  • Many people asked me where my new channel The Journey disappeared and if I'm OK. In this video I share what was lately happening with me, what are my new plans, how Critical Thinkers channel came about and everything you need to know about where this journey is going to next.

    For years I used to have a lack of critical thinking myself. I used to believe many things which had little evidence or truth behind them. These beliefs led me to decisions which did not turn out to my favor. Eventually I discovered critical thinking and changed my life for the better. Now I choose what I believe in with much more care. Make better, more informed decisions and enjoy the results. Yet it doesn’t take much time to see that many people still fail to separate true information from false. That’s why I created the Critical Thinkers channel.
    If you are looking for a critical thinking channel - look no more and let's create a culture of practical thinking together!
    In this channel you will learn what is critical thinking, various critical thinking skills, find critical thinking exercises, learn how to use critical thinking in a debate, learn about the best critical thinking books out there, find critical thinking tutorials what results a lack of critical thinking has and much more.

    I really admire your humility, you’ve gone so far from where you began and the journey isn’t just about martial arts, it’s about facing your doubts and fears
    As a former aikidoka and currently judo and BJJ practicioner but also as a young adult who’s trying to figure out what to do with my life I really relate to those thought, I’m facing doubts everyday at work, after the training, or even just when I can’t sleep at night but to know I’m not the only one, and that even someone like you who has gone so far still experience this really makes me think that I’m not supposed to be the invincible fighter people expect me to be and it’s ok to be just a human being
    I hope you’ll find your way on this new channel, don’t be afraid to fail sometimes.
    Thank you for sharing your journey, thank you for inspiring me and many others.

      Thank you Steve! Your comment means a lot to me.
      I know that the journey from Aikido to Judo and BJJ is a difficult one and the fact that you've made that transition speaks about your strength of character. Many times we think and focus on the times we failed or on our shortcomings (which we all have plenty of) and we tend to disregard some of the amazing things we've did. This bias then can lead us to feel bad. But it's so important to celebrate and be proud of the great things we've did (of course, while acknowledging our shortcomings and failures).
      I've met some amazing people through my travels, some celebrated and respected globally and let me tell you: they also have their shortcomings, fears and doubts, even if it may be harder to spot them. But does that make them less great? I think the opposite. Having doubts or fears says nothing about us. It's what we do with them that matters... :) And it's not about having no doubts or fears I think. Instead it's about accepting them, letting them be and instead, focusing on the good parts of ourselves, knowing that we are good enough and them continuing to go on our journey... :)
      Well, at least these are my 2 cents... 😁 Thanks again for your comment

    Ï am happy to hear this update from you. The emphasis you lay on meaning of passions, values, provides a very good insight. As also a former aikidoka like you with a longer time than you, your journey has helped me tremendously, having a big WHY is very significant, having something to offer will necessarily come from your journey. Well there is a field where you can be a real expert in that is your journey. You are a Lithuanian guy, having passions, , ranging from martial arts, to relationships, to traveling, to thinking, to connecting, to video, to many more to come. You are... ROKAS, I love learning from ROKAS, at this point it not really what you are specialized or what you are going to be specialized in. It's your humility, your process, your mind. I don't know if you are familiar with philosophy ? Ancient and modern, which is a huge path to critica' thinking. John Danaher and Firas Zahabi are also philosophers, maybe you can contact them for this subject.
    The reason why I stick to bjj, is the thinking process involved there, based on fundamental principles that can resonate in my daily life. It's more the spiritual intellectual and mental aspect there which makes it

    As a master of none, or just a person of none, I found comfort in re-framing this sentiment; that of the dilettante. Someone pointed me toward the term “scanners”; people who bridge between people and disciplines, and this in-betweenness is the higher added value. Able to connect and facilitate. Either via communication and mediation or for instance via analytical perception. But of course this is a vulnerable term, abused and exploited by many who like to project themselves as awesome in order to mask ignorance. Anyway, my path started with the philosophy of science; the principles of scientific approaches in epistemology and ontology. It has given me a strong fundament for developing critical thinking, to critically assess literature and data that I like to absorb, to deconstruct, to stay open for falsification, to develop work hypotheses. Good luck with enjoying your new angle of foregrounding critical thinking. The industry and business of self realization and critical thinking, deserves some sharp critical assessments. I hope you’ll keep sharpening yourself and the things you sharpen yourself with. Cheers.

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  3 роки тому

      Thank you! That's a great point about the "scanners". I was actually reading a book lately debating the pros and cons of specialists and generalists and there were some great points made that specialists often end up having a narrow perspective while generalists, pretty much like you said, connect various dots that were not connected before. I think it's great to consider this higher added value as you so called it

    What I think critical thinking really lives from is the discussion with others. Therefore I would really love to see and think your channel would really benefit from something like a podcast or talk between you and other UA-camrs with similar goals for example What I've Learned and Dr. K who has a similar background to you, but draws different conclusions.

    • @Rokasleo

      That's a really great point! I really value feedback in my life and a good discussion is an active process of feedback, pressure testing and discovery. Having recorded conversations is definitely on my list, but you've just inspired me to come up with even more ideas on it. You can expect to see some more recorded conversations in the future, so thanks! 😉
      Also, I heard great things about Dr.K! I don't know yet about his background, but it would be awesome to learn more about him and to get to talk with him one day :)

    First of all Rokas, I admire you.
    You left behind things that you liked and gave you money, but you were not 100% convinced. This requires quite big balls, and not a lot of people dares to do such a thing. (I include myself).
    I like you new videos but its true that you can include yourself on this new style of "images while explain". Also it would be great if you talk about historical figures that made critical thinking, or interview people who you consider critical thinkers.
    One question: do you remember a lot of things that you read or hear? Because on theese days where our mind is constantly stimulated, I have the feeling that I read or hear information about things that Im interested but at the end of the day I dont remember almost anything because of the ammount of difierent info I have. How you do it?
    Greetings from Spain and wish you well brave man!

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  3 роки тому +1

      First of all thanks for your support Daniel!
      I will definitely work on including myself more in the channel. At the moment I am working hard to make sure there is a good amount of content for new people to receive value from it, so I rely on stock footage mostly. But soon enough when I will have a good amount of content released already, then I'll work more to put more footage with myself too (takes more work and time to do it :) ). Thanks for the feedback.
      I regards to interviews with critical thinkers - for sure! That is my plan and I already have a list of some amazing people I am planning to have recorded conversations with. The reason why I'm still waiting before I do it, is more of less the same - I want the channel to have more subscribers, so that when I'll ask the people to talk with me on record, they would know that people will definitely watch the conversation and their time won't be waisted :) But I'm planning to make my first interview soon!
      Your idea about historical figures is great! I haven't thought about it before! I'll add it to my list of ideas and I have a feeling I will try it out! Thanks.
      About remembering. That's a good question. I am actually quite fond of my memory and I do use a strategy to maintain information. First of all I use a technique I've learned which is taught for remembering names. I just apply it to everything. It's all about making associations. Our brain thinks in associations: it associates different things together and creates a sort of a neuro-net to hold that information together. The more in your mind I connect new information with old information, the better I remember it. For example - when I hear about a new critical thinking skill, I think in my mind what technique is similar and connect the two together, this way retaining information better.
      I also do my best to read information which is somewhat familiar with me (not a completely new field), but also new and challenging enough, to expand my horizons and knowledge. This way not all of the information is 100% surprising and there are plenty of things I can associate it with. Then with each book I keep expanding and challenging my knowledge. I find that if I read book which has 90% of new information for me, I get much more lost and remember much less :)
      Last of all, when I read or listen to an audio book, I make sure I am super attentive. I think my meditation skills from the past help here. I focus at least 70% of my mind on it and try to not do anything else, which would require much of my focus. So for example as I go to the store to do shopping, as I walk to it I listen to an audio book, but as I am at the store and need to think what I will buy, I pause it. If I find myself thinking hard about something else, I pause the book. But then again, I always do my best to make sure my focus is on the book/new information. I think you get better with practice :)
      Oh, and one more thing! It's widely said that sharing what you learned helps and I find that to be true to myself too. Every time I learn something that I find really interesting and want to keep the info, I go and share the story to someone (my gf, parents, friends, etc.) or as I said in the video, if I make a video about it, that helps me to really settle the information in.
      Writing down notes helps too :)
      Damn... So much info here. I didn't realize I do so much to retain information before I answered to your question 😅 I think I'll make a video about it in the future now 😁

    16:14 "I believed in spiritual stuff ..." - there's nothing wrong in believing in spiritual stuff, or having spiritual searches (not sure how this should be said in english). In fact, i would say it's a necessity. After all, society cares only for the superficial and material aspect of things. Tipically if you want to find out answers for more difficult questions, existential questions and whatnot, you need to get into spirituality one way or another. I think that thinking overall is definitely a necessity, and people should do it more, however i also think it's very easy to get to the other extreme, to the extreme where atheists and non-spiritual people are: the extreme at which they reject anything that is not proven by current society's science. What i'm trying to say is that while thinking and critical thinking is a must, we must not limit ourselves to only that.

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  3 роки тому

      I agree with you in some degrees. I also think that a balance is important and that critical thinking does not have all the answers. There are so many things we do not know. At the same time I think in conversations or discussions about spirituality it's important to define what we mean by spirituality to begin with. Are we looking into religion? Esoteric, supernatural and mystical? Or something else? Spirituality is used in so many contexts that we may be having two different things on our minds what we mean by spirituality and have a conversation thinking that we are talking about the same thing.
      Also, maybe philosophy in such a discussion could be considered as an alternative choice?

    I understand your desire to narrow your field of expertise, but ironically it might mean you need to study more, not less. Take your analogy of a super doctor of just one ear. Such doctor would have to have an outstanding knowledge in many fields, like biology and microbiology , chemistry, sound physics, human anatomy, neurology, just to name a few, to be able to address anything that might go wrong with that one ear. Same with critical thinking. It may sound like a narrow subject, bound to a few techniques and tricks. But it is often closely related to many other complex subjects, like phycology for example. More often than not, we passionately defend our beliefs not because we know the truth, but because our brain makes us “feel” that we do. Our brain often “malfunctions” by trying too hard to fill the gaps in our perception of reality, even with illusions, and then it builds emotional “firewalls” around this “knowledge”, triggering false feelings of anger and hate toward anyone who tries to challenge it. It is subconscious, but if we learn to recognize these false emotions as a natural brain “bugs”, it becomes conscious, and we can start thinking rationally, or well, critically. So phycology often acts as a key to unlock the doors to critical thinking locked by our imperfect brain firewalls. I think you will not be able to avoid plunging head first into phycology sooner or later. I sense another channel renaming is on the horizon :)

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  3 роки тому

      Well, I will definitely do my best to remain with creating no more additional channels 😅 But with I do agree with the main idea of what you are saying. Critical thinking is definitely such a broad subject. I would also add good knowledge of philosophy as one of the fields important to master for an expert critical thinker. At the same time I still see this as a journey that I can take together with my community/audience. And the fact that it's such a long journey makes things even better 😁 There is so much to learn and all of this learning can be done gradually together :)

    So you were part of an Aikido organisation outside of Japan, but decided not to investigate it to its roots, then you decided to go deeper into martial arts more broadly - on your 'martial arts journey,' and only went deeper into sportive martial arts competing that revolved around grappling-oriented safety rules. You didn't take up kendo or western fencing, even - two martial arts that are way more 'martial' than grappling, and which have more broadly dictated the techniques and philosophy of traditional martial art forms all over the world than grappling has, but in any case, you felt your were 'done' with martial arts. After that you divorced your wife after presumably swearing 'til death do us part,' and then you half-heartedly donned a kind of 'superhero' costume. Then you continued on 'the journey' without a clear destination in mind, and now you are reading like mad, trying to put together fresh angles on life philosophy with a 'critical thinking' journey - which is basically just you reading/listening to books and recording videos about those books to share your thoughts with others.... Please forgive me for saying this, but your most lingering and tangible message you have been putting out so far is that you are not prepared to actually study or commit to anything properly or in-depth enough. If you are really interested in critical thinking, for example, just study proper philosophy, not just the current most popular or fashionable marketing or 'find your purpose' theories, and go straight to the source. There is a whole and very interesting history and tradition of critical thinking - Socrates, for example, but again you seem to be just doing a shallow, cursory effort on this front. I am investing time and energy here just to share what I have seen - as a fan from the early days of aikido vs mma, which was noble and exciting. You even had a look at Hema, but what about the more serious stuff that came from people actually preparing for hand-to-hand real life battles and had been in melee battles - Kendo? Arnis? 'Ninjutsu,' even? What you seem to have been afraid of are SWORDS and how they relate to martial arts - which have been the symbol of the martial artist in every developed culture. Check out skallagrim, for example, he could tell you a thing or two about REAL martial arts, but your stayed clear of any of that, and stuck to SPORTS. It is a great pity. I hope you can think critically about what I have said here, you are a great content-maker. All the best for the future.
