  • An in-depth instructional video showing how I modified the rear factory seat in my 2015 RAM 3500 Tradesman to fold down, whereas from the factory, the rear seat back is fixed and not allowed to fold, exposing extra storage behind, or a secret hiding place!

    Awesome mod for the Ram. I appreciate you taking the time to show me how to fix this aggravating problem without putting MDF or a 1 / 4 under the back seat!

    I have a 2010 Ram 2500 SLT and my seats are exactly like yours. We're fortunate: owners of 60/40 seats have to remove 8 bolts! I had to use a breaker bar (apparently I'm not as macho as you) but the bolts were easy to access. I didn't completely remove the bolts. Only loosened them enough to get the seat-back hooks to clear. The mod worked perfectly. Thank you Rusty for taking the time to make this video. God bless!

    Thanks Rusty. I have a 2018 Ram 3500 and followed your advice and modified my back seat by cutting off each hook even with the white plastic. I put a damp towel on the seat back and used my right angle grinder with a cut off wheel, no fire danger, no metal shavings where i didn't want them. It took only a couple minutes on each side to make the cut and bevel the leading edge. I used black electricians tape and wrapped the end of the white plastic twice to secure it to the metal hook. This was necessary because the plastic can now slip over the edge and hang up the seat back. I did not have to cut off any more of the hooks, the seat back locked perfectly when i brought the seat up to 45 degrees and released just as easy doing it all in reverse. Now i have this great place to hide things that sometimes need to be hidden. Its unlikely that anyone who has not read this posting would know how to release the back.

    I have seen other similar videos but no one, absolutely no one explained in the level of detail that you did. This is the best video I have seen and I will use your video this weekend to finally solve the mysteries that I have. Leaking air vent and 3rd brake light leaking. Gotta change out that carpet underneath the seat not because it stinks. I scrubbed the fabric off and it still stinks.

      @@texmorgan9703 Hey Rusty, man it worked. My hooks were metal so I took a Sawzall and cut 1 inch off. 3/4 wasn’t enough when I tested it so I marked it during the test to cut just enough and have plenty of material left to have to sturdy hook. I have the Big Horn package that’s problem why. Cab vents were okay so I am going to test the leak with a water hose to see where the leak is and fix it. I’ve already silicone the heck out of my 3rd brake light. I will test it tomorrow. Thanks for all your help!!!

      The most frustrating part of my truck is the stupid backseat. I did this mod as soon as I got the truck from seeing a different video yrs ago. I have a 2014 Dodge ram 1500 sport. I made flip down covers so that the dog has a flat area to sit with the back seat up covering the storage area. I wish I had the infloor storage. I wanna root around and see if I can fabricate it but that's pretty heavy fabrication since I'll be cutting into the floor. I need to check out what's underneath there and see if anything is movable if it's in the way. otherwise I'm pretty sure they would have put them in other models.. Storage should always be priority in a pickup truck, I would assume but not for everyone I guess these days. Watching this video makes me love my cordless impact driver. So many bolts. Plus seat belt to be aware of.

    The spacers work just fine, have them on my Ram and my fox Acoustics box came with the spacers. The factory bolts were still plenty long enough. Why cut on your truck seat when you don’t have too? It’s perfectly safe and It hits awesome with two Type R 12’s and all of my amps were able to be installed on the back wall and gives easy access to them.

    • @ixionn563
      @ixionn563 4 роки тому +1

      I'm sure either works fine, but for people without a full system in their truck I can see this being the more economical solution. Worst case you have to replace a couple brackets which shouldn't cost too much, but as long as you cut them right I don't see it being an issue. Those Fox Acoustics boxes are real sweet though, been looking at one for awhile for my two Kicker 12s, 1.5 cu feet air space in an underseat box is impressive.

    Once you get the seats unbolted and off the hooks you can bolt them back in with the back in the down position then just keep trimming the hooks until the seat goes all the way back and locks in. Then since everything is already bolted back in your done. On my 09 1500 quad cab i had to trim all the way past the white piece and a Dremel tool helps you round it off nicely to it pops back smoother. I did enough to where it needs some force to pop back and forth but i would rather it not come forward unless i really want it to.

    Putting a seat lift is totally reversible. They supply u with new quality bolts that r longer. Now this is still a good idea if u prefer it but the safety of the backseats is just as good as factory with the lift kit. Plus it's reversible with no grinding and fire hazard required.

    Thanks for the info! I sense a new ham radio location in my truck's future. One question, is the seatback still secured in its upright position when the bottom is folded completely up? Or will it want to fold down? I am hoping that the only time the seatback folds down is when the bottom is at that 45-degree angle.

    • @texmorgan9703
      @texmorgan9703  3 роки тому +1

      Hey there, thanks for watching! If you take your time, and don’t shave TOO much off, you’ll end up with a finished product that will easily do both, fold forward or lock upright. Even if you take a little too much off, it’ll still lock upright, it’ll just be a little tricky to get the locks back in their groove to lock. It’ll make more sense when you get in there. But, to answer your question, yes it will lock in the upright position as well as fold down.

      James Oberlin , while unfortunately I can't provide personal pictures of rifle storage, I can give you some links to examples of my original plan. I currently use the new space as storage room for misc items, like a tool bag, muck boots, rain gear, a jump-start pack etc. I've found that I typically have little passengers in the backseat and, while the space behind would be great for hiding weapons, in my case, they would not be readily accessible unless I hurl my children from their seats.
      The following links are some EXAMPLES of mounting options for both pistols & rifles. I AM NOT endorsing any of these products as I have no experience with any of them. Please do your own research.

    Very smart idea!
    But, I was thinking about the other mods you mentioned being on UA-cam. Something about adding 3/4" spacers under the rear seat footing/mount point? I haven't seen any of those, yet. BUT after watching your video here, wouldn't it have been easier to just get a 3/4" - 1" longer bolt to put though those spacers/mounting points? Thus maintaining the structural integrity of the seat & mount without compromising the security of, or having to grind on the seatback. Just a thought I had while watching your video. Good job on the video, BTW.

    • @texmorgan9703
      @texmorgan9703  6 років тому

      Ted Spence, Yessir, that did cross my mind, but I personally still didn't feel that was the best option. For a number of reasons that we don't have to go into, but mainly because I've got 2 kids in carseats back there. I just didn't feel right about altering the anchor points. I'm sure longer bolts would work just fine, but I don't think they'd be any easier. I feel like knowing now what I leaned while making this video, a guy could have this mod knocked out in 20-30 minutes, without spending a penny anywhere. And that's why I believe it's the best solution. But yes, longer bolts would still work, probably just fine, if you're not carrying small children

    • @tedspence5047
      @tedspence5047 6 років тому

      I understand about the small kids safety, got it! Had of few of them critters in my life, too. I guess, I didn't clearly state my point? I wasn't disrespecting your mod, just thinking about how to improve on it, or make it a little simpler. It was a great "How To" video. Oh yeah, and nice truck!
      The idea for the bolt is to make all 3 pieces hold together as one piece of metal. 1-The mounted nut in the floor of the cab. 2-The seat footing. 3-The bolt itself. (Locks all 3 together as one, when properly torqued.)
      So, in doing this mod, what I was thinking about is the "thread length" & "grip length", being two different things. The "thread" length is what holds the bolt securely in the cab floor. The "grip" length is the distance from the threads, to the shoulder of the bolt and holds the footing to the floor.
      What is most important here (doing it either way), is that it maintains the structural integrity of the seat and safety of your kids. With that said, if someone were to go out and buy 4 of the same grade bolt as the original, with the same thread length, BUT a 3/4" longer grip bolt from Dodge, you would accomplish the same thing (securely making one piece), without grinding on the truck. That's all I was trying to think through & suggest. (BTW-I am a retired Navy 20 year aircraft structural mechanic & instructor, also worked 10 years in the civilian airline/aircraft trade.) I wasn't trying to take the wind out of your sails, just thinking how it could be done a little easier.
      Thanks for allowing me to try & re-explain my thought process on this again and have a great one.

    • @texmorgan9703
      @texmorgan9703  6 років тому

      Ted Spence, No no sir! You're not hurtin anyone's feelings here. That's what this is all about...discussion, exploration, advancement, improving and building on! By the way, thank you for your service! God bless you!
      I understood what you were getting at, I did. And you are correct. I'm theory, you'd be accomplishing the same thing, once the new, longer bolts were used. And to "each his own", but the points I would like to make here, to help someone trying to make the same decision, are as follows:
      1) If I were to alter the anchors, say by 3/4" blocks, and heaven-forbid something were to happen like an accident involving the children and they were injured, or worse. How would it look, having modified the seat, whether it had anything to do with the mod or not. Does that make sense? You smell what I'm steppin in?
      2) using my method, there are no tools, or parts to buy, assuming you have a socket set and grinder, hacksaw or file. This can be done in 20 minutes or less, with limited mechanical experience, and zero investment.
      3) Simplicity- nothing here to measure, design, fabricate. Nothing is being installed here that can potentially break, come undone, slip or fail. I like the KISS method, when possible and practical.

    • @tedspence5047
      @tedspence5047 6 років тому

      I hear ya and I smell what you're steppin' in. Better safe than sorry. (And man, I have been sorry more than a few times in my life!) I believe you're thinking a "shear force" as opposed to "tensile strength"? As long as that thread is completely down in the floor anchor, that seat ain't going nowhere! The part I didn't understand was about the MDF? That would scare the HECK out of me! Using WOOD instead of piece of flat stock/metal. Anyway, not trying to beat a dead horse here, I'll get outta here. Again, have a great day!

    • @texmorgan9703
      @texmorgan9703  6 років тому

      Same to you sir! Thanks for watching! I get exactly what you're saying. You're correct on all accounts. Like I said though, to each his own. Well I can't speak for all models, but mine will "click" when I lift the seat bottom all the way up/back, and locks in that position. I'm not sure exactly what is happening mechanically to lock into place, because all it takes to return the seat to the down position, is to simply pull the stowed seat bottom down/forward. There is a slight lifting motion in the seat as it comes forward. I should note that after the mod, I have to hold the seat back during this process to keep it from coming forward as well. Nice to have options finally! I hope this helps answer your question.

      It still does everything it did before the mod. So, if your seat locked in the up position, this mod won't change that. The rear locks will slide free of the tabs, allowing the opportunity to fold the back down, or if you don't fold it down, the locks will slide back into the tabs like normal. That is, if you take your time and don't shave too much from the locking bars, as explained in the video. I can see where that would possibly cause issues.

    Hi, On mine I found there's no need to cut or bend anything at all. I just used four 1/2" bolts to raise the seat a little bit "doesn't cause any safety concerns with integrity of the bolts".
    After raising the seat 1/2" all you have to do is find the "sweet spot" when moving the bottom seat. When moving the bottom seat the backrest will raise and lower, at the apex "when it hits its top most point before it starts going down again" give the backrest a good pull and it will come forward. This takes a little practice but you get the hang of it in no time. Then reverse to put it back in position.
    No cutting or filing needed.
    Hope this may help anyone wanting to do this mod.
