Glad it worked OK I aimed for 2% and got within 10% ! I needed £100 worth of polystyrene incline to do my layout - You did all the hard work anyway it just needed you to cut the supports to the correct height and avoid the expense. I actually used a couple of sheets of Celotex to provide three levels - A single track return loop under the main level and a raised station above.

Hi Graham, just liked and subbed, so sorry to hear about your accident, I've just started my next layout, but I've got a similar dilemma to you, the train room is 9ft,by 6ft with the door at one end,if I make a tail-chaser, it means either a lift-out section, or a duck-under,(I'm not getting any younger, and I've got arthritis in my knees), but an end-to-end means the door can be unobstructed, so I'm still in two minds as to what to do, anyway, get well soon, and thanks for sharing, take care, all the best from Scotland, Stephen.

Good luck with your recovery. Have a think about a liftout/swing gate to access the center of the layout, or even a dogbone type as favoured by our American cousins. Even though we think we are indestructible once we reach a certain age thoughtful planning can make all the difference to the long-term continuation of our enjoyment of our hobbies.

first things first, look after yourself and the layout will eventually get sorted. I don't have your issue, but I do have back problems, and I cut my layout down from 3ft wide to 2.5ft and although it restricted the modelling it has proved the best decision I've made. And what is 6 inches between friends 🤫 My own layout is a walk in, and goes around the room with two bridging sections, one of which allows access to cupboard. Yes keep yourself active with whatever you feel like doing, get someone in to help sort the room and computer. Wishing you all the best

This is the first time that I have come across your channel. I am sorry to hear about your accident at work. Did you say that you were going to do something with a MOT piece of equipment? I spent 30 years in the British Motor Industry. The last 20 as an independent service and repair centre including a MOT bay. I have lived in Thailand for nearly 20 years and have taught English to Thai students in schools, colleges, and universities. I retired at the end of February this year and finally I am now able to start building my layout. I have the first board set up and I can run trains on the inner and outer ovals. The sidings are not powered at the moment, but I have been putting a lot of thought into how I am going to do it. I wish you a speedy recovery and I will take a look at your other videos. Martin. Get well soon 🙏 Try to get plenty of rest. I too am feeling my age, still working at 61, but dearly wish I could retire. Have a look at the design “Double OO Dave” is thinking of. The way he’s designed it he can access the centre of his layout from the door access. Very good if one’s mobility is restricted. All the very best, Nigel

Hi Graham! Sorry to hear of your accident, and hopefully it won't be too long before the new hip feels like more of an advantage than a problem! I'm sure this will happen once you've got used to it, and are off the crutches, although it may take a few months! My dad had two new hips when he was in his sixties, and once he'd got over the initial trauma, he was like a new man! He was a very active gardener, and both hips lasted for over twenty years! Just take your time, get some kits, and start building! We'll all still be here when you post again... All the best, Ian.

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you recover soon. You mentioned about changing things around because you can't crawl under the layout for access. The section you have to crawl under could be made into a hinged lift up section, there are many examples here on UA-cam. Perhaps this idea could save you time and effort rather than moving things around.

I am not surprised it has shaken you up and I could see how much in the video. That must have been a nasty fall. I can understand you not wanting to wear the new hip out too soon, and I think avoiding crawling under the layout is a good idea. But I have known a lot of people of our age have hip replacements who were still able to do a great deal once they had recovered from the operation. It will be good as your freedom of movement starts to return, any discomfort subsides and you can get rid of the crutches. I suspect building some kits for the layout will help to fill your time as you recover from the operation. Good luck with your rehabilitation and I look forward to updates as and when you can make them. Stephen

The hillside has come out really well Graham. I agree with you that it is amazing how much difference a bit of green makes. The two tones on the hillside really worked together and the final result looks very professional. Not surprising that enthusiasm for working on the layout waxes and wanes. It's a hobby not a job after all and we often move between pastimes. I agree too that thoughts constantly occur as you start building. All part of the fun of the hobby a you say. Stephen

as with most hobbies, you'll get times where you don't have the interest to do it. I paint, draw, and, model railways and some days I do nothing other than watch youtube. I spent 8 months using AnyRail software and when laying the track for my finalised design I still changed my mind on certain aspects, that is why model railways evolve and are never finished. Looking forward to your next update, and the videos are fine in length

My work / modelling bench is a folding workbench (Wickes) I made a wood frame for it to stand on and to that I added Castors so its easy to move about. On the top its a sheet of MDF (sized so that my cutting mat fits within a fence to stop things dropping off) with a length of wood attached underneath for the workbench jaws to grip to. then cut down the workbench legs to give the correct height to work on. I have added a angle poise light and some short tubes for tools to sit in (waste pipe cut off's)

INCLINES ! A 3% Gradient is 1 in 33.3 in standard British parlance. Such a gradient is extremely steep for a Railway. The Famous Hemerdon bank just East of Plymouth is 1 in 42 (about 2.4%), and is one of the steepest mainline gradients in Britain. So steep that HST's were banned from this gradient if one power car was inoperative, and had to be assisted by a Diesel locomotive. Even gradients of 1 in 100 (1%) posed problems for trains. The laws of physics apply equally to real trains and models, as the problem is you are fighting Gravity ! In N scale the most powerful and useful models for climbing gradients are of course those that include Traction tyres. Not a popular idea in Britain, so few British outline N scale models have them. Hence with metal wheels on metal track model locomotives will begin wheel slipping fairly easily and will rarely be capable of pulling real life loads up even a 1% (1 in 100 gradient). Wheel slipping will of course increase wear and tare on wheels, (removal of chrome or other surface finishes) and inflict wear and tare on motors greatly reducing their life. Virtually all Overseas N scale manufacturers, such as Fleischmann, Roco, Tomix, Kato, Micro Ace, fit two or more traction tyres as the norm. Which allows such models to virtually double (or more) the loads they can haul without imposing damaging stresses on motors and wheels. However the reason for the reluctance of British manufacturers to fit traction tyres to any model in any scale revolves around the general ignorance of the "customers" of how to use such models. Modern tooling now allows "Traction tyres" to be fitted without any drawbacks. But ANY loco fitted with Traction tyres MUST NOT, under any circumstances be pushed along the track by EVEN AN INCH. Or the traction tyres are likely to be "stripped/stretched", and therefore rotate freely around the wheel, negating ANY benefit they had when fitted. I've used Japanese outline N scale models for decades, on my exhibition layouts, as seen in "Continental Modeller", as they are to quote an advertising slogan "Rolls Royces at Ford Prices". And virtually every Japanese outline model comes with traction tyres, and I have NEVER had any problems with these items. Happy Modelling😝

Hi Graham. Nice job. Good to see the old girl running so well again. I think that knowing that other loco's have sat for so long I think that we can assume that they will all need a service before you run them. I too have the Scotsman with twin tenders still in its original box. The Duchess looked lovely in her finery. Well done. Nice little oval. Good luck with the garden plan. Regards.

That's an excellent result Graham. The use of the dowels to fix the parts of the incline has worked really well and your Scotsman made light work of the pulling its train. There was no wheel slip even when it started up the incline. Stephen

Hi Graham, I've just seen this video and listened to you talk about 'what happens' in the future. I'm 75 now, coming up to 76. My trains and my layout are my hobby. Now, I don't live for them in the sense that there's nothing else in life for me but rather like an artist with a canvas, what goes into my layout is part of me - my imagination. my thoughts, creating what I want after taking a glimpse of the world outside. From the outset I told myself I would never finish my layout. That means I've always got something to put into it everyday. It keeps me busy, it keeps me occupied. So should anything happen to me my daily input will cease - but I won't be around to know. Others might view it as a work of art or a pile of junk; my only request is my rolling stock is sold off and the proceeds given to a good cause. That's about it. Today's today (as far as my railway is concerned) never mind tomorrow. All the best.

Great stuff! I'm in the process of building an incline so I know it's not an easy job. I wanted to have a shuttle service for my two DMUs to run from my main station (on one level) around to my country station (which is on the bottom level). Somehow though I have to navigate around the TMD which I'm also building right now. Considering they're plastic wheel on your coaches that 'Scotsman' did a very good job - but then again, so did you! Thanks for the video.

Graham, a lot the time (for me) having the confidence to have a go at fixing things. Having a go also means having the pleasure of finding how thing go together/work, gaining confidence and saving money. Plus you have the spring to put back on to your wagon

Superb. Well done Graham and thanks for sharing this. Just shows what is possible if you are prepared to take the plunge. Incidentally, I thought those TMC prices looked pretty fair to be honest. You don’t get many specialists working for £25 an hour, but nevertheless you have saved a tidy sum by sorting it yourself! Nice one.

It can be a scary thing to take apart a loco and well done on giving it a go and it looks to be running well. There are so many things you need to be able to do as a railway modeller including a repair man. Those springs can be a pain. It is supposed to be possible to refit that spring but good luck with trying! Stephen

You've earned a new subscriber here. I think you're a very brave man putting your work out there into UA-camland when you've never done scenery before. It's great to see someone starting out and making their first attempts at it, and successfully too in my opinion. I'm quite envious. I'd love to be in a position to give it a go but alas I don't have anything like the space needed for the grand hopes and plans inside my bonehead lol. Good luck with your ongoing work. I shall follow with interest.

Couldn't agree more! I spent 120 quid on Hornby points before I knew better. I have to put weights on everything to get them to shunt and it is just random as to whether they derail or not. Going to be all Streamline for my brewery yard.

I sprayed all my station track, including points, before I knew better. I then spent hours trying to clean the paint off as everything ran like a bag of spanners. Still isn't great now. Always mask up the inside and top of the rails and don't spray points.

Hi Graham! Nice to see that I'm not the only one that had problems reversing wagons across setrack points! The problem is that if Peco made setrack with the curves required to satisfy medium radius streamline points, you'd require a much larger area to lay the track, which sort of defeats the purpose of setrack! I'd be happy for them to put warnings on the packets of setrack points though, explaining what their pitfalls are! I'd also like to see manufacturers be more honest about the radius of curve their rolling stock can handle! Anyway, great to see that your testing went well! All the best, Ian.

I've been buying HO and N switches of every brand since around 1980 including the cheap and deluxe lines except Bachmann fasttrack and the only brand I have had 0 problems with is the KATO switches except the #4's need a bit of tuning but I mostly avoid them anyway. I've always been able to make all brands reliable with some work, but I agree it shouldn't have to be that way. My Lionel switches of every generation have always just worked. Not sure why nobody has ever made bulletproof HO and N switches. Glad to see a new video by the way.

The test all went well Graham. Good to see everything running as it should. I too wonder why PECO use the first radius curves and points in starter kits (so do Farish in their sets because PECO make the track for them I think). I think the problem is that newer models can’t handle first radius in the way older models could. For the wagons it maybe the bigger wheel flanges kept things on the track better and people with Minitrix older Poole Graham Farish, or old PECO locos don’t seem to have a problem on first radius and those who use Fleischmann track and locos say their engines cope with first radius easily. The problems of set track was one of the reasons I decided on Code 55 from the start even though it requires a bit of work to get used to using flexitrack. Stephen

Hi.. Thanks for your comment Steven, I do sometimes wonder why we spend so much money on these thing only to find out we are doing it wrong, or we have bought the wrong thing, as for the set track points they do have there place if you are building a narrow gauge railway they probably are good, but peco should at least by now be making all newbees know that for n gauge medium radius is the why to go, but at least for now I seem to be making some progress...G

Hay Graham, looks like you have had a long journey since your channel first popped up. First and foremost, every single, modder out there (me included) have, well let's just say made a mistake along the way, so do not despair, and do not give up. If you are going to start over (I have done before), what i doo these days is pop the track and points on a sheet of scrap ply and aerosol spray them with sleeper grime. Once dry, just a little wipe over with a track rubber will clean the rails and some verry fine sandpaper around the fishplate areas dose the job, you can then go ahead any lay it all down and you are already ahead of the game. I hope this helps. Cheers, Paul.
