- Learn how to raise your soft palate and open your voice. This video will help you lift your soft palate to get rid of nasality, make room in your oral cavity for high notes, and add a more full tone to your voice. You will learn what the soft palate is and use two exercises to help you raise your soft palate.

All my life as a singer, from alto to soprano, NO ONE... taught me this.
All I always hear was of "breathing control" and "opening my mouth more". Not one person in my entire life has ever told me about this specific detail.
Yawning, yes. Opening my mouth, yes. But this!
THIS WAS THE MAIN DETAIL I NEVER KNEW OF!
23 years of singing. I watch this video. I can pull off singing high and low without worrying of scratches at the throat, or forcing more air pushes from my stomach.
I'm ready for the solo this Saturday. God bless this video 😭🙏❤
wow, so classical training is a scam?
This is crazy but I’m 23 and have been singing for as long as I can remember and in theatre school I could just never open my throat. I can sing well, but quietly and can’t project much. Every time I tried to sing louder and more open I’d lose the note. And literally today this changed everything! And yes, no teacher had ever told me that before :(
Love your way of explaining. I heard so many times from singing teachers :
" Open your throat. " I was so frustrated with that sentence cause it was never properly explained to me HOW to actually do it. And it never came to my mind to stick a finger in my throath.
Well, now I did.... I felt my soft palate, figured out what is the best position for it and my voice was instantly better.
Thank you

It took a couple months to sing with an open soft pallet naturally, and boy what an improvement in the tone of my voice, my volume has improved (of which I was seriously lacking 😅), and control, and the ability to sing within mixed voice range longer & more steady without cracking, and to sing higher and lower notes more comfortably than when I started! How many days did you take to sing better
This was 2018 so probably not.
Thanks for a good lesson sister, I am Gibson Laurean from Tanzania, as a music learner I fail to distinguish between a head voice and chest voice, and which one is important in singing?
@@gibsonlauren5072 Chest voices are stronger and more powerful than a head voice, which has a breathy tone to it and is a lot higher. They're named so as they seem to vibrate inside your chest or head. I'd say both are important; a chest voice is good for powerful songs with a lot of emotion (take Into the Unknown from Frozen), while a head voice is used to hit very high notes, and often used in opera.

That's puberty 😀
Are we talking 12-23 years, or within your adult life? Cause as an adult your voice does not have to drop, if you keep your muscles strong...
Seems like you're a male so it's pretty normal, your voice muted at puberty
omg this five minute video just helped me out soooo much!!!! I have a problem with throat tension and i’m not sure if maybe it has to do that I am a beginner and timid about singing. sometimes it feel like my voice is stuck in my throat and it sounds flat 😟
I'm happy to hear that the video was helpful! Flat singing can be very frustrating, especially when you are aware of it, and it can make you feel self conscious about your voice.
It common for people, who feel timid about singing, to hold back on their natural sound volume which can make you sing flat. I'd recommend that you try singing out loud somewhere where you feel "safe" and see if you are still singing flat. Working on breath support can also help to get rid of flat singing. Hope that helps :)

I actually felt it being raised when I did the surprising face it was AMAZING 😂
Thank you so much ❤️
@@singgeek but is it okay to do the surprising face in a high pitch or in a high tune 🎶
Thank you.
Medo Fawzy Yes it is, I saw you asked about the larynx earlier. Inhaling with the "surprised face" often lowers the larynx a bit too, which is helpful when singing higher. At one point when you've practiced more, you should be able to raise the soft palate without making the face :)
@@singgeek thank you
God bless you and make your day marvelous 😊😊🙏🙏

Wow! I didn’t know that that was why the two tones sounded different. I have basically done these exercises before, but I didn’t know what was happening that made it sound that way. Cool video!
The thing with my voice is that my voice sounds good for 2 seconds but then I automatically lower my voice and then it sounds bad. Or when i try to go high pitched my throat just closes.

the last step actually works for me. Thank you! I’m gonna try it a little often to help. my mother and sister tend to at times tell me I’m mumble and talk quietly, so I’m trying to fix that.
I've tried to explain how to make this work, but never could - after a few minutes, I was able to feel my palate move up and down - THANK YOU SO MUCH - You are a great teacher!!

I like your videos! I was trying to explain hard and soft palate to a friend, and this is such an easy way to explain. Great information, thanks a bunch!
Such a great explanation. It worked and the change in sound was exponential and real.
Even though I felt uneased about shoving my thumb to the back of my mouth, the yawning sensation helped me get a better image anyways. I'm gonna use it and start practicing with this so that I get into the habit of it.

Thanks for the tips, really appreciate it. Happy holidays!
The best advice I received for opening the soft palate is to completely allow the breathe you inhale to open it for you. As you press the breathe against the diaphragm it will keep the soft palate open for as long as you need. This really helps to prevent straining.
I’ve had so many instructors tell me to raise my soft pallet but nobody ever equated it to closing off the back of my nostrils as I do when I’m trying to breathe only through my mouth… your anatomical graphic showed that it was the same thing! Thank you so much! This was such a breakthrough! Now I just have to practice it- I’ve already found it’s easier to do with Eeeee than with Aaaah, but just a few minutes of practice have shown improvement! Thank you!
That was such an awesome exercise! Thank you!
I love your style of instructing. Very good suggestions. Thank you.

Hi j mc, Thanks so much for letting me know! And good luck with your singing :)
@@singgeek You're more than welcome! Aww thank you!🌹🌹
This was beyond helpful, thank you so much!
Great explanation! Are there any good exercises to do when you feel that your nose sometimes sound stuffed singing phrases in a song (i assume due to lack of control of the soft palate) when switching between say the consonant m and a vowel.
I also found one thing that is really tricky to do if you don't raise the soft palate, and that is to do a normal whistle since all air escapes though the nose.
Now we are going to yawn
Me : okay
Also me: *gags*
i felt like i was going to pukeDD:
Thanks so much this helped a lot God bless you!!
I haven't try this before and if it does work I will be so grateful to you
Ok wow raising it was not as easy as I thought, especially KEEPING it raised! 😅 is that the position we’re supposed to maintain? Because I can’t keep that position without making a weird, constipated face lol
😂😂😂Yeah, that's what it's like in the beginning. Did it get stronger after exercising a few months?
My last singing teacher did this with another student once. The ng-sound is the key. My eye trick is to try threatening someone with the eyes, so they know your voice is about to kill them. The bullets are not being changed from the throat, but from below the diaphrame; or more precisely, from the bottom 😅
Awesome lesson.
OMG!! I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!
I PLAN TO START watch UR FIRST VIDEOS ALL THE WAY TO UR LATEST ONES!!! Subscribed!!
Raising your soft palate blocks off a important resonator, your naval cavity which helps with resonance (and it doesn’t make you sound nasal) which helps and assist the vocal folds and helps you sound more resonant, freer larynx control, helps with agility, flexibility which helps you stretch and reach those higher notes with more ease and it encourages more ring etc. Idk I did this (raising my soft palate) and my voice sounds weird as heck and its harder to do stuff. It could just be me but idk I’d rather have a moderately lifted or moderately lowered soft palate imo.
100% agreed. Exactly what I was just thinking
This is an interesting point about the resonance of the nasal cavity. I do hear more ringing / resonance when I don't raise the soft palate as much. Do you happen to have a source for this information?
