One of my favorite lines ever. Together with Springsteen's "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true or is it something worse?" And Kristofferson "I ain't saying I beat the devil... But I drank his beer for nothing.. Then I stole his song."
that line n this tune struck 9yr old ears with a chord of truth so clearly intuitive it rang a gong in my feels...knew going against gusts would be my lesson to learn, not be taught
I've said this many times the last few years. I heard Seger many times when I was a teen and thought it was good and sounded like serious stuff. Man it hits so much deeper now at 47.
@USAFcombatvet you’ve got that right. I saw him twice live. Once in the late 1980’s and another in the early 90’s. Both awesome shows with people of all ages attending.
If you listen to the lyrics, it's a journey through life. I can relate. My love was Sandi. She made many promises. It was me and her against the world!.. she screwed up horribly, hurt me deeply. I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then!... Found myself alone, surrounded by strangers I thought were my friend's... Partying like a freaking rock star, buckets of alcohol, mountains of cocaine and other things. Not a care in the world! Then you wake up one day, and need to settle down because the party can't keep going.... But you always find yourself reelecting....
The pastor during last Sunday morning’s service said: “you are either about to go into a battle, you are in a battle, or you just came they a battle much of your life” How true And as jayteegamble says here, it takes growth and maturity to understand this.
I am 50 years old and I am Italian. Bob was the first "foreign" singer I listened to when I was 8 years old. His voice, his lyrics, his music... Everything is perfect and touching. My only regret is that I never saw him on stage live
Every Saturday night when I was a kid my Uncle would have a party in his garage he had turned into a full-on bar. Us kids would be put to bed early and this was one of the songs I could hear my uncles and aunts singing at the top of their lungs. Music is definitely more than the words and very individual to us all. Edit: Bunch of Newfies out on the West Coast
@@atsu6165 I and my wife went to a Kinks concert in San Jose, California. near the end of the concert someone came out and told the crowd to hold onto the Kinks ticket stub. it was good for FREE admission to the upcoming Bob Seger Concert at the same venue. Totally agree with you about music being personal. My older brother had this album and I remember playing it over and over growing up in Prince Rupert BC. Still remember the cover clear as if it was yesterday and I haven't seen it for over 30 years. Stay safe, best wishes from Van BC, Canada.
The older I get the more I come to realize that the wind represents change and time. Not just a lyric you hear but one you feel and can truly relate to.
Bob Seger has some great songs. The first time I heard Bob Seger was on the radio with my headphones one night. the song was "Mainstreet" in 1976 I think and to this day it's still my favorite Seger song. Thats how we learned about new songs and bands back then. Through radio and friends and borrowing albums from each other. There's something magical about being a teenager and music at that age. Still love music but that time in life and music go together so well. Bob Seger made some great music. listen to: "Still the same" and "Shame on the moon"
Bob Seager is one of the greatest, most heartfelt, and deep rock n roll poets/singers/musicians/geniuses EVER !! There will never be another Bob Seager.
Chicago - You're The Inspiration // Wishing You Were Here // Baby What A Big Surprise // Hard To Say I'm Sorry//Hard Habit To Break// Look Away Bob Seger - Still The Same // Down On Main Street // We've Got Tonight
Agree, one of my favorites is Night Moves by Seger. It was featured in the film American Pop along with Jefferson Airplanes Somebody to Love. American Pop came out in 1981 an adult animated musical drama film directed by Ralph Bakshi. If you haven't seen it there are 3 trailers here on UA-cam definitely worth checking out.
I don't know much Seger beyond the hits, but this is one of my favorite songs by anybody. At least a few times every year, I'll specifically look it up and just sit there in a trance listening to it.
Brad I agree with you 100%. BTW I lived in San Fran when Rodney King went down. I was 28? I went there and spent hours there watching stuff. I didnt hurt anyone or anything but I wanted to be there and watch.
Thank you. My favourite song by Bob Seger. Like so many others besides myself I've lived this song. This song is a song of what it means to lose everything including your lady. She promised it would never end. It did and after that you just fall apart. As you get older you begin to think and feel differently. Enjoy it while you can people!!!!
As Mellencamp wrote, "Oh yeah, life goes on...after the thrill of living is gone." You lose that thrill for life you have when your young. Things are different, you see and feel different. But you never forget how you felt when you were young.
*YOU'RE KILLING ME!!!!!* At age 56 feeling the sun in the western part of my life now this song never fails to bring a tear to my eye, hell it makes me cry period. A few of the lines in the song just tear my heart out. Just the thought of loves and friends of the past and how I didn't treasure them enough at the time. The line I found my self further and further from my home always crushes me. I was born and raised in Rhode Island and still love it and consider it my home, since I left in my 20's I found myself moving further and further away and have now been stuck in Florida for the past 25-30 years, absolutely hating it. Such a good song but I never dare to listen to it because of how much it depresses me. Which really sucks because of my love for Bob Seger and his music. I'd love to hear you two do...... Seger was good friends with Don Henley and Glen Frey of the Eagles. He played them this song before it was released to get their thoughts on it. They loved it, but Bob told them he didn't like the line, "I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then", because he felt it wasn't grammatically correct. They said, "Are you crazy?!? That's the best line in the song!"
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends. Great line. I always picture someone going back to where they grew up and meeting with old friends and realizing you have nothing in common with these people anymore.
Running against the wind is analogy for the struggles of life and the song starts off with him being young and getting older by the end of it. While he is older now he is still running against the wind (life). Struggles are different when we are younger vs. when we are older but they are always there. Love this song, Bob Seger is easily my favorite singer/song writer/musician.
Wonderful. Big emotions for me. First heard the song from The Highwaymen. The band with Kristofferson, Cash, Jennings and Nelson. Love it. Oh man, nostalgia.
Great reaction as always. Another good one with this same kind of vibe is "Roll Me Away". Of course, just about anything from Bob Seger is top shelf. Really enjoy your channel.
You can't go wrong with any of his songs. One of the great story tellers of rock. Down on mainstreet is one of his mainstream songs like this one but still a great story like all of them
Brad is right about America, it was made of adventurers, settlers, and pioneers, who went against the wind, and they were the type of people who made our country, the ones willing to take a chance and leave everything to come to a new world, against the wind.
When I first saw his concert on his tour for "Ramblin Gamblin Man" I never dreamed he'd have such a long successful career ahead of himself. His Late sixties concert was fantastic. I was about 16. Rambin Gamblin man is still my favorite song of his. They're all great however.

1ST HEARD BOB, 'RAMBLING GAMBLING MAN' LATE 60'S, MENTIONED I WAS LUCKY ENUFF TO MEET HIM VERY BRIEFLY IN MICHIGAN IN '02 .. THEN IN CAME KID ROCK, THEN EMINEM .. ALL HAD PLACES IN THIS SMALL TOWN ... GOODRICH MI.
At 48, I feel like I’ve lived the part about friends and running and then seeking shelter. Always liked this song, but I guess I had to go through some stuff to really appreciate it. Great video as always! 👍🏼
I think it's fascinating that both Brad and Lex both understand based on what they're hearing and how they both don't understand what they're hearing based on their age or gender. They both get but understand it differently. Plus I know I'm a 60 year old white guy but she is adorable.
This was Seger's biggest album, and one of his most popular singles. Night Moves (and Live Bullet, recorded in Downtown Detroit) had been popular, but Against the Wind (the album) put him on the national stage. Before then (and largely since) he's had some popularity nationally, but is huge in Southeast Michigan where he comes from.
I absolutely adore this song! I also enjoy the version performed by The Highwaymen. A country music super group comprised of Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings. And last, but certainly not least, Johnny Cash.
The beauty of this song and many great ones is that you can take it for what it means to you! Doesn't have to be the same for everyone. Its self interpretation.
I grew up listening to my older brothers' Bob Seger albums. As a kid sitting next the floor-model stereo... and headphones like yours' on my little head (I must have looked like a bobblehead doll lol). Seger is a brilliant song writer and his voice is amazing. I saw him live approx 7 years ago and he still "had it". Great reaction video. I really enjoyed the Pink Floyd reactions, especially :)
This isn't about going against the grain, its about the struggles of fighting against the wind, that life can be hard as if the wind is in your face instead of from your back.
I have heard this song over and over since the time it was released. Never gave it a second thought, till you guys opted to break it down a bit. Gives one cause to think a bit.

This is one of those songs that is wonderful to hear when you're young and going through it. It hits. Then, when you're older, it hits different. Bob Segar is the king of putting that sentiment to music.
I remember, I think it was 1980 or so, I was going to go to this concert in Cleveland Ohio, and he had to cancel the concert to go for emergency throat surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. I think it was for throat cancer. Glad he made a full recovery!
Bob Seger is the master storyteller. I honestly don't know if he writes his own music but he sure has had an impact on me. Have always loved him. Good reaction. ,,

"Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then." What a great line and so true.

It truly is a great line. Funny because you have to think about it for a second to get it since it’s a double negative
The greatest lament to lost innocence in rock and roll!
When your young you dont really hear/understand the message Bob's music is giving you....but as you grow older and older it really hits home
Yes I totally agree with you, it really has more meaning as you get older in life.
@@frankrizzo4460 and how was Bob when he wrote the song? 😉

I like it! "A man knows when to go against the wind; a boy goes against the wind just because it's windy"

Bob did a nice job of integrating other singers into his songs. You can clearly hear the harmonies of The Eagles, Glenn Fry on this one
Bob did quite a bit to start Glen Fry's career
I knew that Bob was a big part of the Eagles success, but I didn’t know that Glenn did back up vocals on this. Cool.
It was Glenn Fry who suggested layering the acoustic guitar under the piano solo.
Actually Glenn Frey and Bob Seger did the back up vocals on this song.
