Dear Graham so sorry you have had a accident. Hope you are soon feeling a lot better. While you are recovering it gives you a chance to plan and think ideas through. This is the beauty of Model Railway Layouts they can and have to change to new situations and circumstances . Best wishes Take care Richard Canterbury.

HI...Thank you for your very kind comment, yet again I've been blown away by everybody's kind words and suggestions, work has started on moving the layout around and progress is being made, which I will cover in my nest video I think in the end this move will be for the better, as for me well I'm starting to move around a bit better now so hopefully I'm on the mend!!, I've had quite a few comments on the video so to make it easier for me I'm just going to copy and paste this reply thank you all once again...Graham

Hi Graham! Sorry to hear of your accident, and hopefully it won't be too long before the new hip feels like more of an advantage than a problem! I'm sure this will happen once you've got used to it, and are off the crutches, although it may take a few months! My dad had two new hips when he was in his sixties, and once he'd got over the initial trauma, he was like a new man! He was a very active gardener, and both hips lasted for over twenty years! Just take your time, get some kits, and start building! We'll all still be here when you post again... All the best, Ian.

Your video popped up on my feed 🙂. Sorry to hear of your accident but don't worry too much about the life of the hip joint. I've had one in for 18 years and still going strong despite being chronically overweight 70 yr old waiting for a knee replacement! Yes, they do wear out but the revision (replacement) operation is possible. Depending on the type of joint the surgeon used they can replace the ball or the cup much easier than the original replacement. As others have mentioned, a lift out section seems a good bet on your layout and with careful positioning can become a feature of a bridge. Good luck and look after yourself.

I am not surprised it has shaken you up and I could see how much in the video. That must have been a nasty fall. I can understand you not wanting to wear the new hip out too soon, and I think avoiding crawling under the layout is a good idea. But I have known a lot of people of our age have hip replacements who were still able to do a great deal once they had recovered from the operation. It will be good as your freedom of movement starts to return, any discomfort subsides and you can get rid of the crutches. I suspect building some kits for the layout will help to fill your time as you recover from the operation. Good luck with your rehabilitation and I look forward to updates as and when you can make them. Stephen

Hello Graham, I’ve just come across your channel and was intrigued as I could see a couple of crutches.
Turns out that you had your accident 4 days ahead of myself and I broke my left hip on 31st October 2024 slipping on our recently washed kitchen floor!
I know exactly what you’re going through as I have now realised that the HO and HOm Swiss layout that I have been building in my loft over the last two years is no longer feasible at 57 with a replacement hip combined with a damaged pelvis from a cycling accident two years ago.
Luckily I do have a second garage with a partially completed O gauge layout in there which will have to be sold (I also have partial vision and thought in 2018 that O gauge would be ideal but the fiddly couplings have defeated me).
So whilst in hospital and with my enforced rest period at home it has focused my mind.
I’m now quite looking forward to moving the Swiss project to the garage and restarting it from scratch with lots of lessons learned for “not doing it like that again”!
This time I’m going to turn a smaller space to my advantage and use a couple of helices to get from the fiddle yard to the main layout and then again up to some Gotthard line type mountain passes giving a multi-level layout - eat your heart out Miniatur Wunderland.
What I guess I’m trying to say is that I would never had considered such an arrangement previous to my accident and there are often opportunities that had never been apparent previously can be presented to us in these situations.
Charlie Bishop’s Chadwick channel uses helices so I’m going to copy him and learn from his lessons, same supplier (DCC Automation) and also get professionally built baseboards this time as opposed to my not too bad but not brilliant own attempts.
Without wanting to be morbid I also want the layout to easily taken down and sold when I go to the great engine shed in the sky and not leave my family with a nightmare.
Clearing my father’s house was a nightmare so I want to plan for that when constructing this layout.
Please keep your chin up my friend, you can always do better with a new layout project, I’ve battled through PTSD over the last couple of years and this set back should really have crushed me but through my therapy I am relishing the challenge and really really looking forward to building bigger and better !
Go for it Graham, we are hugely lucky to have this a our life time hobby 😅😅
    Best wishes,
    Dominic

Hi.. thank you for your fantastic comment, I must admit you tube does seem to have a fantastic little community where model railways are concerned, and the comments I have received have been fantastic and helpful and have lifted me up, your layout sounds fantastic and your plans seem to be more advanced than mine, hope they all turn out ok, just wondering do you share it on you tube if not maybe you should, just a thought….G

Get well soon 🙏 Try to get plenty of rest. I too am feeling my age, still working at 61, but dearly wish I could retire.
Have a look at the design “Double OO Dave” is thinking of. The way he’s designed it he can access the centre of his layout from the door access. Very good if one’s mobility is restricted. All the very best, Nigel

Hi Graham I've just subscribed to your channel. Sorry to hear about your hip hope you get back to some normality soon. When I started this new layouts I plan it so I didn't have to crawl under the layout to get in or do any of the wiring under the layouts, the wiring all runs in trunking at the front and then goes to panel what drop down to the electronics. I did this to help my knees that are suffering with old age. Look after yourself look forward to your next video and I will watch some of your past videos. Colin

Good luck with your recovery. Have a think about a liftout/swing gate to access the center of the layout, or even a dogbone type as favoured by our American cousins.
Even though we think we are indestructible once we reach a certain age thoughtful planning can make all the difference to the long-term continuation of our enjoyment of our hobbies.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you recover soon.
You mentioned about changing things around because you can't crawl under the layout for access. The section you have to crawl under could be made into a hinged lift up section, there are many examples here on UA-cam. Perhaps this idea could save you time and effort rather than moving things around.

Hi Graham, just liked and subbed, so sorry to hear about your accident, I've just started my next layout, but I've got a similar dilemma to you, the train room is 9ft,by 6ft with the door at one end,if I make a tail-chaser, it means either a lift-out section, or a duck-under,(I'm not getting any younger, and I've got arthritis in my knees), but an end-to-end means the door can be unobstructed, so I'm still in two minds as to what to do, anyway, get well soon, and thanks for sharing, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.

first things first, look after yourself and the layout will eventually get sorted. I don't have your issue, but I do have back problems, and I cut my layout down from 3ft wide to 2.5ft and although it restricted the modelling it has proved the best decision I've made. And what is 6 inches between friends 🤫
My own layout is a walk in, and goes around the room with two bridging sections, one of which allows access to cupboard.
Yes keep yourself active with whatever you feel like doing, get someone in to help sort the room and computer.
    Wishing you all the best

This is the first time that I have come across your channel. I am sorry to hear about your accident at work. Did you say that you were going to do something with a MOT piece of equipment? I spent 30 years in the British Motor Industry. The last 20 as an independent service and repair centre including a MOT bay. I have lived in Thailand for nearly 20 years and have taught English to Thai students in schools, colleges, and universities. I retired at the end of February this year and finally I am now able to start building my layout. I have the first board set up and I can run trains on the inner and outer ovals. The sidings are not powered at the moment, but I have been putting a lot of thought into how I am going to do it. I wish you a speedy recovery and I will take a look at your other videos. Martin.
