  • During the 2006 NFL Thanksgiving early game between the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, Joey Harrington was returning to Ford Field to take on his old team, and to face a team and a fan base that ran him out of town. Harrington responded by putting on the game of his life, throwing three touchdown passes in a win, and even receiving admiration from Billy Joel of all people. This is the story behind Joey Harrington's iconic Thanksgiving game

    I'm a Lions fan, and I was happy for Joey. He was put into a situation where he couldn't succeed. Remember that Millen drafted him against the wishes of his new hand-picked Steve Mariucci substitute Marty "The Bar Is High" Mornhinwieg, who fancied himself a Star QB-maker extraordinaire, and thought that he could make Mike McMahon into the next Jeff Garcia. Joey was drafted into an org. that was adopting the West Coast offense at a time when the rest of the league was moving away from it, and was a far cry from Oregon's offensive scheme. The guy was brought in to be the face of the franchise, and he tried his best. It was great to see Dre Bly eat his words, and I liked Bly.

    Thanks, as a Duck. No matter his failings, Detroit used him as a scapegoat, and that is not unusual for a team, but the lowlights with the Piano Man revealed who the true losers really were. Joey was absolute entertainment at Oregon.

      @@GR-bn3xj I think he could have been great had he landed on a team willing to tailor their offense around his strengths. Unfortunately, Joey was a square peg in a round hole in Detroit. He wasn't suited for a West Coast Offense system and the Lions' coaches were too stubborn to realize this and adapt. One rule has always been true, in life and in football: Adapt or die. If you don't change things up when what you're doing isn't working, you deserve what's coming to you. As a head coach, if you don't do this, and keep failing, you're asking to be fired.

This is a team that in the past 35 years had one of the greatest RBs ever, a massively talented HoF WR, and the first franchise QB in over 50 years; and what have they got to show? The RB and WR quit rather than continue to play for the Lions, the QB got out of town as soon he was wanted elsewhere; oh, and one playoff win 30 years ago. What crocks me about the Barry Sanders era - they had Herman Moore at wide out, maybe the second most talented receiver ever to suit up for the Lions. And a group of receivers almost as good. They had a run and shoot offenses that could almost score at will, regardless of which of their so-so quarterbacks they put on the field. But the owner, Ford, only wanted to see old smash mouth football. So good-bye to the run and shoot and the scoring it produced, hello to running Barry 28 times a game. Image the career Barry Sanders would have had had he been the second option out of the backfield as the Lions continued to dump the ball to all those talented receivers they had?

      If he was drafted by a team like the Steelers or anyone who had a good O-line and plenty of depth at the skill positions it probably would’ve been a different story but what happened, happened and the only thing we learned from it was that if you’re going to draft a QB in the first round you better have a good foundation in place so that way he can thrive because if you did what the Lions did in 2002-2005 while Harrington was there which was change head coaches at the drop of a hat then how can your young QB develop if he has to learn a new system every year?

    • @cdjhyoung
      @cdjhyoung 2 роки тому +4

      I agree. Harrington really looked like he had the tools to succeed. But you need to step back and ask 'what other talent was on that Lions team?' Not much. Once again, you need to look past just the players on the Lions and examine the coaches and the play calling. And always look at the meddlesome Ford ownership team. One thing about getting drafted by the Lions - hold out for big money because it is very likely your career is going no where after you start playing in Detroit. The best you can hope for is a draft day trade.

    I'm not saying Harrington was good. He did start most of the games for a team that to this day scored the fewest points in a 16-game season in franchise history. But he did walk into Chicago and knock off the big, bad 7-0 Bears, and he did win 4 straight starts after Crappooper...I mean Culpepper, sabotaged the season by starting 1-3 to give me a least a glimmer of hope.

    This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made multiple videos about the trash talking conducted by the other Thanksgiving host, the Dallas Cowboys. It seems like the Lions were the last team that should have been trying to pull of that level of trash talking before a game.
    Bill Simmons talked about how after the Raptors traded Vince Carter he got booed every time he went back to Toronto. Simmons said it fired Carter up to play well against his former team.

    Detroit deserved to get spanked like that after you humiliate a guy who tried his best but just couldn't put it all together. About 60-70 people out of 300 million Americans can play QB in the NFL and if you are in the top 32 you are really really really good.

    Mariuscci and Millen were the problem, not Harrington. They wanted a gun slinger, not a game manager, yet Joey was a game manager. Just another case of the lions doing opposite of the rest of the league while having players that are built for the rest of the league.

    Big deal. There is a reason why they say lions qb and wings goaltender are the tuffest positions to play in detroit. It was the mm lions era with rod 0-16 marinelli as coach. Hater picks on the lions once again. And if you really want to pick on lions some more before their turkey day game do a video on the turkey day game the year before when falcons routed them leading to marinucci to get FIRED right after it. Or do a video on last season's turkey day game when lions just gave up as texans routed lions leading to matt patricia to be FIRED the next day. Lions are LOSERS...period. Find another #kn team to pick on hater. At least at the silverdome and under capt. wayne-o fontes lions had some bite on turkey day and came out fighting. Now they have been reduced to pure losers who get feasted on on turkey day at ford 'loser' field with 'ford' being an appropriate name for it. And stoney #kn case or bob gagliano even craig whelihan would have lit up the lions if put behind center that day. And joey 'blue eyes' was just another lie the lie-ons sold to their fans that he was gonna be their saviour and star. Just like they said with andre ware and charlie batch and roy and mike williams. They are nothing but liars that sell b s to a feeble and fickle fan base. Just nuke lions from the nfl landscape or send them to st.l and give detroit a new franchise. One that doesn't have the name 'ford' attached to it in any way.
