- In a 1985 NFL Thanksgiving game at the Pontiac Silverdome between the Detroit Lions and New York Jets, with the Jets trailing by 14 points midway through the fourth quarter facing a goal to go situation, Jets head coach Joe Walton, for some reason, decides to send out kicker Pat Leahy for a field goal. This is the story behind the most pathetic field goal in NFL history

In his book "I Never Played the Game," Howard Cosell refers to the 1983 Jets, and says, "The Jets' coach, Joe Walton, had taken the best group of players in the NFL and turned them into nothing. Another brilliant coaching mind."
Why was Walt Michaels fired? And why didn’t he get another head coaching gig in the NFL, a guy who takes arguably the worst team in football in 1977 and by 1982 has the Jets in back to back playoff appearances and an AFC title game. If I were another NFL club I’d be rushing to hire him. He obviously knew what he was doing and the green and white might have gotten rings had he stayed
@@russellseilhamer4552 On the plane ride back from losing the AFC title game in Miami, Michaels threw a tantrum and Leon Hess's son suddenly decided that Michaels being a drunk was unacceptable and he needed to go right then and there.
@@DolFan316 A grown man, whose job is to lead adult athletes to success, threw a child's tantrum, after losing a game???!
Holy crap! Joe Namath really did curse the jets, didn't he??
Anytime the Jets have a good thing, it collapses into agony, as if they were misfortunate, from the damn start...
NO, I dont want these condensed to 60 seconds.....hell, make them longer......EVERY video you've made has been well produced, very well researched, and incredibly entertaining....
Yea, except for the occasional gaffe
You: That’s the stupidest decision to kick a field goal ever
Matt LaFleur: Hold my beer
ua-cam.com/video/LwjetlzE6s8/v-deo.html I got you covered
I explained the whole Lafleur situation after the video. I thought 7 out of the first 10 comments would mention this. You were the only one. I dont think people realized the historical stupidity of that moment. I'm a lifelong Bucs fan (it's been mostly bad) and I feel Matt LaFleur's stupidity cheapened the Bucs victory. Maybe that's why Aaron Rodgers is causing problems, they didn't give him a chance to win that game, and it was a close game.
This game was also known for Ahmad Rashad proposing to Phylicia Ayers-Allen during the pregame show.
*I REMEMBER THAT!!! AND SHE SAID YES!!!*
Claire Huxtable was a fine piece of ebony art.
I was about to write the same thing!
Walton may not be a good coach but his bad sweater game is on point. Look at that thing. It's gloriously hideous.
Yes, but he did enjoy the free bowl of soup.
Enberg was the greatest. Merlin Olson was always annoying, but Enberg made those broadcasts top shelf. Even before we had analytics he had common sense.
I love how he low key called the Jets dumbasses for kicking the FG here.
I could understand Walton trotting out Leahy if, say, 12 minutes were left in the 4th quarter with that spread. With seven minutes left, however, you need TDs in the worst way. Definitely a dumb decision.
I haven't even watched yet but it's stupidity involving the Jest and Loins. There's no way this won't be awesome.
The 1985 Lions beat 4 playoff teams that year and were a feisty home team
Yup. 6-0 at home after this win. But they lost their last two home games (they had no shot against the Bears) and were just 1-7 on the road.
I was 13 watching this and even my 7th grade brain knew it was dumb. My dad was just shaking his head (we were all Giants fans).
In 1995, Bill Belichick had Browns Kicker Matt Stover kick a FG on the last play of the game, down 31-10. Might have even called a timeout to do it. If you can find the San Diego radio broadcasters call, it’s quite a listen! Years later he said he was doing everything he could to get Stover a chance at the Pro Bowl, which he thought he deserved. So maybe not such a bad intention in spite of the bad look.
And then Belichick would never be heard from again...
Go for it and don't make it....down two TDs and Lions start on their 10. Made FG....down two TDs and Lions start on ~25. Hell, even MISSING the FG you could make an argument is better than making the FG...down two TDs and Lions start on the 20. (I know the scrimmage vs spot of kick rules varied a bit back then but I think the 20 yard line has always stayed same for kicks inside 20)
That was a butt fumble of a decision by Walton.
At the end of the day, this is the Jets playing like the Jets. Enough said.
At least this is now the 2nd dumbest thing done by the Jets on Thanksgiving.
Same old Jets
0:56 Eric Hipple just got JACKED UP!!🤣
I had to say that.
Dam Son photo here
I can't remember the team, (maybe Buffalo) but Walton did the same logic later in his career, where the Jets down 11 midway through the 4th Q, chose to kick a FG, that still made them 8 points behind, in a time before the 2pt conversion.
Did his contract include something about total points?
Andy Reid kicked a FG on 4th and 19 with 4:52 left down 15. It was Eagles-Bears 2010. They lost by 5.
Eric Hipple... I haven't heard or thought about him in 35 years.
I don’t know how you find all of these. 🙏
I remember a dumb decision involving the Washington (They were the Redskins at the time). They went for it on 4th down in field goal range down by 9 midway through the 4th quarter. They missed it and painted themselves into a corner on a later drive in that game, still down by 9.
I don't know why but I love the old school jets logo. So classic.
Your view count is criminal for content this well done. Great job with all the older NFL content. No one else is telling stories like this.
The only thing that makes sense: coach Walton saw enough Lions film to realize that NOBODY snatches defeat from the jaws of victory like the Detroit Lions
Well, Before GB-TB last year.
Reminds me of Bill cowher in the 2004 AFC championship game in the 4th quarter down 14 and elected to kick field goal with the ball at 2 yard line
The QB getting rocked @ :52 😳😳
Enberg/Olsen DEFINITELY the silver medal crew back then!
how bout falcons vs 49ers 2015 Atlanta kicks fg down by 4 3 minutes left and at the 1 yard line
Ken O' Brain was Kurt Cousins of the I'd
1985 was a throw away season for every team but the Bears....no one was beating them
That team was more feared by any in league history, even more than 2007 Patriots. Their job was to seek and destroy, it probably didn't feel like a win for them unless they knocked out at least a few players each game lol
What a great year to be a Bears fan. 🐻
Except Marino and the Dolphins.
Ditka was forever over heralded by that one season, Buddy Ryan is the TRUE LEADER of that squad.
Fuck Ditka not getting Walter a Tuddie. Fridge fat ass was just a cheap gimmick, Walter Payton was a true Legend.
DITKA IS SENILE NOW AND SAD TO SEE
He was a forward thinker lol . Thinking about the future of the 2 point conversion
Look at Bud Carson's face (10:30) here, he knew this was a dumb ass decision
Granted, the Jets were running up the score on the Buccaneers as payback for what happened in that final game of 1984.
The only way this decision even kinda makes sense is if Walton had already decided to go for the onside kick right after.
The real question is, where do I get a copy of this entire game? I am trying to collect as many Lions games from the 1980s as I can and I don't have this one.
I don't think it's legal to watch that kind of suffering, especially if you have people who love you. Reach out if you feel like self harming, tell an adult you can trust and I promise it will help
Enberg & Olsen were a great "B" squad. I always liked them growing up in the 80's. Those 80's Jets teams seemed like Walton was the main thing holding them back. Good players, good assistant coaches, & then there's Joe.
Joe was notorious for running the ball on let’s say a 3rd or 4th and 7. James Franklin at Penn State runs the ball on a 4th and 8 on what could’ve been the game winning drive vs Ohio State. But his stupidity was rewarded with 75 mil for 10 years. Sometimes stupidity pays😜
Merlin and Endberg = Madden Summerall, but they were so much different in the way they called games. I was spoiled in the 1980's
There might be a worse one, JaguarGator9. It was from 1993 with the Chiefs playing at the Seahawks. Down 31-13 with almost exactly 10 minutes left, 2 time Super Bowl winning coach Tom Flores elects a 37-yards FG attempt. The successful kick reduced the Chief lead from 18 points to 15 points. Note that this was before the 2-point conversion was added meaning that the Seahawks STILL needed 3 scores, 2 of them touchdowns. Watching the game live, I remember the Kingdome crowd actually booing the successful FG. I cannot find the 4th down distance, but that is almost irrelevant. Even at 4th and goal from the 20, you have to go down 18 with 10 minutes left. I am sure that Seahawks winning percentage was actually reduced by a successful FG, which is not that uncommon.
Chuck Knox did the same thing with John Kasay two years earlier, also against the Chiefs at the Dome, sending Kasay out for a field goal to make it 19-6 with six minutes left. Except that's bit more understandable since it was a three-score game anyway. Plus considering the total disaster of the Flores era that followed everybody who booed that day should be shot, I'm not kidding.
Joe Walton and his clipboard! I guess there was something wrong in there for him to make such a bonehead decision.
Also, nice to see Al Toon. That man had balls for playing football with only one eye. (he was legally blind in his right eye)
Im a Pats fan but as a kid playing in the school yard I was always Al Toon :) Such a great player
I think the other Jets receiver, Wesley Walker, was blind in one eye.
@@CTubeMan Ah yes, after just checking out to confirm or deny my memory it is Walker who was blind in one eye.
My apologies to Mr. Toon. He was still one helluva receiver though.
Al Toon is one of my favorite players of all time
wes welker really had a long career
Those Jets teams had talent. Wesley Walker, Al Toon, Pat Leahy, Freeman McNeil, Mark Gastineau, Joe Klecko, Abdul Salam, Marvin Powell, and Ken O'Brien playing MVP against Dan Marino. Better coaching in a weak AFC they should've made some moves further in the playoffs
oh as a life long Jets fan I remember this game. I was watching it with my family.
This isnt that bad with 7m
The details are hazy after so many years, but I remember Walton resigned from the Jets suddenly, without explanation. He went incommunicado for a while and his daughter (!) assured the press that after a time Dad would explain all. I'm pretty sure he never did.
You might have had a point 7 months ago. In the NFC Championship game this year, Green Bay faced 4th and goal from the 8 yard line, trailing the Buccaneers 23 to 31. With 2:07 remaining. A touchdown and a 2 pointer would tie it. Matt Lafleur kicked a worthless FG keeping them down by 5. ??? So they still need a touchdown. Even if you fail on 4th down, your odds are tremendously better, pinning the Bucs inside the 10. No, the Jets have actually been topped in ineptitude. This was a trip to the Superbowl on the line. There is a new king of idiotic FG attempts. Matt Lafleur, take a bow, your the stupidest ever.
Got you covered: ua-cam.com/video/LwjetlzE6s8/v-deo.html
Was the dumbest field goal until the 2021 NFCCG
Joe Walton was a horrible HC. The mid 80s Jets had a ton of talent on both sides of the ball but terrible Coaching really hurt
1. What? A stupid decision involving two of the dumb franchises of the NFL? Well someone has to win here!
2. This was also the game where Ahmad Radhad proposed on air to Phyllicia Allen.
3. Yeah people rag on Joe Walton, but his Jets coaching record (53-57-1) is still second place all time in team history in terms of tenure and wins/losses to Weeb Ewbank.
i don't follow american football so i only have a basic understanding of the game. can you score a td if a kick rebounds from the post? if you can and i'd been that kicker i'd have aimed for the post.
No you cannot. Play is dead at that point
I like that idea, although it would be a fluke
lol jets have always sucked havent they....
even when they won the super bowl, they were a massive underdog
It is fix that why points shave
I dont understand the point of this video. The Lions scoring another TD makes the Jets kicking a FG irrelevant. So if they went for it and scored they still would have been down 31-17. It wasnt like the Lions stopped scoring
Nots really about that though. The Jets going for it on 4th down and potentially scoring a TD could have given the Jets positive momentum and make it a one score game. Settling for a field goal feels like they are giving up.
Jets vs Lions. Ew
A plane crash on top of a train wreck. 😧
Wow you are so smart you should be a coach. Oh that's right, you're not.
Sheesh, what crawled up your butt and died?
