Great post. Lot of history here. Tiger Stadium, the Cotton Bowl. The Clint Longley game. And yes the St. Louis Cardinals did temporarily bump the Cowboys from the Turkey Day slate. Thank you. Awesome!!

That Lions/Raiders was probably the best game the Lions have played since they last won a title. My Dad , brother and I were there. That 1970 team was strong. Made the playoffs and lost to Dallas 5-0. Different game back then. We Lions fans haven’t had much to cheer about. Go lions!

Annual Thanksgiving Day ritual across the United States: people notice the game on the television leading to the inevitable question, "Who are the Lions playing against?"

That Clint Longley game at Dallas in 1974 against the Redskins definitely takes the cake out of all of them!

Wow ..Sign of the times with different play and rules; Greg Landry was the leading passer in the NFL in late November... Anybody see Dick Lebaeau?

No 6-legged turkey post game meal here. Tough action on even tougher playing surfaces.

Was there a Thanksgiving game in Detroit in the late 60s where it snowed? I seem to remember watching a game like that on TV when I was kid.

1969 against the Vikings. Lions lost 27-0. Snowed like crazy. I was there.

I still recall the WTF feeling watching Dallas get roasted by SF on Thanksgiving Day, 1972. It makes more sense when you remember how angry the 49ers were losing the previous two Conference Title games against the Cowboys. Motivation was not lacking after missing out on two SB's thanks to Dallas. Unfortunately for SF, they used up most of their karma here and in the first three quarters of the playoff game.

1974 Thanksgiving Game in Detroit....The Last every home game at fabled Briggs/Tiger Stadium

@GK 3725 You pointed out the 1974 Thanksgiving Day last ever home game at (formerly Briggs) Tiger Stad. After the Lions 1957 World Championship, the team continued to have very respectable seasons from 1958 to 1974. Nothing's ever seemed to be the same again for the franchise, only reaching the conf. championship game in 1991.

Must have been awesome watching a football game played in that stadium. I attended a Tigers game there once and was blown away by the sight lines.

The 1975 game didn't have Dallas playing? Strange.

when the nfl still played football. i understand the need to protect players but the league has turned their product into a joke. i watch more old nfl videos on youtube than current nfl games.
i'm so sick of the stupid rules that have made quarterbacks not even real football players anymore and all therules that dont allow defenses to play defense.
i cant watch a game where after every play you have to wait to see if there is a penalty for "taunting" or landing on the quarterback(how stupid is that?)
the modern nfl is a complete and utter joke.
