Vocal Straw Exercises (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) Voice Therapy

- With normal voice production, the lungs push air between the vocal cords causing them to vibrate. In order for vibration to occur, enough air pressure must also develop below the vocal cords. Known as subglottic pressure, there needs to be a match between this pressure and how tightly the vocal cords are positioned together. Vocal problems and fatigue occur when there is a mismatch or imbalance between the subglottic pressure and the vocal cords which are closed together against this pressure.
Vocalization through a thin straw puts the vocal folds in the most optimum position and shape for vibration. Known as semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT), this is accomplished by creating pressure above the vocal cords to partially negate the pressure from below.
As such, voicing becomes easier with the better position and shape of the vocal folds, especially to help start a clear easy sound whether the vocal cords are too stiff or too tight from muscle tension dysphonia, or whether they are swollen due to inflammation. Furthermore, a strong clear voice can be sustained for longer periods of time without fatigue.
A regular drinking straw can be used at first, but as one gets proficient in these exercises, the goal is to use a 3-4mm diameter straw that is 5 inches long. These straw exercises should be performed several times a day for about 5 minutes.

Have you tried all of these? Any favourites from the list? :)
Thank you for the wonderful video. I’m not into vocal production and yet I was engaged and interested all the way through. I love the details which will allow me to come back and play the video time and time again as I integrate the instructions. Well done. Thank you for your hard work.

Thanks for the tips. It’s difficult to stay mindful when speaking, and frustrating when you get negative feedback. I’ll definitely try your techniques!

Thanks madam

And my mom thought it's a bee or some insect😂😂
my dad thought i was drowning in my bedroom because i was blowing in a bottle of water hoping it will mask the sound
For water resistance therapy, it is better to use a flexible straw or tube to prevent any poor head and neck posture.
Cool
In this video, my visual stimuli overlapped with the sound stimuli. Would this be a problem? 😃
Good
Is it possible to lose your voice between the exersice
Does this help with breath support?

Good to know, I have issues with speech & drs ignored me
I was also ignored by a doctor that made me hopeless. Am still not losing hope.🙏
Me too, I'm Sorry to hear that
Lord knows I never saw this coming.
This made my head real weird, but in a good way lol
i will try this tomorrow or so.. but seems difficult to not breathe in between haha.. i fear i might breathe in through the mouth haah
As I, a total amateur, understands it, different pitches will need different resonant chambers, so lower ones will be in chest area, while higher ones are using various chambers in the head. However these exercises are more about breath control so you need not be so concerned for this particular tuition. Just try to get the results demonstrated.
@@WideCuriosity Ok, i understand. Thanks for answering me! Do you know, if diaphragmatic breathing exercises really help for a low voice? If the answer is yes, 1) is there an estimated time to know the results? 2) Is the effect achieved permanent or only lasts for a few days/hours?
Thanks
@@Nessuno911 I'm not expert enough to know, but this seems to suggest it's a possibility. www.google.com/search?q=diaphragmatic+breathing+exercises+voice+benefits
Are these exercises good for singers? Or any particular exercises for singers?
Yes
Hi… what does it mean if i am struggling to do the exercises through a coffee stir straw?? I went back to the regular drinking straw because i was feeling awkward and like i was choking… so if you could help me understand what i am doing wrong i would greatly appreciate that. :)
Your instincts are correct. If you’re struggling with the smaller diameter of straw, you need to use a larger diameter for a bit longer. Smaller straws have more benefit, but you can’t start with smaller straws because your voice isn’t efficient enough at the early stages. Work with a larger straw for another week or two, then try something slightly narrower. (A coffee straw might be too much of a leap.) Remember you’re always looking for a sense of ease. It’s okay to feel some resistance, but you shouldn’t feel like you’re fighting against the straw. Be patient and just enjoy the exercise while your voice develops. The size of the straw isn’t everything.
Mam my child has autism , he is twelve years old, previously he was non verbal but now he can speak but he speaks in very low voice, not audible in phone , we can only hear it if we are sitting one feet distance from him , please help me what I should do to improve his voice quality, thank you so much
I'm experiencing pain at the tip of my tongue while speaking. Could you please suggest some exercises to help correct this issue?
Great tutorial . Not everyone explains to breathe in through the nose not the straw .
I’m pretty sure the voice on this video is AI generated - the irony is not lost on me!
😂 Don't Worry Guys I have the Wrost Voice ever in Human History 🤣 and Fun Fact is that Sometimes only Air 💨 comes out when I want to Speak 🗣️ 😂 but by 1 years of Hard Work on My Voice Now I am an Voice Artist 🤣🤣🤣 And Yeah you can Change your Voice if you want 😉♥️ and if you have any Que You can comme nt in my latest 🎥 because i get regular 200 comm so it's very Hard for me to see this 🎥 comm nt 🙂 I will definitely help you 😉👍🏻
How can i utilise my heavey voice on singing and i cant understand on which genre my voice suits
I’m not sure how much the general public is going to be able to relate to the goal of vocal production being in the mask, especially when you say things like feeling the voice coming from the eyes…confusion from too much specific information which is geared toward people who study vocal production can lead to frustration and disinterest.
It seems to me the purpose of this channel is for those who want to go in-depth rather than geared towards the lowest common denominator. Almost all other content online is for that crowd.
It’s for people who need voice therapy or for those wanting to improve their singing.
@@HappilyAnonymousGirl yeah if we talk about content for everyone I mean have a lot of videos with almost the same thing... but this one is kinda new to me and im here for it, I think when she said feeling through the eyes is when u r doing some exercise and feel the pressure right there sometimes it even itches
It'd have been a great exercise if its effect lasts more than a few minutes
1-2 minutes? Are you nuts or a deep-sea diver?
