    Thanks for the great video. I had to replace 2 wheel hub bearings, left front and left rear ( wife hit a pot hole), so I did the brakes while the Mini was off the ground. Your tips sped the process up. I used the recommended rotors, they work great. I finally broke down down and bought the rear caliper tool.........

    This has made me decide I don't have to correct tools and wish you could do it for me. I bet even a garage don't carry out all the steps you did. I bet you never have any come backs to your work and it is rare to see someone work with such good standards. Thanks for making the video it has at least saved me damaging my car by leaving to an expert!

    One of the better videos I've seen, both information and production value. Thanks! Especially appreciated seeing the challenge of removing the rotor retention screw, which was my biggest frustration. To address one question, yes, a screwdriver-type impact driver will work although an air impact tool is better. The one thing not addressed was resetting the warning indicator on the dash if the wear sensor has triggered. But that's covered in other online postings.

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  9 років тому

      Chip Bearden Glad the video was helpful. The wear sensor indicator will reset itself after a couple of key cycles (turning the car off and on a few times)

    Great video. Complete information including mentioning the springs on the inner rear pads which fix the pads to the piston. On my Mini the garage mechanic didn't do this, and the right inner pad moved outwards about 5mm what caused the brake heating up and a squeaking noise. When I made a complaint they just changed the bushing bolts which was no improvement. I discovered the mess when i had a look at the brakes after watching your video. Thanks for this useful manual.

    Excellent video - showed me everything I needed to do the brakes, saved me a ton of money. We have a 2006 mini cooper convertible (not an S), and the only thing that was different was the dust boots on the calipers - we didn't need to remove those - they are open on the end. Thanks for making the video!

    Love your videos. I have a 2003 MINI Cooper (non-S) that I bought last summer. It has, unfortunately, been a series of almost constant problems, but I've been able to do most of the repairs myself, largely because I've found How-To's of yours. I just did the brakes, front and back, this weekend and followed this video almost to the T. Worked great. I had seized set screws on all four rotors. I've never had nuts/bolts that I haven't been able to unseize using heat and an emergency candle, but didn't work on these, so I did finally have to break down and buy a pneumatic impact. But with that they all four popped right off. Only other "problem" I had was that the pads I got for the rear didn't have the notch in them for the pad wear sensor, so I had to take them back and get a different set from another supplier. But otherwise it was smooth sailing.
    Thanks a ton for your videos!

    excellent video, thanks Mod, hey wanted to let everyone know, I had alot of trouble getting the caliper tool to "start" turning the caliper, so much so that I was about to give up, then realized the adapter that fits the minis caliper can be used on a socket adapter then placed in my impact drill(20v DeWalt) that actually worked much better and faster than the caliper tool, just wanted to throw that out there for anyone else having trouble.

  • @phillyhouse

    This video is awesome. Beware - we ordered the parts for the front and rear brakes per the links above. The rear set is fine, but the front set came with the wrong rotors - there were the correct size and width, but the fifth hole for the retainer nut is on the opposite side of the bolt hop from where it should be. The rotors therefore cannot be secured to the hub. This is NOT the fault of ModMINI, but the Amazon supplier. Trying to decide if I want to get correct rotors or just use a threaded rod to hand the rotor on until I get the wheel lugs started... Thanks ModMINI for a great video!

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI  9 років тому

      +phillyhouse You don't really need the bolt to hold the rotor to the hub. The lug bolts and wheel will hold it just fine. (My track brakes have no hole at all and I drive them around at 130mph with no issues)

    Just in case you run into this same issue. My local auto shops caliper kit wasn’t small enough. I took some needle nose pliers and was able to rotate the caliper. I then, very gently, put a c clamp on the bare caliper and was able to spin it in with just the clamp. I tried it with the pad on and I got bound up every time but the clamp itself worked great. Next time I won’t even bother renting the caliper kit.

    I was able to do this job but only after very much of trouble compressing the piston with the caliber tool.
    Piston was so stuck that first the tool handle bent to a pretzel and then finally the shaft snapped.
    Luckily the kit had that one adapter which takes 1/4 drive so I was able to use my air impact wrench to get the piston moving.
    After the few first rotations, just like you said, it got much easier to rotate.
    So the caliber tool quality was bit of a disappointment but luckily it lasted long enough to get the job done.

    Hi Mod,
    I'd like to add that the rear pistons can be screwed in using some penetrating oil, a pair of needle-nose pliers, and a bit of grunting. Like you said, the first few turns are the hardest.

  • @tboy2466
    @tboy2466 9 років тому +12

    Might be worth noting the set screw that holds the rotor on slightly protrudes out the back and can be scrubbed with a small wire brush and sprayed with a penetrating lubricant

    Good Christ! I didn’t know you needed a specialty tool to compress it, was cranking on it like crazy with big C clamp and wrapped the handle around the threaded rod. Rented the kit, but None of the pieces would seat. I enlarged the holes on the cylinder with a drill so it would fit the closest one .

    Mod MINI - Thank you for the incredibly helpful videos. I have a question? My R53 has locked up brake/rotor on the right rear. I'm figuring it would either be a seized/rusted e-brake cable, or a failed caliper. I thought I could easily check for a seized cable by detaching it at the caliper. I spent over an hour trying to create sufficient slack on the cable by pulling with vice grips. Attempting to rotate the assembly where it attaches to the caliper would not move any further. Do you have any recommendations on how might detach the e-brake cable? I greatly appreciate any advice. : )

The outer pad on both sides is loose in the caliper housing....and they rattle! They work fine but clatter about and vibrate. Thought outer pads might come with shims, but no. I'm replacing them with top line products. Any thoughts from you? Cheers

    Your link for the tool now takes a customer to a tool package where the application guide doesn't list Minis. Since they can't list all cars, do you know if it fits 2005 Mini Cooper R50?

    Mod MINI Hi there! Let me start by saying what a fantastic, educational video this is!.. I am attempting my first rear disc change on my Mini Cooper R50! I've been reading a lot into the procedure and intend to follow your every step, I just have 2 questions! Is there only one rear break pad sensor for the back wheels?
    Also when the brake pads and discs are changed on the rear, will the handbrake need to be adjusted or left the same? Also does the handbrake cable get touched whilst changing the pads and disc?
    Your response is highly appreciated!
    Best Wishes.
    K

    So I've been looking for a few days and everyone I've watched has been super unhelpful. I am trying to fix my break booster the line snapped off the plastic piece that chills next to the brake fluid reservoir. IDK how to explain it very well but the hard plastic tube broke off the end of the grey piece that's inside the brake booster. Any advice on how to remove said line

    Hi this question goes out to Mod Mini and all other MIni guys on here.
    Got meself a 2005 MINI JCW, needs some TLC> I am looking to replace the brakes (rotors and pads), could somebody tell me if the rotors for the 2005 JCW is the same for the 2005 mini S? There is a lot of confusing information on many forums.
    Thanks in advance..

    Great video Mod, looking forward to replacing my pads on all 4 corners this weekend. I also purchased braided stainless lines to install during the same procedure, anything to make note of? Many thanks!

      +jedcsh1 Make sure to make it tight enough but not too tight, and be sure to bleed the system?

      I am trying to learn about these types things. I am hoping to purchase a Mini next spring. You make it look so easy :)
