I kitbashed my first 3D model just the other day for use in Tabletop Simulator: I found a really nice set of low-poly feudal Japan models (Samurai and Ashigaru and all that), but unfortunately they didn't have any ground infantry with katanas. That said, they _did_ have a cavalry wielding a katana. So, I downloaded the models, popped them into Blender, and spent about an hour cutting vertices, adjusting angles, connecting points, and smoothing out polygons until I had a pretty decent conversion. It was only the tiniest of modifications, and the sword isn't even angled straight, but I was immensely satisfied. There's something to be said about little accomplishments building your confidence--before that model, I thought I had no chance of understanding 3D modeling. Now, I think I might have a shot at it, someday.
One weird thing about meshmixer is that it exports highly bloated stls and just re-saving the stl with another software massively reduces file size without any reduction in vertices
I recommend you get on the army painter speed paint wagon ! Do a metallic bass on armor go over that with a collar ; do a white bass pick a complimentary collars for for cloth , and be done . I've been painting up some mechs for battletech using gun metal , silver and speed paints . Fast and easy !

I love kitbashing, because you can combine the best parts of several models. But in your case, I think adding an armature in blender would be an easier solution. This way you can shape your model based on a rag doll skeleton.
This is the first time I've ever even heard of using VR to make models for 3D printing and that's just such a cool intuitive idea, now I want to waste money on a VR set up.
This is the first time ive seen a bit of medium being used, gotta see if it would work on my pimax or vive via revive since i havnt got a current oculus headset (got the dk2 back in 2015 but it doesnt have controllers and my razer hydras are a paint to use, bad tracking and really shaky). Thanks for this quick showcase, it looks really intuitive. Ive done some VR modeling in Anyland but its using predefined shapes that can not be easily modified beyond scaling along the axis, this looks like a similar concept but with the added bonus of import as well as modifying more finely.
@@KnarbMakes I dug around a bit early last year and couldnt find any that looked as nice and i tried some of the free ones, wasnt impressed so i went back to blender. Im by no means an expert at that either but i can get most things i need done, being able to work like you show in medium looks really interesting. Just connected up my VR hmd, installing stuff now to see if i can run it via ReVive :)
@@KnarbMakes In case anyone else is interested in trying Medium i can report that it does indeed run through ReVive, got it working on my Pimax with Vive controllers. Now to figure out how to actually cut models up and paste them back together :)
@@KnarbMakes Started poking at it but im having an issue with importing, figured out it needs to be OBJ format but whats a reasonable level for layer fill to use? What were your models at in the vid? The default 1% made the model blocky so i figured id just whack it up to 100% since it still fit within the layer volume and that crashed steamvr for me :P
Would you be willing to do a full tutorial video for those of us not familiar with Medium? How to import. Create layers. Etc? This has made me want to try VR.
So I found these files the other day before I even knew about this video. One issue I found- the head of the full body knight with the plume doesn't have it's head connected to the torso, so I had a bunch of unfixable islands to deal with.
Paint scheme for easy knights is easy as Leadbletcher or very dark iron, mixed 50 with a straight black. Drybrush one higher than than the iron colour and then MAKEUP drybrush them with an even shinier mix and vollia instant armour. Seriously give that a go.
Your doing 20x the work doing it this way. Blender literally has a pose tool since last year. You define a joint and the can repose the model as if it were a doll in your hand. It will, of course, stretch/bend/rotate the joint area in the most natural-looking way you'd expect from a pose-tool.
i tried this process on my models and couldnt make it work: no matter what i do, meshmixer reduces qualuty too much, and Instant Meshes exports an empty .obj file or just a bunch of "dots" ((
I want a bvs armoured batman - but can only find files for the armour - with no bruce wayne inside it - could youdo this to make a cool looking armoured BvS batman for 3d printing?
Awesome!! Any good recommendations for videos to get familiar with medium? I have no 3d/CAD experience but this is exactly what I want to learn how to do with stls, and it seems pretty time efficient once you get the hang of it!
For someone who has absolutely no artistic skills or abilities whatsoever, how difficult would you say this is to do if one has a VR headset and Blender?
hate to be a downer, but labeling a technique as 'free' and not mentioning that you need a $300 headset, space to use it, and possibly the amount of the parts to go from dinky notebook or tablet to gaming pc, is a little bit clickbaity
Seeing the posing in VR all the way to the finished 3D print is incredible! :)
Thanks!
You make this look so easy.
Practice enough & it will be.
Sculpting in VR is a piece of cake.

Chose to export "STL Binary Format" and the file will be normal size.

There must be similar sculpting programs for the vive platform right? Do they not support imports?

Great presentation, Knarb
Ingenious workflow Knarb - those turned out fantastic, excited to see them painted up
Im excited to see them painted up too.... now if I could just find some time :)
This is sick! I've been doing some research to do essentially the same thing, and this is perfect!!
Videos like this make me want to explore doing 3d modeling. I worry though, will GW come for you because of your use of the 'tactical rock'?
Ah, that's not a tactical rock, its a.... strategic geological formation....
gw is dead lol
It's okay; it's the skulls you need to watch out for...
Until now I just added something or brutishly carved into models in blender. Thanks for this, it inspires me a lot!

Really mind-blowing! So many possibilities!
Black armour with gold trim and cloth sections painted with red. should look pretty striking. I'm probably a bit late to the party though.
yay super cool KNarb! im looking forward to all the OPR stuff coming out

Ah ok. I ended up printing the head separately so I didn't have that issue.
How about a tan and orange colour scheme, with brass for the armour?
Brass armor would look pretty unique! Thanks Vaughan!
These look excellent 👌

Ive been learning more blender recently. All of this is possible in free software as well, without VR.
very cool, will look into this thanks.
What the heck, I didn’t even know you could do this with vr with good results.

Yeah likely a mix of Chivalrous with Crossbows mixed in for ranged weapons.
What vr are you using? 🤔 I want to do this, love the content you made a sub 😊
How much to print a set and export to the UK?

Dude thank you!
I want a bvs armoured batman - but can only find files for the armour - with no bruce wayne inside it - could youdo this to make a cool looking armoured BvS batman for 3d printing?
I would have thought so; just find a model with a suitable face that you can chop up and fit the armour.
That's great! I'll have to give it a go!! I'm sure it's harder than you make it look!
Hi I purchased your tank STL just wondering when that will be sent to me.
Which platform did you purchase it on? Should have been a download link. Shoot me an email of you're having issues.

Didn't realize adobe medium was free on oculus! I'll have to dust off my quest 2!
This is so awesome!
Thanks!
as someone who has never touched any of the programs mentioned, how long would you say it would take for me to get proficient enough to do this?
It can take some time, but you can start with the basics and work your way from there.
Play around with it!

Medium doesn't have as many tutorials, but its pretty intuitive once you get going. Blender can likely get you good mileage too!
What 3d gear did you use for this?
Great idea. Sad that he isn’t using Blender.
Great stuff.
Not sure a VR helmet is needed for this, but it's a way to get your moneys worth by using it for something like this 😉
Yeah, not necessary. can do most of this in Blender as well.
This alone might sell me on the oculus…
Very cool.
But do you really think editing in VR is better than Blender?
Now that Ive learned more Blender. No. But sculpting is still superior in VR
Very cool
This reminds me alot of desktophero
Wow, how inspiring
