Snorlax vs Snorlax - how much does Amnesia help in generation 1?

  • Amnesia is really broken in generation one. So, I've been curious just how much it would help a run Pokemon throughout Kanto. Snorlax was the logical choice to test with! It gets Amnesia as a part of it's initial move set. Today I'm racing Snorlax against Snorlax to see if Amnesia will yield a benefit in completion time and / or completion level.
I believe I will make a followup video to this one. There are several unexplored strategies in this video that I briefly discuss. I'd like to see how those play out as well. If you'd like to see that video, comment so that I know!

I wouldn't count Snorlax out if I were you. Although Snorlax has high attack, Snorlax has a lot of tricks up its sleeve, like its unique access to Amnesia and Thunderbolt, as well as a crushing STAB Hyper Beam. It'll be tough to see Snorlax match that firepower, even if Snorlax is one of the best mixed tanks in the game.

@@ScottsThoughtsPokemon You should find a way to remove the time lost due to your misplays from the final times. Otherwise, your races are inaccurate. You already skewed the Magmar vs Electabuzz race because of your misplays. If you want truly accurate results, then you should take human error out of the equation. Note: I'm not saying replay these races. I'm simply saying remove the lost time caused by your mistakes from the final times.

Never thought of this concept. Performance of the same Pokémon, one with a boosting move, and one without. My hypothesis is that Amnesialax will be easier to do, but take a bit more time because of setup, bit Regulax will be a tiny bit faster because it's fighting without a boosting move. Especially the most broken boosting move ever, besides Power Herb Geomancy.

I commented this on another vid, but it got reuploaded so I’m writing it again.
Scott, I feel like you’d enjoy a concept I came up with, that I don’t think exists yet.
In my theoretical ROM hack “Pokémon: Barely Blue”, the classic Red/Blue is improved not only to balance the game far more than it is/isn’t, but also make changes based on preconceived notions. For instance, Gyarados is Water/Dragon, Venomoth is Bug/Psychic, and Gengar loses the Poison typing. Movesets and Encounter tables are changed as well- for some quick examples- such as Psyduck and Venonat being found on Cerulean Cape, and the Bulbasaur and Zubat line learning Acid.

Scott, I just had an idea that might make good use of how you list the mon's movesets on the side of the video. I like that you have their base stats and moveset. Consider this suggestion: as you progress in the game highlight the moves the mon knows in green, highlight what it used to know in red, and highlight what you're considering or have considered in another color. Just figure this would make more use of the movesets rather than just having them listed off to the side of the video. This one was fun to watch.

With Persian, you immediately have access to Screech and Bite (which is 90 base power move when you factor in STAB, 180 with crit), and later access to Pay Day to cut time form running to the Pokemon Center cause you can buy potions easier, and a decent Special stat to take advantage of Bubblebeam and Thunderbolt.

I forgot what my first was, but I know it was a fire type. I was in love with fire types in the first two gens. I think the first I leveled to 100 was either Arcanine or Charizard. It was one of those two for sure.

Sometimes it's cool to see someone beat the game with just a zubat or something but if you get to lvl 100 you can beat almost any pokemon game with anything it seems. Super cool to see a comparison between the same pokemon with different strategies.

This was a good run; if you ever consider doing this in the future, I'd really recommend seeing how well Snorlax w/Amnesia does with Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, and Psychic for a full offensive set, with the TM for Rest kept for the E4. I think the special boosts, even with Snorlax's lower special, will help you sweep though the mid game a lot faster since its special will outclass its natural attack stat most of the time and it's moveset will give it superior coverage. I honestly think it's natural bulk in the early game + speed badge boosts in the late game will carry it a lot further than expected until Rival 6, especially since your modern rules allows for use of rare candies and with calciums, and even portions of the E4. The Rest TM will be more useful in the late game exclusively to give you flexibility in the early game without sacrificing healing in the tougher end game fights. You can even delete Ice Beam for Rest just before Lorelai, then delete Psychic for Blizzard right after beating Agatha for Lance.
