      It's a wonderful exercise with many benefits. It depends on your goals. You can warm up with it but you can also build vocal endurance while not taxing the vocal folds.

    As someone working through Vocal Cord Dysfunction, this is a very helpful video. If your breath is sputtering and not smooth after adding ooo sound, try changing pitch. Go high to low, low to high. This will help clear residue in your throat. It's a little gross, sorry, but so helpful.

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  11 місяців тому +2

      Thank you for sharing! Yes, you are right that sometimes changing the pitch may help in starting the lip trill.

    This exercise is the most recommended one by everyone I looked up- vocal coaches to speech training professionals, yet I've never been able to do it. Just kept blowing air, almost forcing my tongue to try making that noise XD
    But your tip on "lifting the cheeks" worked immediately. Thank you so much!

    I take lessons on vocal music and am told that my voice needs to be more powerful. I hope this exercise can help me.
    Right now, I am experiencing pain in my vocal cords and am unable to sustain the high notes. Will this exercise solve my problem?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  6 місяців тому

      I don't have much information about your feeling of pain. Do you feel pain only when you do this exercise, only when you go high? If so, then change something about that - less air, less pressure, less vocal effort, different position of tongue or jaw, more whiny sound? If you are experiencing pain in general, then have your voice checked by a laryngologist.

    I’ve used that and several other alike that one both on me and my students and choirs. But I would like to know the physics of it! Could you share that knowledge with us? Why does these exercises strengthen our voice and which part are they actually strengthening?

    • @healthyvoicetips
      @healthyvoicetips  2 роки тому +6

      I will post a short video on this topic soon. If you are interested in the science behind SOVT exercises, check out my long videos on SOVTs. But in summary, this exercise brings the vocal folds together so if you do this regularly, it strengthens the coordination of muscles that bring the vocal folds together. Then, it depends on exactly what kind of sound you are making, you maybe also strengthening the TA or CT muscle. If the sound is low enough, you are strengthening the TA muscle. If you are doing sirens on lip trills, you are also strengthening the CT muscle. I hope this makes sense.

    • @fireflyon
      @fireflyon 2 роки тому +1

      @@healthyvoicetips yes, it does. But I’m confused and technically torn apart. Because other techniques exercise these muscles by singing on glottis onsets. Because we then learn to close our true vocal folds muscularly and it helps to gain kinaesthesia in the area and we learn to feel and train the TA directly. This technique is based on not sending too much air towards the true vocal folds, in order to not obtain constriction.
      In the contrary SOVT are working mostly with air flow. What is your professional opinion on this?
