  • Tony Robbins is the king of the self help gurus, but his methods are more dangerous than you think. In this video as a former self-help guru myself I share my personal opinion about Tony Robbins as well as looking at some of the key controversies.
    For more videos exposing the flaws of self-help culture click here: • A Confession By A Form...
    00:00 Intro
    02:56 Why I Initially Was Fascinated by Tony Robbins
    09:07 Why Tony Robbins Lack Credibility
    15:02 How I Became Disillusioned With Tony Robbins
    19:49 The Controversy Behind Tony Robbins
    29:36 Summary
    For years I used to have a lack of critical thinking myself. I used to believe many things which had little evidence or truth behind them. These beliefs led me to decisions which did not turn out to my favor. Eventually I discovered critical thinking and changed my life for the better. Now I choose what I believe in with much more care. Make better, more informed decisions and enjoy the results. Yet it doesn’t take much time to see that many people still fail to separate true information from false. That’s why I created the Practical Critical Thinkers channel.
    If you are looking for a critical thinking channel - look no more and let's create a culture of practical thinking together!
    In this channel you will learn what is critical thinking, various critical thinking skills, find critical thinking exercises, learn how to use critical thinking in a debate, learn about the best critical thinking books out there, find critical thinking tutorials what results a lack of critical thinking has and much more.

    I'm the opposite, I started thinking Tony Robbins was a joke. My mother is an educated therapist, I've seen many therapists over the years. I never found any of it helpful.
    I stumbled on a video of Tony's at my lowest and clicked on it for a laugh, waiting to think it would all be a joke. But while what he said wasn't new (he has said that before he gets this information from people smarter than him) but the way he presented it I heard it and understood it for the first time. Since discovering him my life has done a 180 and even those like my mother acknowledge that they have never seen me so happy and doing so well so fully support the events I attend and programs I've joined. Is he harsh? Sometimes but I've needed it.
    Also I haven't finished the video but have you seen the Stanford University on the science of Tony Robbins?

      Well done. Even "qualified" psychological therapists are not proven techniques. They analyse a few and test out on many then a few years later, the techniques change again. They (psychologic theorists) are often in it for status and getting recognition for there own legacy.

      Most parts of BOK or practice of NLP isn't dubious. They are powerful, but charlatans with free access make it questionable. I used to practice and teach NLP over two decades ago and so much OWE to NLP...and I would like to review and upgrade my knowledge and personal expertise on the topic despite the that most of my multiple educations are pretty relevant to the foundation NLP stands on.

    fair video man; I started reading "self helpish" books about a year or two ago, but I started with David Goggins, Rich Roll, and Susan David, and there is definitely a fundamental difference between an accomplished individual (Either in sports, or science, or whatever) sharing what they have learned with data or literal badass achievements, and someone like Tony Robbins, who I have also read. I think its wise to stay away from motivational speakers like Robbins because he has perfected the art of leveraging his natural charisma to sell you whatever it is you want-- he's a master salesman, and that is to be commended at least at face value; but in terms of moral integrity, or value, you're probably right, its dangerous because so many people (myself included) are easily swayed by charisma, and he could be doing serious harm as well as good.

    I agree with most of your points and I have also been disillusioned with TR after diving into his work a lot in the last few years and realizing he's just as messed up as anyone else. Many things didn't sit right in my gut with him. To play devils advocate though I don't think all the points here are necessarily true. Considering only the people with degrees from a university as legitimate authorities is not necessarily wise because those institutions themselves are full of corruption and superiority. We blindly assume science and academia to be the ultimate authority and that's not necessarily true (but it is especially wise not to believe self-help gurus who claim to be experts without ANY real training to show as you're saying 😉.) Also I do agree with Tony that SOME women use the Me Too Movement for attention and power (maybe the women in the clip was a liar as well only people there would know 🤷‍♂️.) There are as many toxic and narcissistic women as there are men and it would be ignorant to say otherwise in my opinion. But again many women are honest and have been victimized and should have their stories told and the perpetrators brought to justice. It's all about the context and we should take everything we hear with a critical mind. Even that article is coming from a certain agenda and I wouldn't trust a lot of what Buzz Feed says either because they are known for their own biases. I wish it were black and white but there are too many conflicting points to consider and taking an extreme stance on any side never gets to the full truth of things.

Like you I was attracted to his kool-ade, although there were elements that never sat well with me. Relatively recent stories that have come out dramatically increased that unease for me, seeing and hearing him bully and manipulate vulnerable people was the final straw. That an unqualified image manager has been able to gain so much wealth, fame, power and cult-like status is terrifying and fits with Lord Acton's famous quote: "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely". My dad gifted me the Tony Robbins book “Money: Master the Game” as a very early adult and even at that time, I found that he was not backed by any credible data, science, or research. Rather it felt like another privileged white male flexing their wealth and giving the struggling working class people, who are likely sole-purchasers of the book, some goofy one-liners to solve all of their problems. I don’t think he does anything wrong, and his teachings have helped me with some things. I listen to several people for inspiration, but it doesn’t mean that I take everything they say as absolute truth. I take what resonates with me and let go of what doesn’t. For people who are truly connected within, none of the mentors will be able to do harm. At the end of the day, wisdom is within us, and we just need to take time, connect, and listen.
    Also, not everything can be proven by science and still helps. I just think the author of the video struggles with his own life because if he didn’t, he would led by example and instead of criticizing others, help people to truly heal. Emotionally healthy and secure people don’t need to put others work down…

    Long time fan-- I think every good thing that Robbins has said was in Personal Power (AKA Personal Power II) and three tools had a very profound and direct effect on how I feel and how I take action. However these tools are seen by others as obvious and unhelpful. What's more, my friends say some tools had effects on them that I found to be obvious. My conclusion is that most of us have missed a few steps in our upbringings. A lot of us had shitty parents and had to figure this whole "good life" thing out on our own and programs like Robbins break down the process in a way that can be helpful. I could frankly do without the inspiration, hope and enthusiasm altogether-but I know that is something I have that others lack- so I will always have to deal with it. That said- even as a very skeptical critical thinker Robbins has helped me in some very concrete ways- so much so that I have given his works countless chances juuuuust in case he has more tools that I can use (has not happened yet)

    Although I know the name, I am not familiar with Tony Robbins’ teaching/preaching, but if he really claims that he possesses some sort of special knowledge or skill which he doesn’t have, then it makes him a charlatan by definition. But what if he does give a disclaimer that whatever he says may or may not help depending on a person? What if his method is deliberately built purely on a placebo effect, which we know does work in reality on a certain percentage of population? And all his act, big show, big emotions are just necessary ingredients for the placebo effect to kick in? And if his make believe theatrical performance can still help five, ten, fifteen people out of a hundred purely on some miraculous abilities of our own bodies, just like a placebo, does it really make him a dangerous fraud or, in fact, a genius? Just trying to play some devil’s advocate here...

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  3 роки тому +2

      That's some good devil's advocacy there and I see what you mean. Even if, let's say, it's true - I don't think he puts much effort into disclaiming himself. What usually self help gurus do - they disclaim the practitioner of their methods as the sole responsible person whether it will work or not. Also, if what he offers works on 10-15% of people, the more important aspect is that there are also at least 10-15% who could have the nocebo effect or actual direct damage to their physical or mental health. If that's the case, is it really worth sacrificing the health of some, so that Maybe some would benefit by a placebo effect? I think such a method is not honest and too risky, even if it works for some.

This brings me back to the conclusion I've made before: the power of rhetoric surpasses facts and knowledge itself; rhetoric encompasses all the ways we acquire information. So, I believe he is right not because I'm acknowledging the accuracy of his content, but because his manner of speaking makes me feel open to accepting it, making it seem reasonable, even though the truth doesn't necessarily reside in the facts themselves

    I think the whole new age culture, which Robbins is apart of, gets you to look outside of yourself. The real power is always within you - if you access your own heart space, that’s where you connect to your soul. That’s the only thing you need in this life, yourself! Too many ‘spiritual teachers’ and ‘gurus’ are too readily available and making loads of money in the process - they should all be saying ‘the answers lie within, access your own heart space’, they wouldn’t sell any books, any large venues, any course etc. Call me cynical but it’s the truth 💜 xx

    "Don't be a follower - be a student!" (Jim Rohn)... When you go through any self-help publication or work, you must critically analyse it and see what works, or doesn't work, for you. Then YOU DECIDE what to do or not to do. My opinion is that you first must define what SUCCESS means to YOU, and then use or not use the tools available, or adapt them to your purpose. Do I think that paying $2,000 for a Tony Robbins event is worth it? No, but that's me! No one is forcing me to buy the ticket - I DECIDE. Do I think that his earlier books (Awaken the Giant Within; Unlimited Power) are good value? Absolutely! But again, that's just me! Always, when one reads books like these... "don't be a follower - be a student!"

    I did the same thing my dad was the same way and always wanted to save people and help people, All the best help is in your heart. All the life coaching in this country is such a joke. You should always look into your own heart. I am the type of person who also goes all out and wants to do things to the best of my ability. I never understood the lack of drive in this country. These gurus are more confusing than being helpful. ": what works for one person doesn't work for another". These are snake oil salesmen. They usually have no formal education.

    I really think what you said about the delusion of the thing that doesn't sit well with you even if you like 99% of what someone saying that 1% that doesn't make you feel good probably means that more than 99% of it is good. The moment you notice the actual delusion that you've fallen for in someone it's in time to re think and check yourself. I think it's really interesting how you jump completely into these things and then come out twice is ready to deal with the world every time. I think that's your superpower much love

    Tony Robbins is just a man not infallible. And he likes big events because he likes to get people emotionally engaged. Such can mislead. Yet I find he speaks a lot of sense when I listen to him. His ideas are clearly presented and practical. One should neither accept nor reject based on the package, but evaluate the content to see what merit it has.

    • @Rokasleo
      @Rokasleo  3 роки тому +1

      I agree that it part of the responsibility falls to us to examine the material we get. But usually what self help gurus do (and that's what I remember Tony speaking of back in the day when I listened to him), they usually give very basic advice, which makes sense, but has little to no guarantee that any of it will work in the wrong run. Instead if one takes a science based book about human development you will usually get few tips, but a lot of information on which you can change your perspective and approach to certain aspects of your life and undoubtedly change your life, since usually you are presented with information rigorously tested by scientific means and thus highly reliable

    The channel's name is critical thinking, but the way you presented your thoughts in the video not very convincing as I see it. I don't know much about Tony, heard his name, seen him few times in some interview videos, that's it. You have a much larger knowledge of the subject, so I expected the video to give examples of what works and what doesn't work. Concrete examples of his advice, and how you tried to implement it in your life, and it didn't work, or it didn't work for others. But in the video is only vague statements that his stuff doesn't work.
    5:15 Tony fixed mental patient in less than 1 day? Is it even possible? People go to therapy for years to fix their problems, maybe only with use of some psychedelic stuff, in the altered brain state, but If Tony claims that he did , that's a huge red flag. (Maybe he didn't claim that, but it's only your interpretation of what you've seen)
    9:30 No formal education. Doesn't meany anything, there's plenty of knowledgeable people with no education, and there's plenty of people who have education degree, but no knowledge of anything.
    21:20 The audio recording is heavily edited, the woman's answers are muted, there's no background context to accurately judge this conversation. Even if he's being a dick there, there's no people in the world who wasn't ignorant, or rude at some point. He's just stating his opinion on the situation that the woman described, he maybe completely wrong here, it doesn't make him evil or anything.
    24:40 He doesn't agree with some #MeToo allegations, understandable from his point of view, he probably gets tons of attention from people, and some of them are out there to get him, so he's biased in that sense. Maybe later he acknowledges that bias, and apologize. Whether he's sincere or not can't really know for sure. We need to be more aware that not all women are victims, just because a man is being accused, doesn't mean that he's guilty. Without proper investigation we shouldn't pitchfork people based on some rumors. Don't we forget the situation with Johnny Depp? He was accused of being an abuser, but apparently sometimes he was a victim. We don't know what really happened there.

    He got a lot of celebrity endorsement which as you say counts for nothing if it cannot be replication in a scientific way. Only to betray her with an intern.
