Uncle Bob is what we call him here in Michigan where he resides. Ive seen him and the great Silver Bullet Band numerous times. So good live. My daughter now lives in CA and got us tickets to see him out in L.A. It was a joy to see how they love him out there - when he did "Hollywood Nights", they brought the house down. Sadly Alto Reed the sax player passed on. I doubt Bob will tour again. Enjoy discovering !
I'm a guy who grew up in the late sixty's, early seventy's , had hair down to my shoulders and heard that remark alot, mostly from older folks. But as I also road a motorcycle so not many did more than make a remark one time and didn't press it. I grew up listening to Bob Seger and Ted Nugent as they were from Michigan not all that far from me and I saw them live many times. Ted more than Bob as Ted played at a local club multiple times.
Reminds me of a not uncommon T-shirt from back in the '60s. Had a drawing of Jesus on it and the caption: "Jesus Christ had long hair. Would you laugh at him?"
Even more, when you consider that Bob Seger started performing in the early 60's, and the first release of "Turn the Page" was on his 1973 album "Back in '72". By the time he wrote this, he'd been hearing that sort of commentary for nearly ten years, and the Viet Nam War had not yet ended.
Bob Seger is a great rock singer, songwriter & musician known for his raspy powerful voice. He wrote & recorded songs that dealt with love, women & blue-collar themes. "Turn The Page" is my favorite song by him. But he has so many great songs especially in the 70's-80's such as "Mainstreet", "Still The Same", "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", "Hollywood Nights", "Against The Wind", "You'll Accomp'ny Me", "Shame On The Moon", "Roll Me Away", "Like A Rock", "Shakedown", "We've Got Tonight", "Old Time Rock & Roll" etc.
Hey neighbor! I saw Bob in Knoxville Tn back in the 70’s. When they started this song, the lights was out, totally dark. Well all of a sudden the saxophone sounded out, and the spotlight hit him standing high up on top of several speakers! The concert was out of this world! It’s still one of my top concerts ever!😉🥰🤠! Ronnie East, Tennessee
Otay, this is a very nicely done video collage of the tune, from the live bullet album, which from front to back is nothing but perfection. Only Bob knew the 16track machine was in play for the show, until he spat it out when they first started, band went, wholly sheepdip! No screwing up guys! 🙂
Bob ha a great catalog. Please do more. “Night Moves” is a great one to start. “Roll Me Away” and “Her Strut” are my favorites. He is a great singer songwriter. I have seen him in concert and he puts on a great show. Listen to anything off his “. Live Bullet” album. Love your reactions. 9:20
Definately a jab at the "long haired hippy musicians ". 74 years old and still have long hair! If I cut it my grandchildren wouldn't recognize me. Red love the reaction as always! You can't go wrong with Bob.
In some ways I always felt this was kind of my theme song. I'm 60 now, I have lived in two countries, six states and thirty four towns. Many, many times I have moved, turned the page and started over. Always enjoy your reactions, you never fail to bring a smile to my face.
When I left the USMC in 1974, I made a few vows about my future. One was to not cut my hair. It is to the middle of my back, now, along with a full beard.. The comment about a "woman or a man" was mostly made by guys who were insecure about themselves. Never heard that comment from a female. Quite the opposite. Bob wrote this song in a motel room, on tour. That is how he feels it and expresses so much. It is his story. Great review. You get it. Thank you!
Red , take yourself back to a time when Bob wrote this . The "Is That a Woman or a Man" line would be something a rock & roll musician on the road somewhere in the mid-west or the south in the late 60's , early 70's WOULD hear just walking into a diner or wherever just to grab a meal. Bob writes from the real. That's why he's such an admired rocker & song writer.
Amen, same... buddy of mine lived in Austin, TX in the 80s and got to see SRV in that environment when he was "Jimmys little brother Stevie..." what a time...
I think it's a reference to the feeling you can sometimes get when you walk into a place, like everyone's looking, everyone's judging, you're new, you're not from round here.
He is a master and I love his voice you have to do Katmandu it is so good 💯💯💯💯Red please be careful and have a good trip you are missed already. I hope the weather holds out for you ❤❤#redheadedneighbor #bestreactor #redsarmy #beautifulfuncountrygirl #heartofgoldwithmetalinhersoul #38K#
I enjoyed your reaction to this one Red. I'm pleased that you plan on listening to more of him in the near future. Whichever song of his you pick it'll be good. Guaranteed!
Seger wrote it in 1972 while touring with Teegarden & Van Winkle. Drummer David Teegarden (of Teegarden & Van Winkle and later the Silver Bullet Band) recalls: We had been playing somewhere in the Midwest, or the northern reaches, on our way to North or South Dakota. [Guitarist] Mike Bruce was with us. We'd been traveling all night from the Detroit area to make this gig, driving in this blinding snowstorm. It was probably 3 in the morning. Mike decided it was time to get gas. He was slowing down to exit the interstate and spied a truck stop. We all had very long hair back then - it was the hippie era - but Skip, Mike and Bob had all stuffed their hair up in their hats. You had to be careful out on the road like that, because you'd get ostracized. When I walked in, there was this gauntlet of truckers making comments - "Is that a girl or man?" I was seething; those guys were laughing their asses off, a big funny joke. That next night, after we played our gig - I think it was Mitchell, S.D. - Seger says, "Hey, I've been working on this song for a bit, I've got this new line for it. He played it on acoustic guitar, and there was that line: "Oh, the same old cliches / 'Is that a woman or a man?' " It was "Turn the Page."
Him and Tom Petty wrote some of the classic rock songs I used to hang out with buddies when I was 16 just partying having my first time drinking some beer and listening to cool classics rock music and 80' s
had a buddy in high school that would respond every time we questioned what we were gonna do or even if we should do something.... "we shall". think he got it from fast times, but he made it his own! just rememberin'.
One of the best songwriters! You FEEL the hours boredom and loneliness leading up to the adrenaline of the stage. Classic rock. 🤘🏼👩🏻🤘🏼 But he broke my heart way back, when he cut his hair. 💔🤣
Yes, hippie jab. Being from Detroit, Bob is second only to God here. Yes, he wrote it. Recorded live at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1975, the video was made later.
Bob is such a brilliant songwriter and storyteller, and yep, totally a “long haired freaky people need not apply!” dig... like in the song "Signs". Similar message in "Turn the Page" as The Professor writes about in the Rush track "Limelight"... just to bring things around to our favorite Canadian Trio :)
39K RED I AM, SO PROUD OF YOU 100 K 2026 YOU CAN DO IT I BELIEVE IN YOU ❤❤❤❤#redheadedneighbor #bestreactor #redsarmy #beautifulfuncountrygirl #heartofgoldwithmetalinhersoul #39K
Hey neighbor, this song is from his live album called Live Bullet. It is an amazing live album. You should also check out Traveling Man/Beautiful Loser from the same album. It’s two separate songs, but they kind of run together. When you hear it on the radio, they usually play them together also.
Roll Me Away was the closing song from a very emotional movie called Mask with Cher , it took me months to buy the CD on American import . Most emotional ending of any film ive seen .
Let's see, my favorite Bob Seger song? That would be the one I am listening to at the time. Just put all his songs in a hat and pick one out, you can't go wrong.
Please listen to Bob Seger, “Get Out of Denver”. The live version from the Live Bullet album is the best. FYI when you listen to it for the first time, you should have the lyrics in front of you. It’s a fast paced hard rock song, one of my favorites.
Great reaction! This is one of just a few great songs that capture the high and low of being a performer. You could do a long reaction with this, Jackson Brown's The Loadout/Stay, AC/DC's It's A Long Way To the Top, and The Warning's Hell You Call A Dream. There are probably more, but these four are at the top of my list.
Yes, you are right; all props to Metallica for covering it, but this is Bob's song and the sense of "majesty" that you get from his live performance is unequaled.
Great reaction as always! 👍👍 if you ever want to listen to a song that will get your blood pumping and feet moving.. try Ram Jam “Black Betty “.. thanks, take care 💕
I'm turning my page. 😂 Which state is good to move to with no bitter cold n not too hot! 😂 Afraid this area leaves a bit of boring same, same. Working on releasing my strange 2020 Independence Day encounter while in Delaware. Humm no Joe fan either FYI 😂
In Michigan here...anything Seger does is fire...thanks
Absolutely! Thank you Michigan, and especially Detroit for all the talented musicians we were lucky enough to grow up with.
That’s why Seger is in the HOF.
He was one of those rare performers that sounded better live than in the studio. Growing up in Michigan I saw him a half dozen times.
Bob is the real deal. Many, many great songs of his for you to hear. Thanks for sharing this one!
"Roll me Away" is another great tune from Bob!
Yes Roll Me Away is awesome 😊
They gave us hell for our long hair back then.
My older brother had a friend with long red hair and they both finished a lot of a fights.
"Live Bullet" at Cobo Hall was a fantastic Live Album performance! "Jody Girl" will make you weep.
This saxophone always gives me goosebumps.
Bob Segar was what Bruce Springsteen wished he could have been. Masterful song writer and a great performer.
That line just sums up a guy with long hair having to endure comments from guys who didn’t believe guys should have long hair.
Reminds me of a not uncommon T-shirt from back in the '60s. Had a drawing of Jesus on it and the caption: "Jesus Christ had long hair. Would you laugh at him?"
Easy Rider says hey!😊🎉❤
Song was written in the early '70s and people would mock long haired 'hippies' as Seger cited in the song.
Same issue now w dudes who wear nail polish.
Bob Segar toured for 20 ++ years before "making it big". A 20 year "overnight success".....
You'll Accomp'ny Me, Against The Wind
MR. SEGER =LIVING LEGEND

RIP Alto Reed.
I used to karaoke this song when I was over-served at the local hang out. It is still one of my favorites.
Metallica covered it but Seger’s version is the best!🎸🤘
Agreed!

One of my all time favorite songs from my youth. Bob is a legend as a long haired teen I heard that line many times. Great reaction thank you.
I grew up with Bob, Jim and Cat. Love Bob so much. Please continue doing more of The Silver Bullet Band!!
A living Legend and incredible Artist, with the music to match. One of my favorite concerts over the years has been seeing Seger several times ✌
What a definition of self awareness:
There I am up on the stage again
There I am playing star again
And yes he wrote it. Master songwriter.

Bob Seger has a way of pulling you into the song and make you feel it.
I think he's so underated song writers. To me he's in the top 5 song writers and his voice is amazing
Red , take yourself back to a time when Bob wrote this . You may have heard it before...but have you really felt it ? You seem to know the difference. Thanks for sharing ❤
I wish I could have seen Bob in his prime in a bar. Just him and his guitar and me with a glass of bourbon. ❤️
Amen, same... buddy of mine lived in Austin, TX in the 80s and got to see SRV in that environment when he was "Jimmys little brother Stevie..." what a time...
Bob is simply the best. And you're not bad either red. Roll me away is a great song.
Yes it is, my future father-in-law chased me around in his kitchen in 1972 with a scissors because my hair was past my shoulders! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think it's a reference to the feeling you can sometimes get when you walk into a place, like everyone's looking, everyone's judging, you're new, you're not from round here.
His music is absolutely captivating
He is a master and I love his voice you have to do Katmandu it is so good 💯💯💯💯Red please be careful and have a good trip you are missed already. I hope the weather holds out for you ❤❤#redheadedneighbor #bestreactor #redsarmy #beautifulfuncountrygirl #heartofgoldwithmetalinhersoul #38K#
Psycho
A "long hared musician" jab for sure.
Great reaction, Red! Seger was a rock and roll legend.
All of his work is just this good. You have a lot to discover.
I enjoyed your reaction to this one Red. I'm pleased that you plan on listening to more of him in the near future. Whichever song of his you pick it'll be good. Guaranteed!
Great reaction. Listen to Against The Wind, you'll love it.
🙂🙂🙂🙂 Love listening to Bob love love love listening to Bob

God I love this hippie jabbing song! ❤
Always here for some Seger #Renagades
Bob segar is another great singer , he has alot of awesome songs . Anyways your reaction was awesome you need to listen to old time rockin roll ,
"We've got tonite" is another option. Covered by Kenny Rodgers and Dolly, I think.
"Night Moves" and "Roll Me Away" need to be your next Bob reactions.
Excellent reaction!! Bob Seger's catalog is legendary. Check out the song "Night Moves" next....
Like I said before Bob has many ballads and could really story tell
This is great, i was at this concert, such a great time to be alive!
Him and Tom Petty wrote some of the classic rock songs I used to hang out with buddies when I was 16 just partying having my first time drinking some beer and listening to cool classics rock music and 80' s
There are many more 10/10 Bob Seger songs to be heard.
Fun fact, Bob has 7 Harley Davidsons called Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday,Saturday,Sunday.
Yes, the "is that a woman or a man" is a long haired hippy thing. Most rockers in the 70's and 80's had longer than normal hair.
Alto Reed on the Sax - what a great featured performance.
had a buddy in high school that would respond every time we questioned what we were gonna do or even if we should do something.... "we shall". think he got it from fast times, but he made it his own! just rememberin'.
One of the best songwriters!
You FEEL the hours boredom and loneliness leading up to the adrenaline of the stage. Classic rock. 🤘🏼👩🏻🤘🏼
But he broke my heart way back, when he cut his hair.
💔🤣
Travelin Man/ Beautiful Loser from the same concert. Release as Live Bullet. I list them both because one song segues into the other,
Total hippie jab. 😂 Love you. ❤️
One of the greatest American storytellers
Excellent song!!❤
Yes, when young (as shown in a few of the photos) Seger had shoulder length hair.
I had very long hair in the 70s, and can state emphatically, it's a hippie jab. Started growing it again 5 years ago.
The Man from Detroit
Yes, hippie jab. Being from Detroit, Bob is second only to God here. Yes, he wrote it. Recorded live at Cobo Hall in Detroit in 1975, the video was made later.

Roll Me Away is 🔥
Old guys in the 70's could not stand LONG HAIR on a MAN!!! Times have changed
Listen to NIGHT MOVES the lyric version Bob wrote most of his music.

Woow another banger Red ☀️ ❤❤

I've always thought of this song as a touring musician's lament, in the mannere of a classical lament.
I wonder why the ending was shortened on this version?
Check out Bob's Roll Me Away. Great song!
Yes iys a hippie hab.. ive never heard ot said like that ....learn something new even at 73yrs yoing...
Great reaction! This is one of just a few great songs that capture the high and low of being a performer. 1968 YES LONG HAIR
My father still says it about long hair and earrings.
Definitely a hippy jab 😂
Love to hear a sax played well.
Thumbs up 👍
This song is almost as beautiful as you ...
If you've heard one Seger song, you've heard them all. Totally one dimensional
🎶🤩
Great reaction as always! 👍👍 if you ever want to listen to a song that will get your blood pumping and feet moving.. try Ram Jam “Black Betty “.. thanks, take care 💕

Yes, the woman/ man line has a different meaning than it would today. It's just about the long hair ( I.M. O.)
