NEW BMW i4 M50 Review - The First All Electric M Car !
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 гру 2021
- The eagerly anticipated BMW i4 M50 is the first all electric M Car, boasting a twin motor setup with 544hp and 795Nm of torque. The 0-62 dash takes just 3.9 seconds and a full charge delivers a range of up to 315 miles. The sticker price for a base model i4 M50 starts at £63,905 and the car I reviewed in this video was priced at £71,575.
The interior is dominated by the new sweeping infotainment screen, making the car feels new and fresh on the inside whilst keeping the BMW familiarity customer will expect.

Actually it’s not a BEV from the ground up, the platform is the same as ICE car but modified in a clever way. It’s pretty amazing how they can do it all in the same factory. BMW is bringing a new platform in few years but what I heard it’s going to be for ICE and BEV just like this one but better and probably lighter. I think this the way to go, BMW can sell anything the public wants and phase out ICE cars in a natural way. Mercedes is going in an opposite way and time will tell if that’s successful or not. For my eyes the new EQ line up looks awful, too bloaty. BMW’s like this still look like a RWD car should look like. 👍
I came here to make this comment 😂
Not that amazing. Its just a GKN drivetrain badly packaged into a fossil car. Thats why you cant open the bonnet and why it has a transmission tunnel through the middle of the car.
@@EVMYT I don’t know what GKN is but of course it’s a compromise turning an ice car into an EV. What I have seen, the transmission tunnel is full of EV stuff so it’s not wasted space. And the fact that it’s based on the RWD platform means it has traditional RWD proportions, which to my eyes looks a lot better than MB’s bloaty EQ line up of EV’s. But I think Bmw has done it better than most and they don’t have to spend billions on developing a EV only platform just yet. On the i4 you can actually open the bonnet but there is not much inside, just a plastic cover. And no frunk, not even a small one even though there is room for it…
There is possibly another way to look at BMW’s seemingly haphazard packaging of electrical items under the bonnet. Equipment that is most likely to eventually need servicing in the future is positioned with working space around it and potentially easier access than in a tightly packaged Tesla for example. You do give up the ambiguous ‘Frunk’ however, but from someone who regularly works under the bonnet of ICE vehicles, I’m OK with that. Many people comment that electric vehicles are maintenance free, but these electric vehicles still have cooling systems, HVAC systems, Inverters along with a host of other items that will eventually need servicing and I for one would happily prefer to have a bit of elbow room under the bonnet.
Another good review Pete. Look forward to you having one for longer soon
Fingers crossed!
Definitely one to watch and look forward to the longer review.
Cheers Nick 👍
Great video Ped! Forgot about the audio issues the second you floored it on the test drive. I suppose the benefit of driving it is that you don't have to look at it. Lovely car apart from the 'arse imprint on an old couch cushion' grille. BMWs always seem to have fairly cramped interiors, I always assumed it was to help keep the 50:50 weight distribution they're so proud of.
70K…..It’s an absolute bargain price for a car of this class. Absolutely love the grille, it still looks like a RWD M car. Great vid👍
Thanks 👍
Yes for full EV and this package. Steal
Appreciate your honest review PP for what seemed to be a short time with the Beemer. Would like to know your thoughts if you ever get a chance to test it for a longer time. Cheers.
This is the first time I have watched one of your videos just as it was released
Yay 😀
3rd comment 👏👏👏
Nice one Pedro, short but pretty concise short review , hope you get for a week or 2 ,have a great weekend everyone, 😊🎄🎅one week to go and this car in my stocking would fit the bill 👌
Hey Pete, In the US I currently own a 2019 440i Convertible, which replaced my 2015 435i Convertible. This was my first BMW and my 42 automobile I've owned in 50 years of driving. Most of these were convertibles. Last June I placed a pre-order for a i4 M50. I have test driven several electrics over the past year as an electric will be my next and likely all future cars. In your review of the i4 M50 you hit the nail on the head regarding why I want an electric. Instant torque, quietness, smoothness, curved display, HUD and most importantly, that 1 pedal drive. The first electric I ever drove was an i3. No one warned me about the aggressive brake regeneration that provides 1 pedal drive. It took only about a mile to master. I will never buy an electric without this feature. I'm glad that it impressed you as well. Since I have never driven an i4 (I've only seen one up close at a BMW coffee/cars event in September. They wouldn't let anyone drive it.) I was curious if they carried this feature over from the i3 to the new line of I cars. The other major feature of the car, which you did not comment on, was an opening sunroof. Coming from as many convertibles that I have owned and knowing that the last car any manufacturer would electrify would be a convertible, I at least must have an opening sunroof. Most electrics today just have fixed panoramic roofs. I'm just waiting for MY test drive before I place the factory order. I will never buy a car without driving it first. Thanks for the review.
Good vid Pete. Love the i4 M50 and I must admit, I’m very tempted to trade in the M340i for one, after watching that. Love the acceleration noise, it’s like something out of Blade Runner!
I love my M340i, but I have the i4 M50 on order. The world is going electric. We need get off oil and gas. This is my sacrifice. Somehow I don't think it will hurt much.
I enjoyed watching the Video. I like the Paint Colour and the Interior Design
Fantastic car, looking forward to getting mine delivered June/July 22
Pete, what can I say ? I actually drove the i4 40 last weekend. What a car .
I wouldn't like to admit it, but after driving that car, I think electric is the way to go so much so that I sold my 330i back to them now i have a bit of saving to do and no car lol , and that instrument panel is pure magic.
That grill doesn't look that bad in real life.
I was waiting eagerly for you to review this model 👍🏼
Wow at last a proper practical car that looks great and is not a SUV or crossover, love it.
Its very satisfying when companies bring out flash new expensive cars that I have no desire for. Next!
Great video, and the car looks fantastic.
Thanks!
Looks like a great car. Thanks for the positive i3 comments. Love driving mine daily.
Great quick review Ped. Could you fade-in the volume of your end of vid music because I've noticed in couple of recent vids that we can't really hear that you are saying.
OK. Thanks for the feedback 👍
Hi Pete love the content as usual
Like your new glasses
I have transitions axtra active by esselor
Fantastic not cheap but they go very dark and they do go dark in the car Fantastic
What's your lenses
Tim
Are the side mirrors heated? Helps for winter driving so they are not fooled up or covered with snow.
Great review that dash is huge 👍
Sure is 😂
Great review. Yep I love this. We have to move into the new electric world, great way to start.
Yes we do
Great video Pete. Apologies, I've been away from the channel for a while. I like the overdubbed info sections you've started to do and as always, you always seem to answer the questions that I have swirling around my head that never get picked up on other car videos.
It looks like BMW have nicked Mercedes' double screen format and massively improved it. Cabin wise, this now looks to be the EV benchmark.
They are a result of only having 2 hours with the car but add a bit of variety. Glad to hear you like them 👍
Nice review. I'd much rather have one of those over a Model 3 performance. And it's got a hatchback. Winner!
Probably better put together I’d imagine 👍
Stunning car in every way and a great review there Pete. Would be good to get your verdict on a long term review of it. See if you can get one in Portimao Blue, best colour in my opinion!
Stunning in every way? Have you seen any of the exterior?
Looking great shame about Audio but great content cheers Pete
Great little look at this car . Absolutely adore the colour but then I might be biased as my new car will be the same colour 😉
Peter’s in his element, lovely car, can shift when required or even as a whim!!! Love the colour don’t mind the grill it’s just the way it should look. You need this Pete stuff the Tesla get a B M W is won’t let water into the boot as I’ve heard Tesla,s have been known to do!!! Don’t quote me though, I have no proof just here’say not admissible in a court of law😁 super video keep em coming👍👍👍🚘🚘🚘
Great to see the hatch opening on a 4door. An IKEA sofa is definitely going in that!
I agree with you about the I3 Pete I think it is a great proposition. Personally I would like them to make the I8 all electric as that still looks way better than 99 percent of things on the road. I would like them to make an electric 3 series estate as I only like my pups in estate cars!
You had fun in this one .
Yep 👍
I fall in to the "Never going to like the grille" school of thought...
I hate the massive touch screen/iPad in Teslas, but the dash in this BMW is nice, I wish it was more integrated on to the dash surround, or structure.
I still think everything touch screen is not the best idea, things like AC/climate are better with dials.
Apart from the above, I like it, when the prices become more sensible and model ranges increase across all manufacturers, then the electric future is looking interesting and really good.
As you say, may as well get used to it. Its happening!
Another good video, Pete👍👍
This could be the replacement for my 6 series GT with that range, not quite the 700 I get from a tank of diesel though. Just need to sort out the price now. Great review Pete.
Fantastic video Pete. Had my eye on the i4 M50, up against the etron GT to replace my B9 S4 and this is the video I've been waiting for as a comparison to your GT one a while ago. The numbers are more painful wallet wise on the etron GT and already some decent lease rates projected on the M50. From a fellow B9 S4'er, a piece of string question, would you take the etron GT over the i4 M50 to replace an S4? Hoping to drive one in the new year once they hit the BMW dealerships as demo cars.... Keep up the great work!
Demo cars are in the uk right now - although slots fully booked, my test drive is in two weeks
@@gothmog2441 Yeah my local dealership had one that is being rotated through each dealership in their network. Should be back early in the new year.. Enjoy your test drive 👍🏻
E-tron GT would be my pick if I would not have to care about money/cost... but from the price point of view I would go for M50.
@@mho0 Inclined to agree with you Mika
I agree. I want one.
👍
This regenerative braking is akin to driving an automatic correctly. I always get comments when mine goes into service about the lack of pad wear. That colour is gorgeous.
Our fire engines had brake retarders, very good for slowing down!
@@Daniel189HLL was that the driver? 😆 🤣 😂
Regenerative braking in EVs is all wrong. You never get the energy back that it took to get to the speed you were at before braking. Ideally if you lift off the car should coast with no braking and no regen. People should learn to coast sooner and conserve the energy the car already has to cover distance before needing to stop. Only when braking should regen braking actually start and its effect should be relative to how hard the brake pedal is pushed with friction braking only starting when necessary. No increasing regen amount through stupid paddles etc. Use the brake pedal to control the level of regen that we've all been used to for years. They've touted regen braking as something wonderful but they've actually made it into something that is actually wasteful of energy with their implementation.
@@giancola123 ?
@@stevecade857 Regen just requires a different pedal technique - dont lift the foot until necessary and learn to drive smoothly with more distance to vehicles
Hi Ped, after my rant about the BMW IX M50 yesterday, I feel that this is more like it. Still some quirky styling but more acceptable. I agree that the saloons are much better in EV format, and more BMWesque to drive. They need to down spec this car now it give is mass appeal and get the price to under 45k. As you said, you will probably set the car up when you get it and probably never use many features when the novelty wears off. As ever, the real world range is the question? Need to get this tech into 3 series and 1 series if they are still going to follow that format of model range. Looking forward to a full review on this one. 👍😎
I have tried the one pedal driving on my Hyundai Ioniq hybrid, but really not keen on it, like the LKAS I switch it off.
Just wondering do the brake lights come on with the regen braking if it’s so aggressive or is it only when the brakes are applied?
Yes they do. It's mandatory. All EV's have it as soon as a certain delta v slowdown is reached.
It's 100% the EV version of the 4 series Grand Coupé on the outside and inside, it has the elements of what we're expecting the iX to have with that new infotainment/instrument binnacle system.
The one huge problem I'd have with an EV is my exceedingly naughty right foot. Even in this BMW, I think I'd struggle to get 200 miles from it's batteries from 100% fully charged.
However. I do love it. Love the 4 Series and BMW in general.
*_Oh! @_**_9:50_**_ into video. Did anyone notice the way the grey car cuts across the front of the orange/red Ford?_* 8-))... And it wasn't a BMW or Audi ;-))...
grey car wanted to beat the M50 lol sure it was a Jerk in a Merc.
Wow you were on my locality when recording this. Amazing. And I've decided that I need to trade in my Alfa Romeo Giulia QV for an EV and I've decided not the M50 but instead the i4 M Sport version because I need 300 plus range. The M50 is just too heavy, would waste the electrons.
Love this review, shame you didn't have it for longer to really show off its ability!!
I’ll get one for longer soon 👍
This is how the move to BEV has to work. ICE cars that happen to be electric. This will be really popular as a company car, as the last gen 4 series GC was.
It’s not 300+ on the 20inch option wheels they drop the range by about 50 miles
As I have a 330e M Sport I am a huge fan of BMW's. So all I have to say is yes. I want one. I am due a test drive in the New Year, will let you know how I get on... BTW, What was going with your audio fella... I struggled to hear you
beautiful car, beautiful colour.
Thanks 👍
If BMW wanted to make an electric vehicle that looked like an ICE vehicle then they've succeeded. And in an impressive style-over-function grill, the radar transmitter and receiver has to be offset. (1:07) Did they choose the left side of the grill for left-hand-drive markets?
It seems to me that the dashboard has so much going on and the only way is to keep swiping the screen instead of having individual switches of a normal car !
Looks like it would be too easy to be distracted from actually concentrating on the driving of the car,
I don't think I will be getting an electric vehicle anytime soon !😊
had a test drive booked for today but it was a single demo model so 20 mins and lots of people in and out - so cancelled it. Will test drive next year when its a bit calmer. Had a 4 series GC before my current tesla and loved it, so the lower end i4 should be ideal
Fantastic!
Looks smashing, I hope we get them over here. I like it. 11:35 PM 12/18/2021
Great video. Unfortunately la la land for most.
YAY! NOT an Suv..at last! Always liked the look of the 4 series, and with ev power.......very nice!
Hi Ped
Tasty teaser🤗 Look forward to full review if BMW play ball. Personally cannot get to like the grille, would have expected something better. The info screen would have looked better if it were incorporated, and not added at the last moment😬
I ordered an i4 40 M sport. Hopefully I’ll enjoy it almost as much as you did the M50. But I saved almost $10K! And still have most of the packages offered on both.
I love the i4!
It's not build from ground as an EV but seems a great adaptation, weight excepted! A friend bought one and loves it! A premium Model 3P! Another nice review 😉
Interesting ride, just hard to wrap my head around an electric M car….I’m not ready Pete🍻🇨🇦
I ain't an M, it's more of an M lite according to Joe, the full on M-ev is coming later
My 06 650i is still in fine fettle but great job from BMW...stylish and bang on to tempt me.
For an EV car for me it would be either be this or the ix xdrive m50 sport the range on both is pretty good too both great ev cars. Great video thanks.
Morning my friend. Looks very tasty to be honest. Beemer haven’t strayed from what we know. 👍👍👍
Well Sir Pete despite that audio issue, (which didn’t hurt the video in my opinion.) this video is great 👍 I got a laugh with you in the trunk lol. I’d have to say the front end looks good but I’m still not sold on it. Also the interior screen is cool but as a adult with ADHD I’m pretty sure it would distract the crap out of me. All that aside I absolutely love the cars color and wheels!! Last opinion BMW make great cars but there just to expensive for my blood at this time of life.
I love this!! Nice review Pedro. But I do wonder when the price parity will come. I currently own a BMW 435d Gran Coupe. Superb car for the family, and towing the caravan, with enough pep to keep a smile on my face (0-60 in 4.7 secs). A new one would be around the £50k mark. But the equiv i4 is somewhere metween the i4 edrive 40 and the i4 M50. So, I would have to go for the better performing i4 M50, but at £70k?? Won't be any time soon. Shame the edrive40 M Sport isn't of similar performance to the 435d, but unfortunately, for a similar price, it's way slower at 5.7 secs. Come on BIG OEMs. Lets have performance and price parity please!!
Interesting point Nick 👍
He's absolutely right regarding the price point. Currently looking at 4 series ICE, but would love to seriously consider the i4 instead. But £18-20k difference. It's a crazy price gap.
🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻👏🏻, very good review, one of the best I have seen forwards this electric BMW (I4 M50), which to me is the better car. It’s not an M car yet, it’s an M sports car, Front axle is very loose, can’t wait for an M electric car, that’s gonna be so much more awesome !
Beautiful car and like the colour - almost the same hue as the Fiat 500e I collected yesterday. It will sell like hot cakes.
Wow Peter that bmw is absolutely amazing but for me it's a hard choice between the bmw or the Audi e-tron gt for me lol I like them both your a lucky guy ro drive cars like these. I am liking these content videos Peter keep it up mate
Cheers Matthew 👍
I like the car apart from 2 things which one is obviously the front grille and the second is the raised pieces for the exhausts in the rear bumper that don't exist.
Interesting review and nice to see something that looks nice and not a SUV shape.
Whilst watching it, I did see what I think it some poor current driving. I am referring to the video around 9-50 in with a car cutting across 2 lanes of traffic.
Must be an inherent steering fault on those GLE 'coupes', one did the exact same thing to me and a number of others on the M6 this week...
Hmm thinking I saw you in Maidenhead country roads around 9am.....
Ive only just collected my M3 4 weeks ago but already ear marked this as its successor. Im just not sure when!?!.
I wish they would make a 3 or 5 series touring with that engine, would be the perfect car!
Boot seems a good size but quite narrow going through the rear seats with them down.
Hopefully that will come 🤞
i5 and i7 already announced and there will be also an i3 based on 3series...but naming could be different, since an i3 already exists. ;-)
BMW grill is a grower. It jarred at first but I’m starting to get it.
Love it ooowww😀
Strange detail around rear arch
Great video but no point apologising for the dreadful audio. This mic/camera combo simply doesn’t work.
Remember more viewers will switch off for poor audio than poor pictures.
Hi..this might be a strange comparison. But I am considering this against a Kia EV6 GT. The BMW being £150 dearer per month salary sacrifice...what's your thoughts? (knowing that you have drove the EV6) @petrolped
EV6 GT is epic 👌
@@PetrolPed ❤
Going to see it on Monday 🤞
This or I can sell my soul, house, dog and go for a Taycan 4s.
Just had a look at this again, great video as always....but why is the bonnet so long? Why would you waste all that space if it were truly a ‘clean sheet’ EV only design. Opportunity missed, or perhaps the triumph of form over function, the inability to get out of the ICE mindset of what a grand tourer should look like?
The point of a grand tourer is to do long journeys and the only downside of an EV grand tourer is the charging infrastructure and we know what that's like haha! I've always wondered with one foot driving/re-gen braking, does it still activate the brake lights?
@@PhilBaxter Yes I meant this car in this country, UK. I imagine large parts of Europe aren't that good either yet
The thing about the grill is you can’t see it when you’re behind the wheel 😊 Marmite I expect .?
I like it, apart from the grill.
I like the non capacitive buttons on the wheel (take note VW) plus that you don't need to use the touchscreen for everything.
And most importantly i like that it's not an SUV!!
Good review Pete, but it sounds like a futuristic milk float.
You can change the sound it makes in the car via the screen I believe
I guess as long as you shield your eyes everytime you approach from the front..... Its a great piece of technology....
Nice video. I just wish Pete was abit more apologetic about the horrendous sound quality in places. 😚
I put a note on screen, what more do you want 🤷♂️ Unfortunately I knocked the gain setting on my wireless lav mic but didn’t know until after the shoot.
Very nice, much more desirable than a SUV in my opinion. Is there a frunk?
Massive grill thumper teeth 😁 messing with the audio here! fab car
I am not an electric fan but I like it.
Prefer BMW over Merc & Audi , is there an option to pipe in engine sound into the cabin rather than listening to a boring electric motor whir . Nice car but 70+ grande 🤔.
I test drove one along side a model 3 performance. Model three punches harder off the line, but that's it. The BMW pulls harder, has a more comfortable (adaptive) suspension, a better company service record backing it, and a true luxury interior to boot (forget that central screen only non sense). Only complaint I have its the steering feels a little looser than I am used to (coming from 986 boxster daily for 100k miles lol)
Think you've but the nail on the head in previous videos. For 90% of the population who aren't bothered about driving pleasure, EV's are better cars than their ICE equivalent. However what let's them down is the charging structure currently in place.
I was going to buy a 330e but I think I am going to seriously look at the i4. The only thing slightly putting me off is the public charging network but there again, that is going to have to improve before 2030.
It is in the process of being greatly improved Andrew. A large contract has recently ben signed, to increase the UK's number of public charging connections from the present 26'000, to 190'000 by 2030. They will also be fitted with contactless payment, so no more stupid apps.
Thanks PP for a wonderfully entertaining review of a car I could never afford to buy. It is strange though how BMW can build such beautiful cars, I owned an 525 E39 for 10 years which was a great looking car.. but they’ve lost their way IMO as regards exterior design. When talking about ‘electric’ cars PP you sound like a ‘petrol apologetic’? ...You can just say ‘great car’...instead of ‘great electric car’.
I’d really like to see an iX3 M50. The standard iX3 is a little underwhelming compared to its rivals (EQC, iPace, Tesla Y).
I am one of those that still can't get past the front end of the beemer. As for the screen it looks like it is an after thought, I would prefer it to be built into the dash.
If the claimed range is achievable without driving like miss daisy then that is perfectly acceptable, the performance is worthy of the m badge but styling is a little understated. Price is in line with what you would expect to pay for a m car.
'Reasonable' quotes for one of these under company salary sacrifice car scheme at present, actually less than an M3P. Currently mulling over the same performance/charging/build quality considerations as everyone else for a while before I pull the pin on one or the other but not before charging points finally installed at work next year 😇
Very nice I want one but cost to much 👍🏿
Nice car, but nything that can do 0-60mph in 3.9 sec should look a bit more sporty!
No Frunk and a transmission tunnel seems like a half arsed effort. If I have to put up with the extra cost, weight, range penalty and charging inconvenience vs a similar sized ICE vehicle then I want some advantages too ! And packaging is an obvious benefit of EV’s,
I really like the fact that BMW have made a saloon EV, which means Audi and Mercedes are bound to do the same. Still not struck on that grill though....
It's the spitting image of the 4 Series GC isn't it! Needs some more flared arches to be a proper M car!
