Worst thing about limited edition plastic models is how they undermine any argument for why other models are still in resin. Surely if store opening super limited Captain Whateverus can be made in a plastic without bankrupting GW, so can all those cool Necromunda characters that don’t sell much. Not to mention that the resources going into designing, sculpting and producing a model that will disappear never to be seen again could have gone into upgrading long-suffering finecast character models like Trazyn, Vect or Lucius.
I think the difference is that a limited edition AoS or 40k model is going to vastly outsell those Necromunda characters, so they'll get their money back on the mold pretty quick. I do agree that they no need to move the last of the failcast mini's to plastic.
Jay, you could just use that Vampire Lord in Warcry. I don't think there's a unique stat block for him, but he should work as a Vampire Lord stand in. Then you just need a handful of mini's to finish up your warband instead of trying to build a full army.
Jay I watch a lot of your videos but this is legitimately one of the best, most direct, well-thought-out videos you have done. Your analyses of the psychology behind the manufacturing of these models is very accurate. I love the idea that once an entire game is out-of-print, that gives the exact same feeling as an intentionally manufactured "limited edition". I never considered that (it's why I enjoy retro game collecting!) and that perspective was really eye opening for me. Thank you!
I would like to see Jay paint up some wasteland warfare robots or mirelurks. Since he does like the silliness of certain series, the idea of like a sentrybot painted to promote a hardware store or Cereal brand would be fun
Loving the extended session of pretending to paint that vampire lord. Halfway through I started counting the number of times you cleaned your brush without touching the model 😂 Quality episode as always guys, thanks
The supporter swag commercial was g.d. seamless! For real - I appreciate sponsorships that fit inside the video topic, and you all do it better than most everyone else.
5:45 - Inquisitors had codexes up till 5th edition when the Grey Knight codex released and the Sisters of Battle army list in white dwarf. Even then they still pop up from time to time like in the Index books for 8th edition.
my local games store had that limited vampire in their sales corner and I loved it so much I decided I wanted to go for a soulblight army, together with my cursed city box I'm not even really tempted to buy anything for it until it's all painted. not that that stopped me
Hey Jay! I hope you see this! I just wanted to thank you for telling me about the star wars giveaway! I've been obsessed with stat wars legion all year and I've been trying to win that luke from every game event near where I live! I just got the email from Valhalla hobby that I won the giveaway and they the special edition luke is shipped and on the way! Thank you so much again I can't wait to build and paint him!
I got the Goff Rocker because I am working on a ‘miniature band’. So far, I have the Goff Rocker, a Noise Marine and a Nords bagpipe player from Conquest.
Don’t forget to get Dj Clamavus! He’s got cassette tapes for his tape player backpack and speaker stick :p He is also my only GSC model painted like he’s at a rave
I love my limeted edition Octavia for Infinity. I play her very often. And love her big rocketlauncher on the alternative sculpt. I could have bought the normal version ,but i realy love her badass limeted edition sculpt!
you put everything in to these videos, you are like a 6y old showing off his christmas gifts🙂🙂😊 love your vids, you have so much energy, perfect balance of nerdyness and enjoyment. love you😊😊 ohh, and why is there a middle finger in your painting room!?
i really like the vampire colour scheme. it has a very 80's nes sprite kinda feel to it, like i feel like i could see that character in castlevania 1-3
Nice that they included a basic base with that Luke. This way, you can have the "intended" display base too, but if you want, you can have fun with building up the blank base to fit your army's basing.
Since GW uses the "fear to miss out" as a tool to screw their customers over, i welcome everyone who 3d prints those models. Seeing Tariana Palos offers for 80+ € on ebay makes me sick to my stomach.
Or when they make the stats for a model really good, on top of a really really good model design Especially when the model is OOP or only in a limited run box. Fuck that, you 3D printed a proxy? Good.
I never got any limited addition stuff. I'm always a bit bummed but I never look back and truly regret it. Over the years I learned that it doesn't matter to GET EVERYTHING. It doesn't matter at all
Well, if GW won't sell the models to those that would buy them, why not? Not like they can lose customers from people 3d printing things they won't sell to said customers.
I don't know how everyone else does it, necessarily, but I only pick them up if I think they look really good and would fit something I want to do to kind of force myself down from buying *everything.* I got Bayards revenge because I needed a Legion Champion for my Night Lords, and I felt he'd be perfect. One blood Angel instead of an ork, and a jetpack later, and he's one of my favorites I've done for my legion. I got the terminator chaplain because it was PERFECT for what I wanted as my Master of Sanctity for my 40k marines, and I've gotten the Goff Rocker to turn into an Ork Noise Marine for another project. I feel like this kind of "Grab what you know you want to use or something you know you want to have and paint" is the best way to go about it.
for me limited edition things are a way to try fun things that you otherwise wouldnt get. Best example being Goff rockers, they dont fit in anywhere but they are just fun.
I think exclusives/limited time game pieces are ok if there's a playable alternative. What leaves a bad taste in your mouth is when those exclusive pieces have exclusive rules
Jay painted that Star Wars blue alien rebel dude’s head the same way as this vampire chick and I love it please go into more detail on how you paint that next time you get the chance thank you
I love vampireses, and I LOVE the Crimson Court and models from the Cursed City set, regardless of the hoo-haw from that debacle. That special edition one however just didn't move me. Refuse to delve into Star Wars - too many other expensive hobbies. LOVE Cartavolnus - your paint work KILLS. You're definitely right about Inquisitor fans vs. non-inquisitor fans. He's an incredible model - the creedy Necronomicon-y book, the red voluminous robe and deep hood. The cybernetic arm. It's just so Inquisitor, and looks taken directly out of the Inquisitor book back when Eisenhorn premiered. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoy buying random models to eventually paint. Number one reason I also own a 3D printer. I just bought the Tzeentch Curseling to practice NMM blue armor. Great vid as always.
We are collectors so it's only natural that we want to add something rare to our miniature collection whether we need it or not, it's almost like a way to show off as well to prove that our collection is better or superior to some one else's because we have a special or limited figure others don't have. A special miniature or limited miniature also shows our eagerness to throw double if not even triple the amount of money on something with the excuse that the figure is special so thus it validates our spendings.
I am perfectly fine with special, limited edition miniatures made for special events. So long as, if they're intended to be used in a game, there's a more standard version of that model already available. Bayard's Revenge is fine, because there's already an Emperor's Champion model available normally. It's just a fancy version with an Ork. The Inquisitor, however, is really annoying, because there's not really a good Inquisitor kit out there that's not like Eisenhorn, Greyfax or Coteaz which isn't in Finecast, and a good plastic Inquisitor kit that's really customizable has been on my wishlist for a while. The Goff Rocker doesn't seem like it'll be given specific rules and they seem to be angling more for it to be commemorative, so I don't really care. I haven't seen any of these that I just HAVE to have, so I'm not really bothered all that much by it, personally.
I used the limited edition sergeant Castus as kitbash fodder. Used the base for an Illic Nightspear and the body for a Black Templars apothecary. Bits for the bits god.
I disagree, Inquisitors should not be limited as there is only 1 of them, but a different variant of the same character makes way more sense for a limited run TLDR: Inquisitors should never ever be limited, alternate sculpts for Luke are more justified being limited
if more were like the Goff rocker where the mini isn't so much a character from a book or something that should just be in 40k or aos and instead is just a new thing that was made because creating things is fun then I think buying limited edition minis would be better but maybe im biased cause I actually bought the green singing boy.
I don't play GW games, so all models are just a sculpture for me, but the sticker shock of GWs infantry heroes is just too much for me. Its also where I do sometimes print, I don't like the process of 3d printing, but sometimes there's a sculpt that needs to be magicked into this world.
totally agreewith you in this one. aos models are amazing :D i painted my tzeentch daemons so vibrant that opponents told me they shine on every table and it just feels amazing. my paintjob is far from perfect and maybe not even considered "good" (i.e. flamers are just 3 contrast paints blended on a wraithbone primer), but i just love the reaction of other people when they walk around table and stop to take a look at them.
The same thing for starwars models is why I can’t start a lord of the rings army I just can’t paint to a standard I hold the characters to I wish they weren’t based entirely off the movies it would be a lot easier to get into
Man, I miss when Inquisitors actually got cool stuff... Like a piece of wargear that made folks who fired plasma weapons have a 6+ to hit, for both sides.
I think the worst form of limited edition was when GW made an exclusive primaris champion for an event. Meaning if you didn’t attend the event there was no way for you to get it outside of paying a stupid amount from a reseller
The thing to keep in mind with limited edition boxes, is that usually only the discount is limited edition. Most models tend to be released either as separate pieces or as parts of different collections (Necrons Royal Court ie.)
He's talking about those models that are specifically released as single figure limited editions. For example, that Vampire Lord was only sold as a single figure and was only available for a limited time. It never appeared in any other box. They weren't ones that were exclusive to some big box and were then later sold separately.
Even the ones that aren't supposed to be limited editions are selling out within minutes anymore. The good christmas boxes were gone almost instantly >:[
I have an idea for video: Model a figure in 3d software for 3D printing. After that let someone paint it with a atmospheric lighting. In parallel let the other person do some texture and light work in 3d software to make a render. Compare results! Might be a weak idea, but could be interesting for NMM armor! Especially if render used as a reference photo.
The worst thing for me about Games Workshop making all of these exclusive and limited edition boxes and models is the scalpers who buy them all up and then sell them for extortionate prices. I was at Warhammer World for the first time just before Golden Demon and whilst I was there I watched some guy walk in and buy 30 of the commemorative Primaris model, clearly just to sell. Ruins it for everyone else who wants to get it at the normal price. Really glad my small store in Scotland is free of that so any commemorative is easily picked up after the first week of release if you can't get there quick.
I feel like the choice for white highlights on many of your Warhammer paintjobs doesn't read well. The subtlety you exercised on Luke though is superb. Can really tell you are passionate about the Star Wars minis.
I always feel that limited editions should be reserved to alt sculpts or wacky stuff which is probably why I don't mind to much paying a little extra for limited run stuff like from KD. Putting mainline stuff like that Pilot Luke as one annoys me as I see that enough in the action figure collection area with store exclusives. could have been something like Dagobah Luke with Yoda on his back or even Hoth patrol Luke
I know what you mean and how you feel. I’ve had to restrain my impulses for these… but I did get that GW bday inquisitor and the Jacob Bugmansson models.
You could have 2 models, one is like a 7/10 model which is awesome but you are not sure you want it. The other is 5/10, not quite as good and again, you are unsure. The 7/10 model though is available all year round so you think, I'll have a think and buy it later. The 5/10 is only available for 1 week and you have to decide now if you want it. So you buy the worse one because of urgency and the better one, you postpone and postpone and then you never buy it because something else comes along. Usually another 5/10 limited edition. That's all there is to it. Limited editions don't give you the time to think about it. There are 8 or even 9/10 models i still don't own because i can buy them any time. I even wanted the MESBG Pelennor field box for years but kept putting it off. As soon as the Osgiliath box was announced, I knew the Pelennor fields one would go out of production so I bought it there and then. All because It now had a time limit. But the 5/10 models which are no where near as good get instant buys because I can't think about it or wait a while.
Legend has it Jay’s shirt was originally white, but after years of painting and cleaning brushes on it it became a lovely shade of grimdark green
I don't know I heard that it was originally lime green but then there was a tragic Nuln Oil incident that permanently darkened it up.
I saw that too and was like WTF who does that? Jay, you're a wildman!
Sounds like Nurgle shenanigans
The best thing is that he's wearing an apron. But it's a presentation apron, so you can't risk getting paint juice on it.
No ones writing legends about these dudes lmao.

I dont get it Forge world does resin GW necromunda stuff is all plastic ... what the hell are you on mate ...
They not made Hohus in plastic man! Little meaningless Warmaster Horus still in resin. That's a shame.
@@derionone Forge World does make resin Necromunda character mini's. Lots of unique characters, creatures, bounty hunters, and other hired guns.

Recently I've been thinking if I'm going to buy a random model I could use it for Killteam/Warcry if it's an option
Or just use her in AoS? Just remember to give her a 40 mm base instead of 32 mm which she comes with in the box.
@@Deus888 But Jay didn't sound all that thrilled about having to buy another expensive AoS army.

I love how most creators would have stretched this into 3 videos. Jay? Nope. Just bam bam bam, 3 limited editions done and dusted.
Loving the limited edition whistle intro throwback
The colours on that vampire lord and you used the old EOB intro song for the Luke painting !
I usually buy them for fun painting projects, I dont play orks but the Goff rocker was a fun unique model to paint.
Unique? There are Ork rockers in other brands
Could proxy as a Weirdboy and his maybe-maybe-not Psyker powers may just be the power of rock or something. And getting a HQ unit too.

I was disappointed in Goff Rocker. Not Christmasy! I loved last year's model.
The wood hand already had a beer but now it has 4 tamyia thin cement. Please, please, please put a santa's hat in the middle finger
