Vocal Straw Exercises (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) Voice Therapy

  • With normal voice production, the lungs push air between the vocal cords causing them to vibrate. In order for vibration to occur, enough air pressure must also develop below the vocal cords. Known as subglottic pressure, there needs to be a match between this pressure and how tightly the vocal cords are positioned together. Vocal problems and fatigue occur when there is a mismatch or imbalance between the subglottic pressure and the vocal cords which are closed together against this pressure.
    Vocalization through a thin straw puts the vocal folds in the most optimum position and shape for vibration. Known as semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT), this is accomplished by creating pressure above the vocal cords to partially negate the pressure from below.
    As such, voicing becomes easier with the better position and shape of the vocal folds, especially to help start a clear easy sound whether the vocal cords are too stiff or too tight from muscle tension dysphonia, or whether they are swollen due to inflammation. Furthermore, a strong clear voice can be sustained for longer periods of time without fatigue.
    A regular drinking straw can be used at first, but as one gets proficient in these exercises, the goal is to use a 3-4mm diameter straw that is 5 inches long. These straw exercises should be performed several times a day for about 5 minutes.

    No me quedó claro si este ejercicio sirve para tener una voz más grave... En otros videos he escuchado que para tener una voz grave no la tenemos que hacer partir de la nariz sino de más abajo, de la garganta. Pero aqui dice que con este ejercicio la voz parece salir de la cara y de los ojos, no de la garganta.
    Alguien podría explicarme?

    • @WideCuriosity
      @WideCuriosity Місяць тому +1

      As I, a total amateur, understands it, different pitches will need different resonant chambers, so lower ones will be in chest area, while higher ones are using various chambers in the head. However these exercises are more about breath control so you need not be so concerned for this particular tuition. Just try to get the results demonstrated.

      @@WideCuriosity Ok, i understand. Thanks for answering me! Do you know, if diaphragmatic breathing exercises really help for a low voice? If the answer is yes, 1) is there an estimated time to know the results? 2) Is the effect achieved permanent or only lasts for a few days/hours?
      Thanks

    Hi… what does it mean if i am struggling to do the exercises through a coffee stir straw?? I went back to the regular drinking straw because i was feeling awkward and like i was choking… so if you could help me understand what i am doing wrong i would greatly appreciate that. :)

    • @jaymiller3238
      @jaymiller3238 4 місяці тому +4

      Your instincts are correct. If you’re struggling with the smaller diameter of straw, you need to use a larger diameter for a bit longer. Smaller straws have more benefit, but you can’t start with smaller straws because your voice isn’t efficient enough at the early stages. Work with a larger straw for another week or two, then try something slightly narrower. (A coffee straw might be too much of a leap.) Remember you’re always looking for a sense of ease. It’s okay to feel some resistance, but you shouldn’t feel like you’re fighting against the straw. Be patient and just enjoy the exercise while your voice develops. The size of the straw isn’t everything.

    I’m not sure how much the general public is going to be able to relate to the goal of vocal production being in the mask, especially when you say things like feeling the voice coming from the eyes…confusion from too much specific information which is geared toward people who study vocal production can lead to frustration and disinterest.
