    This is some good advice. Another tip I’d add: if you’re sampling vinyl and CDs is go digging in charity / thrift stores in more multicultural areas of your city. There’s nothing better than striking gold on someone’s grandmas entire collection of Indian / Thai / Korean vinyl 👀

      @@hapexzm brother. The amount of cassettes of stuff barely anyones heard. even in my own culture lineage i never known would exist. My parents pull out old Arabic cassettes with PHENOMINAL singers!! Im like "ma whos this?' Shes lik "oh its our neighbor from the village she died in the 80s before she got chance to be famous" im like WHAT?
      Sounds better than many pop artists. I think because in america we focus on quality gear and HQ recording, over in the villages all they had was Brute Practice.

      @@SunAndMirror totally. I also think that’s why a lot of drummers in the 60s were so technically like “jazz elite” - because prob the only entertainment they had in their apartment was sticks and a practice pad hah.
      And yea, I got a bunch of old Turkish home recorded reel to reels in London. I’ll never know the name of the songs or artists but there’s some crazy heat on there!

      Groove, vibe and overall quality can be accomplished with just simple chopping and some pitch shift here and there. I am that boomer who does it the oldskool way and it makes me happy when all the stuff clicks together

    This was by far, the most comprehensive, helpful, and creative Sampling Techniques video I've ever seen. I've been searching for a video like this for a while and most time the techniques are either WAY to basic (such as simply chopping, or pitching a sample), or WAY to complicated, and they assume the viewer is a top notch producer/audio engineer.
    This was the best of all worlds, as it was showed the basic tactics for beat hobbyists like myself, but also thoroughly explained the more difficult techniques that I want to start exploring, as I feel I've moved into intermediate levels of sampling techniques. All in all, thank you for such a great video. You've got a subscriber out of me and I will continue to follow your content.

      TBH as a guy who uses a lot of midi in his plunderphonics I still feel like the tracks that I only use samples on both are harder to make and also are more rewarding to make for me. There is something insane in the best way about making something that is solely from other music, rather than me realizing "oh well I don't really have this type of instrument or progression sampled or something close to this, I'll just make it myself", for me its almost like giving up on doing a DJ Shadow thing, because I don't have the collection he has, but I respect how it could be seen as more "musical".

    Track Lib looks great, Being able to play around with the samples is cool. The automatic clearance is what you want, but the whole sharing reveue forever thing is a bit extreme. Should just be a one off payment. I love sampling but I hate paying to play......lol. Hey, do you still need to clear the samples if you comleptely mangle them to the point of unrecognizability. At a certain point the sound source becomes irrelevant, like when you used the resonator effect, it basically became a new sound. In that case Would Tracklib even know if you used their sample without clearing?

    How would you go about sampling say a specific line from a film or part of a specific song or speech? Just find the audio and chop it up somehow? (I'm more of a beginner)

    • @WillHatton
      @WillHatton  3 місяці тому +1

      I actually love sampling monologues from movies! I probably do this more than musical samples.
      Yeah, find the sample you like, if it's noisey (if there are cars going by or other music playing) you probably want to clean it up as best as you can using a site like lalal.ai or something similar if you don't want to pay) And then I try to chop up my movie sample so it's at least timely with the music, I think of it like a rap vocal, there's some spoken word, a space for music, some more spoken word. You still want to let the music breathe!

    I've been sampling for over 20 years. This is a good video. But as an old timer I think you missed something fundamental. I grew up sampling from vinyl, tape, CD, radio and in the field using classic samplers like the MPC, and the Akai S200, using an Atari. This brings me onto the best part of sampling ... crate digging. Digging through boxes of vinyl wherever I could find them. And then getting home and sampling from them. Working within the sampling time limitations of an SP1200 is the reason why I use an SP1200. I've never used Tracklib. It doesn't appeal to me. I'm from a different era. Hardware and vinyl is a large part of sampling.
