Can I just say you guys are amazing, your videos are so detailed and for anyone that fancies giving this a go themselves very informative. I only wish when my father was alive I'd had a chance to do this sort of stuff with him.
Good to see you doing some spannering again. I can't fault your methods. One thing which would've made life a bit easier when unbolting the brakes is to put the steering on full lock. This will give you better access than if the front wheels are in the straight ahead position. Before fitting the brake discs, make sure the mating faces between the disc and hub are absolutely clean. I haven't seen the next vid yet so you may have already have this in hand. The clip for the outer brake pad is a pig of a job to put back on. The brakes look similar to the Astra. There weren't that many Torx fittings on that MINI. They can be an absolute pain to undo. Some copper grease in the right places should prevent the brakes from squealing. The poly bushes are worth the extra money. They're literally fit-and-forget.
Just a tip it makes changing front brakes much easier if you put the steering on lock and take the key out it means you can get to the caliper easier and the steering lock holds it still for you :)
Great video you have as much luck with me with cars. You've definitely gone down the correct route with the poly bushes I was forever changing control arm bushes on my e36: Look forward to the next instalment.
Nice video again. I just hope you don't need the inner sleeves that you knocked out with the chisel - occasionally retrofitting with polybushes requires them to be kept in place.
Right. So I saw this in the suggestion box. I was like youtube done messed up not notifying me of a new savage garage video. But it's an older one. So all good.
did ya go halfords this black Friday, myself I bought the 170 piece for 110 and then found out that 200 piece was on sale the next day for 130 Not amused anyway I'm a fan of rebuilds so will be watching
The suspension work you were doing at about 12 minutes - that's where the ratchet spanners would do the business... what do you think? Great video.... 30 minutes long - you can really tell a lot of effort was put into this. Thanks for uploading.
can do them by just slackening Down the frame bud and ratchet spanners but I do them on a lift probably different story with it being on the ground keep up the Vids dude enjoying watching them
You really were lucky you didn't snap half those bolts right off. I'm surprised you didn't use your impact on that stuff. A quick zap is sometimes the only chance you get with this rusty crap. Polyurethane bushings are probably the way to go with aftermarket. I bet the OEM bushings from BMW are expensive. My rear sway bar bushes for my Toyota were £40 each. On the other hand they should last another 12 years...
This video is the exact reason I hate working on cars. Everything looks ok online but inevitably when you try to do something yourself you end up with a whole handling like you had taking the subframe off lol
Nothing is ever simple when ever I've worked on cars it either sized shears off or you have to remove other bits. I take it to the garage now let them have the hassle plus I don't have a garage big enough to accommodate my car👍
Nightmare job, have done this before with VW bushings. You could have used the old broken puller just got some long threaded bar and bolts. Works a treat. Also avoid using 1/2" to 3/8" adapters to crack big bolts off, unless it's a very good adapter you will snap it. Use 1/2" sockets instead but you may not have had any at the time.
got your 300th like. man I always dread bushing job probably the only thing i leave it to the dealers unless its a simpler car with mounts can be taken out without the whole subframe. press tools are too pricey. but poly bushings are the best job. even there's camber adjusting ones too.
the car that could have sunk BMW, the design team were all sacked 6 months after its launch. . .the endless pit of repairs, ride quality none existent, steering as vague as fog, brakes off a wheel barrow, bushes from a seesaw, the mini was far superior and its 60 years old now, this is the worst car I've owned/drove, had it one week and it had to go, only had 55K miles on it and everything was worn out, it was if it had spent its life off road rallying and never seen tarmac, bodywork was OK but the linkages/drop links, brake callipers etc. had the heaviest rust I've seen on a car. floor pans OK, people buy this car purely on looks and nothing else, even the interior looks like Walt Disney designed it for a Jedi star fighter,

If you need any advice as I've been working on my r53 works for a while now
👍R53 JCW is my favorite R53🤓
Just a tip it makes changing front brakes much easier if you put the steering on lock and take the key out it means you can get to the caliper easier and the steering lock holds it still for you :)
like how you not using air tools and doing it the old school way
i know I'm a year late but we'll explained 👍 cordless rachet would be handy for some of them bolts. Great job guys
Also do you put copper grease back on bolts as standard with cars or only if the bolts have been difficult to undo?
Great video you have as much luck with me with cars.

I think it's easier to pull the subframe with the steering rack and pump attached.

easiest way to remove ball joint is burn it off with fire, yes im serious there are many videos where ball joints just get burned
it would have been easier to buy the suspension arm bushes in the brackets already quick change less mucking about about £28 plus VAT each 👌
