Hey there folks, Mark recently recorded a matchup where he compares pre-AC/DC Bon Scott to pre-AC/DC Brian Johnson. He looks at "Seasons of Change" from when Bon was in Fraternity, and he compares that to "Don't Do That" from Brian's days in Geordie. It's a really fun video, and Mark talks quite a bit about Brian's book "The Lives Of Brian: A Memoir."

Some of those bagpipe players played at Bon's funeral. They also played at Malcolm's funeral. Not sure what they played at Bon's funeral, but I do know that they played THIS song (It's a Long Way to the Top) and Waltzing Matilda at Malcolm's service. Angus said they were Malcolm's favorite songs. One last thing, and I promise I'll stop rambling, I think it should be noted that Malcolm Young passed away from Dementia/Alzheimers. I was taken aback when Angus shared the story of when he learned /realized that Malcolm was ill. He said they were still touring like crazy, and he thought everything was fine, although he had noticed slight differences in Malcolm and even asked him if he was OK. He said Malcolm would always smile and say he was fine. He noticed that Malcolm wasn't spending much time with the band between shows. He was keeping to himself and just showing up shortly before they would go on stage. Angus said that went on for about 4-5 years. He said he finally asked Malcolm what was going on and Malcolm confided to him that he was having trouble remembering how to play the guitar and remembering how to sing. So, whenever he wasn't on stage, he'd go off by himself and he was literally re teaching himself to play guitar and how to sing, and recall lyrics. He did that almost everyday for 4-5 years, and he never said a word about it to anyone, not even Angus. He told Angus he didn't want to upset or disappoint anyone. Can you imagine re teaching yourself everyday, to play the guitar? That was straight up savage dedication. He was the backbone and the nerve center of the band. Everybody thought Angus was, but I feel it was Malcolm.

Bon's voice sounds the way Angus looks....put the two to gether and it is pure rock and roll. 3 or 4 chords a good hook and away you go. Not sure any band couldn't have made it with Bon singing lead. Let There Be Rock might be the last, pure no frills rock and roll album that will ever be made.

Oh boy what a deep discussion! First, I think I should say that one of our members is a professor of music at Texas State University, and he is very fond of saying that we have no idea what bands or songs will be important to humanity 100 years from now. He says that there were musicians in the past that were gigantic that most people have never heard of. Time is a fickle mistress.
But having said all of that, I think I agree with you! I mean, don't get me wrong, I like some of the rolling Stones material, but there's something about their music that grounds it to the time period in which it came out. Whereas with AC/DC, their music feels entirely timeless to me. Anyway, that's just my two cents. But thanks for checking this one out and commenting!

OK, I lied, I'm saying one more thing, then I'll stop. Thank you for reacting to the Bon Scott era. Brian Johnson is an amazing person and he has done well for the band. However, there is nobody who can compare to Bon in my opinion. He had that special something as a front man. He had charisma and a voice that was unmistakable. Not disparaging Brian. Just saying that Bon was special.

With Bon and his bagpipes- his dad Chick was in a pipe band and he was in a pipe band as a kid - but as a drummer. Bon did play the recorder when he was in Fraternity, a prog/folk band he was in before AC/DC - it was when he was touring with them in the UK he met Brian Johnson when he was in Geordie.
George Young suggested the pipes in this song as a nod to the Scottish roots of Bon and the Youngs themselves, and history was made.
Angus was 20 when the film clip for It's a Long Way To The Top was filmed- he was born in 1955, and the video came out in 1976.
It's a Long Way To The Top" was released in 1975 in Australia and New Zealand on the TNT album, and in 1976 in Europe/USA/rest of the world on the "High Voltage" album (not the same as the original Australian album of the same name).

I've recently started re-learning guitar, and I've been focusing on a lot of early AC/DC, and it's been shocking to me how much Chuck Berry Angus throws into the earlier songs. It's so, so obvious all the boys in the band loved Chuck.
I think I mentioned it in this video, but Brian says that Chuck was one of the rudest people he ever met. His band Geordie opened for Chuck, and they even loaned Chuck some equipment, and Brian worked up the courage to ask him for an autograph, and Chuck said "I only sign one autograph a day, and I already signed today's." Brian's mentioned that in several interview and even mentions it again in his new autobiography. It must have hit him hard.

@@LikeMindedLunatics wow, that's a shame about Chuck being so rude. I don't play guitar, but my brothers do, and watching my younger brother coming up and learn the 12 bar blues, learning Jimi Hendrix and rock n roll songs including Johnny B. Goode. You're soon fully immersed. So I can hear and identify it straight away in AC/DC also, including the blues. I was very lucky as a kid to be introduced to good music by my older brothers etc. I was listening to all the blues greats, and other early rock n roll like Little Richard. Speaking of Little Richard, his interviews are great, and he was talking about The Beatles when they supported him, I hope he was as nice as he seemed. Paul was the biggest fan, Little Richard influenced so many of course, including the Stones. I also wanted to say, surely Angus was a fan of B.B. King as well.

And if you haven't read it yet, Brian Johnson's new autobiography is fantastic. Obviously he wasn't around during this tie of the band, but he does describe the one and only time he met Bon. And his description of getting hired in the band is fascinating. He thought he was being pranked. He actually told Malcolm that he didn't believe him, and to wait 10 minutes and call him back to hire him. And Brian said he sat for 10 minutes convinced it was a prank. And at precisely 10 minutes the phone rang again, and Malcolm again asked him to be the in the band.

Wow. Thank you for suggesting that. I wish I'd known about that video before we filmed this reaction. What I find interesting is that both Bon and Brian were part of very traditional sounding late 60s-early 70s style rock and roll bands before joining AC/DC. In the video, Ladi asked me several times what genre I consider AC/DC, and I kept saying "just rock. rock and roll." And I think this video and the others of Brian in Geordie make me even more sure in my answer. These guys were old school rock guys that, when combined together with the Brothers Young, created a rock band that was creating a "new" sound, but really was a sound based in foundational rock music.
Thanks for suggesting that video. It was fascinating.

@@LikeMindedLunatics I guess I can understand the misinterpretation back then, due to the images that some bands portrayed, the lyrics that they wrote, and people not knowing the meaning behind them. There are actual satanic bands out there, that play "black metal" with clear and overt messages belittling Christ and praising satan, and I would never listen to them. AC/DC is clearly not one of them, however, and I think most people recognize that today.

I get the impression from watching interviews with people like Tony Iommi and Dee Snider and those kind of folks that those bands were fundamentally filled with DnD and comic book nerds who just loved the imagery from things like the Monstrous Manual and Marvel and DC, and they initially started using "occult" imagery because of that. But then when they saw the fundamentalists acting like loons and calling them Satanic and using that term literally, they decided to intentionally lean into it to annoy the fundamentalists.
I didn't know any of that as a kid, but I kind of fell into the same behavior. I remember having Trapper Keeper that I'd drawn band names on, and one of the was Iron Maiden. A teacher's assistant starting chastising me for being a Satanist. I asked my mom about it, and my parents weren't religious, so just she explained about how some people think those things are "satanic." So after that I started drawing pentagrams and 666 and all kinds of stuff on my notebooks, not because I believed in anything supernatural because I didn't, but solely because it annoyed those people.

Most of the Rockucation videos are like this one. I try to help rockucate Ladi on songs/videos/bands that are important to me.
The Friday Night Video playlist is a little different. Sometimes I do a deep dive into songs/videos, and other times we just have some beers and have fun.

I just subscribed to your channel, primarily because your approach is about the artist & the music, & not on yourself. Too many reactors are wannabe celebrities. Also, I loved the history lesson. Great approach. Are you gentlemen always together? You have an unmistakable chemistry. Also, the smiles & laughter, enhance the process. Good job. By the way, I am 71 years old & a lifelong AC-DC fan.

What a wonderful comment. Thank you so much. We really appreciate your support and subscription.
The channel was started by Mark (who is in this video and is ME!) and my writing partner Todd right as the pandemic started. We're both writing instructors and we have also been writing partners for over a decade. Before the pandemic we put on live storytelling shows in the San Antonio/Austin area. When the pandemic hit and we couldn't perform live we needed a way to keep sharp, so we started the channel.
Ladi, the other person in this video, is a storyteller and improv artist, and he joined our group a couple of years ago. You can see his performance for The Moth here: ua-cam.com/video/5KcSBiR8yFI/v-deo.html
There are a handful of folks in our group that regularly contribute to the channel, and we try to bring on guests from time to time who we think have fun/unique perspectives.
We try our best to put out videos that capture what it was like hanging out with our friends and watching videos. Most of us are teachers, so that also bleeds over into how we react.
You might like the reaction we put together for The Cranberries "Zombie" video .We spent a good deal of time researching that one, and we're pretty proud of it: ua-cam.com/video/QIKxpI45rGg/v-deo.html

If you want any suggestions/recommendations for more great songs from them in their earlier days, I would highly recommend "Shot Down in Flames " and "Touch Too Much ". Bon and Angus were on fire in those songs/videos. 👌💯

    • @VadersRage
      @VadersRage 2 роки тому

I forgot about "Touch Too Much". The one they never play any more but used to get MAJOR airplay was "Girl's Got Rhythm". The whole album is gold, though. You can't go wrong with ANY of them. My "alternate" faves would be Walk All Over You, Shot Down In Flames and the one we all forget about....If You Want Blood.

There's some great content and insight on AC/DC, and fittingly, Vanda & Young, the highly successful record label. It demonstrates the raw background of Aussie pub rock and even the recording techniques used by AC/DC. You are guaranteed to love it.

@@LikeMindedLunatics I should have replied to this. I grew up in Melbourne which has on of the greatest live music scenes in the world. Things are probably fading now though, but if I took you to some of the great gig pubs in the 90s, you'd drool with the authenticity. These are cultured places. Maybe that's why the carpet's so sticky in these joints.
