Honestly I'm not a fan of either but looking at both and considering it's gen 1 I definitely expected butterfree to dominate. Their movesets alone suggest it.
I’d love to see Hitmonchan vs Hitmonlee in yellow. Or Hitmochan vs Hitmonlee vs Hitmontop in Gen 2. Edit: Actually this versus could only be done in gen 2. As Hitmonlee cannot learn any move in gen 1 that would damage ghost types. Which, due to Agatha's existence, means Hitmonlee can't beat gen 1 at all.
A fun run i suppose, but let me tell you right now, Hitmonlee will win both generations, Hitmonchan is...well, quite shit. You see all those fancy punch moves it can learn? Well, those runs of its awful special attack stat(or special stat, as it were) in the first 3 generations. In addition, hitmonlee is faster and stronger(with better fighting STAB), so its an easy prediction.
2 things you didn't try for Butterfree ; Mimic and Substitute. Mimic for Lance to copy Ice Beam and 1HKO everything on his team. Substitute whilst asleep and you can safely sweep and just set Sleep Powder up without taking damage. Also blocks status moves.
The bug is actually that it makes it impossible to land a critical hit, rather than decreasing the chance. This is a ctually useful in combination with setup moves, as it prevents critical hits from negating your setup :p.
Technically if you use setup moves using Focus Energy would be helpful, since crits also ignore attack buffs and defense debuffs. This means a crit can technically do less than a normal hit, so if you're aiming to sweep Focus Energy can be beneficial.

Physical attackers are actually strongly favored in Gen 1 because there's only a handful of resists against Normal spam that is easy to tech against (Mega Drain and Surf are learned by quite a lot of Pokémon and they can punch through the Rock/Ground types even on bad Special stats) and a lot of non-normal physical moves can deal with the handful of Ghosts (a lot of physical attackers can learn Earthquake). Special attackers often lack the attack stat to properly hit through specially bulky mons they can't hit super-effectively and/or resist their STAB moves. Even Psychic Types can get slowed down quite a bit by opposing Psychic types.
Amazing video. I loved the joke you told. I’d love to see a Jynx vs Mr. Mime run (although they’re more even in modern generations with the fairy type), a Machoke vs Alakazam run (although it’d be fairer in gen 2), a Hitmonlee vs Hitmonchan run (a couple of these you’ve done solo), Arcanine vs Ninetales or Muk vs Weezing. For Johto, I’d suggest Girafarig vs Stantler, Miltank vs Tauros, Espeon vs Umbreon, Gligar vs Sneasel, Tyranitar vs Dragonite, Ledian vs Ariados, Magcargo vs Quagsire and Wobuffet vs Sudowoodo (battle of the mimics) Sorry to spam you with ideas. I made sure they had similar BSTs (no more than 10 points apart) but I didn’t really account for movesets. Some of them are a pair of powerhouses while others… not so much. I tried to think outside the box for some of these. Magcargo and Quagsire, for example, have the same BST and have two opposing types. I also have a lot of ideas for if you ever decide to leave Kanto and Johto on a voyage across the sea to Hoenn or on a trek north through the mountains towards Sinnoh. Again, sorry and thank you for the great video.

Oh yeah!!! I knew my girl Beedrill was gonna win! My favorite pokemon takes this challenge like it was nothing! Just a side note, I did not expect Hyper Beam to be in its move pool at all, so you definitely surprised me with that. I knew she was gonna know swords dance, but yeah, Hyper Beam was a major surprise! That's why I love ur channel man, you always keep me on my toes! Ur strategies never cease to amaze me! And I really did love that you put up a point system rather than just timing as the definitive victory, as it's probably the more interesting part of the entire run. I do still like that you point out that Beedrill would have won in speed in a straight run rather than one where saving is involved. So good job man, really loved this video, it was definitely my favorite so far!
Beedril is always a pokemon I wished was better, so this was awesome to see :) Butterfree still definitely earned your respect and adoration! Sleep is a strat that feels super unsafe w/o lots of saving, but it showed that isnt the case :)
Butterfree has Sleep Powder and has Psychic type moves which gives it a huge advantage over Beedrill at least at first glance The only disadvantage I can see is that the part Flying type would give it more weaknesses in some areas
Wow, I am honestly pretty impressed on how this one turned out. I was banking all my money and rooting for the presumably underdog beedrill here with you during the splits. Who would've thought that stinger had so much hidden firepower! Like, I've always disrespected It because of his performance versus Brock but now my eyes are opened. Thanks a lot for that! And what a beautiful editing your videos have. I really enjoy going back and seeing all your improvements over the challenges, it's so much fun! Can't wait for the next one!
Beedrill is my favorite Pokémon from Gen 1, and I actually bred a shiny one for ORAS! Bugs being my overall favorite type, I love seeing these two insects putting in work XD Great stuff here, this video was a great watch.

Keep up the awesome work Scott, much love.
Thanks so much Nullex_, I am enjoying this journey so much. At each stage I feel like I am climbing a mountain and then I realize that there is another one on the other side. With everyone's feedback and my consistent work I'm so curious to see what my content will look like in several months or a year from now!
So, I have some advice for the Lt. Surge puzzle. Firstly, after you find the first switch you can save and reset if you don't find the second on the first try. Secondly, there are a few patterns the switches follow that you can look up for an easy way through each time if you want.
Thanks for trying to help :) Saving and reseting is not a valid strategy in Yellow. It works in Red/Blue but not Yellow. There is a glitch in Yellow where it is possible for there to be no 2nd trash can. In the case you constantly reset you will just waste time. Check out the speedrunning documentation on it.
The Loser Other UA-camrs Favorite Pokémon: Lucario, Blaziken, Sceptile The Chad Scott Favorite Pokémon: Butterfree, Dunsparce, Qwilfish Just kidding, nobody’s favorite Pokémon is a “wrong”, or “bad” choice. Be nice to everyone, they have their reasons for loving Muk and Stunfisk as much as you love your favorites :)
@@styyxus5558 Muk, especially in Gen II and beyond, has always been a very tanky poison type that can take a hit and hit back HARD. I, personally, have always liked Muk, especially once its special defense went up to base 100. I always liked to take a Muk from Gen 1, teach it Body Slam via TM, then transfer it to Gen II, then teach it Curse, Rest, and Sludge Bomb to go with Body Slam. Once set up, it's a very hard Pokemon to take out if the opposing Pokemon doesn't have a powerful STAB Ground or Psychic attack in its moveset. Even if matched up against a Psychic user though, Muk's high HP and base Special Defense would normally make it a 2-3 hit KO, giving it a chance to OHKO the opposing Pokemon in return before it could be knocked out. The same could be said for powerful Ground types, unless that Ground type was set up with attack boosts. So yeah, Muk is a good Pokemon, even if it might have been outclassed in later gens by other Poison types. You could do a lot worse than Muk though. Can anyone say Arbok? Lol.
Another great video, well done!!! As for your release schedule, I'm OK with getting only one video per week. The quality of your work has improved immensely since you started, and I'd hate to see a drop in quality just to increase quantity. Of course, if you can get more episodes out per week without burning yourself out, I'd be extremely happy too!!!!!
Thanks for the concern about me burning out. So many people have expressed that and it means a lot. I'm trying to put in place processes that allow for content quality to improve (or at worst maintain at the current level) while increasing volume. Not sure I'm going to have everything up and running for a few months though. Waiting out the GPU shortage and trying to find some additional people to help me with some behind the scenes stuff...
So, your hindsight as to how you performed in your previous videos reminded me of when I turned on my copy of B2 after a few years. Setting aside the fact that I had no idea what I was doing in the game, I was going to reset it. However, I had learned a lot about the games, stats, mechanics, movesets, etc. I opened up my Samurott's summary to check his movesets and I looked to see what I could only describe was the shittiest moveset. Literally 3 water moves and no coverage. I laughed so hard, reset the game and now Samurott is better. I am still trying to figure out EVs and IVs, though. By the way, Scott, your video commentary was relatable this week and that's what made me remember about that all-water Samurott. Made me laugh at what a noob I was until I actually decided to learn about Pokémon. Keep up the great work!
It really comes down to the league. During the Gym Challenge, give me Butterfree all day long. But Beedrill is just so much more equipped to handle the Elite 4 and the Champion. Awesome video!
So true! Butterfree feels so good throughout the Gym challenge until like Sabrina, Blaine, Giovanni. In that portion neither of these Bugs are particularly well equipt. But for the league. Beedrill baby!
Finally getting around to watching this. Work has been killer recently. Good stuff man keep it up 👍 Edit: 2nd watch. Beedrill against Bruno was great. It’s great how Reflect was used right off the bat to boost speed. Also good explanation of the text based system during the champion fight. This is definitely a solid and detailed improvement over the original bug run.
Absolutely loving these challenges! I'm really looking forward for the Omastar VS. Kabutops challenge. I thought that was the next one in line, but oh well. I'll look forward to it when it comes! :)
This is why when Butterfree is blessed with compound eyes and better flying moves it's a beast! I'm shocked with how amazing beedrill preformed in the late game, I have some new found respect for it. :D
I knew brock would cost beedrill a lot of time but the bug moves really did more than I thought and swords dance hyper beam did the rest. I’m so used to hyper beam being underwhelming in later gens grats on a great video
Our boy is learning! But yeah, learnsets are finicky in Gen I, however super damaging moves like Hyper Beam, Double-Edge and Solarbeam are always a solid choice in solo runs.
Rewatching this now you can see how he became more excited in the newer videos. And i feal like you only realize this when rewatching old videos. Still amazing
Beginning to wonder if Toxic might have been an option for Butterfree once it hit the league. Could have stalled and healed with Rest as Toxic wore down the special walls. Great video, very interesting.
Beedrill is a frickin' champ late in the game with the Swords Dance! It's amazing how easily it cuts through everything when you've got the 3x SD with Hyper Beam. It also helps that Beedrill does have above average base ATK. Butterfree is the more versatile Pokemon but it doesn't have that combination of moves it can learn where it can just clean house.
Just because a fan, and I’ve started watching all your videos. I wish more people would sub. You have great content, and it’s VERY rare for me to see a UA-camr get more views per video than the total amount of subs they have. But keep it up, and I promise you’ll make it big.
While more viewers is obviously the goal, the smaller size of the community allows me to read all the comments and interact. I’m just so grateful to be able to do this and share it with you!
Personal opinion/preference: Some fights when you are at a potential hard or dangerous fight you spoil the resault at the start of the fight. It would be more interesting if your comments are either not spoilery, or if they are slightly delayed so they synch better with when it happens in the video:) (It could be spoiling the whole fight, but also smaller things like missing a crucial attack or an fortunate/unfortunate crit) All in all, I think delaying the sound a second or so would solve most of those things c: Also, great work!
Thanks for the feedback. I am actively aware of this and am working on it! By the time content releases it's been over a month since I started production on it. I became very aware of the issue you mentioned after this script was completed. Expect this to begin to improve over the next month or so.
Hooray! Beedrill was one of my favourite gen1 pokemon. Even though its not wonderful in battle, I always loved its design. Interesting that it lagged most of the run, but made up for it in consistency against the elite 4. My experience with him was that he was great as long as you could set up so that you could beat them before they got the chance to beat you. He's frail but can become fast and/or powerful with the right movesets.
Probably could have got closer to Butterfree's initial time if I had optimized and made less miss-plays against Blaine. Overall Beedrill just feels much more consistent.
I think you could make a drinking game for this video by taking a shot for every time you say PP haha. Love your vids, I look forward to your next one. Also loving your growth. It is much deserved my guy.
Not sure how I missed this video when I was binging your whole video list. Anyway, I was surprised at how much better Beedrill is than Butterfree. I figured the badge boost glitch would work in its favor more than sleep powder would for Butterfree, but not saving during the E4+ really showed how broken the badge boost glitch is. I think in FR/LG this matchup would be a bit closer, although Beedrill might still win due to how impressive swords dance is.
Check out my followup video for this one. There is another incredibly powerful strategy for Butterfree to use that I missed the first time around. ua-cam.com/video/1RccVysN7_Y/v-deo.html
As a kid i always had teams with sleeping tm's, i remember Wiglipuff with the singing tm and mega punch, jynx with kiss and ice beam, haunter with hypnosis and night shade, butterfree with sleep powder and psychic.
That moment when the Rock Tunnel Hiker is consistently harder than the Indigo Plateau Hiker lol. Maybe if Bruno had 2 exploding Golems instead of two weak Onixes he'd be more of a challenge.
17:00 Well, it's not all that strange if you think about it. Most Grass types in Gen 1 are also Poison type, the two are practically synonymous, so is it really so Farfetch'd (eh? eh?) that a Poison type Gym leader would have a Grass type on his team?
Seeing Butterfree fans shout they are going to win while us Beedrill fans are quietly confident...and our confidence is well placed.
Oh yes I would definitely want to see that too
I second this... I need the gen 2 head-to-head-to-head
Only if they are named Jackie and Bruce.
Yes! All three of them against each other in gen 2 would be interesting
A fun run i suppose, but let me tell you right now, Hitmonlee will win both generations, Hitmonchan is...well, quite shit.

Substitute whilst asleep and you can safely sweep and just set Sleep Powder up without taking damage. Also blocks status moves.

It’s nice to see Beedrill win. For all its flaws in later generation, it has just good enough moves to sweep everything in this generation.

Venomoth is clearly Ghost-Grass. It's purple just like every one of Agathas Pokémon, the GHOST type trainer.
According to the TCG, it's a Psychic/Grass type!
I appreciate the extra effort you went through to make Venomoth show up as Psychic/Flying in the Hall of Fame ^^
What extra effort? It's on Sabrina's team it's so obviously Dark/Steel type.

Wow, not the result I was expecting! Beedrill really did a great job even though it had a slow start.
Wait, Beedrill gets Hyper Beam? That's crazy! I never knew that! How would it even fire them out?
In the Stadium games, Beedrill fires it out of the stinger on its butt. 😐
@@GMJ7 OK, that's kinda funny actually.
How anything fires hyper beam?
Beedrill! Yours is the drill that will pierce the heavens!
(For real though, missed opportunity to name it Simon)
Beedril is always a pokemon I wished was better, so this was awesome to see :) Butterfree still definitely earned your respect and adoration! Sleep is a strat that feels super unsafe w/o lots of saving, but it showed that isnt the case :)
You should have used mimic with Butterfree to get an ice move, would have gotten past Lance much earlier.
A mega bee drill run would be super fun to watch. Keep up the good work, your my favorite Pokémon UA-camr!
Butterfree has Sleep Powder and has Psychic type moves which gives it a huge advantage over Beedrill at least at first glance
The only disadvantage I can see is that the part Flying type would give it more weaknesses in some areas
This entire run was a Giggity!
Scott: "I do the Rocket Hideout for two reasons."
Me: "Money and power?"
Scott: "Money and Swords Dance."
Me: "Close enough."
Bugs being my overall favorite type, I love seeing these two insects putting in work XD
Great stuff here, this video was a great watch.
Thanks Doctor Dischord! That’s awesome that you got a shiny Beedrill! I’ve come to really like it as well!
Great to see you go back to some of the early challenges to see how much has been learned on this channel 😁
Great video, as always!
Dome fossil best fossil, also I've really enjoyed your journey on this channel, you always sound so excited when you learn new info and expand your knowledge and power. It's nice to watch people grow both as people and you can tell you genuinely enjoy it because you aren't mean or anything from the advice, you are purely grateful and appreciative for what we as a community teach/show you and my gosh i just enjoy you as a content creator.
When you're doing a solo run and you take the time to tell use which fossil you take. Gold. I laugh every time.
The Loser Other UA-camrs Favorite Pokémon:
Lucario, Blaziken, Sceptile
The Chad Scott Favorite Pokémon:
Butterfree, Dunsparce, Qwilfish
Just kidding, nobody’s favorite Pokémon is a “wrong”, or “bad” choice. Be nice to everyone, they have their reasons for loving Muk and Stunfisk as much as you love your favorites :)
i love Muk don't know why but it looked so cool to me as a kid
Lol.
Yes Finally more videos! I already know this video is gonna be great!
Good stuff man keep it up 👍
Edit: 2nd watch. Beedrill against Bruno was great. It’s great how Reflect was used right off the bat to boost speed.
Also good explanation of the text based system during the champion fight. This is definitely a solid and detailed improvement over the original bug run.
Glad you enjoyed it! It is a big improvement. But I still have some thoughts on these two... Stay tuned.
And when you give an eevee a cookie it becomes an Oreon
Thanks Scott. As always, love the video! Excited for the Fossil challenge next week.
Watch the follow up too! Did better with both of them ;)
Whenever i'm feeling under the weather, ill just run to this channel and watch 😊 thank you!
I knew brock would cost beedrill a lot of time but the bug moves really did more than I thought and swords dance hyper beam did the rest. I’m so used to hyper beam being underwhelming in later gens grats on a great video
As a Brit would say A fight between the little buggers
Our boy is learning! But yeah, learnsets are finicky in Gen I, however super damaging moves like Hyper Beam, Double-Edge and Solarbeam are always a solid choice in solo runs.
I somehow really love beedril's design, I wish he gets a good buff to make him more fun.. aside from a mega
He did get an attack buff in the base form.
It's pretty neat seeing your journey as a UA-camr, keep up the great work buddy
I'd love to see a Pidgeot run, if not a Fearow vs. Pidgeot run. I'd love to see the birds fly through!
Loving each of your videos
Rewatching this now you can see how he became more excited in the newer videos. And i feal like you only realize this when rewatching old videos. Still amazing
That Eevee joke. I don't know whether to applaud or sigh.
I knew my boy "Pikachu" would make it! Way to go my buzzy buddy
Great runs and it great to see how much you have improved in your runs and content Keep it up
Beginning to wonder if Toxic might have been an option for Butterfree once it hit the league. Could have stalled and healed with Rest as Toxic wore down the special walls. Great video, very interesting.
I've always loved Beedrill, easily one of my favorite pokemon. I mean come on, it has giant spike things for hands. That's just cool
I missed an opportunity to talk about how cool it's spike hands are........
Don't be too hard on yourself. At least you got Venemoth's typing right
25:42: Twin-Needle is only Super-effective vs Arbok. You are actually dealing neutral DMG vs all of her other Pokemon. Bug does 1/2 DMG to Ghost.
Indeed. Thanks for the reminder ;)
Would had absolutely thought Butterfree would had won...wow...awesome content ! Subscribed!!!!
Muk vs weezing ,dodrio vs fearow, electrode vs. Magneton. Awesome video
Personal opinion/preference: Some fights when you are at a potential hard or dangerous fight you spoil the resault at the start of the fight. It would be more interesting if your comments are either not spoilery, or if they are slightly delayed so they synch better with when it happens in the video:)
(It could be spoiling the whole fight, but also smaller things like missing a crucial attack or an fortunate/unfortunate crit)
All in all, I think delaying the sound a second or so would solve most of those things c:
Also, great work!
That's a good idea haha
I'm so glad youtube said “Hey check out this video here” and now I'm here, addicted to your videos, keep it up. Huge hug from Brasil.
Hey Pedro, glad you're loving the videos! Huge hug from Canada.
"dome fossil. Obviously" gotta love you man.
Can you get to Golduck already? Its my favorite gen1 Pokemon.
Venom Moth, its poison/bug right? I legitimately have no idea anymore!
Reality is bending.
Your videos are great. Can’t wait to see what you have for next week!
Thats awsome to see level 100 butterfree using HYPER BEAM! Booyah
Let's see a Seaking vs Seadra run. No one ever uses those water types in gen 1, so we don't know who's better.
>Becomes a Patreon
>Think this ISNT cringy AF dad humor.
Scott you cause me immense physical pain with that joke. Sweet christ
17:00 Well, it's not all that strange if you think about it. Most Grass types in Gen 1 are also Poison type, the two are practically synonymous, so is it really so Farfetch'd (eh? eh?) that a Poison type Gym leader would have a Grass type on his team?
You're right. I see it now. Grass / Poison
YESSS My favorite pokemon of all time won
Glad I could add some content to make your night better
Oh. And speaking about Spore, it would be interesting to watch a Parasect run. That run would be very hard!
I'm going to do Parasect :) not sure when, likely the fall unless I seriously learn how to produce these faster!!!
Me: DOME DUDES GATHER!!
Girlfriend: NOO HELIX!
I’ve been watching so many of your videos now - I really have no idea anymore what’s venomoths actual typing 😂
Reality is bending and falling apart. Soon it won't have an actual typing.
Really happy to see your growth brother. Keep up the good work.
And thanks to Dennis 🙏🏻
Indeed. Thanks to Denis.
