I don’t know what it is, but your content delivery is really nice. You have a great voice to listen to, and your honesty is refreshing. Thanks for great content.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Your voice is even better than it used to be and you sound more confident than your earlier content. Are you making various recordings of your voice and stiching them together via editing? I ask this because you sounded a bit different at Blaine, your tone became deeper for a couple of sentences and then came back to normal, like you were a bit closer to the mic for a second take out something. I enjoyed it, but it caught my attention, despite my lack of commenting about it in my thread, where I put some replies so I don't lose your heart.
There are two factors regarding audio. I am working to even this out. I have a fixed recording location with fixed mic / chair positions. But it's hard to get the exact same positioning and angle each day. I'm working on this though. 1) I have a chronic cough and it is worsening. It shreds my vocal chords a lot and makes me sound dramatically different between different days of recording. I'm searching for medical solutions to this right now. 2) I'm learning that I deliver lines different depending on where I am in the recording process. When I first sit down my voice is deeper, slower, and more relaxed. As I go it gets higher and thinner. I think the re-takes all sound different because I am using a different type of voice.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I see. I'm glad to hear you're looking after yourself, I wish for your fast recovery! I actually enjoy that you get more hyped as you go, it really delivers a sense of journey as you near the League (and later the Champion). Really nice video, thanks! You managed to convey the tension of a race even though these two attempts were obviously not done at the same time. Great scripting and storytelling. Well done! :D
Now that I've seen your current content and come back to this, it's really noticeable how much you've improved. I still like the old content I started with (and am finding after finishing that playlist) but it's commendable that you've come so far. =)
Thanks! I always feel like the improvements are going to stop, but year after year I keep noticing stuff that needs to be better. Also, I have been amazed just how far these games can be pushed to get better and better times. Even when I really investigate things there always are small ways to improve routes. It’s endlessly enjoyable.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Definitely! It says so much about the replayability of these games. Gamefreak may have had a heck of a messy code, but look at all the different playstyles that've come from it, and that's just generation one! It also leaves many new ways to discover and improve content, which is what you've been doing!
@@jaycobsimmons218 Hypnosis is woefully inaccurate. But sleep is super broken in Gen 1 so it may be worth it. Gengar also lacks good STAB and even if it had good STAB moves to use, they'd run off its inferior Attack STAT. And the lack of STAB also means it can do less damage than it might seem against neutral targets because the base power of the moves without STAB really show against bulkier mons. Zam's limited movepool only shows against opposing Psychics really though there's also the fact that it has paper physical bulk while Gengar is more like cardboard in comparison.
I’m glad you made this video sir, it actually made me like Gengar more! Thank you for your hard work as always, I am slowly getting caught up on your videos :)
love seeing how differently everyone approaches these challenges! a race with multiple runners competing with the same pokemon would be neat, to see whose approaches work best
Stoked to see this, gengar has always been a favorite of mine. I would also love to see a run with jolteon, flareon, and vaporeon. And also a gen 2 with espeon and umbreon. Love the content Scott!!
Not only is ghost physical in the early gens, in gen 1, there is only a single ghost move that benefits from your stats. That is lick. The only other damaging ghost move in the game is nightshade which deals fixed damage. At least it's not dragon, where in gen 1, there was only 1 dragon move in the game, and it's damage is also fixed (dragon rage).
Ghost, dragon, & bug are all severely lacking moves in Gen 1 for whatever reason. It’s weird that they couldn’t even give each type at least a somewhat decent damaging move
People to bug types: L + you fell off + you’re not in Unova or Alola + you’re not Scizor + Frosmoth can die with all the hazards in Gen 8 + get Quiver Dance or Compoundeyes or some overpowered move like that + no wins + Nuzlocke fodder + only Bug/Steel or Bug/Rock are really good + the creator happened to love catching bugs and this is how he treated you.
I was thinking about it, and I think grinding instead of getting substitute might help gengar as the Pokémon with earthquake which was one of the main reasons that you went down the substitute route, have poor special out side of dugtrio but mega drain could help there and mega drain would help with Rhydon. So you could theoretically with a high enough level wipe them all out (outside of dugtrio) with psychic before they could have a chance to use earthquake. But one flaw with this is that other Pokémon that you used substitute for might be a problem, but at the same time you would be at a higher level so they might not be as big of an issue. So I think that grinding might be a better play
I do believe grinding will be better now. I had Butterfree's performance with substitute stuck in my mind coloring my decision making when I played this. I thought substitute would add the consistency needed to streamroll the league twice without any resets or lost time and just barely edge Alakazam out. Basically it was a gamble to trade Gengar's time lead for the consistency substitute could provide.
This dude is awesome. Definitely in my top 3 poketubers. Can't wait til he blows up into a million subs I'm sure it will be in no time ! And I tho currently new here will be the og listener that predicted it all, just happy to be here:)

If Gengar could learn an ice type move you could stick with Thunderbolt, psychic and mega drain for good coverage. I would try a run with Thunderbolt, Psychic, Toxic and Mega Drain. Maybe save rest if it gets hairy.
Woah, pretty good race, I was sure that Alakazam was going to win, untill I saw their learnset yesterday, and knew it was going to be a close one, but I still thought Alakazam could make the comeback, STAB Psychic with 135 Special is so broken in Gen 1
It's okay! I'm still pretty new to all of this, especially this turn around rate (started work on this video on Monday) so there are things to learn at every step of the way!

I just got to the part where you talk about gengar punching and it reminded me that gengar and alakazan with the elemental punches were great because the punches were special lol but I’m not if you can teach them the moves in this game
Another great video from Great Scott! I'm hyped for the starter showdown if and when you get that done! Anyways, here's some fun facts for you! Fun fact: Alakazam us actually based on a Kitsune, a Japanese Fox Spirit, which are said to be super intelligent and have psychic powers. That's also why Ninetails, who is also a kitsune, but more specifically a 9-tailed fox, can learn extrasensory or psyshock in later generations. Another fun fact: my wife and I are planning to do a Clefable/Gengar gijinka cosplay for Halloween this year! Also, I love the little fourishes of music you put in for when you do battles or go to different places. Reminds me of how in Black and White the music will change slightly if you're walking, or close to certain landmarks on the map. I've been listening to a lot of Pokémon Stadium music since I've been drawing a bunch of scenes of Stadium fights for my next chapter, so, if it's not too much of a hassle, I'd say maybe look into plugging some Stadium music in here and there to break up the monotony of the Gameboy fight music here and there with some classic N64 soundfont. Anyway, I should close this, before I write a novel. As always, keep up the amazing videos, and GLHF on futute challenges!
I genuinely thought they gave you the three starters because they would be the most efficient pokemon to beat the game with, love the series always hyped for new videos LETS GOOO
I love it! “Out of all the PokeTubers I talk about my PP the most, it’s a very important resource that helps with time and I have to keep bringing it up…like my girlfriend.” Dude your sly poke puns are hilarious
The thing about Gengar is, later in the game it takes more turns setting up in order to sweep and those turns take time. Alakazam just fires Psychics left and right and with its high critical hit ratio and Recover it rarely needs to change its strategy.
"Sand-Attacking Devil" and "Time to unleash The Spoons on all of Kanto" earned my subscription. The first one had me rolling, that second one got me hyped because Kadabra is my favorite Pokemon and that is such a dope saying lol. Haunter is my second favorite btw, so this video was an easy click for me.
Gengar lost because of the item collecting time waste, and unplanned TM changing. It should try hypnosis for those 3 pokemons of giovanni and could save much more time. The run was really disappointing, and not fair. Specially while trying to safe everywhere with Alakazam, with Genger you was slacking everywhere, and "forgott" often things to do in the right way. Ofc Alakazam is strong, but getting Gengar that wrong, while knowing Gen1 mechanics, ... dissapointment. Gengar should win in yellow if played differently. You should have know this, while you tried in past challenge a "substitute" option, and lost there much time aswell instead of not using.
I agree that I picked the incorrect strategy. I used it for a variety of reasons. 1. Giovanni, Sabrina, Koga 2. The consistent league run 3. Spending my time lead on something that will add consistency to help with the other important metrics (resets, consistent league time) 4. Bias because I had just used it in my most recent Butterfree video and it really help the Butterfly make it's sleep tactics far more consistent. I felt it would add consistency to Gengar's 60% hypnosis. In the end I agree with you and I want to continue to work on Gengar's run to improve the time. However, I did mention at the beginning that human error is a part of these races. This is not intended to be an objective scientific test.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Thank you , there you are right. Consistent might it be, but when points come for time and points , its not always that easy. In the Butterfree/Beedril run it was more consistent , but there you lost time aswell. I wonder how things would be if the item collecting part would be the rare candys, and using them in points, where it could improve Gengars flexibility more. I know thats not what is the option firstly, but if consistent for league is the question, it can be considert. Was just unhappy as a Gengar fan, however, options are there to use, and so every human use them surely differently. I try myself a bit too, maybe than i can give you some advise if i find one for me. However... i just tried until beating brook with grimer and koffing, i can tell its not as you would imagine, in case of advantage for one side. :)
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I wondered if scrapping thunderbolt for mega drain was a mistake 95 base power vs 40 base power n tbolt can paralyze Also imagine how much less gyarados aerodactyl n vaporeon are when you nuke them Also tbolt destroys water trainer lorelei lol I no she uses ice too n flying trainer Lance convince me he is dragon not flying Champion i agree with possible sub strat I agree my strat maybe rough for Giovanni but I wonder if sub is holding gengar back from optimizing tbolt to its potential in the league
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon there is a huge difference since Butterfree is base 80 special and Gengar is 130. I think Gengar's stat dominance makes it preferable to hit hard and fast. Only going to hypnosis on psychic and ground types. There's only like...what 3 battles of concern right? Giovanni, and then Gary twice.
WOW!!! This guy is great at the game. He really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. The data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.
I assumed Alakazam would sweep from the start, but when I saw "slow start" I just knew it would have to start with struggle. I must say that I'm impressed by Gengar. Despite not having good stab moves it still did so well.
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon you can get the tm for dream eater in veridian city after you have cut. Might help against gio as opposed to going for substitute.

I really like this vs/race style of Pokémon video. It's very interesting and entertaining to watch. Some ideas that come to mind for suggestions are Hitmonchan vs Hitmonlee, Fearow vs Pigeot, Kabutops vs Omastar and some Eveelution race. Vape vs Flare vs Jolt. Especially the Eevee one. That sounds fun.
These dual runs are pretty cool dude. Maybe you could do a dual run between dragonite and gyarados? Both are kinda similar in a few ways: Both are strong physically Both don't have a stab move for one of their types (dragon for dragonite, flying for gyarados) Both have wide tm movepools.
I have an idea for a VERY different versus video. Pokemon BW; Zebstrika vs. Rapidash, with the same races as the gen 1 fossil vs. challenge. 1; Fastest/lowest level starting with pre-evos. 2; Fastest/lowest level starting with the evolved forms. 3; Elite 4 with no resets. It'll be interesting due to the move diversity.
Just 13 minutes into the video and I've never seen someone suffer so much using an Alakazam! Your patience is a virtue! EDIT: It's also great to see how Gengar tanked Venomoth's stab Psychic so well in the battle against Koga.

I don’t know what it is, but your content delivery is really nice. You have a great voice to listen to, and your honesty is refreshing. Thanks for great content.
Thanks! I'm trying really hard to improve the audio. It's been a big journey. Glad you're enjoy the fruits of my labour!
It was the first time that I actually noticed such a change in your voice during the Blaine segment, so don't beat yourself over it, I love your content and expect many more races (or re-races, when you feel up for it) from you! Here's a fan from Brazil. ❤️
19 min head start and the Zam still made an epic comeback, its the OP spoons. Great content.
Really nice video, thanks! You managed to convey the tension of a race even though these two attempts were obviously not done at the same time. Great scripting and storytelling. Well done! :D
I’m fifteen minutes into the video, and Alakazam got to level 16 WAY faster than what I anticipated. I thought it would take hours.
We still know alakazam is going to win. It does everything gengar can do but better. Gengars only hope is a early lead.
@@johnsingletary4864 that's what I'm saying. Gengar takes this. Alakazam is gonna get slapped in the elite 4
Gengar actually should have the edge with a greater move pool and the ability to use hypnosis
So...Kangaskhan vs tauros
Golem vs rhydon
Lapras vs dewgong
Fearow vs dodrio vs pidgeot
Ninetales vs arcanine
Vileplume vs victrebell
Paras vs mewtwo
What? Paras vs Mewtwo? Also, add Rapidash in the Ninetales vs Arcanine dight
Lapras slaps dewgong
Paras with fury cutter should win
love seeing how differently everyone approaches these challenges! a race with multiple runners competing with the same pokemon would be neat, to see whose approaches work best
Should have been Gengar vs clefable, for the lore/theories
@@toxicperson8936 bugs have bad stats and bad moves even if theyre supposed to fall off midgame atleast font make them completly useless.
I’m going through your backlog and it’s amazing to see how much you’ve improved at the game, Scott!
I had a lot to learn!
Thanks so much UnOrdinaryGamers !, I'm loving every moment of making these videos. Can't wait to see what the future holds for the channel, I hope your prediction comes to pass!
I'm really interested in this one because I love both of them.
2 of my favorite gen 1 staples. I can never resist having these special canons on my team.
If Gengar could learn an ice type move you could stick with Thunderbolt, psychic and mega drain for good coverage. I would try a run with Thunderbolt, Psychic, Toxic and Mega Drain. Maybe save rest if it gets hairy.
You are quickly becoming one of my favorite pokemon channels. Keep em coming and keep up the good work dude. You definitely deserve the recognition.
Thanks so much Sam!
Woah, pretty good race, I was sure that Alakazam was going to win, untill I saw their learnset yesterday, and knew it was going to be a close one, but I still thought Alakazam could make the comeback, STAB Psychic with 135 Special is so broken in Gen 1
A rematch in Gen 2 would be neat to see someday. Shadow Ball and the punch move TMs would certainly shake things up.
As an F1 fan I do love hearing about a Mercedes blowing it
Lol that "agatha is next" killed me. Also, your video are getting better and better each time. I love this format!
Yep venomoth is dark/dragon until its galarian form which is grass/flying
AWESOMENESS!! Sorry about the infuriating process of getting this video up earlier Scott's thoughts. This video was well worth the wait :-)!
It's okay! I'm still pretty new to all of this, especially this turn around rate (started work on this video on Monday) so there are things to learn at every step of the way!
My God Scott, the "Not Today!" at the Slowpoke absolutely destroyed me! 😂
Glad you saw that haha
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I must admit, I might be slightly buzzed after the Italy - England shootouts, but that absolutely floored me for the better part of a minute. And obviously I spotted it, I have learned to pay attention because your edit quips are without fault some of the funniest in the Poketuber community!
@@Thuddo likewise. PKs at the end was grueling haha
@@haunter5271 I legit thought my heart was going to give out throughout the entire match, then the PK's took, idk, 5 years off my life. 😂
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon you Definitely scrapped tbolt too soon
I actually think that thunderbolt is too important to lose at the league because it deals with Lance n Lorelei n rival the league members that matter
I also don't think rhydon is a threat enough to justify mega drain
Beautifully done. Just subscribed you and I'm very interested to see your remaining content as well as to see what you'll be coming with.
Keep going, man! You'll set UA-cam on fire with a Blast Burn🔥🔥
Great to have you here Ares!
I just got to the part where you talk about gengar punching and it reminded me that gengar and alakazan with the elemental punches were great because the punches were special lol but I’m not if you can teach them the moves in this game
You can back trade from GSC with the punches, but no. They can't get the punches In-Game
@@priestesslucy I remember doing that back in the day! Giving charmander fire punch at level 6 or ice punch for squirtle. Then trade them back.
@@Undead2death if you're going to do that, wynaut just Move Tutor them Flamethrower or Icebeam in Crystal instead? 😋
@@priestesslucy because crystal wasnt out at the time. Then parents didn't get us it when it came out.
Haha in my other life I may actually be a musician. The musical sync matters a lot to me in these videos :)
Well, that was unexpected to me, great video and enjoy this comment for the algorithm.
I have no information for improving runs; I just really appreciate your dedication and commitment to keeping us all entertained.
I predict that alakazam wins. I watched Jrose11's races.
I genuinely thought they gave you the three starters because they would be the most efficient pokemon to beat the game with, love the series always hyped for new videos LETS GOOO
15:53
Thunderbolt has 95 base power before Gen. 6.
Yup
Back here a year plus later, still one of my favorite race videos ever
Love the absolute skip of bruno haha
You actually read all the comments!! I am impressed thanks for the video and consistency
You’re welcome :)
For Gengar: thunderbolt and psychic seem like they'd be great on Gengar
Should have spent time leveling up over mimic and substitute.
Zam can also fish for Special drops.
And the even funnier thing is that Gengar can do the same thing Alakazam does as well.
Haunter vs Kadabra will be interesting!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon I wondered if scrapping thunderbolt for mega drain was a mistake
95 base power vs 40 base power n tbolt can paralyze
Also imagine how much less gyarados aerodactyl n vaporeon are when you nuke them
Also tbolt destroys water trainer lorelei lol I no she uses ice too n flying trainer Lance convince me he is dragon not flying
Champion i agree with possible sub strat
I agree my strat maybe rough for Giovanni but I wonder if sub is holding gengar back from optimizing tbolt to its potential in the league
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon you could just EV train it
I was surprised at how close this was!
Great match up!
Gengar calling it right now!
WOW!!! This guy is great at the game. He really has a good thought process around the game and he puts together really intelligently done videos. The data and the methodology and stuff is rigorous and we trust his results.
Jinx is final boss.
Agatha is next. Lmao #feelsbrunoman
I assumed Alakazam would sweep from the start, but when I saw "slow start" I just knew it would have to start with struggle. I must say that I'm impressed by Gengar. Despite not having good stab moves it still did so well.
Alakazam is still way WAAAY better in a normal playthrough. If he had confusion at the start...
I knew Alakazam would win, but I was voting for gengar 🤷♂️
Fuck me for reading the comments while watching lol
I love that youre adding actual criteria other than just whos the fastest to these videos
Yeah, time alone isn't the only important thing!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon you can get the tm for dream eater in veridian city after you have cut. Might help against gio as opposed to going for substitute.
I was just scared that Hypnosis would fail and I'd get taken down by Earthquake over and over. Landing Hypnosis against 4 Pokemon is a pretty low probability. I got the TM after him instead.
Another great video, you are really cranking these out. Make sure you take breaks to avoid burnout.
The fact you didn't mention bruno really had me laugh, the outcome was painfully obvious LOL!
But man, I have to correct you; Venomoth isn't a dark type, it's a fairy type due it's pink color! ;)
Might be the third time I am watching this, but you know that content is high quality when you want to watch/hear it again. :-D amazing content.
Whoa! Glad I made something that is worth repeated viewings!
Excellent content and editing as usual. Personally I was a bit perplexed by the choice of giving up on Gengar's thunderbolt
I just realized that Gengar from gen 2 onwards has almost the exact same stats as Espeon. Only their HP and Special Defense are different.
Excited for the rematch! Gengar is my favorite Pokemon so I was rooting for him the whole run!
Great video. Recently discovered the channel and currently watching all previous videos they're very entertaining and full of nostalgia
Man it's awesome to watch you grow on UA-cam, i was around at your first pokemon solo challenge, i worked in one if the hospitals here in town during the pandemic spike and your videos on break was relaxing, I remember when you had under 1000 subscribers and now you're over 13k that's awesome, really excited for that magnamite solo run ha ha 😂 Haunter is my favorite pokemon
That must have been really stressful and exhausting. I'm glad I could bring some relaxation during those times!
First video I watched of yours. Now I am a fan. Love these races.
Glad you liked it!
The video is so neat, I never thought about compating pokemon this way.
Kabutops vs Omastar came out last weekend! Eeveelutions, birds, and Hitmons will happen!
@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon Sounds great!
Great video! The TM for water gun is in Mt Moon to the left of the entrance, but I’m not sure if Alakazam or Gengar could have learned it.
I really like this format, the head-to-head makes even repeated games interesting!
These dual runs are pretty cool dude. Maybe you could do a dual run between dragonite and gyarados? Both are kinda similar in a few ways:
Both are strong physically
Both don't have a stab move for one of their types (dragon for dragonite, flying for gyarados)
Both have wide tm movepools.
It’s Monday and we all know it’s Scott’s Thoughts day
I have an idea for a VERY different versus video.
I love Scott’s train of thoughts in his videos.
Just 13 minutes into the video and I've never seen someone suffer so much using an Alakazam! Your patience is a virtue!
EDIT: It's also great to see how Gengar tanked Venomoth's stab Psychic so well in the battle against Koga.
Are you possibly thinking about a team rocket themed run? lickitung, arbok, meowth, weezing. Also i literally lold at the not giving Alakazam Psychic
Damn, Jrose11 is packing his bags! This guy here is the new king of Pokemon Challenge Runs!
Haha that is high praise. Jrose11 is still great. I am happy to be a part of the Pokemon content ecosystem in a small way now!
