When did millions of tons of steel and concrete perched on a waterway or beach become more appealing or better in any way opposed to a boat floating on the water ? Even if it’s an older boat !

I don't have waterfront but I do have plenty of properties and I wouldn't want it to happen to any of them. And I sure as hell dont want to have to wade through a homeless encampment every time I go to the boat ramp.

As a native Floridian, I can safely say this has happened for over 30 years in Florida. The issue is that the top 0.05% of the money in South Florida does not want the "little people" to be able to benefit from access in any way. They believe that the area is theirs and theirs alone. They believe that they should be able to come and go with their $10,000,000.00+ yachts without having to seethe "Scraps"

I live in palm beach county and when you go over the bridge onto the island the police look for many reasons to pull you over. I don’t know how bad the rules are for boats but unless you’re driving a car that’s over 100k they will keep their eyes on you. There are some decent people there but many are a-holes.
You should report that Valero gas station to the authorities. Ripping off customers with an improperly calibrated fuel pump is a felony.
It may be a case of him overfilling the can? They do hold more than 5gal in a lot of cases unless the pump is not calibrated correctly? Who knows.
@@gobfranklin6759 overfilling won't get you more than a half a gallon. So even if he filled both to the very brim (and he did point out that he stopped at the 5gal line) there would still have been more than a single gallon in that can.
That station is deliberately ripping people off. Also, the PRICES! Holy crap! That owner is a straight up THIEF.

If you go to a place overseas where a lot of poor people go on boats you will find the waters surrounding those boats to be full of diseases. Derelict boats becoming floating RV parks is ruining it for responsible cruising boats. Easiest solution is to limit a particular anchorage to 14 days before requiring more than 5 miles away. These derelict boats are environmental hazards and safety hazards to responsible, seaworthy vessels nearby.
I live in St Augustine and I wouldn’t keep a boat anywhere outside a marina for any period of time if you want to keep your winches, electronics, rigging, etcetera. Unfortunately a significant number of meth head goons living on the hook in derelict immobile vessels (way worse since Covid) clearly have ruined it for the rest of the sailing community. Add to that dismasted boats sinking adjacent to the water way, with their rigging just below the waterline at high tide just waiting to sink someone. The county is not doing nearly enough about it. Someone is going to get seriously hurt. I’m all for visitors and travelers enjoying their rights to our waterways, but floating tent cities full of thieves and creating submerged unmarked hazards, and contaminating the river with black water and fuel indiscriminately has to end. The number of used syringes I’ve cleaned up on the beach used by a youth sailing program adjacent to one of the common anchorages is unacceptable evidence of what I’m talking about.
I disagree. Maybe those meth heads are just living with trauma in there lives and had to escape to sea.. (I have not seen a meth head ever) .. just men mis understood.. Living free away from tyranny. I don't get any meth head vibes from any of these Men. These people are traditional Mariners they are just trying to live with what they have free from the BS on the internet and cable news..

A few people ruining it for the rest that follow the rules even if they are unwritten. A free mooring ball maintained by the city isn’t and never was meant to be a permanent place to keep your boat. It’s for transient boaters to spend a week a month etc. it’s the honor system. Spend some time there and move on. I don’t care how nice your boat is or isn’t how rich you are or aren’t. It’s not permanent mooring. So now because of a few floating junkyards basically squatting on a free morning it’s going to ruin it for everyone else. Boats on a public mooring should absolutely be required to operate under their own power. Boats are expensive if you can’t maintain it and have permanent storage don’t own it.

The derelict boats are the problem and with people living on them the problem gets worse . Usually without holding tanks they pump their sewage straight into the bay . The real sailors who maintain their boats properly and are respectful of the ocean end up with fewer and fewer places to anchor . Free anchorages will soon become a thing of the past .

I live in South Florida, and the problem got really bad after Covid. It seems to have gotten worse with the derelict boats and the junk boats everywhere. Then when people decide they’re gonna abandon them, they pull the decals and the Vin number off so it can’t be traced back to them. They abandoned them they sink and the state has to pay to get them out and it seems like a lot of riffraff around Miami and Coconut Grove on those boats, that’s why people don’t want them around

Here in Alberta, we are only allowed to camp for free on Crown land up to 14 days after that you must relocate and you’re good again for another 14 days. It’s no big deal and it makes sense.
Yeah I think 45 days is too much for many areas. We want to keep it as free as possible but there is a hippie boat movement that youtube kinda got started. Its the source of a lot of the problems. People with just enough money to get a barely floating boat, and not enough money to fix it. People with not enough money to take care of themselves, can't afford a mooring ball much less a marina. Not saying you need either but if you can't move your boat onto the dry, into a slip, or fire up the motor reliably to leave then when we get a hurricane those boats end up on the bottom, in the mangroves, on the rocks, crashed up against bridges, ect. And those people learn it cost more to retrieve the boats than the boat is worth, or more than they have and leave them right where they are. They become an environmental hazard, navigation hazard, and are even uglier to look at than when they were floating. The taxpayer pays to remove them. The way Florida law works with derelict vessels there is little incentive to try to clean up your mess and some boats that can possibly be rescued by people with means can't because unless the owner signs it to you there is no salvage law that will allow you to legally take possession. I have seen very nice, easily salvageable sailing and power yachts left to rot when someone like me would have definitely saved them. One close by me has probably a few thousand dollars of scrap metal on the deck alone.

got out of control with junk unseaworthy boats as well. The port kicked everyone out and installed moorings that they charge by the month for. The boats need to get a safety inspection by the Coast Guard before you are allowed to lease them. They also require a yearly inspection.

So if you are just passing through and need to anchor overnight, go ashore and buy supplies, how does that work?
@@wahid-lg1kk Here in So Cal we have 24 hour temp moorings, or slips, for that exact purpose. We also have several places where you can anchor near facilities and shop at the fuel stations, or the Chandelery, and food mkt. I never have had a problem if I called ahead to harbor master, or took a short term rent on a mooring at Catalina, or Channels Islands where most of my ocean sailing is.
You should definitely call whatever state agency is in charge of gasoline weights and measuring. Kind of an ironic turn having to utilize a state agency to right a wrong.
I had a similar thing happen years ago when my Chevy Metro with a 7.8 gallon tank suddenly took over 10 gallons to fill up. I called and reported the station and they eventually got closed after several large fines for repeatedly doing the same thing. In my state (Washington), and other I am sure, they actually have unmarked cars with dummy measuring tanks that they use to check the rate at gas stations. The stations don't even know they are being checked. Still it is an understaffed part of the state government and they do depend on tips to know who they should be checking.
Yep there's a sticker on that pump with the date that it was checked (calibrated) and stickered/dated as such.
Phone number* is on the sticker. If sticker is GONE, go to ANY other gas/fuel pump to get the phone nunber.
If the sticker is missing, that's their first violation.
REPORT THEM.

Unfortunately, it’s the only affordable housing in the area. It’s pretty normal to see people living on a boat that hasn’t moved under its own power in years and is just a floating apartment. My advice for Mike is to watch his back. Those are pirate waters.
@ozarksailor2714 True but leaving South Florida should be the goal. South Florida is where I grew up. I doubt my quality of life would be what it is now if I tried to stay. I left with nothing but my car, clothes and the hope to find some work. It worked out. Knowing what I know now, I would have done it even easier today despite it being more expensive overall.

Yup. Too many “existaboards” who on land would be living under a bridge have ruined many places for the rest of us.
As a boater, I hate to say it, but there are a very few people out there who ruin things for the rest of us. Not saying there aren't stuck ups in the rich neighborhoods and towns who think they own the world but there are some boats and people who shouldn't be out there because they are a danger to themselves and others.
The real issue is when storms come in and the boats break off there mooring and hit boats in the marina/clubs/homes and the owners have no insurance or funds to repair damage caused by their property. I am a member at a club where your video started and this happen to me a few years back. My boat was damaged and the owner of the boat that broke loose had no insurance or funds to pay my repairs. So I got stuck with the bill. There has to be a limit on the boats moored and they should pass laws to have a minimum of PIP insurance. If the boat doesn’t have a valid registration they should be removed all together from any waterway. This is a real issue and the transit boater will be affected must once laws are in place. Also it’s starting to affect the keys which needs to be stopped before it becomes an issue like in south Florida.

Do you think it would be better for these people to be homeless out in the elements? I myself was disabled from a Refinery chemical release so I live on my boat because I have no income and it's the cheapest way for me to survive. The instant you mandate insurance insurance rates. Increase by several orders of magnitude. Many can't get insurance because they have to come up with thousands to get the boat surveyed then it is only 250 a year for liability insurance but $5000 for haul out survey and then any repair deemed to be needed so yeah let's move these people off the boats and under the bridges, then we can make sleeping on public property illegal and spend millions more jailing these people talk about penny wise and dollar wasteful.
If a storm rips my boat off of its moorings and damages your boat my insurance company is going to claim act of God and fuck you over in the proverbial snow there buckwheat.

This is an issue that was approached some years ago well before Desantis was governor. (just to give a time perspective) Its not new This issue was that there are (or were) THOUSANDS maybe tens of thousands of boats essentially abandoned on the various waterways all around Florida. Some had people living on them defecating into the water, washing clothes in the water. walking around naked playing loud music etc. People basically living in a tent a mere few feet from your home.(not a mansion just a normal house) If you want to live like that go to California etc where they not only support that lifestyle they embrace it! These boats wee not sailing or traveling it is a tenement on the water feet from your home.
The bigger issue is hundreds boats that were simply rotting away, their owners died, or simply abandoned them. Repairs to make them "seaworthy' again far exceeded the value of boat when it was new much less in its current state.
This is the heart of the problem. Envy is not the issue. Tax money is not the issue the "muh freedom" derp is not the issue. So the solution will be ( unfortunately) Paid moorings and short terms on those moorings. So the boats don't pile up, get abandoned and and rot away becoming someone elses problem.
If you are going to be away for an extended time. Haul the boat and put it on the hard. ( its better for the boat any way.)

Really well in a recent report where police raided a number of boats only one seemed flush overboard they did their tests by flushing due through the toilets.

They have been fighting about bum boats and cruisers anchoring since I lived there in the 80’s..
What happens is the "bum boats" become hazards to navigation after the next big storm. Brevard County FL just cleaned up the Indian River & guess who gets to pay the bill ..
Blame the boaters for not policing themselves. Living in coastal Fla, we see the issue. Just homeless camps on the water. A lot of them end up washed onshore after a storm, leaving the taxpayers to haul their crap off. Plus, they have no insurance for any damages!😡

That’s a stupid statement. Boaters can’t arbitrarily police other boaters without legal authority. Even if they were granted the legal framework to do so, there would be violent confrontations and time/effort expense involved. Why would the legitimate cruisers do that? That’s why we have professional law enforcement.

As a lifelong Floridian born and raised in Miami. I now live in North Florida. The Anchorage and long time,, mooring balls, living in a designated Anchorage area. I believe all vessels will need to be fully insured, the derelict and sinking of these vessels, ends up being the burden of the taxpayers of the city and state. Wind up having to remove these at our cost. This is what created this special type of legislation in the first place. We have too many derelict and sunken boats all over the state that has created a massive environmental problem, navigational problems. All these costs fall back on the taxpayers of Florida. Has the taxpayer here in the State of Florida and someone who truly enjoys all the outdoors recreation that has to offer, I don't think I should have to pay for somebody else's poor seamanship skills, and there inability to acquire insurance for their vessel.
Not to mention contaminating our beautiful earth.

u called the florida department of standerds and messurments right their 800 number is on the pump they are required by law to test and make sure those pumps pump exactly the amount you pay for call the number and report the station
I'm surprised that you didn't immediately call the state regulators when your pump delivered less than 15 gallons, it seems off by about 5%.
You take pictures of the pump and your containers and send them too.
Violations cost them money. And force them to repair their pumps.

What is the capacity of your yellow diesel cans? When I first got mine, I bumped into the same issue. Puzzled, I read the side of the cans: Capacity - 6 US Gallons. Red gasoline cans are 5 US Gals.
I purchased these cans from home depot in Vero Beach. 100% new cans 5 gallons. Machine said 14.7 it pumped maybe 12 gallons. It's odd. Some one needs to go fill up and measure..

Financial responsibility should be enforced upon every individual whether seaman or on land. Leaving a boat that may cause damage to a person or state without insurance or financial proof of payment is unfair to everyone. I don't like to make insurance companies rich or to have excessive laws but when people allow lower nature and negligence become an expense to others something needs to be done. We are better than a third world country.
Times are gone when the abundant middle class could live on the Miami shoreline and while others could afford a nice sailboat and look after it in the bay. The middle class has grown much fewer in number while the very rich and very poor have increased in number. America no longer has the opportunity for a good living as it had decades ago. Government politicians are incapable of sustaining a healthy economic balance, but instead have let the economy go to ruin. It's a shame. The USA was the peak of human civilization until the government messed with it.
Blame the banning of new canal communities. Used to be developers would just dredge 5 miles of canals and create another 500 new waterfront lots. At that time living on the water was only 10% more than living on land nearby. But once the canal ban went into place, the prices of waterfront property skyrocketed. Now you'll see an EMPTY LOT with sailboat access sell for over a million, while an empty lot across the street that's landlocked might be $150k.

The problem started 5 years ago in Seattle. These homeless have found they can get these boats at the recycle yards for free OR they find some idiot that took on a project boat that got out of control and snatch that for free. These boats have leaking holding tanks (sewer, black tank) generally no operational water tank(s) and incredibly unsafe cooking setups (they catch fire a lot).
All their sewage goes directly into the water because of leaking tank or NONE OF THEM can afford a pump out service and then you and your kids swim in it. SMH disgusting people, so disgusting!

Call me pessimistic, I've already seen too much. I spent time in Hollywood North Lake, Lake Sylvia, and lived in South Beach, and Miami. The rich people don't want to see the poors. Florida is leading the way in criminalizing anyone not making 6 figures. This is a front in that war. I anticipate cruising will exclude more and more of Florida, and specifically the South. Crossing to The Bahamas from West Palm, Port Everglades, or No Name will become a thing of the past. West Palm Beach will become the new demarcation. You can expect many other places to follow.

I can understand their concern for boats in disrepair. There should be a system for logging who is in the anchorage and how long they have been there so there is room for new boats coming in to stage for the trip to the Bahamas. I think they are killing income for the city by banning these transient boats.

The fact is, there are FAR too many boaters who squat. You know who I am talking about. The barnacles who muck up the area with their dilapidated boats. They screw it up for everyone else.
I think short term......one week or less would be enough time to provision and take a few days to rest would be fair......the long term stuff just brings in the riff Raff.
To many people took advantage of a good opportunity now people have to pay the price

Super disapointing is what that is. I anchored in Biscayne Bay for 4 days coming up from the Keys. I understand not wanting derelict boats anchored about but come on! Headed to FL in the next couple months to put my boat back in the water and hopefully get her the hell out of Florida all together. Fair winds sir!
This is south Florida. Not all of Florida is so unfriendly. Anywhere the rich have waterfront they will do this. Same happened in California.
We use to have a squatter living next to our property here in Texas but I gave him plenty of grief over and over and finally the neighbors started the same and the creep moved on.

It's a gamble in some places, in others the boating community is very helpful and respectful. If there's no hitch post or cleat, a mushroom anchor will usually suffice if you can't drag up on shore 🙃
They can't have you living property tax free. You are putting nothing into the system. And they can't keep jacking up your taxes.

Thank you for the video. I am anchored at the Miami Marine Stadium and we are becoming to get harassed by the authorities as well. I can understand that because of the derelict boats and abuse of SOME of the vessel owners, the need to regulate anchorages but you can’t throw out the baby with the bath water. At least in the MMS anchorage I can assure you that the environmental impact is mostly from “weekend boaters” who come into the area and not the ones anchored there. BTW, that is not the “Miami River” those are the Miami Beach Canals. I grew up fishing those!! Smooth Seas and Fair Winds.
Recycle the bathwater at least.
My family came to Miami in 1919 my Plan B if I ever lost all my money and didn't have a place to stay was to get a small boat and anchor out but as the years have gone by I can see that as less and less possible but years ago there were a lot of places you could anchor out beside the main anchorages I think there's still a liveaboard community at Coconut Grove at dinner key but I haven't been there in 10 years. For a long time I lived on a houseboat on the Miami river W 27th Ave. where Delaware Parkway goes over the river I subscribe to your channel good luck
My concern is about the future of the liveaboard community. In years to come will they out law us? Food for thought.
There are so many abandoned and trash boats all around Miami and Miami Beach. It's awful.

I have no dog in the fight because I neither live in Florida nor do i cruise anymore.
But if you are incensed by this ask yourself this question. Why would anyone in south Florida want you to be there?
It's not like you add anything to the economy. No fuel purchases, no mooring ball purchases, force bridge openings disrupting traffic, dinghy to shore to use free facilities, minimal restaurant visits etc.
Many do anything they can to not even get their waste tanks pumped.
Look at all the vessels with the yellow fuel tanks on the deck just to get an understanding. And 1 guess as to which country they are mostly from.
Its all take and no give. The Bahamas figured this out and at least charges $300 or $600 balance it out a bit.
Cry me a river but until you become a valuable and welcome contributor to the local economy and not just a mooch then this is what you get.

Call the Dept. Of Agriculture, they are in charge of gas station pumps. Major fine for them, and ask for the rest of your fill.
The same thing is happening in the bay off Marin County in California. There are many derelict boats that have not moved for a long time. Like Florida, it is boaters against property owners.

This is WHY… it started in Seattle and has spread east. Homeless commandeer boats that barely float and make it their homeless camp which seems to be a “recycled home” and a good thing BUT there is some very serious problems with it.
1. No working black tank (sewage) so it goes directly into the water…. Massive environmental problems.
2. No money to have working black tanks pumped out so it gets dumped directly into the water.
3. They sink very often and that’s not only an environmental disaster but the state has to pay 6 figure money per boat to have them removed.
It’s ironic that these are the same “save the planet” people that are doing this while destroying the water ways. SMH
We need that in Brevard County. We are over the abandoned boats. Good.

@sailingEV888 ok I see, it's like 30 euro a day in summer and 15 ish on winter.. some are cheaper and some are way more expensive. Navily is a good app I use to check prices. I haven't seen manny liveaboard here in biscay.. but in france there were manny and maby there will be more in mediterranean. 3 days where this one nonstop but it's been so cold and rainy so life have been on hold for like a month until now🤗

Report the weight/volume issue to the state agency over weights and measures. That station will be in a lot of trouble.

It was weird. I was told by an old salt to weather a storm in the venetian Islands. I anchored there in good weather and was immediately removed by police. Why? I was not looking into rich peoples yards! It just felt wrong and unconstitutional. However. I'm just a snowbird from Canada leaving the USA within days. I'm just worried about our future as Mariners. America is the land of freedom. With out that the rest of the world will suffer including Canada 🇨🇦
It's everywhere you have multimillionaire properties on the water. Doesn't matter where. The city will cater to their donors and largest contributors to taxes. Sane thing happened in San Fran. Same in cities all up and down the west coast. The wealthy paid good money not to have to see us. Only boats they want to see passing their windows is Mega yachts.

Bums are everywhere so don’t feel to bad about it in Florida. Boats, campers or tents they aren’t too particular how or where they manage to find a comfy spot. Meanwhile some non-wealthy boater with a modest boat wants to drop anchor in a snooty area gets harassed what do you expect. My boating experience got me close to many yachtsman in New England and it wasn’t a warm and fuzzy time. However, what I know about Miami it might be worse there.

It is unfortunate that many municipalities are acting to restrict anchoring, (This is happening in places like Sausalito, CA) But, from what I observed at Key West, I can't say that I blame them. There are so many derelicts anchored permanently around Key West that it is virtually impossible for a cruiser to find a spot. Fantastically, Key West provides free moorings forever. The moorings as well are unavailable to cruisers passing through. The mooring field is full of derelicts. The derelicts are a general hazard to navigation as their rotten ground tackle often fail, causing the derelicts to cut loose. There's also a sanitary aspect as I suspect that many, many derelicts are direct discharging fecal matter into coastal waters. Perhaps a compromise would be allowing anchoring for 30-45 days, and require vessel inspections. Captains should be required to prove that their vessel is navigable and present servicable ground tackle. But all this would necessitate the hiring of marine peace officers.
Good stuff! Really sucks how inhospitable they are to boaters! Odd how longtime maritime law can be skirted also.
This is for sure a two way street. There is for certain a need to clean up the abandoned, hopeless wrecks which litter the seascape, but on the other hand, an area can quickly become a snobsville AKA denying the public the use of WHAT IS AND WHAT SHOULD BE public. In many areas including here in the N of Idaho, too many public asses has become over regulated and restricted access on the pretense of some "safety" or other.

It's hard to find live aboard marinas anymore on the entire Gulf Coast.
Over night or up to a week is about all there is left.
And the ones left are full, and charge a kings ransom per month.
In key largo at the jewfish creek bridge there are several liveaboard boats tied to the mangroves without power anchored with room air-conditioners. Monroe county does not seem to care. there are also derelict half sunken boats in the area. drive down US1 and you will see some of them. Drive to Gilberts and the blackwater Siren and you will see many more. some of these boats are actually in hurricane holes and they sit for years. to use the dinky dock you must be friends with the ramp owner. launching a power boat is 50 dollars.

While I dont agree with regulations against peoples lifestyle choices and how to live their lives leaving boats unattended for more then 5 months of movements are going to be a problem eventually. They have to be used and moved around. Sort of like RVS have a No more then 45 days of stay is good for free Then you move. Thats not a bad deal..But its also not a good deal to have to go to these hidden out of the way gasoline stations for gas to avoid a ticket. That should not be a issue. Everyone should be able to go to an gas station as they need.
Again this is about them catering to the rich. There are a dozen marinas you can get gas at without even leaving your boat. For double the price of a land based gas station.
