- Warning light usually mean something.. In this case the BMW was warning us that the brakes were low on the front.. So we fixed that! Enjoy.

when winding calipers back, you should have took the cap off the brake fluid reservoir or you'll pop a seal in the servo, i learnt that the hard way
Yep, exactly this. And also rather than faffing around trying to push the piston back in with a clamp. Before you even start the job, just use 2 large flat blade screwdrivers. One on the top of the outer pad, and one on the bottom of the outer pad. And just pull the caliper body towards you by levering the screwdrivers. This forces the piston in. So easy to do, and no messing with clamps.
You don't... no need proper way is it crack bleed nipple off and clap the flexi, so no fluid at all go back up the system
I always crack the bleed screw so you don't risk flipping the seal. Makes it a shed load easier aswell as theres no only the friction resistance between the seal and the piston to work against.

@@mattblackledge9068 Exactly - people see low fluid so they top it up not realising the the fluid has just compensated for brake pad wear.
I have been thinking of changing my EP2 brakes for a EP3 set, which I have found to be a direct swap. This has given me a good idea what I need to do, minus the brake lines, and has helped because I couldn't find a good, clear tutorial. I have only changed the o2 sensor on my car before so I am a complete novice! Thanks.
You may think it’s repetitive but actually it’s a pleasure to watch you work. I wish all professional garages took as much care as you do when you are working. A lot of mechanics wouldn’t of taken the trouble to tap out the whole for that screw, they would of just binned the screw.
Good job apart from not putting new silicone grease on the sliders.
I also clean the mini gaitors & the piston rubber seal when its fully out with armorall.
James, I think you have twisted the brake hose!! It is clear to see on 20:48 and it is super important you untwist it. You did it when you removed the caliper from it hanging on the strut. Apologies if I am wrong but I am 99% sure you have - easy mistake but a dangerous one.
Pagid is a decent brand of disc and pads, There is plenty of life in them disc and pads. You should've just completed the circuit by soldering the wear sensor wires.

Well worth posting mate - brake pads/disks are often the first diy job people undertake on their car so you just helped a bunch of diy-ers get started - nice one!

Always get a Haynes manual if you can. I was told up to 2014 its the book,newer its a disc!
And remember,nothing worse than having to go to get extra parts,or tools,midway through a job.
Everyone does their brakes differently. The way I did mine's are: 1. After I clean the caliper brackets from rust, put some anti-seize between the bracket and the spring clips to stop rust build up. When it becomes rusty, it squeezes the pads makes the pads sliding more difficult. 2. Although yes, Brembo pads does have brake shims at the back of the pad, but it still squeaks (happens to me). Same thing happened to Pagid (my uncle). So a bit of lubrication does help. In fact, I've taken my brakes apart, lub the shims for that very reason.

Brake videos aren't the most exciting but I'll enjoy watching them and I'd rather have them to watch than no video. As well as that you never know what extra tid bit of information you're going to garner from them.

I think the occasional brake video never hurts anyone. May not be that exciting for your regular viewers, however I I think its a good way to draw newer ones in that are interested in seeing how to do a job on their specific car, in this case the BMW. The job needed doing regardless,may aswell use it for material on your channel, no-one is forcing anyone to watch it if they don't want to. Nice work as always! 👍

Pagid are high quality oe. Eisher are also very good value, also you can bridge those sensors to switch off the warning light

It's not repetitive in my eyes. Watching you do different makes/manufacturers gives me the confidence I might be able to do it next time on one I've never seen you do before, to copy. And you give little tips (like no grease on the back as it has a plate) I assumed you just put that on as good practice, regardless. My next set will be Brembo's so its unlikely I'll need to buy grease (as I don't have any yet) so that saved me some money and i can at least delay that expense. it's those little differences between videos that come out that you probably don't even realise when you film and talk us through what you are doing and most notably you clearly explain WHY! And going the extra mile on the threads etc. relates to any bolt not just those on brakes.

Piston rewind tool is like 10£ but, g clamps are 5£ and you can do the job just fine.

Like the video. Just a one thing the reason you only get 2 bolts is you don't need to take the top caliper bolt off
Tapping a thread is so satisfying
In most modern BMWs you can find out whats wrong with the trip button, if you turn the ignition on and hold the button until the service menu comes up, you can reset them there too without a diag tool 👍

I also fitted all new Brembo discs and pads all round on my car a few months back. I got them from "Demon Tweaks". They were cheaper than Eurocarparts. Even with their silly weekly discount codes.

Always worth it i'd say, I've just finished my Volvo which is new to me. Rear pads and discs, the retaining spring was seized on both sides so ended up replacing the rear callipers. The when I came to bleed the system a front bleed nipple snapped, so I replaced both front callipers. what a job!

@@benholroyd5221 argue against it? what i mean is, is that every brake job has the possibility to throw a spanner at you. For someone like this channel it makes great content and had he of come across other issues it also would have made a great video. And therefore it is always worth recording the jobs for his channel.
@@isctony for content, yes. replacing all 4 brake assemblies is "always worth it". I bet you werent muttering that at the time though!
I'm going to call that brake disc securing bolt an essential item. Otherwise you have to ensure the disc, hub and wheel are aligned when it comes to putting in the first bolt. Makes me glad I have studs on my car instead.

Those pads got a lot of meat on them indeed. Last year I replaced the breaks on my Corsa, those were used until they literally broke in half landing on the ground. No meat at all, just pure metal. Luckily it was on the way to the shop. 😅

The wear sensor is supposed to touch the disc at the end of the pad life. There's a thin wire carrying electricity that breaks as it contacts the disc.

Those pads look fine to me my thought is that they did it as a fail safe knowing that people don't usually fix them as soon the light comes on the bus I went to school in had that light on for ages before they started scraping
My method for a wheel stuck on the rim is to undo all the bolts except one that you leave partially threaded. Then from the other side of the wheel. Kick the wheel and tyre with your foot (whilst you are lying down).. The wheel will break free and the one partially threaded bolt will stop the alloy falling off and getting damaged...
Those pads and discs were well 'glazed'.. Even though there was thickness left it was best practice to change them in this condition.
Other good practice is to remove wheels once a year and clean up rust and muck and then regrease and refit wheels.. This gives you a chance to clean, inspect inner side of alloy and tyre..

You could film yourself tightening a wheel nut and i would still watch it. So yes i like to see the brake videos, 😆 good content as you always explain everything in great details 👍
From someone who works in kwikfit, BMW wheels (and any wheel for that matter) come off with the least work when you leave a bolt in a few threads and smack the back of the wheel from under the car with a 5lb rubber mallet, lots of time saved and agony prevented
I mean working on BMWs is tricky enough without having to do it one handed and filming 😂. I've learned along the years that some bolt, bracket or fastener will always break or be knackered. BMW make their parts out of cheese. Loving your vids at the moment mate, all the best 👍

Have you tried using ceratec grease instead of copper? Tubes are only cheap.
What about changing the setting on the IDrive? This wasn't covered in the video.

Carry on with the brake videos please, one problem I just ran into on my 2009 Kia Optima LX is that the brake caliper brackets warped .5 to 1 cm in from the wear and heat and now the brake pads pinch if you go to put them in with both the new brake hardware.
Always found brembo good or EBC brakes looks a nice car the one series I'm on the look out for a daily now the MGB has gone away for the winter
I always scub the calipers up and give them a coat of matt black just looks alot better and keeps them cleaner for longer
Great vid, just be careful you don’t overtighten any bolts initially with a breaker bar etc ... or your torque wrench will lie to you !

good to see the brakes being changed however..... DONT use Copperslip or any other kind of grease anywhere near the pads. They get hot, grease melts and where do you think it can end up?
Thats right!... On the disc, not a very desireable place for it so just don't use it, especially as it doesn't need it there!
hey bud if you put grease under the hardware it will stop/slow rusting unfder the clips preventing rust jacking and siezing of the pads...
good decision to go with brembos, i bought eicher from euro and they were horrible and squeaked like crazy. Ended up getting pagid which have been fine.

The pad wear sensors are held by the caliper assembly. You were hurting my head by not immediately hanging the caliper - lol ;)
