Don’t you think we have too many #EV’s trying to look like Buzz Lightyear’s spaceship? Like BMW’s own IX SUV. Isn’t it great then, that BMW took a normal looking car like the 4 Series GranCoupe, ripped out the combustion engine, and shoved in their latest and greatest EV drive components from the IX and I7 into it - with almost no discernible trade off?! In a world of stupid looking EVs, the i4 is very simply a sporty BMW sedan - one with that typical focus on driving enjoyment and luxury - that just happens to be electric, with good range.
Our car today is a Brooklyn Grey BMW G26 i4 eDrive40 M Sport with #BMWM Sport Pro Package - the longest name they could think of for the entry level RWD gran coupe. Today I’ll explain what powers both the edrive40 and the i4 M50, and then we’ll see how the car drives and if it truly is the electric bimmer we’ve been waiting for.
Now what they’ve done to electrify a 4 series? Amazingly the body in white is the same as our standard 4 Series, it doesn’t use the fancy aluminium space frame with “Carbon Cage” that the IX uses. Like the IX and new I7 - It features BMW’s 5th Generation E Drive technology. This unit combines electric motor, power electronics and transmission in one unit - this saves space and gives far improved power output given it’s size. Unlike most EVs like the Taycan or Mercedes models which use the same basic principle of Permanently Excited Electric Motors - The i4 uses an electrically excited motor, so doesn’t require rare earths in order to use magnets, and BMW says the power density is thus also high.
This all runs by a single speed transmission in the same housing, and a 83.9KW battery at the heart - one shared by both variants of this car. Overall they both have a lower centre of gravity than the 3 Series, helping negate some of that extra weight. FYI, it weighs in at 2122KG, almost identical to the RWD Taycan.
Our eDrive40 is Pure RWD - with one of those motors on the rear. It produces 340 BHP all made by the rear motor, with 430NM and a slow sprint to 60 of 5.5 seconds. More crucially, 365miles WLTP range - which we measure in reality of 320miles.
The I4 M50 has xdrive, so has an additional motor on the front, producing 255, and a less powerful rear motor with 308. Making altogether a potent 544 BHP! Torque is a massive 795NM and the overboots allows a launch control of 3.7 seconds; range way less at 318 miles WLTP. The Xdrive system adds weight, at 150KG more - 2276KG. Also, that figure is only temporary in Sport Boost mode, with the normal figure being less at 476BHP.
For the suspension, we have specific chassis tech for the i4 with an aluminium sheer panel and multiple struts and our front axle subframe with a fixed connection to the battery case. to help with rigidity, and the M50 get an additional aluminium brace between the front suspension too. The i4 has Steel springs on the front AND air suspension as standard on the rear.
Our car today has the M Sport Pro Pack which gives all the best goodies of the M50, like adaptive M suspension, variable steering, and M sport brakes - meaning we’ll get to see the best of what the eDrive40 has to offer! IB integrated brake system as we saw on the M3. Helps both brake feel and stopping power and can recoup energy at up to 195KW too.
Iconic Sounds is standard, by Hans Zimmer - will show you the comfort and sport sounds, as well as start up/turn off. Some good work here by BMW. On design: It’s funny how BMW is the company that can make the ugly IX, can also make a totally normal looking EV! I’m glad it exists. Will compare it to the m440i, show you the i4 m performance parts and what a future M4 Electric car could look like!
So, this i4 is 63K as spec’d - the 430i Gran Coupe is just over £50,000, but has way less power at 242bhp. The Taycan, much more at 20K plus! Does this car do everything we need from a modern sports sedan ev? Let’s find out today!!

    Great review
    I chose this over Taycan.
More range (occasionally important) and is over 4ins narrower! Really important for cross country roads which is where I do most of my miles.
Suspension is excellent but not at Taycan level and steering feel is good but better on Taycan. Acceleration is blisteringly quick. Smash your foot on the loud pedal and you have instant power to overtake. You can tow or fit normal bike rack - a utility which I like. (Not available on Taycan). But above all you can really hustle this car on B roads whereas Taycan often felt too wide.
Hatch is great for dogs and usual clobber. I still hanker after a Taycan but for a daily motor i4 e40 - ‘Tis a brilliant motor.

This is one of the most comprehensive reviews of this model. I’m so glad it’s not the m50 version too. Very nice channel. We are torn between this model and the Kia ev6 here in Korea but the more I watch the more I think this bmw suits me. I don’t need a rocket or a minivan - just a good drivers car with decent luggage space and acceptable back seats. It seems to tick most of the boxes. As for the assistant I think you should try same commands with a thick German accent.

Finally, someone reviewing the i4 40, not the M50. Great review too, really useful content.
I’ve ordered one of these; the autonomous driving isn’t currently available to order on the 40 - mad optioning from BMW (claimed chip problems).
The 40 has the daily usable range. By all accounts the range is good at motorway speeds too.
    Thank you, great content

I drive iX3 which has iDrive 7. After 5 months of driving I discovered that Apple CarPlay projects your next turn onto the HUD, you just have to use Apple Maps not Giggle 🤭 One other nice feature that I found was that when the car reports low range (60, 40, 20km left) Apple Maps starts proposing charging stations. I clicked on it out of curiosity and the list was very reasonable in terms of location, power and network. Top 3 on the list would be my priorities anyway and no 2 was the charger I was actually planning to use all along. I’m sure version 8 has all of the above and more

14:28 I find myself using those center console buttons the most, switching between Home, Media, and Map all on the grace that I can switch between those screens _by feel_ alone.
Imagine being able to put your hand down onto the console and pulling up the full-screen map without having to take your eyes off the road by discerning a button by its raised bordering, rather than hunting and pecking against a smooth glass screen.

Great review! I really enjoy your reviews - even without the very cool animations that I have not seen better anywhere! Nice calm way of talking (unlike Mark Watson), intelligent comments, nice voice and accent, actually.
The 40 is cheaper, longer range and lighter. It's only when you feel you really need to have 'more than plenty' of power that the 50 i relevant. The marginal extra range becomes important sometimes, meaning that you can make semi-long trips and make it home/there without charging.
i4 40 MSport, definitely my choice and the only car I'm really considering buying. Maaaybe an 330e estate, because we have a dog now, and it might accommodate a dog cage better?

I took delivery on mine M Sport i4 in San Remo Green last October and have not been disappointed. Average about 300mi of range over 15,000 miles. Heads up display is nice, lane keeping is a bit aggressive. Storage space is lacking, especially for for my sunglasses. And it is a bit tight getting in and out of the car for a 6ft 200lb guy. Other than that, the car has been fantastic.

I was looking at an i4 40e. Did the test drives and liked it. Not to sporty and comfortable enough.
But then came the elephant in the room. Delivery time over here is over 20 months. BMW realised this, so they increased their prices by 30% (in lease). Next-on came: you can’t get nice options on the i4 40e. No driving assist pro or parking assist pro … If you want one the dealership has a few and they ask 92000 Euro’s for them with 12000 km on the clock.
For only a little bit more you have a Taycan. My choice would be easy. As it is, for the price they are charging now I’d gladly pick an EQE on the cheaper end or a Porsche Taycan sport tourismo. Both can be delivered in way shorter time.
Side note: the new 2 coupe looks ugly to me, but it can’t compete with the i4.

I tested one last year, nice enough but I felt that removing essential switches for things like heating controls etc created some faff whilst driving. There's too much distraction using touchscreen controls instead of the usual touchy feely buttons, I like to keep my eyes on the road. It would benefit from steering wheel paddles for adjusting the regen, which works well on the EQE. Perhaps it's just a feature of frameless windows, but I found the wind noise intrusive at speeds above 40mph.

"I don't need to measure I can tell it's 5.5 sec 0-60"... uhh.. yeah, no, and you would be wrong. For one, the e40 doesn't have launch control like the m50. Brake torque launch like you did bogs it down badly. You just have to mash the pedal for quickest launch.
Second, Bjorn did launch after launch after launch and measured 0-100 kmh in 5.1 sec, which translates to roughly 4.9-5.0 sec 0-60 mph time.
Car and Driver measured 0-60 mph in 4.8 sec. They subtract rollout, which is usually .1 to .2 secs worth.
Moral of the story, edrive40 is a ~5.0 sec 0-60 mph vehicle. Better get your butt dyno recalibrated and launch technique straightened out.

When BMW first announced that they would not build a dedicated platform for their EV's i was worried and thought they lost the plot. But after Mercedes came up with their dedicated EV platform and build on them the objectively ugly EQS/EQE models, im actually thankful for BMW's approach of reusing their already existing platform/models. The BMW i7 can have 100 miles less range as far as i'm concerned and i would still prefer it over an EQS.
