Do you experience throat tightness while singing or speaking? In this video, I am explaining why throat tightness happens and what exactly goes on in the throat when your throat gets tight. I will also introduce and demonstrate an exercise for throat tightness relief. It’s a very simple but effective exercise, called yawn sigh technique. You may be familiar with the use of yawn singing but is a full-blown yawn the right thing to do when singing? Watch this video to find out. I will also share a bonus tip about my favourite throat tightness treatment approach.

Thank you for watching! So, how did you do with the yawn sigh exercise from this video? Let me know in the comments! Watch my other video about laryngeal massage here: ua-cam.com/video/um0fp2s2PUo/v-deo.html
I have been struggling with vocal tension for years since a bad bout of bronchitis.
My voice had never been the same since then until I started following the solutions in this video, and two others of your instruction .
Thank you very much.
I actually feel my voice coming back, and my jaw is no longer in constant tension/pain.
I cannot thank you enough!💚
i am coughing everytime i do the exercies.. it ends in a short cough and discomfort

I just found you. My vocal chords are to tight, they were view by a camera at the Doctors. I have trouble speaking and use to sing. I'm more concerned with the tightness and starting with the video of yours that you would recommend. Thank you for helping so many people. I'm glad I found your site..
Thanks mam so much god bless you 🙏
The audio is so bad, sounds like your talking onto a large can.
ur words motivate me " if u haven't experience throat tightness u haven't try hard " omg
I don’t even have to try, I have vocal cord dysfunction😂😂
It REALLY DID 😭
@@kettafixx is it okay to laugh 🤐
I am happy to hear that.
Yesssssss ! She motivated me too with this line ! 🔥🔥🔥
Every time I sing this happens and I love singing:(
Maybe you are overusing those muscles - maybe too much tension in the tongue, jaw or the laryngeal muscles that lift the larynx. Evaluate your vocal technique and change some things.
me too! i wanna sing out with my voice but it's so hard to do. after about 10 minutes of singing i can't sing anymore
Same! once i learned throat tension was bad i started focusing hard on just really relaxing my throat muscles and it helped to a degree, but i just sing so much that no matter what, my throat gets tight and sore. this yawn technique helped it relax alot i can feel.
@@healthyvoicetips I'm experiencing the same like two days after singing , so I didn't sing today even though my throat is like that in night and in morning it is normal
It doesn't matter if I'm talking, singing, or doing nothing. It feels like the tension is always there.
Yes, that is possible. Have you seen a laryngologist for a voice assessment?
@@healthyvoicetips From a massagist point of view, I believe that in these cases,we need to remove tension with our hands and then start all over again with the technique. What do you think Katarina?
Sounds like you need a doctor
This is magical...I like to sing and people like my singing but there's always that unsatisfying feeling whenever I sing because I feel my throat isn't clear or there's always some kind of things blocking my voice...tried this and saw excellent results....this is magical😊😊😊
This is literally me. I love singing and people love my singing but I feel so off with my voice because I don't feel like I'm singing to my full potential because Its like there's something blocking my throat. Lets see how this goes for me
Thank you for such a kind comment. You are magical!
me too!
How often did you try this?
I’m very glad I found this. My throat was hurting from all of the tension in my throat, but when I did this it immediately helped
I am glad you found one of many techniques that release tension from your throat. There are other things you could do. Check out my other videos on this channel and try them out. There may be more tools for you.
This technique immediately fixed the issue I was having with voice strain. Thank you so much! I am majoring in Speech Pathology, and you are incredibly inspiring! It's interesting that something as "simple" as the yawning technique can help with that muscle tension so much! I'm subscribing :))
Welcome my future colleague. It's great to have you here.
This is gold! Sounds like another person entered the room!
Thank you!!!
I'm commenting just for the UA-cam algorithm to do it's s work. This video deserves more views. You deserve more subscribers. This really helped me!
Wow, thank you! I really appreciate your kind words.
Good idea!
I had a teacher who loved his version of this "yawn sigh" exercise. I also find it very helpful! Thank you for the reminder.
Thank you for stopping by!
@@healthyvoicetips My pleasure as always!
Wow that actually kinda helped. Thanks I don’t think I have a great nor terrible voice but I do love to sing,
I unknowingly slept away doing the yawning exercise :D
😂
Aww😂😂😂
Same😴
This is extremely helpful, especially since I enjoy singing lower more but my throat would always end up sore afterwards. Thank you!
I am glad you found it helpful!
This has been my biggest problem :( aging has caused my voice to deepen rapidly, now i like to sing in a deeper tone but it strains my voice like something in my throat is holding me back. i'm only 23 and scared about this
Lady knows what she talking bout.
Thank you! ❤
I've been struggling with this issue for probably a year now (I had no idea what it was)
This is going to save my voice thank you
I am glad it was helpful/
Of a thosand videos, the key was the larynx and that is why I sang with tension all the time, however I can’t seem to keep that larynx on the low position. vibrato came naturally, thank you!!
if your larynx is habitually in a higher position, then it will be more challenging to keep it in a low position. But it is good to have options and with practice you can move your larynx in any way you want.
So I'm learning to sing, but I find that rapping helps relieve my throat tension for when I sing. For me I think it's because singing seems like I'm supposed to have a whole different voice for some reason. I understand that's not the case, but rapping helps cause it is my actual voice and it's warming up all my throat muscles really. In order to rap properly you have to just let your jaw almost hang with no tension and air has to flow smoothly through your throat and off your tongue. So if you are having trouble singing I would try rapping to warm up, but don't push your air out all rough and start yelling like Eminem or NF, those two artist know what they're doing and have been doing it for years. just let it flow nicely and eventually it'll help tension all around for singing as well
Thank you for your suggestion. You are right rapping is like speaking and singing requires a little bit different muscle coordination.
I hope you know this was super helpful for me and stopped me from giving up on singing because of my voice T_T
Same for me!
ive had tension since i was at least 8 and it would always hurt and i would struggle to speak and sing, this helped so much and my voice both sounded and felt better after doing the exercises thank you
Have you ever talked to a laryngologist to have your voice checked?
This is the first practical tip I’ve come across for voice strain. Thanks
Thank you so much, Katarina! Finally something substantial I can work with. Will start my routine tomorrow.😊
Wonderful! I am glad that you found it useful.
Wait I’m working hard enough to sing I feel so happy because I’m trying to become a singer I’m so happy!!!
Army that's what I thought 😭😭😭 we should be happy 💜💜
Haha nice
I am happy that you are happy!
You are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to singing! Thank you.
Thank YOU Bernice!
I used to sing a lot for school competitions with no break so i took a 1-year/ break but now i cant reach the notes i used to reach easily, this helped me get even just a bit higher, Thank you
Take your time to get back into shape. It is normal to loose some range if you take a year break from singing.
@@healthyvoicetips Thank you :)
I’m a tenor who’s struggled with throat tightness for several years. I’ve finally figured out good breath support, but my throat remains tight; so I’m going to try this and see if it works.
The famous Met Opera bass Giaiotti used a silent yawn inhale to cure his tight throat.
Try it and see if it is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
You have helped me tremendously, thank you very much!
I am so very happy to hear that.
This immediately helped , worst feeling ever when your voice loses range before singing.
That was fantastic to hear broken down and illustrated.
Happy to hear that you found it helpful.
Wow...this was helpful, I tried singing immediately after the exercises and I could not longer feel throat tension. I even tried putting my throat on tension like it use to be but I couldn't do it. Thank you ma'am ❤
Wonderful! Glad it worked.
Wow! This is excellent. I am seeing the results right at this moment. It's magical. It didn't go completely but I saw the slightest change soon after doing this. Like something is opening up slowly. Thank you so much for your video. ❤
Wonderful! I am happy to hear that it worked for you so quickly!
Loved the simply suggestions. I saw immediate results. I will practice everyday for ten minutes.
Thank you, for sharing.🙌
Wonderful, Regina!
So happy I found this channel! 😁🙏🏻
Me too!
Thank you👍😀❤️ great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you it has really helped my throat tension. I found it a little tricky at first but I have benefited from this and try to do on a daily basis
That is great. I am glad it was helpful.
Oh wow, I've done some of these exercises unconsciously. Thanks for sharing these.
No problem. Thank you for stopping by!
Great video. I definitely feel like I have a lot to learn about learning to relax my throat. I appreciate your video because it helps me realize how I can see my throat tension.
Glad it was helpful.
Yes it works amazingly, I tried it while listening to your video. Thanks Maam.
Glad to hear that!
this is honestly a miracle video
Not a miracle. If these tips help, it means that you most likely had tension and then these tips were able to release that tension. Therefore, you feel like it's a miracle. But it's nothing more than finding the right approach for your problem. I am happy to hear that you were able to release tension and feel better.
This is really helpful. I can feel the difference in singing with relaxed muscles vs. tight muscles. I think it's just hard to be consciously doing this especially if you are used to speaking or singing with tight muscles.
Ada, it takes practice. You cannot expect to know it right away. It involves some motor learning and that takes time and practice.
I love you and thank you so much for the exercises.
You're so welcome!
Thanks dear God bless you
Same to you
I just loved the tips. It is shown in such an organic and natural way. I am a man and I used be simply overstrained only in thinking of going to higher tones. Thank you so much
Thank you for your lovely comment.
What an informative and fun video! I love the exercises :)
I am glad you liked the exercises!
I've had a lot of issues with throat tightness, and have been doing laryngeal massage for a while and now I'm looking forward to incorporating this exercise into my routine.
Let me know how this exercise works for you.
Pay attention to your posture, foreward head posture can strain your neck and throat and may be the cause for your throat tightness
@@mrabout50 this is so true
How do you do your laryngeal massage? I need that
@@nyameyie3630 go watch Katrina’s videos on that. That’s how I learned.
Omg i love you this helped me a lot ❤❤❤❤❤ i hated my voice now i can see improvements almost immediately
I am very happy to hear that!
This is fascinating. Great video!
Thank you Mark for your kind words!
It's really helps Thanks you so much 🙏
Glad to hear that. Thank you!
Awesome video. I have been trying to sing so hard I have developed a seemingly damaged/overtightened SCM which affects my hyoid and upper cervical spine. I have been practicing proper posture but this video is exactly what I need to take the stress off my neck when speaking/singing. Thank u God Bless
I am glad you found it useful.

I love your channel 💕💕
Thank you so much!! That is very kind of you!
Thanks for the exercises
No problem!
Thank you for this video! I just started in a choral group so I am subscribing to your channel. I can do a partial yawn and get my larynx down but as soon as I vocalize it comes up. This is hard work! 😆
Yes, singing is a hard work. Many people make it look easy but there are many hours of practice behind that picture.
Wow this video helped me tremendously!
I'm so glad!
thank you for this means a lot to help out
Happy to hear.
Thank you my throat has been really tight lately when I sing! This really helps❤️

Thank you so much now i feel my voice less tired when i exercise too
Wonderful. Happy to hear that you found it helpful.
I would get throat tightness at the base of my neck after some recording(not professionally just starting out) and this exercise really helped me. I could feel the tension release when I followed the yawning technique.
So happy to hear that it was helpful.
This is exactly what I need
Excellent!
thank you!
😉
For the past year I started to feel a lump in my throat all the time, I went to the doctor and he said that I’m fine. I think that it’s a muscle problem.
Did it go away?? I have the same for 8 months now and I also believe it’s a muscle problem!
Yes, it is very common to be a muscle issue or tension related issue. Did you find a way to release the tension?
thank you♥️
No problem
You have such a pretty voice! I was just diagnosed with laryngeal dystonia and I've had it for 20 years. I think mine came on due to my social anxiety and now I think it's just embedded in my brain to tightening my throat muscles and talk from my throat instead of my mouth. It's embarrassing when people ask me what's wrong with my voice. It actually makes me more anxious, which then makes my voice worse...
Sorry! I have spasmodic dysphonia. Not sure if it's the same as laryngeal dystonia.
I am so sorry to hear about your vocal troubles. I hope you have a good voice therapist who can support you on your vocal journey.
@@christinadodd7083Hey!!
Is this cure now because m also facing with same issue from past 2 years and is very difficult to speak like this.Every time i have to think and talk.🥹
thanks 🙏
You're welcome!
Thank you for this. I am a singer and lately my performances haven't been as good as they once were! I feel like my Larynx is literally being squeezed and it makes me feel like I am choking. I can sing through it but treating usually helps. I Think I need to learn to breathe better. Thank you so much.
As I said, tension can come from any part of the body, including breathing.
I always liked to sign but my throat always hurts very bad afterwards. This year i started going to solo singing classes and there's some exercise but it doesn't help at all, im a soprano and that just makes it worse but i will try harder and see how it goes. Thank you for the help❤️
Did this help with that?
Would also love to hear if this worked for you?
Find a different singing teacher. A good teacher should be able to help you sing without pain.
I couldn't even feel resonance before I started doing proper singing. All my sinus cavities cleared up in and I had a whole more lot of range I could work with. After about 3 weeks of doing this I was able to here so much better and smell better as well. This has a great impact on your senses. This exercise is also used to find your mixed voice which is what I sing in. This is the healthy way to sing. I feel so relaxed even singing high notes.
I am so glad that you found this helpful. Thank you for your comment. I wish you all the best.
@@healthyvoicetips Thank you for the reply.
THIS REALLY HELPED THANK YOUU NOW I CAN SING FOR MY GF LOL
Happy to hear.
It’s funny, I’ve been doing some of these exercises to speak better. I figured them out myself, but this video helps even more!
Wow! You are a very intuitive person! Thank you for commenting!
This help a lot, actually after you telling me the fact on breathing to hard or something I tried to breath slowly and and let my vocal voice be and then BOOOM I can finally sing a higher pitch, thank you for telling use about the exercises :)))))
High notes don't need as much breath because the vocal tract gets smaller.
Thank you so much for this video. I am a musician and now I felt that after a few gigs my throat started to go tight. After your exercise I can do it better again. That is unreal. I always actually thought that this thing is very wrong if I do yawning and start to sing as I feel that my neck muscles are used to much. But now I think Its ok to do that.
Using your voice is always a finding a balance. Therefore, I say to all my clients to focus on vocal effort. That is the best guide: listen to the muscles and if you feel you are doing too much, you are probably doing too much. Try to lessen the muscle effort and see if that feels better.
Looks helpful and I've watched so many videos but this one looks help me to improve my voice in speaking at the same time singing i used to sing using my throat and these one of my problem i hope
Glad it was helpful!
Guys, after this video, I was thinking over the way I speak... I work as an online teacher and it requires me to be sitting all dsy long and I often felt pain and throat tightness when I taught clssses sitting and I didn't when I was standing. Then, I saw that the main problem wasn't the way I was speaking, but the armrests of the chair. The armchairs were to high and made me rest my arms and adopt a crooky position. This position would tighten all my torso and cause the tightness. I hd suffered from everyday pain and hoarseness for 4 months and now I don't feel anything anymore.
Thank you doc!!!
Thank you for sharing your story! I am so happy to hear that you found a solution! All the best!
What the heck, this is so helpful!
Happy to hear that!
Hi! Of all the video clip exercises that you showed, this exercise I find very difficult to follow. I would really love to do this exercise ❤️ to relax my throat.
Can you give me more detail? What is difficult? Which step do you get stuck on? What don't you understand? What can you do from the exercise?
hello, This is a strange lesson but it think it could work for me. Thanks so much. I am a singer in a rock band and i always end up with a sore throat or irritated throat, where some of my voice is gone. I was looking at 'singing' lessons for a while, but realized, it's my speaking voice that I seem to strain....So I hope to find ways to NOT destroy my voice/throat. Thanks again for this video and your others!!
You're very welcome!
My voice felt more airy thank uuu
If more airy is what you want, then I am happy to hear that it worked for you.
Thank you reminding me about this. With my voice coach, I did this as a warm up but did not know its specific purpose.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Katarina, excellent tips, really helped. Diagrams could have been a bit more detailed (naming the parts) though.
Thank you for your feedback.
I have been singing since the age of three with correct tqnique but lately I have been singing with my throat instead of my diafragm and it has been really affecting my voice, range and breath
I am sorry to hear that you are having trouble. But singing is a never ending process of finding a balance.
i loved this video it it was helpful BUT i recommend you to speed the video a bit before you start to get bored, i don't know if anyone here is like me but i don't like to watch a whole video but if i speed it it will be better. overall the video was helpful thanks!💚💚
Thank you! And yes, you are not the only one watching YT videos at higher speeds :)
Thank you...time for me to release tension...I think I just need to get to know these areas...I always have tension when I sing.
You are onto something. You should not feel tension when you sing. Start getting to know your vocal instrument and ways to release tension when you use it.
Great information soon I will be a pro at singing :P
I should hope so!!! 😉
Yes the yawn insides great!
I am glad you liked it.
Yes I've been noticing a difference in my voice from doing these lately!
Have had throat tension and a bit of hurting for the past few months and can’t get rid of it so I’ll try this! I really wanna sing better again :(
I hope it worked
Thank you so much, could you talk about Diplophonia, please?
Diplophonia is when there are two different tones created at the level of the vocal folds. It usually happens when vocal folds vibrate at two different frequencies for whatever reason. If this is not something you are doing on purpose, I would check with a laryngologist to see what is happening at the level of your vocal folds.
Nice
Thanks
