Andrew S yes, fake... not naturally occurring. Having said that, it’s not that it’s fake That bothers me... it would just get old I think. Hahaha! Younglings! I'm 52 and I have been tearing up the back roads in middle Georgia since April in mine. Getting close to 10k Miles and this little bastard has taken it like a champ. Even commuting to work down the 65mph posted highway is a challenge to keep a lid on it, and I rarely do. I'm like a jet fighter pilot pulling up around crop dusters. Now that being said... I understand that this is not truly a FAST car, it's the handling I love. This car feels like it is an extension of my body and when I think something... It does it. Rapidly
@@imtheonehero9305 I think the type r does the whole daily driver/track beast the best, but I’d definitely take this sub 30k. Optional dct as well for under 35. I already have my Z for my manual enjoyment, but this would be great to just hoon without worrying about a new 3rd pedal.
@@imtheonehero9305 Yeah, you are right; the type-R is pretty ugly and has far less personality but the specs on it are great. The thing is though, Honda has been producing that for quite some time and this is Hyundai's first real attempt at a proper hot-hatch. The VN w/PP is without a doubt the best bang for overall buck for the segment, 10 year warranty, 5 year track warranty, 28k for the stick and 32-35k for the DCT. It's also a great beginner's car for anyone picking up stick, the rev-matching is incredibly good and the assistive start is always a welcoming reminder. Only real complaints is that the gearbox is kinda underwhelming for the manual, the Focus RS I learned on felt a fair bit better and my friends Type R doesn't feel like things are super loose; all things that can be improved on though and after a new rear motor mount it helped to stiffen things up. 5k+ miles in, a few issues with it but overall I still love my VN; hoping that one day they'll make an AWD variant to swap over too.
Picking mine up tomorrow! Got it WITH Performance Package for $27,500!!! Cheapest Civic Type R near me was $38,000 that's $10k difference. For $2k I can do intercooler, intake, downpipe (all self installed) and a tune and be close to 400BHP/320whp and 400wtq and still be $8k cheaper than a civic
Intake, Downpipe and tune (I.C doesn't increase power) will not get you anywhere near 400BHP in a VN (400TQ... maybe). Not all cars can make 400 HP with a simple DP and stg2 tune like the MQB GTI/Golf R/S3.
Well done! My wife and I LOVE this car. This will be our next car. After driving a manual for most of my life, I really do miss it after buying an automatic. This Veloster N just looks like a fun car. Back in high school I had a Honda CRX. It was a sad day when I had to let that go. After the second engine swap, it did not make sense to keep it after it broke down again. In my opinion, this Veloster N is the spiritual successor to the Honda CRX AND is has a back seat AND that Hyundai 10 year/100,000 mile warranty! A 10 year warranty in a hot hatch. WOW. I am working right now to try to find a way to make this our second car. Again, thanks for the video and I will have to drive that road. when I get it. It is simply epic! BTW, Racing Blue is the color to get for this Veloster N.
I was just thinking the same thing the other day as i owned a crx si back in high school. I still have dreams about that car too. I was thinking wrx next, but i wanna drive a veloster n soon to see how fun it really is.
Love the out takes at the end!!! I’m gonna get on of these in a year or so. Sold Hyundai’s for 5 years. I was with them when they launched the Veloster. Was really excited about the car, then it tanked in sales!!! Now they took it off the Accent platform and put it on the Elantra Sport platform. Adding the Albert Bierman factor made all the difference. Before I sold Hyundai’s I sold In the Luxury market for 15 years. Loved them, but in 2010 Luxury sales slowed down to a crawl. Then I saw the 2010 Sonata’s everywhere!! They were sexy looking and a fraction of the price of the Luxury brands! Made the move and never regretted it. I’m retired from car sales now but still miss it. Still visit my old dealer for service and on going friendship. I bought my wife an Elantra Limited before I retired. It has been an amazing car. In the last 50K Miles it has only needed tires, battery, front breaks, and regular oil changes. Very happy with my purchase. Subbing.
Ian Mcculloch I have a 2018 Golf 1.8T manual, fun to drive concerned about reliability. If the Veloster N was available when I bought the Golf, I may have settled for the N. I am more confident in Hyundai reliablity vs german cars - though I own a golf and is financed.
Overall nice video, but you made a huge deal of being a Volkswagenist in the introduction, then barely drew any comparisons to the Golfs at all - I was waiting the whole 16:09 : )
Good to see you back in CA driving on one of the few good roads we have and yes, for an adult the Civic Type R is too much........what was Honda thinking ? . Good review of what is becoming a super small market segment but one that a few car guys can still get excited about.
I wish I could be out there more! Thanks for the kind words. As you mentioned, it's a small market but important, hopefully people keep buying them so manufactures keep with producing these great cars.
@@EatSleepDrive agree I'm a Honda guy owned 100+ still no way I'm paying that. If the more base model comes out and it actually sells for $30k I'll bite
@@EatSleepDrive 45k is like 6 to 7 mark up... I paid a 2g mark up for my fk8, when I looked at the Veloster N it was a 7k mark up... if you don't like the way a type r looks you probably shouldn't be bragging on a car with a nonsymmetrical three doors...
I agree with basically everything you had to say. You know your stuff, and you perfectly captured the spirit and the philosophy of the car. I bought mine a month and a half ago. This amazing car is making me want to own more fun cars, but the reality is that we will all have trouble in finding something more fun than this at such an obtainable price. For me, the Veloster N beats the GTI and WRX at that $30K price point in performance value and fun factor all day long, which is what I want in a car. Thank you for posting this awesome video!
Exactly, not just copy everyone else aka *Red* . It's called performance blue, the launch color of all N vehicles. Hyundai does not use performance blue for the buttons in the I30N fastback though. Gosh that's a beautiful looking vehicle IMO.
The reason I GOT the 2012 Veloster is that I saw the new VW Scirocco in Europe, a VW exec told me they would never sell in the USA, because "America gets the crap VWs". The VELOSTER was a mix of the NEW Scirocco, VW Corrodo, 1988 Porch 944, all mixed in to one car.
@@slackerman9758 The German rep at the NYC auto show said they would not be able to sell anything else in the states if the Scirocco was here. If you get to drive in Europe you will see that our SPORT cars are regular cars in Europe and they are all Diesel - I asked why, they said because it is cheaper. The BMW M5 I was in was getting 55 miles per gallon.
@@LuckyDogProductions Thanks for the extra info. I drove a diesel GTI (GTD, I think) in Northern Italy and it was a blast! Pound-feet for miles (Newton meters for kilometers for you Francophiles). Great in the higher altitudes as well. Diesel per 100km, in Italy anyways, was quite a bit cheaper.
Having driven both the diff on the GTI feels more natural. However one isn’t better than the other. For me I wanted an everyday car with 4 doors and I paid less for a new GTI Rabbit. Hyundai doesn’t seem to know how to market the N brand in the states. I’d definitely consider one after few years. When it comes to the ST my father owns one and it’s a car I just don’t like. It’s too nervous on the highway and the interior is poorly made for 26,000 car. But after 42,000 miles on the ford no major issues at all.
I like the extra space and the interior styling better on the VW, but the veloster is a blast to drive. The veloster gives up so much space that I would be left wondering why not get a mustang -- if you want performance, lousy rear seats and minimal rear storage...
Great review. One thing to note is that Hyundai warranty and quality are huge differentiators. I don't trust VW quality. I've owned later model Hyundais and they are bulletproof.
Bulletproof my ass. I've seen recent models spontaneously catch in fire. Korean engineering is not bulletproof. Just look at other Korean products like Samsung. Their phones blowup. I only trust Japanese engineering for reliability.
@@SGTOldSchool96 Yeah I saw that later when looking it up to double check. I often get this confused because used to be a joint venture between Sony and Samsung same Co-owned if I'm not mistaken by Japan and Korea. With Japan having more to do with it's development than korea had at the time. Seems it's branched itself away from Japan since then and become just Samsung and korean owned majorly.
How is the clutch feel. Is it abrupt or gradual when releasing and where is thr engaging point. Can you please mention the same for all manual cars you test drive.
Clutch weight is medium, gradual release. The engagement point is fairly close to the floor, in fact I almost stalled it the first time I hopped in the car, wasn't expecting the release to be so low. It's totally fine once you're used to it.
If you aren’t careful you will stall but you can definitely feel it engage which i like a lot. Compared to the ctr I can’t even feel anything and it feels like just pressing a button to clutch
@@EatSleepDrive I'm a mustang guy and am used to the pedal release at the bottom, so that's good to know. I'm thinking about getting one of these in white as my next daily.
I LOVE this car. I'm old, been driving manuals all my life.....and if I had the money I would buy one of these tomorrow! Meanwhile I'll keep on driving my 2002 Honda Civic SI.
I'd like to, but for two grand it seems like a no brainier to spring for the performance pack model. In the grand scheme of 30k it's trivial and the LSD alone is worth the cost of entry.
I look at this car as a more refined and higher quality Focus ST. You are paying for the suspension/chassis/tuning, brakes, engine. Not fancy (useless dash iPad) tech and interior materials. I've had three generations of GTI's and they were great cars but slightly sterile, I've had a Focus and Fiesta ST that were great to drive but the paint started to fall off after 2 years. If I were in the market for a car right now I'd be looking at one of these.
@@isabelle.c011 Looks can be deceiving. Give it a year, the paint will be bubbling off the Ford products. I had a 13 Focust ST and a 16 Fiesta ST. While I loved them because of the driving experience they both developed rust on the door/hatch/hood seams after less than two years. Something my 20 year old Honda does not exhibit. Totally unacceptable on a near 30k dollar car (Focus with leather recaro seats) I'll never buy another Ford product.
tomtom255 i have a 16 st admittedly the paint is an issue but ive fixed it myself here and there over the years with single stage paint match spray paint and good detailing techniques and i am foST fan boy and you can fit 3 in the rear vs the n the FoST is not dead Yet lol
@@isabelle.c011 Yeah like I said I loved both of the cars and I never had a single mechanical issue. It's really disappointing because other than the corrosion issue they are great little cars. I wonder if the RS has similar issues because those are built in Germany instead of USA(Focus) or Mexico(Fiesta)
No one ever compares it directly to the Focus ST, which is the closest other thing to it, in my opinion. Yes, the Focus ST isn't coming to the States anymore, but this car would be the natural replacement for one. You get car that's 100% usable day-to-day, but that sacrifices some comfort, interior quality, and practicality to be a VERY capable performer. It's like a slightly less compromising GTI, which is exactly what the Focus ST was.
Yes Focus ST and it seems this one both target and nailed great sound and since audio doesn't get any love by the manufacturers now, drivers are left with just the engine to listen to now. Make it sing!
The GTI has an optional PP too, with a similar diff. Then there is the Leon Cupra, coming standard with it (not in the US though). I own a Cupra, it feels awesome, but scary at times too, it does pull the wheel at certain situations.
Hey what's happening I've purchase a 2020 Hyundai veloster turbo r spec I've changed out the Mufflers and exhaust tips it's loud enough for me and it sets off cars alarm lol but with this pandemic happened it's going be difficult for me to find a veloster N 👋👍🙂🚘🤣😅
I've never driven a Focus RS, but I've ridden in one. And the only thing I can say for sure is the suspension of the RS is ridiculously firm, firmer than the N. And in my opinion not in a good way, it's far too harsh for the street for my liking at least.
I was digging the hype for this car until I drove a veloster R. The interior was meh and for a big dude like me the tip of my foot kept hitting some wire harness below the dash (size 14 shoe). Never had that in any car before. Still excited to see people driving these. Only seen one on the road. It's a cool exclusive hot hatch
I only wear size 12, but was still having that issue with my foot hitting the stuff under the lower dash when I first got my N. It took about a week to dial in the perfect seating position, but I haven't had a problem with kicking those wires in 4 months, including plenty of high intensity driving, track days and AutoX.
You can't compare the Veloster N to a Veloster R two complete different beasts. The Velo N has a bit larger and better interior than the R. And is MUCH faster. Better handling. The front seats of the N can fit a 6' person. The back cannot.
I’m a VW fanboy and currently have a Mk6 gti which I love but man I really like what Hyundai/Kia is doing right now. I would definitely look very hard at one of these if I was in the market for a car right now even though it would pain me to leave the VW community. Brands need to look at what they’re doing and start doing exciting stuff again. I hope people start getting over the stigma of buying a Hyundai because clearly they are making huge leaps. What I would love to see if Mazda put a turbo and IRS in the new Mazda 3 because that thing looks sexy.
As a current MK7 GTI owner, I wouldn’t trade my GTI for a Veloster N. Fun it may be, but that’s not the only reason why someone buys a hot hatch. The GTI is a much better and more usable daily driver. Personally, I am not a fan of the Veloster’s styling and 3-door design. It is also less refined and has a cheap interior. I’m still glad the Veloster N exists though.
pops and bangs I don't get you. Cars today are totally moving in the direction of increased practicality while pursuing greater agility. There were special sedans and wagons going way back and I had three wagons in a row, now in a hatch....but I get it that each person has to draw the line somewhere and I totally get the line being Yes to 4-door and No to 3-door. Its all subjective and what point is to to hear someone's opinion without reading the justification? This isn't voting.
The interior has the same styling as a GTI honestly I've test driven a GTI and it's just super boring and tame. As far as comfort via handling for daily use I'm sorry to tell you but the GTI is not superior. They're both honestly highly comparable the veloster N can be tuned via the LCD screen in the car to adjust it's springs to comfort electronically. Veloster N has faster than the GTI ESPECIALLY in the Corners though only if you've got the performance pack in it. And considering that all future velosters will come standard with it instead of it being optional. And future ones are getting a wet dual clutch 8 speed DCT... look out GTI. People need to wake up and stop hating just cause they see "Hyundai" the only real way to know about a car... is to go see it in person. Test drive it. You don't know anything until you test drive. Period. End of story. Now if you're talking spaciousness. The GTI wins for back seat room and trunk space. I COMPLETELY understand that. If you don't care about that and want performance for your dollar. Veloster N all day. A tune seriously wakes it up drastically. Kind of like what VW owners say about the GTI and Gold R...........
Thank you for saying the Type-R styling is ridiculous. I'm 6 years older than you, and the styling of the Civic is a complete adolescent deal breaker. It's just flat out STUPID. The history of the Type-R hatchbacks contains styling that has been far better than the latest.
Lifted_Above I love the styling because it's not half-assed. It's ALMOST all the way but for most it is enough. The Type R would be perfect if it didn't have the fake rear diffuser exits but at the 35k original price point it is forgiven. But, I will say that I am not trying to impress others. I appreciate art for myself. Cars like the R are art.
@@jamesmedina2062 Everyone sees something different. Yet, the front and rear fascias are just lines for the sake of lines. They serve no aero purpose, no weight purpose, no finish quality purpose, no cleaning and waxing purpose.
to anyone who owns the car with the performance package. how is the FWD? how does it handle on tight mountain roads (or track) the only turnoff for me is the fact that its front wheel drive.
It handles about as well as a civic type r, apparently. And you should know how good the the type r is. A little more nose heavy than the type r though, so hard braking is somewhat iffy.
I doubt the the older generation would be any better? Younger people tend to be into cars (I believe), so it would sense for them to learn or want to learn how to drive a manual.
@@2010ngojo That statement makes no sense to me. Because we ALL used to be young once. So at one point we were all into cars. Some of us into newer cars and some into the older gen cars. Even though we have grown older some of us don't grow out of liking cars.
LAG?? STI has lag this has no lag at all.. and for the pops you know the car has a valve right?? it doesnt pop if you have it on normal mode it only pops if you have the valve turn on in your N custome or if you have the driving in N mode then it turns on the valve.. bruuuuh and the reason why its blue because the color represent the N division for hyundai
FlowRealSmooth from what I’ve seen STi owners crap on other cars for turbo lag, yet there cars have literally no power til 4000 and up rpm lol. STi is the ultimate ricer 4 banger “hot hatch.” It took Subaru til 2015 to be able to beat a 2009 Cobalt SS turbo around VIR lol, that’s just sad. The STi needs a MAJOR powertrain upgrade... still has cooling issues, still has performance robbing UEL’s, still cracks piston rings...
I totally agree with Hyundai's choice not to care too much about Nordschleife times and prioritizing the driving experience. I actually noticed there was no record of them testing the Veloster N there recently and thought it was strange, but now I know lol. That said, I've messed with a really high quality mod of the 2019 VN on Assetto Corsa's laser scanned Ring (real hp, weight numbers etc.) and I can tell you it is a sub 8:00 or even 7:50 car with a professional driver with racing tires (I've only managed to get 8:23). I'm sure the mod/sim doesn't replicate the real life suspension geometry perfectly, but I found the cornering speed and ease of getting close to the limit the best part of the car (like the type R). I'm sure in real life it's even better, because I've heard nothing but good things about the handling. Also does really well top speed wise and doesn't bog down like a Miata on the 3 uber long straights. But yeah, I have no doubt people are running sub 8 minutes.
Its an Ncredible car. Ive had mine for 3k miles and I love it. It handles superbly. It is not the most comfortable car but it is easily one of the most fun.
You mention driving it in Normal and N but do not mention custom. Did you know you can customize N mode to reduce the chassis stiffness but maintain the throttle response, improved e-LSD performance, etc? Almost every N owner drives 99% of the time in such N custom with the above settings.
The practical answer. 90% of the time I just drive by myself or one other passenger. The driver door is much bigger because it's only one door on that side. It makes it easier to get in and out. But yes, quirks
I mean performance wise this car DOES compete with the GTI quite easily. Just not for the practicality everyone demands. But then most people aren't buying this for a daily family car with a splash of fun.
Shh. It doesn't actually have any more hp. There's been tons of dyno testing done at this point, and they all show the same graph regardless of performance package. Hyundai just underrated the non-PP the same way AMC and other manufacturers used to do back in the day.
@@WeShallBeFreeAtLast I mean the electronic slip diff is definitely worth it anyway for the pp but yeah I just dont see how they could increase the hp unless they just gave it a different map for the engine but damn I wish I had that extra hp or is all veloster n 275hp
@@lj555551 It actually does increase the hp not because of what they add to it. I talked with a few people at hyundai about it. The increase is due to re calibration of the engine. But none of this matters as ALL future veloster N will be standard with this from factory. Only the 2019 and 2020 models seemed to have been optional about it.
@@jeremyhenry3126 thank wish they would have made that clear so we wouldn't be thinking it was bs ....i figured it was re mapping the engine or a lie ether way still love my n but thx now I no i will spread the word thats how they got more hp

So anyone who is non Performance pack need not worry you can get it put in. And that came from Hyundai corporate. I called them to ask.
That's pretty much the best spec, except for the steering. Sport+ steering just makes the wheel ridiculously heavy, you don't get anymore feedback. I prefer the steering in a lesser setting.
I know this video is for the N Series but I just wanted to say that I own the 2019 R-Spec and I absolutely LOVE this vehicle and I don't regret buying it. It also seems to be quite eye-catching to the female persuasion. lol
Got the car without perf package solely because I didn't want bigger brakes. Wish the diff was offered separate. Even still, the car as is is fantastic.
Civic Type R is $7k more for a reason......seam welded unibody, better quality interior, better seats, more power, overall larger car to name a few things.
Interior is better. It is faster in a straight. The seats aren't much better. Veloster N has bucket seats. Veloster N's handling is really good. The CTR doesn't handle much better than the Veloster N. If you're looking for performance you can afford and not having to pay 40,000$+ for it. Then Veloster N. But if you've got the money then sure CTR is a great choice. I just can't stand the fake diffusers. OVERLY giant wing. And 3 outlet exhaust that makes no sound. It has such an aggressive look. Sounds so tame. And costs SO much. Given that if you just go back to old school Type R's you can make insane power and just upgrade the hell out of them for more power and better handling. And still not cost what that CTR costs.
@@buildmorefarms1007 you have something rare that's going extinct. Hold on to it. A tune, LSD and upgraded brakes will make your ST exceed a veloster n in performance. Exhaust and intercooler upgrade are other considerations for improvement. Can get it all for less than 4k after labor. Even cheaper if you can diy. Fwiw the ST3 interior looks sharp

James Gatz the thing is. Most people who buy these performance hatches know what it is. Hatchbacks aren’t exactly the prettiest in casual people’s eyes.
@Sloonz Lel quit bashing. The more people that can buy the car with whatever trans they want, means this will stay around longer and give us more versions of the N. Personally this car with a dct would be better for straight line performance and I totally see why people would want it.
@Sloonz Lel yeah but more options in a more fun car that isn't sterile like the vws. I drove an s3 and was disappointed (golf r as I assume you know) went with a Kia stinger gt instead and am very happy with my choice. If there was a 275 hp 7speed dct veloster N I'd take it over a dsg gti pp and prob a golf r. As it sits I'd take the veloster N over both due to personality and fun to drive ability alone
Yeah seriously you don't really notice the 3rd door. It's kind of silly to dismiss it just cause it has 3 doors. I can understand wanting 4 doors if you planned to have roadtrips and take people and need the space. But if you're just looking for sporty and compact then it literally makes no difference that it has a 3rd door.
Yeah in the normal mode, it sounds very much like a normal commuter car. Maybe a bit gruntier, but the crackles and pops aren't there. On the highway, I very rarely don't drive in normal mode as the exhaust does wear on you at 110 KM/h
If Toyota will release a GRMN Version of the the Corolla Hathcback in the states (since they didn't give us the GRMN Yaris) I think they could really get this market stirred up. A supercharged version of the Corolla with some better suspension and a LSD would be an amazing. It's already a great car stock, and really good with RSR springs and sticky tires.
Tim Riener I agree with you, Tim! My two gripes were: Audio the worst/infotainment ugly & the sluggish throttle response. On the other hand, the ride and handling were far above the class pretty much Lexus-like! The rest of the interior looks keen. Compared to Civic though, you lose 2-3 inches in rear area. I think if they improved the audio and also engine sound with real exhaust tips and you felt a better tuned power delivery, the Corolla could sell way more hatches
Rotating is a new trend in fwd... If you're from europe, that's nothing new. We had a slew of awesome 80's hot hatches that would lift off oversteer. You just missed out on them
CIvic Si (with a good tune) is a very reliable, high resale 4 door or true 2 door coupe (the only one) that offers quite a bit + sunroof, for $25K, You can easily take about $2000 real price off of that. Yes it is a little slower, in the same way this is slower than the type R. But it has better economy handles possibly as well, safety and other things standard, more available mods than any other compact, great resale, and reliabity, but no hot hatch just sedan and true coupe.
Alex ander Well yes the 16-18 civics (other than the type R) look pretty retarded but they drive well. The SI got extra love and approval from Honda to put into production a helluva lot for the money. It IS the best car on the road for 22-23k if you don't need a hatch. And Acura?? Yes Honda designers for Acura give it better sound systems always and venerable k24 engines. Well Civic LX has 2.0 NA which is not bad, but only in sedans. Honda just has too many conflicting cooks in the kitchen with the Civics and it shows. The styles and features are all over the place. My real admiration is in Type R's and SI coupes.
@Noise Control The new Honda's aren't real hondas is the problem. They have that crappy non Vtec engine with a tiny ass turbo in it. The only car with Vtec in it anymore is the Type R. But you're paying quite a lot for that. And many people are buying and marking up the price of them so they'll pay 32-34,000$ then put them up for 40,000$ They're just NOT worth that much. I would never pay that much of a mark up. The only things I don't like about the Type R is the fake diffusers. And the GIANT ass wing. I like subtle stuff. And things that have a point. I know they planned to keep the rear end of the Type R from swinging out by applying more traction through downforce via the wing. But that thing is TOO big. That and I don't like the look of the exhaust the 3 outlets. Just one nice one or a dual exhaust is fine. But that thing just looks weird. And the fact it makes NO sound. Is a bit unsettling.
Even though the interior is not that good, I am sure the support for this car is gonna be strong with all the goodies to make ur car a bit better or luxurious
Thank god you brought up the blue interior. No other reviewers have and I think it's hideous. Will show dirt and grime over the years. The R-Spec has yellowish interior detailing and a short throw shifter, not sure why they can't put that into the higher priced and performanced N model.
i'm still happy with my turbo 2013 model. the one sports mode is all i need for dazzle-dazzel burning silicon/japanese rubber. they also paid off on the false 24 MPG claim and credited me with $577. if the N model ever comes out with no clutch, i'm in.
Manual is so much more fun bud, and will last longer then a dct. Hyundai has barely any experience with a dct, so I'd be worried about the clutches burning.
I laughed when he said the type r styling is a bit rediculous. I tend to agree lol. Some would say obnoxious lol. Still love the type R (only been in as a passenger)
I don't mind Honda when Honda was Honda. But whatever they did to this Type R it's hideous. It's like someone let one of those hobos off the street holding a "The End is NIGH!" sign hopped up on Acid design that thing. The giant wing. No. Just no. The 3 tipped exhaust... extra no... extra hell no. The only thing they really did right on the Type R was that it was still spiritually a successor of Honda by having a Vtec engine. Anything else with those craptastic non vtec engines with the tiny turbos. Don't even know what that junk is.
I get that the favorable comps to FieST an FoST puts this in good company. Having said that those are real cheap used now. There’s a lot of cars with four seats that aren’t hot hatches, Camaro SS, E46 M3, E9x M3. For $30k and four seats what would you get? I get that comparing new vs used is always a little unfair.
As you mentioned comparing new vs used is tough, to me it always favors used, which is why I basically only buy used cars. Out of all those you listed, I think if you peep my channel you'll see what I'd choose.... :
Yes. It ironically has both some fake engine noise and a real anti-lag system. You can disable the fake sounds through the infotainment system though. I really can't personally tell much of a difference with it enabled/disabled.
Hyundai keeps publicizing that "N" partly stands for Nurburgring, and that it was developed at the Nurburgring, but they won't give it an official Nurburgring time because "that's not the point"????
@@EatSleepDrive For sure, which is why I said "partly". Check out their brand site for the N division: www.hyundai-n.com/en/brand/origin.do "Born in Namyang, Honed at Nürburgring" I swear this point is stressed in some interviews with Biermann. Just seems like a weird dichotomy.
Stands for Namyang. Developed and designed and tested on the Nurburg. Also the symbol for a chicane.... which is what it was designed to attack. Corners....
I've had my eye on these, for the used market when they become less expensive. I predict Hyundai will stop offering the non performance package Veloster N in future years. For now I will continue enjoying my 2014 Focus ST!
Just like there are reviewers which copy SaabKyle04's style to a Tee, I feel this review was pretty much a replica of The Smoking Tire's "One Take." Now I am sure some will say, "Copying, is a form of flattery."
Everything copies from something quite often. Many things are built upon the foundations of those that came before who initially first discovered or created.
My hesitation with this car.... with the GTI you get an exceptionally large performance aftermarket, so it can be exactly what you want it to be. That said, in this moment in time if I had zero intention of ever modifying the car, this Hyundai makes an excellent case for itself and if it were available when I bought my GTI ten years ago I’d probably have purchased the Hyundai.
I love the way these cars look. The pops need an ON OFF switch. I would not want that normally or ever. But the exhaust system sounds good like the Ford Focus ST which sounded good but not as good. As far as the Civic Type R looks. It is the best looking car from Honda for sure and for the money as well. Everything is pretty functional unlike Kia Stinger and Toyota Supra. All those scoops are fake. Nothing is fake in the Civic. The rear wing functions very well: I don't see why the hate. Is it envy? It is semi-wide body at the wheels. The exterior has a lot of awesome features. I only find the 20 inch tires absurdly low profile.
I love the way he gave Kudos to the Fiesta ST, I have a 14 ST With 73,000+ miles on it and it’s running strong, what a fun car to drive and with a few mods make them even more enjoyable.
mike chavez....and Ford North America, in their infinite stupidity, have cancelled the Focus and Fiesta. Check out the all new 2020 ST on sale in Europe......and to cap it off, check out the ST wagon. Only in Europe, what a shame. Lets not forget the all new Fiesta ST......
@@jonathandoe69 : Thanks for the reply. Yes, you make a good point. I live in Canada and the price of gas is much higher here in the USA. It is beyond me why so many people are buying full size pick ups, SUVS, etc. I just do not like the fact that the masses of unsophisticated vehicle buyers impact what I am able to purchase.
FWD cars which rotate isn't anything new. Minis always liked to rotate. My '88 Integra definitely liked to. I gotta say: my son has a current gen Veloster Turbo, and I was pretty impressed by it. If my M2 got totalled tomorrow, I'd at least give the N a test drive.
@Harry Fishnuts for some people, it makes sense to buy a car for transportation usage plus the joy of driving for a reasonable price. I am sorry you do not understand that
Depends how long you intend to keep the car and what you buy a car for. I didn't purchase it for its resale value (which so far is proving to be better than most Hyundai/Kia products). I purchased an N because it was fun, inexpensive, engaging, safe, free of "driver assistance" tech, and warrantied for track usage. The CTR is a legend, a grip monster, and likely a car that will hold a better value than anything else on the road...there's nothing bad I can say about it as it is an amazing vehicle. That said, I liked the N and it was significantly less-expensive. It's an exciting car to drive.
I couldn't deal with my 14 FiST back in 14. The ride just killed me. I loved my 06 GTI 6M though and haven't driven one since that I like as much as I did that one. Too bad it was the rattle and creak master after one month. I love my 2017 Camaro SS 6M, I've had it almost 3 years now which is a record for me. Nice review, I might have to drive one. I think the only car quicker on a track is the Type R, and those are at least $8k more and too Shogun/Pokemon as you illustrated.
I’ve had the car 2 months, the exhaust still hasn’t gotten old lol
Had it since June. It never gets old. Every tunnel, every bit of high wall I drive by, the window goes down and I get the pops going.
All those fake exhaust pops would drive me crazy!

Hahaha! It does it. Rapidly
Nurzrachit well said! And dido. Great buy
Tony Lester ehhhh tony whats up man 😂😂
this car was just named Road & Track's "Performance Car of the Year".
bs. For a few grand more, the type r is a better car in everyway. People just hate the looks so it doesn't get the love it deserves.
ImtheONE Hero try like 10k +
@@anengineerandacat the type R is beautiful in my opinion. Looks much better than any other hot hatch on the market.
This car is priced right and is my choice!
Brand new??
Agree with most of what you said, except this car by far looks best in Black with the Red trim
I was just thinking the same thing the other day as i owned a crx si back in high school. I still have dreams about that car too. I was thinking wrx next, but i wanna drive a veloster n soon to see how fun it really is.
@@johnnydwyer4261 No worries. My old CRX was black.
It’s not racing blue it’s performance blue
Subbing.
Damn Matt Farah lost a lot of weight...
A very good thing they did was switching to a new designer and engineer. Kia/hyundai is doing some amazing things recently
The real GTI adversary is the Hyundai Elantra N (hatch) - they ahould release that in North America
it's the slower but better handling and much cheaper Civis SI 2 door coupe and 4 door sedan, and iof course VW's own Jetta GLI.
I'm assuming you are referring to the i-30N which is only available in Europe atm. The Elantra GT N is the American equivalent of the i-30N for us.
Uh...I own a Veloster N, Elantra N? NOT EVEN CLOSE LOL!
Ian D we should have the 30i, it’s only available in Europe, the Elantra N doesn’t quite beat the GTI.
Ian Mcculloch I have a 2018 Golf 1.8T manual, fun to drive concerned about reliability. If the Veloster N was available when I bought the Golf, I may have settled for the N. I am more confident in Hyundai reliablity vs german cars - though I own a golf and is financed.

It's been a year now, still isn't old
Overall nice video, but you made a huge deal of being a Volkswagenist in the introduction, then barely drew any comparisons to the Golfs at all - I was waiting the whole 16:09 : )

Doesn't seem like he has experience with the mk 7 much so it's not really a comparison.
Waiting for the Veloster N DCT
Good to see you back in CA driving on one of the few good roads we have and yes, for an adult the Civic Type R is too much........what was Honda thinking ? . Good review of what is becoming a super small market segment but one that a few car guys can still get excited about.
I wish I could be out there more! Thanks for the kind words. As you mentioned, it's a small market but important, hopefully people keep buying them so manufactures keep with producing these great cars.

I totally want the Scirocco in the USA, but all we get is boring SUVs.
@@slackerman9758 I drove an 89 GTI in Germany in1993. 120 mph over long periods on the Autobaun is tiring, takes a lot of focus.
Hyundai has come a long way in the past 20 years
Having driven both the diff on the GTI feels more natural.

EatSleepDrive cool, thanks for the reply !

I LOVE this car. I'm old, been driving manuals all my life.....and if I had the money I would buy one of these tomorrow! Meanwhile I'll keep on driving my 2002 Honda Civic SI.
How old is old??
you should try a compare to the 250 hp n model to this optional 275 hp n model that you drive tested here
I'd like to, but for two grand it seems like a no brainier to spring for the performance pack model.
Totally agree.
Higher quality? The n looks so cheap in so many places the st is much nicer imo
@@isabelle.c011 Looks can be deceiving. Give it a year, the paint will be bubbling off the Ford products. I had a 13 Focust ST and a 16 Fiesta ST.
How does it compare to the GTI Mk7 in terms of reliability and insurance cost?
David H'ee reliability is going in favor of Hyundai...VAG cars are fine when new or in warranty.
Arthur Robinson I have the Fiesta ST and love it, I’m glad he gave it Kudos.
Yes Focus ST and it seems this one both target and nailed great sound and since audio doesn't get any love by the manufacturers now, drivers are left with just the engine to listen to now. Make it sing!
You said it. Perfectly said.
I really wanted to own one of these, but I got a really good deal on a fiesta ST. No regrets yet!
Both great cars.
@Bob Hill Not comparing, just a statement. The FiST is not as refined, but it is loads of fun for less than 20K. I have a 2014 Fiesta ST.
@Bob Hill
They are comparable in fun factor, so...its subjective
Just the diff. Just once, just to see how it feels.
Hi everyone ! Do you have some advise to compare this care with the Ford Focus RS ?
Lots of N models coming, including a Sonata N that will be out in the the 3rd quarter of 2020
TidyBananas And that drift van they made 🤤. Car companies need to do more fun stuff like that.

I’m 40 and I love the CTR.

Majority of young people can't. Probably never will. The ones that learn it I respect. Because those are the people who learn how to drive ANYTHING.

Welcome to the party, nice of you to show up.
This guy saying everything right 🤥👏🏻 #claps
Im going to try and get it coming out of 2016 forte koup 1.6 T . Dont forget it has a great warranty
I’m old, 60, but this car has peaked my interest. 😎
You're not old, and certainly not too old to get behind the wheel of one 😎
I don't mean to be a grammar nut. Just an FYI in case you're interested. It's "piqued."
Hey, it’s a great mid-life crisis car and you won’t feel as ridiculous as being seen in the Type-R 😎
I'm 68 and just got my 2021 veloster n with dct a week ago and I'm loving it! You are never too old to enjoy this car. 👍😆
I'm 61. I'm picking mine up Saturday in Florida six-speed manual competition blue Grandpa going to be riding in a cool car
But have you driven the base model ? Want to see a head to head comparison pls
You mention driving it in Normal and N but do not mention custom. Did you know you can customize N mode to reduce the chassis stiffness but maintain the throttle response, improved e-LSD performance, etc? Almost every N owner drives 99% of the time in such N custom with the above settings.
Where was this Drive Filmed? It's a Beautiful Place!
Angeles Forest, CA
That third door just bugs me, why not put another on the drivers side
But...but, that’s the quirky signature of the car.
The practical answer. 90% of the time I just drive by myself or one other passenger. The driver door is much bigger because it's only one door on that side. It makes it easier to get in and out. But yes, quirks
Hempflakes definitely see the practicality of it I’m just ocd and asyemetry bothers be. Lol
All the blue accents the buttons and the belts are because that's Hyundais signature colour buddy look it up
Hyundai made a huge mistake by not bring the i30n as a Elantra N. It could've been a serious GTI competitor. I want the car but not in this form.
Steve H, exactly this.
I mean performance wise this car DOES compete with the GTI quite easily. Just not for the practicality everyone demands. But then most people aren't buying this for a daily family car with a splash of fun.
So how does the performance package give you extra hp everything you listed would not increase hp at all
@@lj555551 Yep np. Mine was a showroom model so I didn't get to have the Performance Pack but they said I can bring it in pay the 2100 + labor and they'll put it in. So anyone who is non Performance pack need not worry you can get it put in. And that came from Hyundai corporate. I called them to ask.
Why not just set the suspension in normal and the rest of the car Sport+
That's pretty much the best spec, except for the steering. Sport+ steering just makes the wheel ridiculously heavy, you don't get anymore feedback. I prefer the steering in a lesser setting.
I know this video is for the N Series but I just wanted to say that I own the 2019 R-Spec and I absolutely LOVE this vehicle and I don't regret buying it. It also seems to be quite eye-catching to the female persuasion. lol
Got the car without perf package solely because I didn't want bigger brakes. Wish the diff was offered separate. Even still, the car as is is fantastic.
You were better off with the performance pack and then replace the front brakes.
I was Sold till you used the word 'Lag'! Does the VW Gti have lag also?
The GTI spools quicker but runs out of steam at the top end.
EatSleepDrive no sir it does not with apr stage 2 when im bus lengths pullin on 40k tuned slow stis 😂😂 #rollinracegangster 🤣
Civic Type R is $7k more for a reason......seam welded unibody, better quality interior, better seats, more power, overall larger car to name a few things.
Ctr is flat out better and worth it
Interior is better.
Not sure if I should trade my Focus ST3 for this...i did drive it, its fun but it seems like a lateral move vs moving up in performance.
As you mentioned it would be more of an incremental step instead of a big jump.
Keep the ST
@@johnm5081 Ok, why?
@@buildmorefarms1007 you have something rare that's going extinct. Hold on to it. A tune, LSD and upgraded brakes will make your ST exceed a veloster n in performance. Exhaust and intercooler upgrade are other considerations for improvement. Can get it all for less than 4k after labor. Even cheaper if you can diy. Fwiw the ST3 interior looks sharp
@@johnm5081 Thank you, I was going to keep it all stock if I decide to keep it so that its value might be higher...pristine stock ST3. Not sure what to do...I saw 2 other Sts today and we waved etc...it is a fun community to belong to.
Cars in this class are soo good nowadays that it's hard to choose in my opinion.....but I am focused on anything from VAG first.

@@jeffk464 It is. It's very refined and nice interior. But very boring.
I love that the french subtitle says Aplaudissement that mean applause when the exhaust pop lol
Thanks for another great review. Can I ask..how did you find your WRX STi? Have you driven a 2019 WRX? How would you compare both?
Im wondering when can we get a DCT in a Veloster N
Rumor is 2021 model year. I'll seriously be considering trading in my 2016 VT when it happens.
I hope they don’t, keeps it exclusive and not to people who think oh just a pretty car
If you want to get rid of that lag, have it reflash/remapped… i guess its not turbo lag, its the delay on your pedal👍👍👍
Dealer didn't have one with performance pack so I got a base...Seems hard to get in usa
They only made like 500 or so for the first model year? Or so I've read. More in the upcoming year(s).
@@2010ngojo yes 400 fir USA market but a base N great fun ans according to Albert more oversteer then the PP... So I am happy
@@eddiegray793
Where's the source for that. Been looking for it. And how many base models did they make?
@@2010ngojo only had one volester to look at
Own one love it. Have owned so many hot hatches and this one is the funnest most adjustable riot you can have for 33k
I've wanted to like this car for years. If it had either 4 doors or 2 doors I think I would.
Depends how you look at it. Just look at it as a 2 door, that happens to have a bonus door..
The exhaust crack would drive me crazy after a while .
Put the exhaust on normal mode and you won't have the pops and cracks
Yeah in the normal mode, it sounds very much like a normal commuter car. Maybe a bit gruntier, but the crackles and pops aren't there. On the highway, I very rarely don't drive in normal mode as the exhaust does wear on you at 110 KM/h
I would love to replace my 07 saab 9.3 with one of these. Great video my dude.
The more players the better.
I love the look of the new corolla hatchback but my biggest gripe is that it looks waaay faster than it actually is.
Si is dope af
If they had put yellow in my Veloster N. would've ripped it out and replaced it IMMEDIATELY. Hideous.
i'm still happy with my turbo 2013 model. the one sports mode is all i need for dazzle-dazzel burning silicon/japanese rubber. they also paid off on the false 24 MPG claim and credited me with $577. if the N model ever comes out with no clutch, i'm in.
Learn to drive a manual dude
Incredible video. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
EatSleepDrive I’ve watched your channel a ton but I’m drawing a blank on your thoughts on these three. You’re gonna make me wat he all you videos huh?
Question is... Is that stock exhaust?
Shockingly yes. I did have it in loud mode the whole video though. It's pretty quiet in normal mode.
@@EatSleepDrive 🤤
that pop and crackle tho..
This makes me wanna sell my BRZ :C
Does it have fake engine sound inside?
I'm told it actually stands for Namyang, which is their testing center.
@@EatSleepDrive For sure, which is why I said "partly". Check out their brand site for the N division: www.hyundai-n.com/en/brand/origin.do

Stands for Namyang. Developed and designed and tested on the Nurburg. Also the symbol for a chicane.... which is what it was designed to attack. Corners....
Where was the location for this test drive so beautiful roads

I'm 51 and am considering getting one myself. Just seems like a fun little car for the price.. Glad the wing isn't huge either. Lol
I think you'll be happy with it!

Great choice! I have a video coming out this week with the new Elantra N as well.
Biermann did a good job with a budget car architecture
FWD cars which rotate isn't anything new. Minis always liked to rotate. My '88 Integra definitely liked to. I gotta say: my son has a current gen Veloster Turbo, and I was pretty impressed by it. If my M2 got totalled tomorrow, I'd at least give the N a test drive.
Honda is 7k more expensive but depreciates way slower than Hyundai Veloster N. So which one do you actually get better bang for your buck?
It would be awesome if you could superimpose your speedo in the corner of the screen whilst driving.
I think Hyundai should have color matched the seat belts, also performance blue is the best color
