Part of the reason SHS is so entertaining, besides the obvious sailing adventures, is because Sam as an artist has a real talent for filming and editing. Sam dislikes editing and tried using outside help for a few episodes (that were actually still good under his direction), but his style is what engages viewers and makes us few like we are along for the ride. It's a unique talent that can't really be taught; you either have an intuitive feel for it orvyou don't. The ironic aspect is that it represents Sam's "job" that he does to earn a living from YT.
Damn Sam! Back at it! You are living an amazing life and I am envious! Being old now, (59) and disabled, I have to live vicariously through your adventures and you are an amazing young man! Yep Sam, run that motor. We call those reliability runs for the reasons you say (dry everything out, make sure it works) and reveals small issues before they become big. Thanks for reminding my why I'm a day sailor (bored!).
I enjoyed a 17 day Atlantic crossing of smooth sailing with a few bumps (naturally) along the way compacted perfectly in a one hour video. This was very enjoyable. I will continue to follow.
Hi Sam, nice to see you looking so much in good health after your Atlantic passage. Watching your videos lights up some memories for me. I've only done one crossing, Honolulu to San Francisco on an 71' aluminum ketch rigged sailing catamaran named the Canvasback. We motored the entire way after having several drums of diesel fuel set onto the deck to extend the range. It reduced the freeboard to a point where some people told us that we were nuts to set off like that. I didn't know any better at the time. My favorite day was getting into a school of small bluefin tuna and pulling in one after another on the hand line like you have. That was the first time that I'd ever tasted fresh bluefin sashimi and I'll probably never taste any as good as that in my life yet. Keep up the good effort Sam.
After a week or two offshore food does tend to become a huge focus, finding it (fishing), cooking it, eating it, thinking about it, dreaming about that all-important first meal ashore (imho second only to securing that first hot shoreside shower)
As a fellow sailor, your channel reproduces the feeling of sailing better than any other. It's not easy to capture the wave action with a camera, well done.

Great videos Sam, as everyone already said! Your channel is awesome, you’re so brave! I’ve sailed since I was 7 years old but never attempted anything like you! Total legend! Stay safe and enjoy. Brilliant content!
I love this channel because it just goes to show you that if planed right and making good decisions you don’t need a half a million dollar boat to make dreams come true! I’ve read forums where some of the most technical sailors say there’s no way you can cross oceans in a 1960s old boat under 40 feet without the absolute best luck in the world yet I have found more boats that has crossed major miles of blue water under 40 feet than fancy yachts mostly sitting dockside

Great video, Sam! I crossed from the Canaries to Martinique back in 87. Never saw any sargasso grass at all. You made really good time. Big "WOW" on the spreader swingin in the breeze! When I saw that, I thought OH SH*t. It was a good thing it was not very rough when it happened. I had to go up and cut the jib halyard that jumped the pulley and jammed at the top of the mast as a squall was approaching. (hank on sails). No steps, just clinging the mast in a bosons chair. It's a wild right up there, as you know, even when it's not real rough with the amplification from the height.
Sam this is one of your best videos dude. You're an amazing sailor Sam I love the way you explain the wind vane the preventer just untangling the main halyards you're just crazy good. I just wish I had your Stones when I was younger.
4:34 Wing on Wing Downwind Running in Overtaking Seas always makes me happy 48:48 those weed patches are great to toss jigs & drop bait down by, in no to low wind. I regret nothing. great upload again as usually always, Sam. gongrats on the successes. that’s badass destination with kickass everything. cheers
Sam worked for Disney...This is all Green Screen and Fans. It does look real, but he's really in his garage at home. he has random women throw buckets of water at him too. Busted Sam!!
Nice video. I sailed to Antarctica and back on a tall ship once and battling the waves is definitely a love/hate affair for me. Hearing you mention the constant rocking brought back memories for me. You’re a real sailor!
Another great video! I love the honesty you put into your videos. You talk about the boredom and (sometimes) confusion that results in undertaking a voyage like this alone, as well as the beauty and peace of the sail. Makes for very interesting videos.
36:05 - proof: 2 boats heading in the same direction = it's a race. And then 39:34 - some REAL OPEN OCEAN SAILING with Sam... and 46:42... like a cork in a washing machine?! "Young Man And The Sea". Amazing how you filmed and edited this journey down to less than an hour documentary. Well done, Skipper! 55:41. "Welcome" banner is in the sky.
That feeling of "this is my new reality" is so satisfying and always seems to come at 7-10 days into any long voyage/expedition. Another great, inspiring video. 👍
I discovered Sam's channel quite by accident when I was in Hospital recovering from some surgery which I could have done without and watching all of his videos helped me forget my worries and put the smile back on my face That was several years ago and I'm still smiling so thankyou from the UK Sam.
Captivating video Sam it's quite the adventure. I'm sure a lot of it doesn't translate over the camera like panoramic sunsets, bright moon and stars, 8 foot swells, and rolling up on the mast. The boat's wear is starting to show and it's brought you incredible places. I agree it would be so cool to see you in a larger boat and interesting to see the new set of responsibilities that brings. Barbados looks to be a welcoming paradise after various African ports and a long ocean crossing. Safe travels Sam and happy new year. 🙌
I am 52 and want to start sailing, your videos are a great inspiration. I love that you sail in a budget boat, unlike a lot of videos i watch with expensive and large boats.
Fantastic video Sam. Having made many solo ocean passages myself 2:49 in my earlier years your videos always bring back extremely fond memories. How you keep a smile on your face when your spreader rips off the mask is beyond me. Best of luck, Sam.

Hi Sam. I really enjoy your simple yet powerful sailing videos. Not many of us watching could cross the Atlantic Ocean on a 28 foot boat. The fact that you have done this more than once, is a tribute to your sailing skills. To have a smile on your face brings us all good cheer as you spend HOURS alone on a boat among the elements. I always like to food shots and night shots as well. One cannot underestimate the importance of hot food on a boat at sea. Food does taste better on a boat trust me and one gets VERY HUNGRY while at sea. Keep up the great simple work Sam and you deserve to make $$ with your dedication. I am glad you have not chose to buy a bigger boat yet as the 28 footer is just big enough to get the job done. Keep up the great inspiring work. Could I sail alone across the Atlantic. Sam this is one of your best videos dude. You're an amazing sailor Sam I love the way you explain the wind vane the preventer just untangling the main halyards you're just crazy good. I just wish I had your Stones when I was younger.
Great content
Thanks so much for the support!
Best sailing channel, no doubt. We love seeing Pickle sailing and is always a learning experience, too. Thanks Capt. Sam 👍👍😁❤️
4:34 Wing on Wing Downwind Running in Overtaking Seas always makes me happy
48:48 those weed patches are great to toss jigs & drop bait down by, in no to low wind. I’ve pulled the best-tasting Cobia & Tuna from under patches…and it gives someone board AF something to do. I’ve also busted course bearings for hours while cyberslacking video games on solo sails. I regret nothing.
great upload again as usually always, Sam. gongrats on the successes. that’s badass destination with kickass everything. cheers
Dude, the shot with the dolphins is one of the best sea pictures I've ever seen
Man I just been glued to UA-cam waiting for your next upload. God bless you pal thank you for doing what you do.
Its so nice watching your voyages. Feels like I'm there. Missing sailing with my Dad.
Cheers from Maine. I wish for for you a safe passage and great memories made. Your are a truly a legend. Solo sailing is ballsy.
Sam worked for Disney...This is all Green Screen and Fans. It does look real, but he's really in his garage at home. he has random women throw buckets of water at him too. Busted Sam!!
Love watching your reels Sam. You are one cool customer. it looks so free out there. thanks for taking us along !
Thanks for the New Year's day video. Really enjoyed it. Amazing how you can fix everything that happens.
Thanks so much for the support!
Nice video. I sailed to Antarctica and back on a tall ship once and battling the waves is definitely a love/hate affair for me. Hearing you mention the constant rocking brought back memories for me. You’re a real sailor!
Very cool.
Kind of missed these oldie-but-goodie videos of Sam pure sailing and enduring. Happy New Year!
Another great video! I love the honesty you put into your videos. You talk about the boredom and (sometimes) confusion that results in undertaking a voyage like this alone, as well as the beauty and peace of the sail. Makes for very interesting videos.
27:00 Strong Gollum vibes there, Sam!
Hey Sam, greetings from Finland and the Åland Islands. Thanks for another great video and good to see you made it across safely. 👍
So much good stuff in this episode, including Myst and that fishing system. Great episode to learn about sailing downwind
The legend returns 🙌
That feeling of "this is my new reality" is so satisfying and always seems to come at 7-10 days into any long voyage/expedition.
Another great, inspiring video. 👍
We all need a Cape Dory. Built like bricks.😊
Enjoy your time there! Happy New Year, Sam. I hope 2025 brings you everything you ever wished for in life.😊❤🤗👍🇺🇸. Thanks for bringing us along!⛵️🌊💨🌦️
West an epic solo sail Sam, well done buddy. Here's a couple bucks towards fixing your spreader.
You're the best! Thanks for the helping me stay on the water!
You should to a poll to see how many people were laughing at you learning about a key to open a metal can....LOL
Glad you had a safe trip.
Started really following you around the time you were headed East on this big adventure.. Please don't ever stop. It's so enjoyable to watch.
Thanks Sam Holmes, cannot wait to see what happens next. ❤
Fantastic video Sam. Having made many solo ocean passages myself 2:49 in my earlier years your videos always bring back extremely fond memories. How you keep a smile on your face when your spreader rips off the mask is beyond me. Best of luck, Sam.
Myst and Riven were awesome. I'll have to play them again. Thanks for the sail.
Great video as always!Looking forward to the next season around the Caribbean.
Spam, spam, spam, Sam the man ! legendary singing!
Doesn’t some boat maker see this kid as worthy of donating a first rate vessel? His love for sailing is second to none.
at least a sponsorship from Ryobi!
Don't discount the bones of that old Cape Dory ... those are never say die ... but I think a cat of some sort is in Sam's future
@@fredmuellerphotographer4532 No, damn it! We have too many UA-camrs with cats. Besides, Sam isn't the beach bum with a yacht/sail occasionally/check out after three months type.
@@fredmuellerphotographer4532 Sam isn't rich enough for a cat. Yet.
@@initdeityou people are so jelly of all the channels living the dream! Just go do it instead of hating. You still watch all those channels, and you know it!
hugely entertaining and inspiring as ever...waiting for the spring here to get going again with some small scale adventures
Another awesome video. Thanks bud! Nice to see somebody’s warm -30 Celsius in Northern British Columbia today. happy new year
No way as I know myself. I would be sick often and not seeing land for days on end can play with you mind no doubt!! Go Sam go! David E in Palm Springs from the safety of his 2 bedroom condo on the second floor. Elements? What elements? LOL!!
