the way of dynamic range, except toward the end. Are they lost in their own cleverness? Are they trying to reach anyone but their hardcore following? Over the past 2 decades they've become so sophisticated they sound samey.

I have never been this addicted to a Dream Theater single. The quality of this song is so high that my anticipation for the rest of the album is higher than any album in the past. I'm so glad I decided to randomly buy the Octavarium album back in 2005 when I was working at Circuit City. I had no idea what the band sounded like. All I knew, being a guitar player, was that John Petrucci was in the band so it had to be good. The day I bought that album was the day my musical life changed forever. Dream Theater has been such a huge part of my life since then and they have actually helped me get through some very hard times. I want to personally thank every member of this band (including MP) for forming this band and being there for me. They don't know they were there for me but they were and always will be.

Dream Theater - "The Alien" lyrics
    [Verse 1]
Look beyond the Earth, heading set for the stars
Interplanetary, some are near, some are far
Terraform a new world, survival for mankind
Options but a few, we are running out of time
    Should you climb aboard
A voyage, the first of its kind
    Ready to explore
All that you've known left behind
    [Chorus 1]
    Our Holy Grail
    Now redefined!
    Our purpose, a thread
    Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand
    Life beyond here
    Digital man
    Alien, changed forever!
New found world in the stars!
    [Verse 2]
    Understand the meaning
Certain we'll extend the scale of consciousness
    Woman, child and man!
Multi planet species out amongst the stars
    Not stuck in and around
    Who and what we are
    Time to climb aboard!
    Countdown to takeoff on time
Systems are online! (Five, four, three, two)
    Farewell to all humankind (One)
    [Chorus 2]
    Our Holy Grail
    Clearly defined!
    Our purpose, a thread
    Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand
    Life beyond here
    Digital man
    Alien, changed forever!
New found world, here we are!
    [Instrumental Break]
    [Chorus 3]
    Our Holy Grail
    Clearly defined!
    Our purpose, a thread
    Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand
    Our Holy Grail
    Read between the lines!
    One purpose, one thread
    Weaving through time!
Now with the means to expand!
    [Outro]
    I am the alien
    Out here in the stars
    We'll search 'til we find!
    No matter how far
    A far better world
    For all human race
    And beyond!

    • @pedrosilvamusician

Honestly, and thats just my opinion, his voice is getting weaker timbre wise. When he goes to his higher register is sounding less and less crisp and Bright, and starting sound more tinier and it sort of hurts. It feels forced. I really prefer his lower range nowadays. It would be perfect seeing the DT guys work with MM on side projects that would be different from, but like LTE, PSMS, etc. I hope future collaborations with MM would be welcomed right away and especially if negativity starts being generated because of the change. Agreed. I also feel that Distance Over Time was the beginning of his true arrival. It was the first time that his creativity came together with a great drum mix. He was good on DT12 and The Astonishing, but the drums were mixed poorly on those albums IMO. All that said, The Alien is even a level ABOVE what he did on Distance. So if DOT was his arrival, then A View from the Top of the World is going to be his total takeover

I don’t remember the auditions as it’s been forever ago, but his drumming is way better on this first single from the new album. I’ve been re-listening to all the albums before the new one drops and I’m up to half of the self-titled now and the mix is worse than ADTOE for drums and bass and overall really. His drumming improved over each album I believe but he really did start to take off more with his creativity from probably TA and hopefully has hit his full stride on this album.

I think Mangini was trying to impersonate Portnoys style those first few years but now he is clearly doing his thing and I believe it started on DOT. The mixes on those first few records with Mangini were also not as good as Distance Over Time. I'm hoping DTs new album will continue with the mixing we heard on "Distance" which captured Mangini`s genius a lot better IMO.

With Distance Over Time we had Untethered angel first, that was a good song but a bit generic, and then, when the full album came out, Pale Blue Dot and At wits End were the highlights.
This song alone could be a highlight from this new album, since it's an epic and it seems like a 2nd part of Pale Blue Dot. Well, we've to wait until October for the rest of the album.
