I Realized That I Lack Education • The Journey

  • I always wanted to offer something valuable to other people, but recently I asked myself: do I really know and have enough to give? Am I capable and educated enough to offer value and insights which are unique in the fields which I am inspired to explore? My answer is: no. My chosen solution? Go mad with learning.

    I used to give a lot of unsolicited advice and even be a little preachy when I was younger. I noticed that the more I know about something and the more life experience I get, the less I tend to give advice, because I am more aware of my lack of wisdom, and when I do give advice, I do it in a more humble way and I try to be short and concise. This change in my personality is one of the cool things I enjoy most about getting older.

    I can relate well to the pursuit of knowledge, and in fact it's something I still obsess over sometimes. Likewise with discipline and work; at least in American culture, work and education are highly treasured values. But the problem I see in myself and others with this is that it becomes a "thirst", and we start to devalue ourselves or feel lacking because we "don't have the right knowledge" or we "don't do enough work", and so then we start overloading ourselves and burning out. It's an interesting problem where on the one hand our goals depend on knowledge and work, but on the other hand we can destroy ourselves or miss/dilute the point by working too hard or just cramming ideas into our head.
    I read (part of) a (Buddhist) book called "Hooked!" a while ago, when at the time I was just piling books onto my bookshelf to read (I never got through much more than two). I read that one thing we tend to do is equate knowledge with "power" in much the same way that we tend to equate material wealth with power, or something along those lines. In other words, just as people crave all the goodies in the world to build a sense of self around them, we crave all the knowledge we can get to build a sense of self around that as well. And in that sense, isn't this yet another potentially toxic industry, like the "self-help" industry? What do you think?
    Wishing all the best.

    I wish you all the best in your career, which is what I think you are trying to build. But as a journey, it is starting to look no different from anybody else’s life, so I have to bow out again, just like I did with martial arts journey after you changed the course. I wish you finally find what you are looking for and stick with it. Good luck.

    It is not always necessary for a teacher / coach to be equally or more skilled as the student / athlete, so if you keep studying BJJ and MMA, it might eventually lead into something useful even though you yourself didn't get close to being among the best of the best.

    You can educate yourself but part of calling it the journey is you share your ups and down setbacks and successes. Waiting to be perfectly proficient before teaching is admirable hit impractical. You can definitely start and learn more and then adjust and reflect :)

      Thank you for sharing this thought of line. When I've got the notion of doing some "obsessed learning" my initial feeling was to drop everything else almost entirely to not waste time and to keep focus, but later I reflected and realized that there may be some good stuff to share along the path too. Maybe reviews of the books I've read, things I've discovered, interesting people I'll meet along the road and as you said: ups and downs on the way, which may be valuable to others too. I'll still think deeper on how much is actually worth sharing, but yet again, I appreciate you bringing up this question :)

      Oh yeah! These days we have all the opportunities to learn, just unfortunately so many people don't use them... Something I'm hoping to inspire at least a few individuals too do though :)
      Personally I am already spending a lot of time listening to audio books, reading and participating in an 8 month course already and I'm already starting to see really positive results that derive from this investment. I can only imagine what will happen with even more energy invested into it all.

    Incidentally, I'm around the same stage in my life: thinking seriously about also following a course to become a coach. What factors did you bring into consideration when choosing? :)
    Anyways, take care man! And keep journeying. ^^

      Oh! So cool to hear! I am considering an option to pursue formal education post coaching course too (such as psychotherapy), but I will still see about that with time and experience :)
      I was always attracted to coaching and figured that it could be a great, tested tool set for me to have a more formal approach to being useful to not only learn new, valuable approaches, but also to have a more clear way to support people and for people to reach out to me if they'd be interested to explore stuff together :)
      From what I am aware of, coaching is also quite flexible in a way where your own life experience and already possessed knowledge plays a factor. Given my intensive explorations of Aikido philosophy, martial arts, critical thinking, spirituality, etc. I thought that hopefully coaching could be a good platform to bring everything I already know together in an effective way.
      It was also suggested to me by a person I respect and asked advice of, which was a meaningful factor too :)
      What do you think attracts you to coaching?

  • @michelb8976

    Some of the people that I respect the most started with less education than me. However all of those kept learning throughout their whole life. I wouldn't say that they're "gone mad with learning", rather than that, at some point (and this is a common pattern), they've managed to get the right attitude towards knowledge. I am not sure how to properly articulate that, they would treat knowledge as come kind of precious treasure that has to be carefully acquired, refined and shared rather than consumed with gluttony. When You learn, You build yourself, this has to be done with proper timing and with proper sequence. Leading a young student trough the learning process by feeding him what he needs at any given point of time is exactly the role of a great teacher. When You mature You become able to set Your own path but right now, saying something like "Go mad with learning" makes me think that You're not right there yet, You still need guidance. Unfortunately I can't provide You with a good address, I only can hope that You'll eventually meet someone suitable.

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  4 роки тому +1

      I like what you are saying and I agree with your concept. When I say go mad with learning I'm not speaking of learning anything at all, all the time :) I am very careful and picky when I choose that I am reading or who I am learning from. It all has to be aligned with a vision and to have a purpose. It has to be practical and timely for me. So I basically agree with everything, apart from the part where you said that "I am not there yet" 😁 I guess you'd have to define more precisely what you mean by that and give arguments proving your point to make me convinced of it. But I honestly think it's just a misunderstanding coming from my explanation lacking detail of what I mean exactly :) In other words, I think we are on the same page. Plus it's also a reason why I've enlisted in the coaching course with some of the best experts in the world, since I think that learning from them, combined with the learning of my own before and after, will be a great combination, since learning from them may add the element of guidance.

      @@Rokasleo One passage that inspired me in the Hagakure is: "A samurai should be excessively obstinate. Anything done in moderation will fall short of your goals. If you feel that you are doing more than is needed, it will be just right." Your many travels around the world to learn from the best are for me a good example of that. What Mr Banguerski is sharing seems to apply more to wisdom rather than to knowledge/skills in my humble opinion. Consuming philosophy books "with gluttony" for example, without experiencing the ideas in the real world or reflecting on past experiences through the lens of those ideas may not be the optimal "attitude towards wisdom". However, from the many videos you've posted, that doesn't seem to be what you do at all. Good luck with your new adventure !

    I applaud your desire to improve yourself and to want to make a difference. No doubts about your work ethic either. You are clearly very driven. I would invite you to consider this, you speak a lot about not being the best or not being able to make a difference because of education, or because you have not learned from the best. Being the best is a very subjective thing. You may never be the "Best" at anything you study despite how much work and effort you put into it. That does not mean that you can't have a positive impact on the world and people's lives. No matter what you will always be the best you. You have been given certain qualities, abilities, tools and developed talents that no one else has in the combination that you have them. You have already used them very well and have reached people around the world. But I also understand you have the need to grow. So, be the best at growing you. Your talents and qualities will be exactly what you will need when people rely on you.
    It is very likely that you offer far more value than you realize. No one will ever "know enough". No one can ever know everything. But the universe puts us exactly where we need to be in order to learn the most...so you are in luck :D. One should always be mad with learning. Being the best doesn't really matter as long as the journey you walk is one that fulfills you and makes the best you. Good luck in your studies. I look forward to hearing about what you learn.

      @@Rokasleo sorry I worried that poorly lol. In lot of esoteric belief systems such as sufi Islam which is mine we come to understand mostly people are motivated by what hits their heart. Their core needs or wants. If you can figure that out and help them they benefit. Most of the time it's not about specific advice it's usually just listening and talking honestly about your experiences in a way that is relatable to them. They are the focus. Also acts of service too. You don't need to coach the friend who you decide to help him move his furniture into his new apartment. He thinks rokas is a good guy because he demonstrates that in his life. Especially if you don't make a deal about the help you give. You do it for your own reasons. And people come to you and see you as someone worth listening too and learning from. It's also okay to say I don't know.
      Another thing I learned is that the people who benefit from you will almost never be the people you think should benefit from you lol. Close people often take longest to accept a change.

    Sorry, having seen your film I still do not get, in which part of education you do lack also because education is a rather broad term. Is it formal education? Voccational education? - in your case it would be martial arts or youtubing (what a word) Social skills or graces? Probably you just lack a good dose of heroic ignorance?

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  4 роки тому +1

      Good question! I was aware that my core statement might be confusing. I think I said it 1) because I've enlisted into an 8 month coaching course, which I consider to be a sort of education 2) I am considering the idea of formal education after the coaching course, maybe psychology/psychotherapy. Will see how I feel about that when time comes closer.
      I think those two aspects made me use the term education, but basically I was referring to developing skills and knowledge necessary to be able to effectively achieve my goals. Since my goal at the moment is very broad (create positive change outside of martial arts / inspire a movement of people devoting themselves to self-mastery and creation of value for themselves and others) it needs both a quite wide dive into learning, plus some clarification and precision as time goes into what exactly would help me achieve that goal at least to some degree. So I am currently reading and learning things which seem aligned and could have potential value in pursuing this goal, for example just finished reading a book on intrinsic motivation (Drive by Daniel H. Pink) and moved on to How To Have Impossible Conversations by Peter Boghossian and James Lindsay. Still a bit of a rough diamond situation :)
      Can you elaborate more on "heroic ignorance"?

    • @najed23
      @najed23 4 роки тому +1

      @@Rokasleo When Clausewitz coined the term "Mists of War" he described the uncertainty and risks prior to a decision and in combat in general, and sooner or later you have to hit through the veils or mists and when you think to much esp, listen too much to advice you will fail. So you have to embrace ignorance and neuter the doubts to come to a decision - that is heroic ignornace. In life it is the decision to eliminate what is useless and emphazise that what is useful. Of course we can make mistakes, or not -there is risk but you have to decide - that is heroic ignorance. Usually ignorance is a vice but sometimes it is inevitable as is cruelty to defeat evil. But also a certain pride for having done things even so it didn`t meet everyone`s approval. That is in a nutshell but you can spend a life in study. Concerning education - I for my part went to university to get a certificate, education was my doing and choice. Ever considered reading more the classics or literrature and not the convenience food prepared by some self-declared self-help-gurus. Education is like martial arts, you have to find what suits you and enjoy the way.- but therefor you need heroic ignorance. But now I must take care about the shard in my labrador-puppies paw.

      Well, so first of all you clearly are focusing on my relationship with Aikido and your disagreement with my opinion. Secondly, all you offer in your comment here is your personal opinion not based on any facts or evidence. It's just your personal feeling that I "rattle on too much" and it being "boring". The correct way to say it would be, I quote: "I find it boring and maybe some other people find it boring too, at least I think so", or "I find it boring an my friend Tim finds it boring". Instead, you are taking your own personal experience and present it as a fact that for some reason, it almost seems, like you'd want me to take advice from. I know plenty of people directly who benefit from my videos and appreciate them, including ones about Aikido. You don't like my perspective, but that doesn't mean it's not a valid perspective, it doesn't naturally mean that it's not true, even if you don't agree with it and if you don't like it, or it counters your opinion, it doesn't make it useless. Yet again, there are top level experts who agree with my presented thoughts, there are a lot of people who expressed their gratitude for my explorations and presented arguments. So please, learn some humility and learn to distinguish your personal opinion from facts and learn to present your own personal opinion for what it is, instead of presenting it as some "all knowing" advice :)

Any martial art that isn't tested in some way isn't going to work and is only as good as the individual who practises it. You just happen to do it ass about-face... I've been saying for 30 years that mainstream aikido (Aikikai) is useless for self-defence, even before you were born!! Except then, there wasn't YT or the internet to express that opinion... I'm saying it now. .. Think less, go pro, whatever, actually DO and win a few real fights, then rethink your whole strategy with less of the "philosophical". Then I/we (those who tell me and think you are a pratt regardless) might think you more credible!!... Your no fighter that's for sure!!... It needs that mentality which you don't possess... Nothing wrong with that as many people just don't! All you have to do is go back to what you were doing which you are good at, like Aiki kai aikido... Just teach it solely as a health system, which it is!! But don't allude to it as a "self-defence" system, because it really just doesn't have one anymore!!... Unless the teacher is well versed in judo, boxing or any of the striking or grappling arts... It's as plain as that!!.... There is nothing wrong in doing aikido for health, just dont call it self defence or a fighting art unless you can actually do it and have proved it for yourself in real life and not just in the ring or arena!!... Something I've done on more than a few occasions and even went to court for, AND found not guilty!! ...Thanks to witnesses !!... That's 15 years before YT was even available!!
