Why I Quit Being a Yoga Instructor After 10 Years

  • After 10 years of teaching Yoga I stopped teaching it entirely due to very important reasons which I will share in this video. I ran my own yoga school, taught in yoga festivals, went to India for a spiritual trip and did the whole thing. Yet after it all I realized that no matter how much positive claims yoga instructors make - there is a very dark side to it all that needs to be addressed.

For years I used to have a lack of critical thinking. I used to believe many things which had little evidence or truth behind them. These beliefs led me to decisions which did not turn out to my favor. Eventually I discovered critical thinking and changed my life for the better. Now I choose what I believe in with much more care. Make better, more informed decisions and enjoy the results. Yet it doesn’t take much time to see that many people still fail to separate true information from false. That’s why I created the Practical Critical Thinkers channel.
If you are looking for a critical thinking channel - look no more and let's create a culture of practical thinking together!
In this channel you will learn what is critical thinking, various critical thinking skills, find critical thinking exercises, learn how to use critical thinking in a debate, learn about the best critical thinking books out there, find critical thinking tutorials what results a lack of critical thinking has and much more.

Dude, honestly, you are explaining WHY you should continue. Ostensibly, yoga has several components. You only discussed the Asanas, and you left out the spiritual component. That's honestly what I found lacking in most Yoga teachers. I am fortunate that I began practice outside of the United States, but very few teachers here in NYC bring any spiritually information into their class. Be the change you want. I've seen your other videos and you can actually be someone who helps Yoga grow.

I am sorry that you have had bad teachers and a bad experience. I did not feel ready to teach after my first 200hr training, but I went and did another one, and another one, and another one.. What I realized actually is that 200hr training, which is the Yoga Alliance minimum requirement and what most teachers have, is really not enough to be a teacher. It personally took me 10 yrs of learning (and it never stops). It is sad that many teachers don't get further education but I believe it is also the practicioner's responsibility to seek out the teacher who has had more education. Few of the things you mentioned in regards to alignment that you have heard from other teachers are absolutely ridiculous and shows how little knowledge they had. However, it is their lack of education and not yoga that is at fault, and unfortunately yoga gets a bad rep because of that. I have been teaching now for 20 years and I can still say that it is the most rewarding and fulfilling calling. I have never had a student injure themselves in class while I've seen amazing transformations in both physical and mental aspects. At the same time I know that many get injured and I have also had a teacher injure me in the past, but that will happen in any activity where the teacher isn't properly trained. What I'm trying to say is - yoga teachers: get more training in areas where you're lacking. Different schools will have a different focus so if your first training was with school that was more esoteric for example and less focused on physical practice, anatomy and alignment, then this is where you need to get more education, and vice versa. Yoga practicioners: it takes a lot of searching to find the right teacher but in the end it is worth it. A knowledgeable teacher will approach the practice progressively, with correct anatomical alignment and sequenceing, adjusted always to the audience and its ability and in a loving way - making suggestions but always encouraging you to listen to your body and develop the inner teacher. They will recognizing the student's optimal alignment on each day as it changes - it's alive, organic, and approach it accordingly. I believe that yoga has so much to offer and it is really a pity that the standard for becoming a teacher isn't higher and then people have bad experience when they could be life changing.

Your video is like a fresh air. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I don't like teaching yoga in a group because of the reasons you listed in this video... I totally agree that teaching yoga or any fitness is a LOT of REASPONSIBILITY not just for your body, but for other people's bodies... KNOWLEDGE of ANATOMY and KINSIOLOGY is a MUST. I prefer on-on-one sessions, where I spend more time with the person... And even then, it's so individual and it totally depends on person's anatomy... Great video. Thank you!!! Really love and resonate with this. A lot of people are hesitant to say what you’re saying but I definitely agree. I have a very similar story as yours with practicing the other aspects of yoga - meditation, breath, yamas & niyamas etc. and the asanas came much later. Fast forward, have been practicing yoga for about 10 years and 5 years in martial arts I have continuously found the importance of studying more and more anatomy and physiology and a more evolutionary approach to the physical aspects of yoga (on top of the spiritual practice) and it began to make A LOT more sense. Thank you for sharing this!

I appreciate your opinions on what you have experienced as a yoga instructor and what faults you see in the yoga teacher training certification. Being a yoga instructor myself, I do have some questions:
    - why were you being told how to structure your yoga classes? You speak on being told to teach certain postures that you didn't feel comfortable with, but I have always had free reign on the entire construction of my yoga classes. If there are any poses I am unsure of or don't want to practice I continue my studies on it or just refrain from teaching it altogether.
    - If you have read many ancient yogic books, then you must know yoga was not brought into the US until the 1970s. While this was 50 years ago, do you feel that we could have the accurate scientific knowledge behind the benefits/effects in the body after only that amount of time? Yoga has been around being taught in the East since at least 2700 BC, so I feel this is not a fair argument for us to truly have accurate data for the long-term effects of yoga in the Western Hemisphere. Many feel anxious at the thought of Eastern science as well, so this is also an important point to consider.
    - do you offer different variations or child-pose "breaks" for students in the classes you had taught? I know you mentioned asking students if they had any injuries that may hinder them in their practice (as every yoga instructor should do) but as you also stated, many who attend may feel self-conscious and choose not to disclose. Did you keep this fact in mind and offer props for different variations of your poses, or offer students the option to not participate in certain poses at all? I try to make sure and inform students that they have this option as well as incorporating props into my practice as well.
    - while I agree that there is a lacking of education of anatomy in yoga teacher training, I do think there should be a sense of duty in each instructor to continue their yoga education daily, whether it be through physical practice or researching information. If you did not have the passion for yoga and knew the amount of education it required, why did you continue despite feeling your knowledge was lacking? Had you been a practitioner of yoga before taking on the role of yoga teacher training or jump in without previous knowledge?
The goal of yoga should be to achieve Brahman (Enlightenment) through practicing the eight branches of yoga simultaneously while staying present in our day to day lives. It seems your experience with the asana (postures) was not intertwined with the Yamas and Niyamas causing it to suffer. Thank you for giving your experience on your yoga journey and giving some insight to the parts of yoga that are not often discussed.

I totally agree with everything you said. My first red flag watching this video was him saying he was "not passionate" about it like some people. I personally choose to practice and to teach because I'm so passionate and I think it can help others. I agree with him about the lack of anatomy knowledge among many. When I went to Yoga training I knew way more than most of the students there, but I also have a personal training cert as well as some prior education in nutrition which gave way to anatomy and physiology classes.

@@pulse3554 the same can be said for Buddhism or Jainism. If there is an acknowledgment and respect to the culture in which it was created and used and a continuous search of knowledge in that practice I dont find that to be appropriation. People in the world are hurting for something more than prescribed and recreational drugs to find what we commonly like to call “God” in this life. So many feel hopeless and that life has no meaning. How wonderful it is to share the art of yoga with those individuals-Hindu or not-to give them some relief in their hurt and pain, to give them a community welcoming them with open arms and to learn how they can feel good in their skin again. I will continue to do my studies on the history and culture of yoga, but i will not assume that sharing the gift of mindfulness, community, and respect for others and self is in any way harmful to the world. Yoga teacher trainings across the board are notorious for not only skimming lightly over anatomy, which is ironic since almost all yoga classes are 99% Asana, and the anatomy lessons in yoga teacher trainings are usually presented as one-size-fits-all, and do not account for the almost infinite individual variety of human bodies. Just look around, and it's obvious that no one actually looks like the "model human" presented in anatomy books. We are all very differently shaped, & sized, and this of course affects which asanas are easy or difficult, and like you said, which asanas are perhaps not even beneficial for us. Most teachers are not trained to recognize this and and instead taught that we all just need to practice more and "work harder" or be "more dedicated" and that whole "do your practice and all is coming" nonsense will somehow magically make us all slim, glowing and able to sit in lotus posture. I appreciate you speaking up about this. Thank you.

Some people are naturally more flexible than others from what I've read and so I don't think any person should be made to do things that don't feel right for their bodies. What really turned me off was the mass-marketing of yoga clothing and such. At one point yoga was being used in a commercial to sell kitty litter.

Hallo. Great to know you. First thing I noticed is "yoga teacher". To be honest the title should be asana and breathing instructor not yoga teacher. People don't understand the difference between both. Losing weight is not just about cardio. It's can happen through any form of exercises definitely asanas are one of them. It's not about burning calories it's about initiating body's mechanism to use fat reserves. A steady state of breathing and required amount of tension in muscles while holding asanas will help alot. We can activate the adipose tissues in the body as they are connected with the nerves to central nervous system. Cardio will be the last thing weightlifting can help alot. Even a relaxation in savasan and allowing the parasympathetic state to get activate will reduce the chronic stress and body will be ready for the repair mechanism. Cardio will actually increase stress and the person will eventually fail. You should change that advice in your video which is still dangerous. The danger is not the system is the person who is using it actually. Speaking from experience. Millions of people entitle themselves as Asana practitioners and yoga teachers without being able to practice them alone with deep connection on various aspects their inner architecture. They practice in the group and teach for the group vanish in the group. Yoga cannot be practiced like this for long. To understand these practices you should know the periods in which this tools are invented and the purposes behind. If these basic things are taken care one can help others in bring a little relaxation to the fellow human beings to understand themselves better. Just basic observation of ourselves deeply. Even touching a plant observing how much pressure is good for it and what will break it can help someone to guide other. It requires a depth in mental state and a keen observation. At the end of the day you should take responsibility for what you chose not blame on others I was a not doing critical thinking back then all that stuff will not help. Even now you are giving a bad advice with all the critical thinking. Have you really started observing what you are saying?

Being a yoga instructor myself I was so surprised, if not disappointed or even shocked about that weird approach to yoga that you experienced. One of the most essential things that I teach my students is that they always always should listen to their own body (feeling). I do not consider yoga postures as a contest, as something you have to achieve, no matter what. Discipline or stamina might be good but to put pressure on yourself and force your body into a posture which does not feel good, is certainly harmful.
During my teacher training - which was 16 years ago - I realized that you have to develop a good amount of intuition what is appropriate for your participants and what is not. Never follow a rigid pattern. In some of my classes there were students in their 70s or even 80s - and asanas have to be adjusted to this age group, of course. Science is not that important to me, but to be in touch with my participants and to feel what they need.

Yoga is not fitness and it has nothing to do with burning fat and feeling knee pain ... and it is definitely your responsibility to decide what is correct to teach and how. I believe that like everything there is always room for improvement. If you didn't feel ready to teach, why did you do it? Yoga is based on respect and truth, it seems that you have not respected yourself, forcing yourself to do something you did not believe in, or did not feel ready to do. For me the mistake was yours not of the system ..... It is also your responsibility to research if the TTC is done by a competent teacher or not. I am happy that you have finally found your way to your truth and stopped teaching, but personally I think that discriminating against yoga entirely for your personal experience is a little excessive ... however I agree with you that most of the schools around are of very low quality and that "yoga industry" has NOTHING to do with yoga. Great video. Yoga is absolutely one of the least effective ways to get flexible, be spiritual or relax. Most yoga instructors have little to no understanding of what the body actually needs to be healthy or stress free or fit. I've been an exercise therapist for 23 years and when I started doing yoga about 3 years into my career (for my own health goals) I realized how cultish and elitist and just physically wrong it is. I left studio practice shortly after starting and just practiced online with various well known yogis and that was o.k. but only because I knew exactly how to modify every single sequence and every pose because of my functional training background. Most yoga instructors have zero clue how to modify anything for their students. After doing a ton of research more recently I also learned that the yoga brought here around the 60s is really just a form of European calisthenics that hardly resembles the yoga that originated in India. This is why I also do not teach yoga but I do incorporate the most useful poses into bodyweight workouts that help tons of people get fit, healthy and relieve stress. Nobody in America teaches actual yoga that is a fact!

The physical part of yoga emerged only in the 20th century. King of Aundh's The 10 Point Way to Health introduced the exercise Surya Namaskar. Surya Namskar before that was only a religious ritual where people prostrate to the east in prayer. It was not seen even as yoga then. The guru of Paramahansa Yogananda used the practice of 18th century Hatha yogis who used to do aerobics to entertain travelers to create nearly 200 asanas( Hatha yogis had only 20-50 asanas) to entertain Oreintalists who came to India seeking "Eastern Wisdom". He and his disciple made a lot of money out of it. It is what they call Yoga Capitalism. Yoga as a meditation is a good distraction and helps to calm your mind but the rest of it is purely pseudoscience. You could get into serious injuries practicing it.

I thik this is where the claim for weight loss might be coming from

You can lead by example you know that. Btw, i can burn fat only by meditation. I think you didn`t took the spiritual journey also, you took notes and words in your mind only.
A Yoga teacher first is a student, for himself, and only after he feels he can teach what he knows and pass it forward he/she will do that.

There's waaay too much hype around yoga. Hardly anyone, since the "community" is filled with hysterical groupies, makes a point that it can result in..negative structural side effects. Don't get me wrong, yoga can do a lot of good but personally I prefer another approach, like qigong. Especially the more static practices like da jin fa and zhan zhuang. Whereas yoga ( the relative modern practices like hatha and asjtanga) tends to force from outside to the within, qigong and zhan zhuang do the opposite and much more naturally. Same result though except.....less to zero risk on injurie or misalignment. As an example, if you understand the workings of a simple yet profound exercise like ba duan jin, you'll get overall better results without any risk of overdoing the physical structure. Especially the yoga groupies don't seem to understand that practices like asjtanga are quite modern, put together somewhere around 1930-ish. In terms of proven reliability and safety they're nowhere near other practices that stood the times since looong before. In terms of Indian yoga, vinyasa practices like the four tibetans and dand baitak are much older and proven healthy. And things like pole standing, well...I'm not saying Lucy did it but...Me personally, when asked what I do to keep fit, I just answer: I walk and stand. Not a soul who knows what I mean. Doesn't matter. As long as I know what's good for me... And trust me, I know. I broke my back in three places in a horror crash three years ago. I'm not supposed to be able to walk at all and yet.. So, I really do know how certain yoga asanas can put a lot of strain and do more damage than good.

Don’t see yoga as a spiritual discipline but as a kind of physiotherapy. There are schools like Iyengar who strictly follow physical preconditions of the scholar and are extremely attentive to the preconditions of human body in general. So critical thinking includes to go into detail and to differentiate and not generalise. So I would agree with you to warn about yoga styles or gurus whose arguments are not based on physics or are let’s say obscure.

Hay, quick thought that's sort of unrelated but... Have you ever stopped to wonder WHY Atheists DON'T WORSHIP SPACE AS A CREATION GOD? I mean, think about that one logicly for a moment. When I was 16 years old, I LOVED SCIENCE CLASS and I even read my science book for FUN. Biology and geology were FASCINATING to me and I read a TONE of sections on both subjects. Biology stated that to be classified as a living being you needed brain cells or cells period. If anything lacked cells it was considered "nonliving." Rocks for example didn't have cells. They were made of atoms and molecules only, so they weren't alive.
Space too wasn't seen as having cells because it was made of a mysterious non living substance called "Antimatter". As I learned in Astronomy. Atoms were believed to function like "microscopic computers" that ran on a set code unless altered by some outside force, like wind or animals. These "computers" NEVER CHANGED THEIR PROGRAMMING ON THEIR OWN. This was why rocks stayed still and never changed shape unless an outside force moved or cracked them. Like a person picking up the rock and carrying it someplace else.
All of this made sense to me and sounded highly scientific. But then I found "The Big Bang Theory" and "Evolution" and they DID NOT MATCH UP WITH THE REST OF THAT BOOK AT ALL. One sounded like "mythology" and the other like "magic". Evolution COMPLETELY IGNORING The BIOLOGICAL ELEMENTS of INNER BREADING. Making it look like lizards could have LIVE BIRTHS with mammals, biased on the OBSCURE IDEAS that everything was "related". But that's a tangent for another day.
Getting back on topic, simply put, The Big Bang either claimed that "The universe created itself because it had to, or it was a giant computer program that was programed to create life." Meaning in that first definition it was THINKING LIKE A LIVING BEING. BUT! Anti matter DIDN'T CONTAIN CELLS or BRAIN CELLS to allow space to THINK. So my FIRST QUESTION was "How can a non living things think unless its SPIRITUAL?
The definition of a creation god is commonly something like this. "A being who created the universe and life, by choice, instruction of other gods, or by accident that people worship." Like Ra from Egypt who created the Earth and mankind according to some ancient Egyptians. And while I know no one is worshiping SPACE for "The Big Bang" the REST of that stuff DOSE APPLY HEAR. "The Universe created life." "Creation gods create life." So even if space WAS ALIVE, then wouldn't it count as a CREATION GOD? That's scientifically ridiculous!
And don't even get me started on the other "Big Bang" idea that says space was programed like a COMPUTER to make life. That goes against the stuff we know about how NONE LIVENING THINGS CAN'T PROGRAM THEMSELVES. Computers need a HUMAN TO BUILD AND PROGRAM THEM to funchion. WE chose how the computers function biased on what WE program into them.
We can also change the programming of atoms and molecules by means of atom splitting, chemistry and other methods I forgot how their done. But again WE HUMANS have to make those atoms CHANGE because they cant change their own programming on their own.
AI's even require US to build them FIRST before they can funchion. So my second question is "If space is a huge computer WHO PROGRAMED IT?" And going back to that "Creation god" definition, wouldn't the programer of space COUNT AS A CREATION GOD TOO?
Frankly from my understanding THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GODLESS WORLD. Science CAN'T EXPLAIN EVERYTHING in a FULLY SCIENTIFIC MANNER or this "theory" wouldn't point to "A CREATION GOD OF SOME SORT". So if SCIENTISTS BEST THEORY LEADS TO A SPIRITUAL BEING WHO MADE US ALL, then why think SCIENCE is ALL theirs is in our world? This doesn't seem logical to me. But that leads to the question of WHAT GOD CREATED US? Because some god had to with THAT in mind!

@@Rokasleo Face shots with occasional inserts of clips from your life or stock clips to illustrate your message is the best approach IMO. And please fix the focus hunting on the face shots. It is even more distracting than the side shots. If you are not ready to upgrade the camera, simply stop down the aperture, which should help the camera to stay in focus. Wide open aperture dramatically reduces the “in focus” distance (sometimes to just a few millimetres), so every time you move your head the camera has to re-focus. This effect only increases at closer distances, like you have on the front shots. Stop down the aperture and you will fix focus hunting. The drawback Is that you will lose the “bokeh” (background blur). Experiment with different aperture settings to achieve some blur, if that’s what you want, and to reduce focus hunting to a minimum.

Test the results before you record the actual vlog to make sure you like how it looks (particularly that you are not out of focus for whatever reason). It might be challenging to pre-focus if you are alone, you need to place something where your face will be and focus on that object. Then you need to remember not to make big moves back and forth, but I don’t thing you do during actual recording, so shouldn’t be a problem. While the claim about targeted fat loss is absolutely a myth I must say some things that may seem psudo scientific have from anacdoldel personal experiance proven to be absolutly true. I have had otherworldly experiances thanks to yoga that go beyond feeling well. If you take concepts such as bhakti(chanting and yoga of devotion) and karma (yoga of action) as well as chakras more seriously you can observe them first hand. In science this is known as Ras or reticular activating system. If you do not observe that the chakra is activated it will not happen. To see that a chakra is activated a big focus is on mindfulness and awareness is necessary so we can observe such things happening. Once I got deep into yoga I could perceive things differently (third eye) and became filled to the brim with joy. I have all these benifits as well.
