    The Veloster N is like an affordable dream car
    It’s got anti-lag system, a slick 6-speed shifter, and it’s got a manual E-brake to be a hooligan!
    Props to Hyundai for this car!

      @Peder Hansen you are comparing one country with an entire continent.
      Europe has seen far more wild hb's over the decades than the US.
      If you buy a hb for looks or to impress others with aesthetics, youre doing it wrong. Not that hb's cant look good they are a product of utility moreso than a coupe for instance.
      Veloster n is a nice package no doubt but its not all that cheap for a Hyundai hb, with largely old design no less, if it starts near 30k. Ive seen 2.0t camaros at $20k new. To be fair, its more that ecoboosts like the stang and fist of course and camaros are very competitive. Ive seen new fists for around 18k, which is also lighter and has a huge aftermarket.

      It retards ignition timing thus combustions becomes unefficient and not complete and depending of how much retard More Fuel escapes the combustion Chamber and ignites inside the hot exhaust manifold, Also, no Fuel added, Is just that the Fuel overrun cutoff Is retarded for a bit so it doesnt cut Fuel when letting off.

    I couldn't agree more with you.
    I test drove the Type R which was a little quicker, but I had so much more fun in the Veloster N, which feels more engaging and involving.
    I also prefer a smaller, more agile nimble, tossable, more go-kart like car.
    The car that came in second for me is the Ford Fiesta ST, which Unfortunately are not sold any more in North America.

    Guy I work with has one, the sound of the exhaust is amazing in person. Like wtf? Sounds better than a GTI/R aftermarket setup. I've sat in both, and if I had the money I'd still take a GTI or R, simply because a better seating position, better interior.

  • @skifree0
    @skifree0 5 років тому +4

    Surprising you said it's lighter...because it's actually a fairly heavy car for it's size (and technically the N isn't even the same size as the others mentioned)
    A civic Si is the lightest as 2899lbs
    Then is the GTI at 3062lbs
    Then the N 3106lbs
    Then the CTR at 3120lbs.
    (all the numbers are the lightest "listed" weights)
    Perhaps the lightness feel and tossibility just comes from being smaller and the shorter wheel base...

    • @buildmorefarms1007
      @buildmorefarms1007 5 років тому

      500 Abarth has them all beat in the lightness category and has the pops and crackles that the CTR and GTi lack.

    • @tommieboi707
      @tommieboi707 5 років тому

      Matt isnt really a track guy. I doubt he knows what "tossability" really is. The civic type r can hang the rear wheels out like a drift if you push it hard enough. And it corners at a way higher G then the n. If anything the type r is the more tossable car.

  • @toddastorino7685
    @toddastorino7685 5 років тому +2

    As a Type R owner, it has 3 huge advantages over the Veloster N--the seats and the shifter and the brakes. The first 2 are absolutely the most important aspects of a performance car, as you need to be comfortable and supported and in addition, you need a communicative and smooth shifter and clutch which are top notch in the CTR. I won't criticize the Veloster N, though, as it is maybe 80 % of the CTR for a $5-6k lower price. I give Hyundai kudos for making an attainable performance car that is way better than a GTI, or for that matter, something like a WRX which is similar in price but using old technology.

    • @npaul4171
      @npaul4171 5 років тому

      The CTR is a more capable car, and in a different class than the N. Hyundai's suspected mid-engined hatch will likely be the car they position to compete with the CTR. The N is dramatically less-expensive, and commonly the price difference is more than 5-6k when considering the N can be purchased well-below MSRP (as the PP N can be purchased for $28k pretty easily here, assuming the CTR is sold without markup for straight MSRP, it's an $8,000 pricing difference at-best.)

      Likely because this car doesn't really have a direct competitor. Hyundai intentionally priced it in the class of the GTI/WRX/Si/ST, but put its performance between those cars and the higher tier R/STI/CTR/RS, so its really not clear where this car belongs. It will probably get even murkier if Hyundai releases their mid-engined hatch.

      The N has short gearing too. If the price difference doesn't matter, definitely go for the N. The performance is still a lot of fun on the street, it's only 275 hp so you can still drive it hard without going super fast. The sound and customizable N modes also make the N worth the extra money in my opinion. If you're on a tighter budget though, the R-Spec is a ton of fun for the money too, just a little less special.

It has more power while returning equal fuel economy; it has more room front and rear; more cargo volume; more headroom and 4 doors (not including the hatch). That 1 less door on the veloster really compromises its practicality compared to the Civic. I would gladly pay the $7k premium to get the Civic until the i30 N makes its US debut. You’re my gold standard when it comes to backseat space reviews because we’re the same height lol. I personally would love an Elantra N sedan, but i don’t think that’s in the works. Also would love to see the return of the Genesis Coupe. For the VeloN, i wish it would get an AWD treatment.
    You’re right that we don’t give a shit about cheap plastic. I’m also glad they omitted all the electronic nannies (lane keep assist and whatnot). ABS and easily-defeatable TCS are all we need.
    Proud of them for using analog gauges because digital gauges are retarded if we’re honest. Nothing more than a gimmick in a time when tech is all the rage. They are useless in glare, fade over time, look stupid when the car is off, and lack the charm of 3-dimensional gauges. The only reason super cars have digital gauges is because they rev too fast for analog gauges to keep up. In a 4-cylinder ecobox, digital doesn’t make sense at all. Good on Hyundai for not eliminating the volume knobs and handbrakes like Honda. I think it’s a common misconception that new = better. Sometimes, things are clearly moving in the wrong direction, and i like to see cars like the VeloN stand their ground.

If only North American car safety standards would get with the times and match up with LITERALLY THE REST OF THE WORLD, the US and Canada would be able to get a lot of great cars. Wow, that was probably the most concise and clear review of this car I've ever seen. I think Hyundai did a very nice job with their first attempt at a hot hatch. However, The interior is pretty much garbage, the seats are trashy, and the shifter physically is trashy and performance-wise is average, as per the review. I drive the 2018 CTR and I currently have 11,000 mi. I have taken the car on road trips, and daily drive the car in the city every single day. I don't think the CTR should even be compared to this car because frankly, it's just in a different class of handling and performance, not to mention practicality and Honda reliability. Furthermore, the transmission of the CTR is absolutely phenomenal. Between the clutch, shifter, and transmission/engine (K20) that car is such a pleasure to drive every single day. The only edge Hyundai really has on the CTR is the cars ability to adjust almost every single parameter of the suspension and engine options. There are tons of people who complain that the CTR doesn't have a loud exhaust, but the car is already loud in it's appearance, it doesn't need an exhaust to make an entrance or attract attention. Either way, Hyundai did a very nice job with that car and I'm excited to see what they do with their second generation in 2020.

      DJS I know this comment is a year old but I wanted to say that I disagree with some of your points. While I would LOVE to drive a type r, the Veloster N I just purchased is great. Interior is cheaper but its completely livable and easy to navigate. The seats are comfortable and have a nice design to them. The shifter feels nice, though I haven’t driven a type r so I’m not sure how much better the type r’s is. As for the exhaust, I would have to say that I want a nice exhaust, especially if the exterior is menacing like the type R. I can’t see my car when I’m driving it, but I can hear the exhaust so it adds some of the thrill of owning it. Both cars can do better in some things but both are phenomenal! So far, very well (some of this borrowed from a response I previously wrote to someone asking the same question.) I am at about 6k, drive the car like a madman, and occasionally track it. My last UOA was solid. Car is doing quite well. Most people who own them thrash these cars (obviously only after the oil temp gauge shows the oil has reached operating temp), and, thus far, they are holding up very well.
      From the long-term reliability perspective, there are definitely some unknowns. The Theta II variant in the Veloster N has some block similarities to the Evo X's 4B11T IIRC, but many of the internal parts use unique part numbers that have no similarities to the Evo and no similarities to other Theta II variants (i.e., they appear unique to the N, and probably are also shared with the i30N, which so far has a stellar reputation on the other side of the pond.) LSPI does not seem to be a significant issue with this car, likely in part to how most people are spending time well-above the danger zone, and it's slightly lower CR compared to some other TGDIs. Obviously no one can say much about intake valve deposits at this point - certainly Hyundai/Kia have a bad reputation in this department along with many other brands, but it seems like most brands have gotten much better in the past 5 years.
      The only notable thing I can say about this car is that it is extremely hard on engine oil and sump temps exceeding 250F can be seen with prolonged hard usage. I would not be shocked if Hyundai's own owner's manual changed their recommendations as the current ones are kind of loose. IMHO, anyone who owns this car should be sure the dealer does NOT use whatever standard oil Hyundai uses on their other cars, as it's probably not going to stay in-grade throughout the full OCI, and some dealers still lack familiarity with the platform.
      Hyundai as a company tends to be reliable, although, like all brands, Hyundai/Kia have their hits and misses, and their misses are sometimes epic failures. I do suspect the engine in the N will be one of the most reliable in its class. Hyundai has no brand prestige in this game...the only way the N can be successful if they simply outbuild everyone else. If they made a systematic failure, it would cast a shadow over the entire N line...so I am willing to bet they tested this platform and engine to a ridiculous extent. As an added plus, Hyundai does not seem to have any issues whatsoever with us using this car for amateur track use. The platform as a whole seems to hold up well to this, although more time is needed to say for sure. (All that said, I am far from an expert on this car or cars in general.)

    • @clutchthepearls3062
      @clutchthepearls3062 5 років тому +1

      This platform is on its 2nd generation and some form of Hyundai's 2.0 turbo 4 has been around for 10 years, starting in the Genesis Coupe.
