    Fun fact: if you can guarantee Ghastly, you can guarantee Abra without the game corner if you keep Mean Look. So long as it's decently leveled, it's speed is comparable and you can stop it from teleporting instantly. And if you still have issues catching it, you can use hypnosis and night shade to guarantee that you won't knock it out.

      It’s not a guaranteed encounter because you might get Jigglypuff or Ditto instead on Route 34. There are different encounters on Route 35 and if you miss both of these then it’s Game Corner or Kanto.

    28:51 There's a hidden Repel on Route 32 in the tall grass to the left of Picnicker Liz just before Union Cave. Just tested on Crystal version and with decent pathing, you CAN get through Union Cave the first time without any wild encounters. Since Repels can be bought in Azalea town, right after Union Cave you only need to get through it once. This opens up Lapras as a team option if you're willing to put in the effort.

    This is why I consider species clause to be a buff, it gives you much better control over your catches, especially when you realise you can use repels and an appropriately levelled pokemon to narrow down encounters even further. One of the reasons people speak up in favour of using Rare Candies is also because the optimal play would be levelling up against pokemon you are certain you can oneshot.
    It's not "The Graveler can kill my pokemon by self-destructing, so i use rare candies".
    It's "The optimal play to avoid risky situations is to farm against extremely weak pokemon for 5x the time, so I use rare candies".

    I have a few variations to nuzlockes that I think are laregly in keeping with the rules and spirit of the run, but one biggie specific to Gen 2 runs: Sacred Ash. As Ho-oh canonically revives the dead, the Sacred Ash is a full resurrection item, usuable on a single Pokemon. As exploits are typically not permitted, there's no duplicating it.
    It's a get out of jail free card, but it's the only one you get. If you REALLY want to be lore specifc, it may be used on a total of 3, but for the leniency it grants already, restricting it to one seems the most reasonable.

    The fact that you have to grind up 2 separate teams in order to get through the Elite 4 and Kanto makes it hard to imagine a more suboptimal game to Hardcore Nuzlocke.

    I would love to see future nuzlocke runs from you. It'd be really cool to see you break down your thought processes for difficult trainers like this in other games. There's a whole world of ROM hacks that I think it would be really enjoyable to see you play through that have become challenge runs all by themselves. I don't think that many people on youtube have done these games either. Basically just pChal.

    Geodude/graveler soloes pretty much this entire generation. Chuck and Pryce and Claire are problematic, but one lanturn solves the first 2 (or an electric + flying type, with piloswine taken out by a water type you should have), then the last one can be a battle of attrition if you have your own water type, which you should have multiple because of fishing.

    I'm guessing that this is going to be very difficult, simply because of GSC's awful level scaling, You basically need to get 7 badges before passing Lv 30!

    The unfortunate thing with Sneasel is it can't take advantage of its stab types, similar to Gengar and a bunch of other gen 1-3 Pokemon. I'm still shocked that Ghost was physical and dark was special, when most of those Pokemon felt like they were the opposite specialty, with exceptions like Houndoom and Banette. The moves themselves almost felt like they should have been the opposite split (Ghost having Shadow Ball, and every single attacking Dark type move from gens 1-3 are now physical).

  • @axdambient
    @axdambient Рік тому +6

    I'm wondering if it's viable to save Shadow Ball for Snorlax for late game. He learns it, you can Curse and Rest with a Mint Berry. Just a thought I had while watching. Great work as always!

    27:22 explains Seal learns icebeam at 37 and dewgong at 40. Has a dewgong at 37 with icebeam. Assuming maybe seal learns it at 36 and 37 was the target level that you can, at the earliest, have a dewgong with icebeam?

    Heads up, generally in Hardcore Nuzlockes you are still allowed you use over leveled pokemon. The generally accepted rule is you have start the battle within the level range, so a lot of players "edge" and keep their best Pokemon one battle from evolving to try and have a slight edge on the leader. Just wanted to point this out since I wasn't sure if you not using your lvl 10 Totadile was a misinterpretation of the rules or self imposed.

    It's a bad idea to use a level 20 Magikarp. Gyarados learns Bite at level 20. That's a really useful move for Morty.

    • @reillywalker195
      @reillywalker195 Місяць тому

      I'd honestly just hold out for the Red Gyarados at Lake of Rage since other Pokémon can learn Bite and since the Red Gyarados has the powerful physical move Thrash. The Red Gyarados is also guaranteed to have a nearly perfect attack DV of 14, so its physical attacking power is tough to beat.

    Key part to hardcore nuzlockes is what you said: find your win conditions (win cons). What matchups will give you the least amount of resistance, what back ups do you have to cover that, what are the LOSING cons for the boss battles and how do you avoid them

    Weird take on the Janine level cap. I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually do that before. Most people I've talked to usually just set the Kanto level cap at Blue's ace, since you can do them in almost any order, and most have around the same level teams.

    4:22 I think you're the only person I've seen play a hardcore Nuzlocke who applies level cap even inside the battle. Usually hardcore Nuzlockes allow you to level up mid-battle and there's even several strategies where some Pokémon are grinded to a point where defeating the first Gym Leader's Pokémon will level them up. So technically, you played a harder variant of a regular hardcore Nuzlocke.
