OHHHHHHHHH NICE!!!!!! I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THIS ONE. Odesza - Last Goodbye!!!!! I've been listening to this song on repeat since it came out. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!
Recovery by Rival consoles, is my favorite use of this effect, the dynamics and automations on the synth parameters make it feel so alive. Prism and Turing Alone both by The Flashbuld use this effect a bit more subtly, but it’s incredibly effective. Silence by Kidnap uses this effect in the second half of the song as well.
I watched a few tutorials on this process and this by far was the most fun approach I found using the arp. I had initially thought of breaktweaker when I first heard it.
@@SynthHackerTV I would also absolutely love it if you did that. Thanks for the super high quality content again, Tom! I suppose you could achieve something similar with ring modulation. I love the way this weird Copenhagen artist Yangze uses it in his track Event Horizon (super cool EP worth checking out.)
i perfectly even recreated the flume - spring drop part with samples chopped together and used the exponential midi to trigger the sound with the lfo tool. with this way you can put any sound in it. you can even enable pwr so you can vary the sound release indepentently on every note . but you need the same envelope like in the video to get that stringy sound
I freaking love songs like these!! I collected some songs that also use this technique hahaha Unknown Brain - Don't Bother Elijah Hill - Better Allen Mock - Phantom Mura Masa - 2gether
Stromaes Track "L'enfer" features this Chord Trick as well. Pretty much the same sound as Odeszas "Last Goodbye" and it was released a month before the Odessa Track..Maybe they got inspired by it.
“Canblaster - Invoc Dolem” Para One, Modeselektor and probably Moderat are my favorite artists that all use this technique in some way or another. The LFO trigger is the one I have used for years, easily implemented in Ableton since 8!
Dude that is so incredibly helpful! I was actually looking for this effect for quite a while - had a rough idea how to do it, but your tips came in super handy! Thanks for taking the time to make this :) Btw. awesome Editing with the subtle Synth Pad in the Background while explaining the details :)
01:36 As you were asking more examples; This future bass kind of vibe also found its way into the more experimental sides of the drum 'n bass scene. Most recently what comes to mind is the track 'Racing Raindrops' by Screamarts. Can highly recommend checking that tune and other productions of his, it's lovely! Also want to give some shouts to the likes of IMANU, The Caracal Project and Circumference. All new wave dnb acts that have incorporated that future sound into dnb, and I know from your content how much you like future house / bass. Bigups on your continued lessons Synth Hacker, you're a gem. Thank you for all the knowledge and joy you spread, you're awesome! ♥️
The Screamarts track is pretty unique I like it! I love IMANU's stuff he's insane, I'll have to give the others a listen too. Thanks for the kind comment!
This is an new technique based off of an old one using a granulizer. Though, I've never seen it done this way, and I like the added control of not having to print the midi to audio, and then using a granulizer to get this effect. You can also use Stutter Edit 2 to do this as well, and you don't need to do anything other than set up the effect, route a midi channel to Stutter Edit itself, and trigger it via midi. But this way is also cool because you can have more control over the notes you want to play during the rhythmic buildup. This is definitely something I'm going to make a chain for and save, because it's super cool. If you also mix this with AU5's Chaos Saw video (he shows a really cool way to create beautiful chords with just 1 note using a few midi plugins in Ableton), then you've *really* got something crazy. Thank you for sharing this technique. There is going to be much fun had with this.
I think the first time I heard something like this was 5 more hours by Deorro? It was only used in the intro but it’s such an incredible way to hook the listener’s ear regardless
I remember I’ve heard a similar effect in one of the 70ies or 80ies disco songs. Just don’t remember anymore if it was Boney M or Eruption, or a similar band who did this during their era
Not sure if this counts as "seen before" but the befaco burst eurorack module is designed to do stuff like this. Not sure how good it is at transitioning from the exponential curve to inline with the beat though
Hi synth hacker been a fan of your channel for a while and I love your videos. Can you please make a video on how to make the pad/key on Majid jordans Caught up please.
Subscribed! Definitely would love more tutorials on sound design like this! Would be sick to have a series on different FX from songs, I feel like it's not done enough!
Great video as always! I'd also love to see a recreation of the pad that comes at 0:46 in Flume - Dreamtime, it's a very simple sound but it has a unique warmness that makes it very special
6:14 - Not sure I understand the accent here, you used a filtered saw pluck for each layer? Not sure I understood what that meant. What do you mean when you say different layers? As in, you are layering different tracks of Serum patches that are all using different saw plucks? Is there another tutorial video you've made with ideas on what you would modulate with Serum's LFO? Or triggering a sidechain in the Q3?
Hey! Love your videos I watch them religiously! I have two requests please! 1 - The bass sound for Chainsmokers - Don't Say 2 - A detailed video on how you balance your sounds, and typically the order in which you do it Thanks and keep up the great work!

"Ship Wrek - Need It" uses a similar rhythm. They're not using chords but it's an interesting sound nonetheless.
That's badass, love it.
Ship wrek like to use that technique a lot
And now they used it to make the best song the chainsmokers have ever been associated with
OHHHHHHHHH NICE!!!!!! I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THIS ONE.
Odesza - Last Goodbye!!!!! I've been listening to this song on repeat since it came out. Thank you so much for this tutorial!!!
same 😅

Recovery is an insane track, good to see it mentioned!
That was my first ever track where I heard this. I was just instant love.
@@MagnificentlyHighAlien same :)

Appreciate it!
You just earned a loyal subscriber. Loved the Ableton tutorial, hope to see more!
Hey.. I know you! 😀 Much appreciated man, thanks for watching! Keep killing it 👍
Rival Consoles uses exponential rhythms in songs like Recovery and Johannesburg!
I'm a huuuuge Rival Consoles fan that would have been another great reference. Will have to cover something inspired by him at some point!
@@SynthHackerTV Coooool, can't wait for that video!

Camo & Krooked used these type of rythm in "Overture". (Which is super unusual for Drum & Bass, but amazing)
Yeap, great track.
I’m actually so glad you adressed this! An amazing track it is!
Dammit! I was just going to write this hahahahah
This is the type of video more producers need to see!

I think he used granulator for that
Great technique tip. Love it when a wandering rhythm locks back into groove.
Stranger by Chemical Disco springs to mind.
I've been looking for a tutorial like this since I heard a similar technique in Anyma's Consciousness. THANK YOUUUU!!!!
Ableton videos are appreciated. I love the sound you got from the filtered saw voice.
This type of drop was in 2gether by mura masa, really cool vibe
I freaking love songs like these!!
I collected some songs that also use this technique hahaha
Unknown Brain - Don't Bother
Elijah Hill - Better
Allen Mock - Phantom
Mura Masa - 2gether
2 gether uses a filter lfo I think actually

its dope in "joris delacroix - aiguilhe", loved the tutorial!
Mura Masa's 2gether is another banger that has a really cool wobble
Every time I hear you say "here's the secret sauce" I know you're about to lay down some straight up wisdom. Thank u for these tutorials!
Another 💎!! Especially the breakdown about voicings. Thank you. Thank you.

Nice explanation of the technique.
The first place that I saw exponential rhythms used and explained was in some of Mr. Bill's early tutorials.
More Than You Ever Know by Sultan + Shepard has the similar kind of melody! I even heard that one before this
Amazing tune. I found this video trying to find out how Sultan + Shepard created it.
Yess i love these sound design vids. Super useful!
I KNEW THIS VIDEO WAS COMING! I'm grateful regardless!
Mr bill uses this technique constantly. It's really cool.

Great stuff. Please more of this format!

Your spittin straight fire! Great tutorial
I love you thank you this is incredible. please make a video about generating new rhythms
Yeeeee I was listening this track lately and I wonder how did they made it. Bumm perfect video suggestion. Thanks algorithm
I gotta say I'm pretty sure Rival Consoles pioneered this type of sound back in 2015 on his track Recovery. Regardless it still sounds dope!
Thanks god... I was desperately searching for this song in my library after listening to the new one from Odesza. You are right!
He definitely used that a lot, but doesnt make him pioneer...
rival consoles used the adsr loop function on his sub37 for the lead in recovery :)
What??? That sound was around for literal years with plenty of big songs before 2015...how old are you, hahaha?
Stromae's l'enfer has some thing pretty cool that sounds like that.
Love it, great work. I was just thinking this past week about the Odesza track and that sound. And, definitely, more Ableton is always welcome.
Mura Masa's new track ''2gether'' does a variation of this too
Nice vid, never thought of printing midi to a new track.
I remember I’ve heard a similar effect in one of the 70ies or 80ies disco songs. Just don’t remember anymore if it was Boney M or Eruption, or a similar band who did this during their era
2:29 IF YOU DON'T WANNA SEE ME
Sorry, had to get that out of my chest. That song will live forever in my brain.
YES PLEASEE!! keep the videos coming lml
This sound can also be heard in the beginning of the song “Afterburner” by Essenger. Definitely check that one out! :)
Amazing tutorial for actual sound effects!
How to produce such exponential rythm in FL studio ? Can't find a video that explains this
Your tuto is great, thank you so much ! I am not using ableton so i have to find an arpeggiator VST which is able to do that too ..
More Ableton based sound design tutorials would be great!
i swear you have the best videos on youtube
Such a refreshing video bro, well done!
love the ableton based sound design vidos keep 'em coming!
Great vid Tom. Some really interesting new things to try. Cheers

Sweet. I really liked this synth when I first heard it in their release.
Time by Snavs. Same thing. All the way back from 2016! Sounds amazing still
Subbed recently. Instantly my favorite production channel. Thanks dude. Bravo.
Yesssss!! More ableston based sound design pleasee. I loved this video, so many cool ideas
"Looming" by Rival Consoles. he's used this technique a bunch, going back to 2015. he was the first producer i heard do it
For sure. Hopefully will get a vid out covering his work at some point, one of my favs!
Great video as always! I'd also love to see a recreation of the pad that comes at 0:46 in Flume - Dreamtime, it's a very simple sound but it has a unique warmness that makes it very special
Great video man!! Love odesza
I think one of the more famous examples I’ve heard is in Deorro’s Five Hours.
This technique is all over Rival Consoles 2020 album Articulation. Check “Vibrations of a String”. Thanks for the video man 🥰
Woaa this is really interesting.
Could you Please make more about Abelton Videos
Very easy to follow and well put together tutorial
Really creative solutions, well done and thank you
Thank you so much! Another song would be Recovery by Rival Consoles.
Raise your weapon Madeon remix uses this technique at around 2:15. Great tutorial by the way👍
Rival Consoles - Recovery is one that I really feel was the first to utilize exponential rhythms
Thanks for the discovery, didn't know this one of theirs.
When the world thought he was gone, he came back with another fire video
Great video. Keep them coming!
You can also do this by putting LFO 1 on the filter, and automating the speed of the LFO. I find it a lot faster
your videos literally make my day!! thank you for everything you do!
Thanks so much!
reaaaaal good stuff bro
you might like “it ain’t right - xyz”, they use a slight pitch bend at the beginning of each chord too
Great video!
Songs that use it are
-Bang Bang by sevek
-Hesitate by Picco
-Deep youth by nevertheless
Hey Tom, would you happen to know how to create that same type of arpeggiating effect in Logic? Thanks, awesome video as always
Thank you for covering this🔥🔥🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Stimming has been using this for quite a while
Rival Consoles - 1 Chord gives me a similar vibe !
TRNDSTTR (Lucian Remix) had me fall in kove with this type of sound back in the day

Can this arpeggiator trick be done in Logic with the free cycle and also printing to midi ?
Yeeah Great!
L'enfer by Stromae uses this kind of effect.
Thks for your videos
Could you please make this video with external vsts for those of us that don't use abelton. Cheers
Great tutorial as always, mate! Love your content and have been watching for years. Thanks for all that you do for aspiring producers.
Yes! please more ableton-based tutorials!
