I'm a 56 year-old woman getting out of a 2009 Volvo C30 t5. Like you, not your typical buyer profile for this car. I bought the 2020 Hyundai Veloster Turbo package specifically because it didn't have four doors. Two-door hatchbacks are hard to find. This vehicle is the most fairly priced for what you get and the performance. I love the third door and the value is it prices better on insurance. I do enjoy the sunroof as much as I enjoy punching this little beauty around my city.
That crackle is actually useful! Albert Biermann explained that it keeps some of the fuel in the exhaust to reduce the turbo lag. (Engineering Explained made a video about it)

We ultimately went with the Type R because we got a great deal on the Type R and it was available. I was literally on the phone with the Honda dealer and the Hyundai dealer on the same day. They did not have any Veloster Ns in Performance Blue like in this video and for us that is the only color we wanted for the N. What Hyundai did at this price point is amazing! I love the 3 doors on my Veloster N. They come in handy when you're as tall as I am. Im 6'6" and in most cars I drive I have to have the seat all the way back. and in a 4 door car that usually puts me behind the B pillar a bit makes a weird blind spot and makes it weird to get in and out of the car. But in 2 door cars I can have my seat all the way back and still be in front of the B Pillas, makes it way easier to get in and out of the car. But that's just me. I know not everyone is as tall as me.
I just got the Turbo for my wife yesterday and I have to admit, I'll probably be driving it more than my modded Ram 1500. It's just so much fun to corner, it's like a go-kart, and that turbo kicking in feels amazing already. Big smile on face all the time :) It's brand new so I won't be reving it up too much yet for at least 500 miles lol. It's probably one of the best handling and performing cars for the price. Might get one for myself to mod and play with as a secondary fun car :D
I love this video! What an amazing car! And, yes-damn right I bought one! I heard the crackles and pops are functional. Apparently, it creates back pressure to keep the turbo going between shifts. I also got the vibe that anti-lag systems have a tough time passing emissions, so this is a total win!

Well done as always. Thanks for the video review. My son just picked up the N with the performance package a few weeks ago. Same color. He's still breaking it in at this point. Notthing to do but drive this one other than get a second set of wheels for the winter...
I'm very curious about the next gen of this car. Am aware that the DCT is coming and a 2.5 engine is in the works, with variable timing that is superior to VTEC. Sounds like a future type N may be well into the 300hp range. But I bought the current 2020 model, with PP.... picking it up today !!!!
@@esantiago8989 base sti is 6k (36k) more. Fully loaded sti is 10k (40k) more. Although, the veloster n is in the same ballpark as the wrx. Base is 28k and goes up to like 32k for the premium or limited.
I really like this car but having watched your previous Veloster turbo review I have some concerns. One, the blind spot from the back c-pillar. The N doesn't have safety options available like the Veloster turbo. You also mentioned how small of a car the Veloster turbo is. If I'm not mistaken aren't all the Veloster's the same dimensions? I will need test drive it to see if I will like it. I'm 5'10 so not tall like you.
I've test driven several of them and am 5'9. I have PLENTY of space in the front and I can easily sit in the back. I probably wouldn't recommend the back seats to anyone over 6 feet tho. As for the blindspots, they weren't bad bit not great. Good news is the driver side mirror comes pre-built with a blindspots mirror. I'd definitely put an aftermarket blindspot mirror for the passenger side tho
It's definitely worth taking for a test drive. It's a very specialized car built specifically for a very specific audience, so it is most likely going to either be a great match for you or not a good match in the least. It's worth pointing out that the car is extremely basic in regard to amenities...it trades many of these amenities for performance features that most cars anywhere near this price range lack. So one question you might want to keep in mind is if the N's amenities are sufficient for you. For me they were more than sufficient as I didn't prioritize them nearly as high as I did other attributes, like driving engagement.
The previous generation models were known for poor visibility and bad blind spots out the rear... I own a 2013 Veloster and honestly at first I thought the visibility and blind spots were terrible, but after a few months of driving I got use to it, and now currently in 2020 I can’t comprehend how I thought it was so bad now that I’m use to it. It’s 0% of an issue.
I want to buy this car so bad. I couldn't buy because I never bought a car before so this would cost wayyyyyy to much for a first car but after I pay off my first car I'll buy this car. ITS MY DREAM CAR!!!
I think that the 4 doors version makes sense when picking up somebody off the street or road because of the hassle of folding seats up in when you have to pick someone up when in a hurry is something i hate the most in 3 door cars and is annoying. I actually think that's a good approach to solve that issue.
2020 Type R is out (and much improved tech/suspension) and 2021 announced already. I made an offer on a 2019 Type R and lowest they would go was $38k!!!! On a $34,700 msrp.... snobs. I got a 2020 Veloster N WITH Performance Pack for $27k instead. Couldn't be happier. I like the looks and how it drives better too, and more power is easy since it's only 15psi stock (Type R is 23psi stock)
It’s cool that Hyundai makes the best car for this market segment. However for every 20 wrxs or GTIs I see I might see 1 veloster. I still have yet to see an N in the wild. Maybe too expensive or too wild looking for the wrx and gti buyers? Do they just step up to an sti or r at that price?
Hey what's happening I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips it's loud enough for me and it sets off cars alarm lol with all the pops gurgling and burbling especially in cold start and I've changed out the spoiler it's a Nso thanks for sharing your videos with me 👋👍🙂🚘♥️
Imo this is the closest to the Civic Type R which is still the FWD king at the moment but to get something with this performance for the price is insane. Only thing I would change would be the wheels and remove those red accents and we are golden
That is true in North America, at least for now. In Europe tho, they have Megane RS Trophy and Trophy R (Fastest around the ring), and they have/ will have faster FWD hatches from VW Group. And there's i30N too. Veloster N is actually priced higher in the market compared to i30N, so better value there. Although it' def costs more since cars are more expansive in europe lol
Hyndai does not use brembos on their n models its their brake brand. Brembo does not supply them at all. Its mentioned several times in other car reviews.
im excited for the DCT version!!! its been shown on a teaser trailer today!!! and wow it makes me want it more now! :P or should I wait for the KONA N :P

I don't understand why someone would want a computer shifted manual when doing it yourself is way more entertaining and probably more reliable in the long term.
Does the car stay locked into sport or sport plus mode when you shut it off and go to turn it back on? Or do you have to adjust that every time you drive it
I'm in the same boat, WRX Sti, Type R, or Veloster N PP, Honestly the Veloster N with PP is my choice for value but damn whatever choice is made it has to be daily driver and with winters AWD in soo preferable. I might have to move:D
No. Slightly different pricing class, the Si offers quite a few amenities/driver assistance features the N doesn't have, and the N is far more performance-oriented. From a performance perspective, the N could be thought of as being somewhere between the Si and Type R, slightly skewed in the direction of the Type R.
The weird doors made this a no for me. I would have liked an i30N. I couldnt find an Elantra GT N Line so I bought a 2018 GTI SE with plaid seats. I like the 18" wheels over 19s for ride quality and cost. Wish I opted for adjustable dampening but not a big deal. I enjoy the sunroof. My last 2 Mustangs didnt have one but I enjoy the light it lets in. Makes the car feel bigger. As a new dad Mustang had to go. Needed something fun with stick shift and a usable back seat. Veloster N not practical enough. Also requires 91 octane.
Definitely this. I love Honda and we own 6 Honda’s at home. And I own an accord 2.0t and I reviewed and drive the type r but I’d chose this one over. It’s just so fun to drive. We understand Honda has nice style and cool red bucket seats the sound of the type r is trash.
Believe it or not launch control is not the best part of the shifting of this car.. the best part is that it WILL flat shift!! if you actually had a pair you would have tried it first thing.. my fiesta ST would not.. as soon as clutch was depressed fuel cut off and it took about 2 seconds to recover.. lost time.. not so with this car just hold the throttle down and shift dont let off girly man!! But you must be quick so for you I would say you need ALOT of practice..but once mastered the reward will be quicker 0-60 times than advertised..
I just don't get why Hyundai had to make it 3-door... Make up your mind, either make it 2-door or 4-door! Can't wait to see the next version of this hatchback though, hopefully Hyundai improves the interior quality. Everything else in the Veloster N looks and sounds great.
Whole point for me is you don't have to worry about voiding the warranty with the factory performance package. And quite frankly I don't want a used anything after this guy has been driving it for a year or two. Might buy a t-shirt to help him pay the speeding tickets though. 😆

Only a minute in. Doesn’t hit 60 at the stop of 2nd, if you use a device to measure the speed. You must shift a second time. And this vehicle does not have Brembos. *face.palm*
I think Hyundai made an error when they made a techno rich N car. The real challenge is getting the same kind of handling and efficiency with out all trickery. I'm not a fan of the trick suspension when some quality progressive spring is enough. My old 1998 Civic had Pro-kit springs and huge dampening range that was super quick. With the front double-wishbone suspension and upgraded shocks, I could hop onto a curb at extreme speed with no drama. If the Veloster attempted the same maneuver, it'd destroy its wheel and front suspension. Also, if it's your daily ride, u want it to be predictable. In an emergency situation, you want the car to react like one of your own body parts, just like your legs would react if a piano was about to drop on your head. Having all these layers and layers of electronic and adjustability is going to put you in a situation where you're not in-tune with your ride. I feel at home in a more simplistic setup, when done properly like those old-school car from the 90s. My tuned 98 Civic had it and I feel like we're now playing catch-up to something that was already done.
How would you know if this VN would destroy its' front suspension and wheels? Have you driven this car yet? Sounds like you're just judging this car based on the Hyundai badge. I don't think you know what you're talking about. Judging by you praising your own riced-out 98 civic for all its' glory, would you say the same thing if you compared it to the new Type R?
@@stevenlee9819 With my old 98 civic's front double-wishbone setup on progressive pro-kit springs and Tokico shocks, super stiff Toyo Proxes sidewall (195/50/15) on Konig rims, I have not encountered anything remotely as capable in the extreme. Perhaps N or R can handle that kind of abuse but I wouldn't bank on it. I put over 250,000km on said setup and handling was still above 95 percent with same components and no accidents. I haven't driven an R, but I'm very impressed with my current daily, 2017 2.0na 6MT civic (this car drives better with traction control off, but not completely for those oh-shit moment). Anyways, doubt the R could turn-in as fast as my old tuned 98 Civic.
@Chuck Towers You're right for a controlled race track, for the rest of us who have to daily our car on the streets, I disagree. Still, my old setup with front & rear double wishbone could not get upset even though it's not dropped. Honda probably knows, since they created the Type-R, but if you needed a test mule to come-up with ultimate front drive, it's a tuned 90s Civic. btw, I got my drivers licences in 1986, but would steal my dad's Dela 88 Brougham well before that.
I'd get a Mustang Eco Boost 6 speed. Don't need all the performance crap. Nice car though. Also no one notices a Hyundai Veloster by comparison. I have a 2018 Honda Civic Turbo with just over 11,000k miles on it, no one cares, but I like it. ;-)

I own a 2013 Veloster and honestly at first I thought the visibility and blind spots were terrible, but after a few months of driving I got use to it, and now currently in 2020 I can’t comprehend how I thought it was so bad now that I’m use to it. It’s 0% of an issue.
Blind spots are not an issue if you properly set up your mirrors.
7:42 i might be crazy but this looks like 124th in Redmond, WA.
Ding!
I'd get the type r only because it's more practical, but this thing has it beat in looks.
I think with the newly-announced dual-clutch transmission we’ll start to see more of them on the street.
Most dealerships don't have them in stock to sell in my area.... NW GA
@@tmorris413 Same area, I've already seen one or two of them rolling around.
Might even be getting closer. A mule was spotted with a bigger 2.5L Turbo 4 banger putting out 300HP and 311 TQ.
Necrotic Reaper yup and comes with a DCT
Do you hit the rev- limiter in 2nd gear at 60 mph?
Yup. Ran into it on the launch in the video.
If the Kona N comes in AWD then hands down the Kona .....AWD in the corners is heaven. www.hyundaikonaforum.com/cdn-cgi/image/format=auto,onerror=redirect,width=1920,height=1920,fit=scale-down//showcase/2018-kona-awd-1-6t-lowered.1162/cover-image?d=1578161000
I don't understand why someone would want a computer shifted manual when doing it yourself is way more entertaining and probably more reliable in the long term.
Leith Morrison: because when you commute, there’s a thing called traffic.
@@reddelta Yea, try going to concert in 9 lane city traffic with a manual. Not fun at all.
Wish it was all wheel drive.
very nice review!
No available in the uk for some reason , think it’s because it’s a 3door. Prefer the i30N styling tbh.
Are Hyundai still releasing the Tucson N?
yes, they are
Hyundai Veloster N all the way!
1:28 no Brembos or Recaro seats to keep the price low.
How you hit the cones?
Amazing Video .
Thanks for the ❤
Does the car stay locked into sport or sport plus mode when you shut it off and go to turn it back on? Or do you have to adjust that every time you drive it
Current owner here, it starts in normal and you have to switch to Sport mode/eco/n mode after its on
I've been trying to decide this or a wrx 😪
I think this is a better deal especially if you are ever gonna drive it on a track, but the wrx is a classic and also is a blast.
I'm in the same boat, WRX Sti, Type R, or Veloster N PP, Honestly the Veloster N with PP is my choice for value but damn whatever choice is made it has to be daily driver and with winters AWD in soo preferable. I might have to move:D
This or a GTI?
Wait their coming out more options and a DCT.
Don't hate on me since I don't have a lot of experience in driving manual but is there an automatic version?
Yes, they just announced a dual clutch. Should be out soon. (That’s a type of automatic.)
@@drivingsports nice for sure ill see if I can go for it. I want my first car to be this n 😩
Is it comparable to Civic Si?
I’d take the Hyundai over the Si.
Veloster better
No. Slightly different pricing class, the Si offers quite a few amenities/driver assistance features the N doesn't have, and the N is far more performance-oriented. From a performance perspective, the N could be thought of as being somewhere between the Si and Type R, slightly skewed in the direction of the Type R.
@@npaul4171
Pricing class? They cost almost the same. A turbo ultimate is more comparable in terms of features AND price.
The Civic Si is more comparable to the Veloster Turbo/Turbo R-Spec
I Love Hyundai N!
A proper dad would've bought a Type R.
I thought the GTI required premium grade gas?
Pretty sure all turbo high performance engines are suppose to be used with 91.
@@DragonKnightX12 If that was true then turbo diesel and e85 conversion wouldn't exist.
@@tmorris413 It does not, but you lose performance going with 87.
Great review! I had the pleasure of reviewing the veloster n aswell and to this day i still have dreams about it!👍🏼
Definitely this. I love Honda and we own 6 Honda’s at home. And I own an accord 2.0t and I reviewed and drive the type r but I’d chose this one over. It’s just so fun to drive. We understand Honda has nice style and cool red bucket seats the sound of the type r is trash.
This crap doesn’t come near the Type R.
I want one. Hard to find..
Considering trading my forte in for a veloster n
I wouldn’t use launch control. It cuts too much power. Forums say that launching the car with your feet is faster
I just don't get why Hyundai had to make it 3-door... Make up your mind, either make it 2-door or 4-door! Can't wait to see the next version of this hatchback though, hopefully Hyundai improves the interior quality. Everything else in the Veloster N looks and sounds great.
The 3 door is market dependent. If you want a 4 door hatch, get the i30.
One man in Korea Beat the 2015 A45 AMG with brand new Veloster N dct.
They differ by more than 100 horsepower
Hey guys are these reliable?
This car is so wicked!
sound good
His voice sounds like a news reporter.
Im in for the N, no question
Maybe I'll wait a few years to buy this used.
I think I'd get a used focus rs. This car it's seemingly perfect from the factory and mods will just mess up the balance. Maybe a dsc controller.
Whole point for me is you don't have to worry about voiding the warranty with the factory performance package. And quite frankly I don't want a used anything after this guy has been driving it for a year or two. Might buy a t-shirt to help him pay the speeding tickets though. 😆
@@godblesshamas Absolutely, for those who need and value warranties this is a great choice. I take consideration into what I do with cars, which has always been to modify them.
I've been waiting for an automatic for so long, now I just need to save up!!!
........what
If you buy this car with an auto instead of manual, I know for a fact you sit when you pee because it's "easier"

1:28 "Oversized (non existing) Brembos" lol
People need to stop calling every red caliber Brembo and every race inspired seats Recaro.
Yeah, that was an error. Pinned an earlier comment pointing it out.
Very nice car.. but the true king oh Hatches in the CTR
I dont even think the ctr is even a hatch
Tony Chau Of course it is.. CTR It’s a regular Civic Hatchback with a lot of extra mods including a 300hp engine
Isn't the Golf R faster?
The 2021 has a DCT, it will be has quick as the type R.
I love mine. So dan fun!!!!!!
I want one!!!
Hot hatch fun!
Hey look it's the Vivace from BeamNG!
Put a AWD in it for USA and you have a winner!!! Until then it’s a 7!
God damn this car is cool
unfortunately the brakes are not Brembos.
Not the King. More like the prince who was destined for greatness and trained with a private master only to fall on the battlefield to a 1v1 against a CTR
Man, I just can't get past the look of the car. It's just like a lady, if she doesn't have a pretty face and nice body probably not even tempted to go out even though she maybe the sweetest person ever.
How dare you admit that looks matter with women and even WORSE, A Sports Car!. Prepare for all social media to ban you for having an organic honest opinion.
Those aren’t Brembo brakes
GR SPORT CAP DRIVING A HYUNDAI😂😂😂😂😂😂

Only a minute in. Doesn’t hit 60 at the stop of 2nd, if you use a device to measure the speed. You must shift a second time. And this vehicle does not have Brembos. *face.palm*
King of the hot hatches... 😂🤣😂
@Chuck Towers I wasn't replying to you lol...it was meant towards Pars S
@@stevenlee9819 Riced out Civic... Ignorance like yours is why Honda took so long to find it's lost mojo.
In my opinion, this car was a mistake. They should have given us the Elantra in N trim like they do in Europe. Not this odd car with 3 doors.
You can go buy the Kona N in a few months and leave us first adaptors with our weird doors alone as we pass you.
I'd get a Mustang Eco Boost 6 speed. Don't need all the performance crap. Nice car though. Also no one notices a Hyundai Veloster by comparison. I have a 2018 Honda Civic Turbo with just over 11,000k miles on it, no one cares, but I like it. ;-)
